49ers-Bucs Injury Report: Isaac Sopoaga, Shawntae Spencer Sit Out Practice
The San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers each released their first practice participation report of the week. There aren't many big names hurting, although a few worth mentioning. For the Bucs, they are dealing primarily with depth injuries while the 49ers are hopefully simply getting over some nagging injuries.
The 49ers officially added Tramaine Brock to the OUT status alongside Braylon Edwards and Moran Norris. Edwards is expected back after the bye and it looks like Norris will probably be healthy again at that point. It remains to be seen what impact that would have on the depth chart, but the team has three weeks to figure out how best to work them back into the lineup.
Brock is not the only member of the secondary that is banged up. Cornerback Shawntae Spencer did not practice today with a toe injury. We'll keep an eye on his injury as the week progresses. I'd imagine if he had any shot at supplanting Tarell Brown in the starting lineup, this would slow it down.
The other injury of note is Isaac Sopoaga did not practice due to an infection. No word on the severity of it.
UPDATE: Barrows tweeted that he is hearing Sopoaga might have a staph infection. If he can't go Sunday, Ricky Jean Francois would start and Ian Williams would likely be active as his backup.

For crying out loud coach...you gotta be smart with Sopoaga
Why in the world are you RISKING an injury to your only stud Nose Tackle simply because you want him to get more snaps at fullback.
If Sopoaga gets hurt in a blocking pile up…. you are going to reget it.
If you want to get cute and use a BIG Body fullback near the goal line….use one of your BIG body back ups….. maybe Alex Boone or Chilo Rachal…. But Not Sopoaga!
?
He has a staph infection.

He has the same exact chance to have an injury on defense.
So I don’t really get your logic.

so you think the extra snaps at full back do not increase
his injury risk? Simply taking snaps at fullback adds to the chances of an injury, where as zero snaps at fullback decrease injury risk…less snaps less risk, right?
And I am only talking about taking snaps at full back.
Full backs are more susceptible to staph infections?

Fullbacks have no soul.
It is in the job description. Why do you think they have drafted a ginger kid.
I believe Soap played full back because
of his rugby background and because he’s done it some before
Staph infection can lead to weight loss and I think may be contagious too.
Lets wish Sopoaga well and a fast recovery!
Prob how he got it...

does anyone know...
whether the eagles have the synthetic field turf? I have heard that these types on playing surfaces increase the risk of staph infections
will second that
I got a pretty nasty staph infection over mardi gras last year and it completely ate into my calf. If staph is caught early though and treated it really isn’t too big of a deal for a healthy adult. I waited till my leg turned black to go to the doctor and I was walking fine the next week. I was told that if I had gone in a couple days earlier I would have been able to get the infection drained and fine within a few days.
Just speculation but I am sure that soap is pretty heavily monitered and any incidence of staph would have been quickly caught, the only reason I see him being held out this week is due to the fact that staph is contagious, though on the same note I do remember hearing that something like 80% of people have some form of staph living on their skin so the contagiousness (sp?) of it might be overblown.

I don't think that he's been declared out of the game yet, was just held out of practice...
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
thats a relief
and I’m thinking that if he has an open would they’ll have some way of sealing it and decontaminating it.
Does anyone know the NFL’s policy in regards to blood and cuts?
I blame dirty Eagles

Okay people.
I know what staph is. And I know about Morgan. No need to educate me.
But the way you worded this it sounded like your complaining about him playing at fullback and that he has staph because of it.

Their LB's are overrated.
They actually are very similar to the Eagles defensively.

L.B. Mason Foster and D.L. Adrian Clayborn are not overrated...
They are both studs.
Don't see it...
Way too inconsistent in my opinion. Especially Clayborn… that’s how he was in college too. Takes plays off and all that; a lot of them. Foster is smaller and has trouble getting off blocks from what little I have seen thus far.

I agree on foster.
Clayborn is the exact opposite of what you said though. Throughout college and now in the pros he’s drawn praise from coaches and opposing players for bringing it every play. He does have a history of wearing down late in games though.

Some stats on the 49ers defensive front 7
Justin Smith – 2 sacks & 2 Force Fumbles
Ray Mc Donald – 3 sacks
Paryls Harralson – 2 sacks & 2 Force Fumbles
Aldon Smith – 2 sacks
Ahmad Brooks – 1 sack
Navorro Bowman – no sacks
Patrick Willis – no sacks & 1 Force Fumble
Seems pretty even to me.
Play to Win!
Justin Smith is my new hero.
How about the Bengals?
Michael Johnson – 2 Sacks – 1FF
Jonathan Fanene – 2 Sacks
Geno Atkins – 2 Sacks
Dan Skuta – 1 Sack 1 FF
Domata Peko – no sacks 1 FF
Rey Maualuga – no sacks 1 FF
Manny Lawson – nothing
If Lawson didn’t suck they’d have a couple more.
Play to Win!
Justin Smith is my new hero.
Cowboys?
Jason Hatcher 2 Sacks
Jay Ratliff nothing
Kenyon Coleman nothing
DeMarcus Ware 5 sacks
Sean Lee nothing
Bradie James nothing
Anthony Spencer 3 Sacks 2 FF
Here’s a team that relies on their outside linebackers for all their sacks. It seems to work though.
Play to Win!
Justin Smith is my new hero.
Never like to see someone go down to injury or staph infection in this case, but I think RJF is a better and more disruptive player than Ice, just like McDonald was a better and more disruptive player when he backed up for all those years.
RJF isn't better than Sop yet, but he is making nice progress.
I'm not feeling witty enough right now
Secondary is running thin...
Freeman coulld light us up for 350+… Fangio better bring the casino blitzes allllll daaayyy loooonnnggg

we might get to him a bunch
he is actually a good runner, but he stands in the pocket a bit too long sometimes.
Come on, Alex, please be good this year..

Hopefully Spencer improves, but I wouldn't worry about Freeman going off like that
He’s never had a 350+ passing day in his career. In fact, he’s only hit 300 once in his career and that was back in his rookie year. Freeman’s a good QB but even without Brock and Spencer I’m not too worried about him going off like that.
This isn't great news
I like RJF, but he isn’t Soap and I’m not sure how he’ll do with a bigger role. Maybe Ian Williams gets some snaps too, he was fairly quiet in preseason from what I remember.
Certainly a tougher task stopping Blount now, Soap has done his job replacing Franklin and adsorbing blocks.
Adsorb?
Wow, completely different meaning…smh
lol I didn't even catch that
I agree with you though. You know I didn’t even notice Soap out there much last week, I was starting to wonder if he even played at somet points. Then I remembered him going in at FB a few times. I noticed a lot of RJF and even McDonald at times in the middle.
I'm not feeling witty enough right now
Buc's don't have that many offensive weapons
I’m more worried about the possibility of alex getting sacked a few times in the first couple of series and the offense being out of sync for the rest of the game
...and then Singletary opened His Book and it said "thou shalt NOT pass"
Made some great adjustments at half last week on the Oline which is definitely a huge plus that we can do that.
Jenkins for the Eagles was on FX and was saying on the field that “they are doing something different up front now”… which translates to me, to they were making some big corrections.

yeah i heard that too
its great to see other teams get flustered due to our team’s adjustments haha
Mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, outside of soccer.
Really?
Well that would surely be a change to the past with teams calling out our plays. Been waiting for years now to see proper half time adjustments during a game, Sunday was definitely refreshing in that regard.
I'm not feeling witty enough right now
Who is Preston Parker and why should I care?
He’s the guy who’s going to be open. I think the Bucs have alot of good weapons. Blount for one. Freeman can throw and run. Mike Williams was the most productive rookie WR last year. Kellen Winslow is a decent TE. Josh Freeman has only been sacked 6 times so the line is doing something right.
I disagree that the Buc’s don’t have weapons.
Play to Win!
Justin Smith is my new hero.
Maybe we'll get too see
a Peanut Butter Jelly dance if RJF gets a sack!!!! Havent had a good sack dance since Takeo’s tae kwon doe dance….

Wow I see why coach is always on the hunt
For other talent.. It’s not too scary yet but we could get a little too thin in some key positions.. How long is Frank and Crabtree going to be limited in practices for.. It’s fine for a little while and shoot em up with pain pills on Sundays but with Braylon out and uncertainty there when he returns.. We can’t be playing teams and having morgan lining up with no. 1 corners all the time.. I’m not even sure if Dixon could even fulfill franks position to the extent of how we rely on him.. And our secondary is really questionable right now.. I know harbaugh is lookin at running backs.. It wouldn’t hurt to be eyeing some corners and wide receivers.. Before I get yelled at.. Lol.. I am very curious about the Terrell Owens situation.. He wants to play and is hurtin for money.. We could get him cheap and he would present a huge threat.. If Braylon and Crabtree are on the bench list.. It’s something to think about if we are serious about airing it out in the post season with teams like green bay..
