49ers Vs. Giants Injury Report: Ahmad Bradshaw Out, Ray McDonald TBD
We didn't get the Thursday injury report published last night during Thursday Night Football, so I thought I'd post the report today as there is some important information to pass along. The biggest news of the day was the confirmation from Adam Schefter that Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw will not be playing this Sunday due to his foot injury. It is not shocking information, but it is still noteworthy. Brandon Jacobs will get the start in his place with D.J. Ware and Da'Rell Scott backing him up. Next man up, next man down?
The other bit of news is that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was upgraded from DNP to limited participation in practice. If he is a full participant later today, I would imagine he will play. If he is limited again today, it becomes a tougher game-time decision. Adding Nicks into the mix is a significant improvement for a receiving corps that would already be fairly solid without him. I am curious to see who Carlos Rogers covers when he is not in the slot position in the 49ers nickel defense.
On the 49ers side, Frank Gore and Ray McDonald remain the two most significant question marks. They were both limited once again in practice and it is hard to tell what kind of involvement they will have on Sunday. Gore has generally seemed pretty confident he will be able to play. I'm curious to see how many touches Kendall Hunter gets in the game.
As for McDonald, Vic Fangio indicated McDonald is making progress and thinks "he's ahead of where he might have been usually with a hamstring." I don't really know what that means for Sunday, but Ricky Jean Francois continues to take the snaps in practice.

McDonald's going to be doubtful
All I can think of is [all caps sight decorum]! Seriously, RJF is good but we missed McDonald’s push and pass rush from the base D against the Redskins, and we really going to miss them against the G men.
Pass rush is the key to victory Sunday. If we put a lot of heat on Eli, we win. If, we’re going to give up a lot more points than usual, and find out something about this offense.
I wanna see Dobbs start
RJF is capable but I just wanna see what Dobbs can do against a ‘1st’ team
If Frank is limited, I think we may see a 50/50 split in carries w/Hunter and maybe 30~33 passes

Gore and the need for an improved back-up plan
Frank Gore is having a great season. As he has other seasons only with the now winning 9ers he’s getting more well-dserved attention, especially nationally. He’s always been loved here. And, he plays so hard, and plays through injuries, as he’s now doing, that he’s often on the threshold of serious injury. Especially noteworthy are his ankles which have been battered, turned, twisted and tweeked so many times over the years. For his own good he needs some additional help. Kendall Hunter, who is having ankle injuries of his own, has done a very good job of spot filling in for Frank, but he does not seem like an every down back, for the whole game, possibly for several games and a playoff run if Gore gets injured more seriously. And I fear that serious injury may be coming. He’s worn out and that’s when injuries tend to happen more often. Anthony Dixon cannot take over for Frank. He doesn’t have the skill set or the intelligence. I’m suggesting that we need to start looking for another back-up RB now. One who can be prepared to take over if Frank gets injured or before just to give Frank a good 2-3 week rest before the playoffs. For the 9ers to go deep into the playoffs they must be prepared for every eventuality. And for this team a really solid RB is imperative. Alex is being very efficient, and it seems best not to push him to throw the ball 40 times a game. The 9ers need the running game to set the tone and to set up whatever passes may come from the excellence of the run.
I’m a homer for Toby Gerhart, I freely admit that, and I think he would be perfect. Not too expensive, knows the system already, has good numbers for a back-up to AP, has become a very good blocker and receiver, and is fresh. There may be others out there that fit the bill. I would hate to be in a place where something has to happen quickly and end up having to pay dearly for a rental.
