Aldon Smith and the Rookie Sack Record
Here we are almost half way through with the season and Aldon Smith could easily take the NFL Rookie Sack Record. I say this because 4 of the next 7 teams we face have already given up 20+ sacks a piece.
In the last four games Smith, has racked up 6.5 sacks and is on pace to crush Jevon Kearse, Tennessee, 1999 record of 14.5 sacks in his rookie season. Okay, crush is a strong word but if Aldon, just records 1 sack in each of the remaining 9 games, he will end the season with 15.5 sacks and take the record.
I am very excited about this kid and this could be the start of a very storied career with our beloved 49ers.

Depends when/if he hits 10 sacks

When Jim Harbaugh says "more is more" I think he is trying to say Moore is more.
so next week then?
maybe he’ll rack up 9 on his own against the redskins
if he hits 10 sacks this week
We can talk when he gets 11.

really?
if he has a 3.5 sack game you won’t be ready to say he can get 4.5 or more over then following 8 games?
injuries
don’t want to jinx him

Supposedly the Niners have a weak offense. They are only ranked 6th in PPG.
Crabtree runs a 4.52

if he keeps getting sacks
Aldon Smith may get record..WOW!!
HOPE SO
It will all be based on the rest of the team. How the DBs maintain coverage. How the D-Line continues to create the push in the trenches, and if Ray McDonald’s hamstring injury is minor/major. Mcdonald has been a bulldozer on the front 3. he creates a great deal of push on the line. I would like to see if DeMarcus Dobbs will get any time too. He was a beast all pre-season long. He is also about 26 years old.(Mature body type)
Another thing I love about this is that Smith didn't even get to play much the first 3 games.
He’s really just started contributing, and boy has he contributed.
Aldon is on pace for 21 sacks!
If you look at it that way (and I don’t think you should)
6.5 sacks in 4 games = 1.625 sacks per game x 13 games = 21.125 total sacks.
Unlikely that he’ll keep on that pace. If nothing else, DCs will start planning for him better.
It's important to note that Aldon is playing alongside
J.Smith, R. McDonald who has been a STUD, P. Willis and N. Bowman
He’s playing damn well but those guys are helping him immensely.
Gimme 1 round!
like they helped manny lawson?
same personnel as last year. Aldon’s sack on Mccoy is something that none of our OLBs last year or this year could do, he covered so much ground in less than 3 seconds.
Well Manny Lawson sucks before you use him as comparison
Dude has 14 tackles in 7 games this season. Taylor Mays isn’t even starting for them and he has 2 tackles in 2 games.
I’m saying temper the talk around here. People are talking about the dude like he’s Jared Allen. He’s had the benefit of coming in and getting a lot of sacks late in the game when QBs have 3rd and long and have to make a play because they are behind and we are bringing heat from multiple places with multiple elite guys.
He’s in an awesome situation. He’s performing great in said situation but lets just hold off on this rookie record talk.

Past four games we have been behind in the 4th quarter
twice

Discount all you want
but in spite of all of the “multiple elite guys” homing in on those QB’s (as they play a heck of a lot more downs than Aldon) he’s the one ringing up the most sacks.
I agree, Aldon is going to be way better than Jared Allen, two should not be compared
Allen only had 9 sacks his rookie year.
Please check yourself
Aldon put up a zero line today. Against the skins.

I never like the
statements like "if he just keeps doing ‘x’ " or “at this pace” and things like that. It isn’t that easy. Don’t get me wrong though, I get excited by his success, mostly because his success means 49ers success.
Opposing offenses are really put in a tough position. Pick your poison. JS, McDonald, or AS. Not to mention our linebackers. They can’t double team everybody. If the 9ers can get consistent pressure on the QB it is going to take pressure off of the secondary and create opportunities for turnovers. Plus, if they can get that pressure by only rushing 4 then that means more people can drop in coverage. That will improve the passing D.
Sorry, I know I just rambled about a bunch of stuff everybody already knows I just get excited thinking about it.
Joe, Jerry, Steve, and....Who is next?
Yes i should of said something like
If offenses continue to match him 1 on 1, then he should be able to get at least 1 sack a game. Yet they have to game plan against Willis and Bowman too, so pick your poison someone is going to get your quarterback.
This was my first attempt at a fan post and a very short one at that . :)
I think he can get it...
It would be nice if he could crank out a couple more multi-sack games just to get there sooner.
I voted that he breaks the record
But that is mainly because he’s about to run the perfect stretch of teams miserably failing to protect the QB.
cmon man he is going to face some mobile QBs who may evade pressure
Like Kolb, Bradford both twice and Beck. It’s not like he is going to face statues like Vick all day.

or statues like josh freeman or Matt Stafford
Freeman has given up a whopping 9 sacks this year, and 49ers only got him 3 times.
Stafford has given up 16 and the 49ers could only bring him down 5 times.
Anyone else find it funny that Beck gave up as many sacks in one game as Freeman has given up all season?
Well Freeman drops like a bowling ball dropped out of an airplane.
easily

that sounds like a lot of work
I’d say Freeman drops like Mike Singletary’s pants . . . . huh, that still doesn’t sound right

Manny Lawson
career sack total: 14.5
career high season sack total: 6.5
just makes me happy that in his first 7 games Aldon matched lawson’s career high and is on pace to break lawson’s career sack total in his first season, as a rookie, playing limited snaps.
If their was a way we can morph those two together
We would have the perfect OLB. Great in coverage, and a BEAST at pass rushing
"I hate it! It looks like a stickup at 7-Eleven. Five guys standing there with their hands in the air."
Norm Sloan
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Weldon Drew
Manny Lawson is (***ing horrible
There is nothing about him that is perfect. His coverage is even overrated. Dude has 14 tackles this season. He stinks.
