Week 4 Prediction Games: Perfect Prediction Inferno

It has already been a good weekend for 49ers fans. The prediction contest results are here to bring more good news. We may have set a record for perfect predictions in a weekend with a total of ... wait for it ... 9 perfect predictions. Might of had nine perfect predictions total all last season. With this kind of prediction point inflation someone is going to accuse me treason during next Republican Presidential debate. I'd normally use this reference to stump for my preferred Republican presidential candidate but mcwagner is itching to toss me a third warning for the month. But for the record the checks from 49erLou don't start rolling in til Week 13, that still leaves twelve weeks of honest competition.

Still its like 2005 all over again with the bullish point market giving everyone a bump, except of course urnext (everyone nods their head in community agreement). Maybe our Bruin mathematical prodigy is onto something. Or maybe bakoninerfan is running a ponzi scheme, LASVEGASNINER is a risk drunk hedge fund manager who so far has gotten lucky and Ninerfromacrossthepond is actually short selling others picks (watch out SanFranciscoKnights). Lets count the profits.

Scoring Explained

Your prediction has these same three components as the actual game score.

1) If you predict the correct winner for an individual game, we will score your prediction against the actual game. If you predict the incorrect winner for an individual game, your prediction will not be scored.

2) Ideally, you will predict the exact point differential of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 45. If you predict a score with a PD of 45, the difference between your predicted PD and the actual PD is 0 (45 - 45 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.

3) Ideally, you will predict the exact point total of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 65. If you predict a score with a PT of 65, the difference between your predicted PT and the actual PT is 0 (65 - 65 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.

So, assuming that you predict the correct winner of the individual game, we simply add the difference between your predicted and the actual PD to the difference between your predicted and the actual PT. The closer this total is to zero, the better your prediction is. A zero exactly will always be a perfect prediction.
pPD = Predicted Point Differential
aPD = Actual Point Differential
pPT = Predicted Point Total
aPT = Actual Point Total
x = Subscore

|pPD - aPD| + |pPT - aPT| = x

That total becomes your subscore for each individual game. These subscores are then ranked, and the five best (including ALL ties) are awarded points. Perfect predictions are awarded 10 points. If the highest subscore for a particular game is not a perfect prediction, it is awarded 5 points. Points then follow in descending order, so that all of the second best predictions get 4 points, the third best all get 3 points, and so on.

I think...

“s/p” stands for “sub-score/points” where sub-score is found by the following equation:

(pPD – aPD) + (pPT – aPT) = sub-score

In this case, for you, we get the following:

(7 – 7) + (41 – 41) = 0

Your sub-score is 0 because you accurately predicted both the point difference and the point total in the Tampa/Indy game. Because you also chose the Bucs to win, you are rewarded 10 points for getting a sub-score of 0. Hence “10” is your “p”.

All perfect predictions for any game are recorded as 0/10 in the table. Sorry if this is not what you were asking.

You only need 2-3 good weeks to score enough points to make the playoffs so you have plenty of time to catch up.

Fooch puts up a fan post during the middle of week. He’ll list 6 games than you simply post your predictions for those games in the comment section. First, thanks for the work you put in to tally scores, Bignerd. This game is fun, if frustrating. It seems I usually pick the games right, but my scores are always off. Finally, thanks for restraining your ire. I hope everyone doesn’t feel I am as annoying as you apparently do. I usually back up most of my criticism of Alex Smith. Which I guess could be annoying to many in the blogosphere, as my posts tend to be long. What can I say, I talk to much. But I feel that is much better than the blind hate or adulation many show. Anyway, before I get annoying again…

but my hands hurt, you got blood on my new shoes, soiled yourself in my trunk, I had to drive all the way to the ditch and back. Are you going to pay for the gas? Then I have to clean my shoes and trunk, then explain to the officers where I was. Then I have legal fees and all that time in court and pay off the judge. Again, you are making things hard on me. I don’t know how Fooch does it every weekend.
