Utilizing Braylon Edwards: Let's Get Physical?
Consider this the week for some cheesy headlines. On Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, Braylon Edwards had four receptions for 42 yards, and more importantly he made it through the game unscathed. He was targeted on seven passes and was in the game a lot more than the ten to fifteen snaps I was thinking he might see. That would seem to bode well for his use moving forward.
We'll have a bit more on Edwards fellow starting wide receiver Michael Crabtree later today. In the meantime, I was curious about how the team would look to use Edwards moving forward. He seemed to have the most success on short little slant patterns where he could use his size to basically shield away the cornerback covering him. It would seem to behoove the team to use him more in such a role. I'm sure there are reasons the team did not go to that well any more frequently. I don't know if it was concern about the defense adjusting, or what exactly, but they chose not to further use a play that was having a lot of success.
The 49ers travel to face the Washington Redskins this Sunday and Edwards will likely be covered by either Josh Wilson or DeAngelo Hall. Edwards has a solid four to five inches and twenty pounds on them. Hall and Wilson have veteran experience, but it remains to be seen if either can match the physical nature of Edwards. I suppose it is impossible to make many predictions about the 49ers offensive game plan aside from Frank Gore, but consider me hopeful we see Edwards using that size advantage as frequently as possible.

Good morning Fooch and all!
I certainly agree that we are holding back many plays and trying not to go to the well too often! I’ve suggested that we have installed more during improvement week a few times now in different posts/threads and that showed up with the passes to Joe and Ice! Also, a must read link from ninjames is the Maiocco post about how many different groups lined up against the Browns! My head was adding them all up and thanks to Matt for that break down! Perhaps this is one reason, not a bad one IMO, why the offense looked a bit sluggish in the second half?
Enough said above! I can't believe the "t-raiders" are going to play in OUR stadium! Bastards!

Nice usage of behoove!
I can see Alex throwing a jump ball or two to Braylon when he’s got 1-on-1 coverage vs. Hall or Wilson. Alex has had significant success in those sorts of situations, and we saw against Cleveland that the Niners want to get some chunk plays through the air in addition to the drive-sustaining short passes that characterize the West Coast Offense.
Braylon is actually a great fit for the WCO because of his size and willingness to go over the middle. I feel like the team is barely scratching the surface of its passing potential. Not that I would want to expose Alex a ton more than he already has been exposed. I’d rather have an low-volume, efficient passing game and a winning team than a risk-taking, throw-it-all-over-the-yard offense on a team that doesn’t win.
So far, 2011 has been Harbaugh-some!

Ur right, we are just scratching the potential of what we can do.
I feel like every play is a set up for a new play down the line. We are running at will which is setting up the pass and now that Alex has a moment in the pocket he can make good decisive throws. Can’t wait till he hits everyone vd, dw, crabs, Edwards, hunter, gore, kw, and sure why not hit staley n soap again. I luv me some niners.

This last game plan was similar to the ones we saw against Seattle and Cincinnati
It seems like Harbaugh is intentionally saving the passing game for opponents that will require a different approach. Time and time again, the players have commented about this coaching staff approaching game planning in a different way than we are used to. They install a different plan each week. Gasp! I know. Alien indeed.
The slant to Edwards looked like it will be available all season long, almost whenever we need it. Alex has been accurate on that throw, particularly when he is targeting Edwards. In the past, we’ve seen some terrible throws on the same route when he was trying to hit Crabs. The tight ends were almost non existent on Sunday in the passing game as well.
Delanie Walker was without a single reception, unless my mind betrays me, and Vernon only caught three balls. The creative passes to the big men, Staley and then Sopoaga, will give opponents enough to think about from the tape of this game. The amount of variety that the 49ers can throw at the opposition from their “big” package is impressive.
I think that Harbaugh may be continuing to keep his cards close to the vest when it comes to how much he shows on tape against lesser opponents. The more they think we aren’t a dangerous passing team the more we can bust out with big plays when we actually need them in a game.
Alex leads the league with three come from behind victories, so I think it’s safe to say that he can get the job done when it is necessary. Edwards will be a key factor, now that he is healthy, in moving the chains when we are in need of points.
Long live the Harbaugh revolution!
Come on, Alex, please be good this year..

I am pretty sure Walker
didn’t even get any targets. He was totally invisible, although I am sure I saw him blocking a bunch.

Right
and he can be one of our main targets when we need him.

maybe..and I am just in a dark tunnel by saying this...
maybe Coach doesnt want to overutilize the TEs until the playoffs….its my understanding that he is a run and heavy usage of the TE kind of guy…
YEA!
The coaching staffs different approach to each game has our opponents guessing. I Think is genius to save all the big plays and not really open that playbook at full throttle until we reach the playoffs and hey even the superbowl the way this team is playing! GO NINERS!!!
He's also a good run blocker

i think our coaching veered away from Braylon
so Washington wouldn’t have much of it on film; we might go back to that when we play them…in fact, if i were a betting man, I’d all but guarantee it
