Effective immediately: Start Chris Culliver. Sit Terrell Brown. Please!
Since drafting Terrell Brown, I hve yet to see him flourish at the pro level. He played decent at Texas. This year he has been looking real lost in coverage. He has allowed Hakeem Nicks to muscle him, Josh Cribbs blew past him for a TD while Brown showed little effort to recover on the tackle attempt. Ok you get beat, it happens. Bring the man down at least dude. Brown is not even fast for his size at 5'10 190. We must address this issue. With Spencer ailing, and aging, we released ummm, what's his name...dog gonnit...uhhh Phillip Adams that's it. Tremine Brock is a prospect worthy of retaining in the off season.
It looks like Terrell Brown is always looking for Goldson, or Whitner to help ove the top, so he allows his man to get behind him. It will prove fatal in the long run. A team like GB who runs a 4 wide set often with quality WRs at each position in D.Driver, G.Jennings, 6'3" 215 lbs JORDY NELSON! sheesh!..Then there's James Jones. NYG exposed our secondary a bit today. We have PIT coming up in a few weeks. We gotta have some tenacity at the CB position to hang with the BIG BOYS. This is just something I've been noting since the Dallas game, how Miles Austin picked us apart, then the rookie blew past everyone in O.T. to seal the deal. I have really be concerned with this. Yes Carlos Rodgrs is doing a solid job. He needs help though. I know we have a great defense alltogether, and this may seem like I'm nit picking, but I'm really looking at the hole in the seconday in Terrell Brown. This off-season we must get some real depth at the CB spot. ASAP. FYI, I would take a real looong look at going after CB Vontae Davis from MIA. Vernon's brother. Plus Vontae would be perfect forour style of play. PHYSICAL!. That would shore things right up at the CB position, then draft some prospect in the 2012 draft. Tell me what you think after the jump

I'm still hoping to see Brock work his way back into the mix as well
They like Brown because he’s fast though, so he’s unlikely to make one bad step and give up a big play.
I don’t blame him or Culliver for the TDs they gave up. It happens. 1v1 coverage, bad blitzes, perfect passes. It happens. The 49ers went out with a relatively soft coverage game plan and were unable to get consistent pressure. The Giants have a good offense, they still held them to 20.
And yes, I agree that CB is probably the easiest position for the 49ers to value draft. Can always use another good CB. Maybe Janoris Jenkins will fall due to his red flags and they can scoop him up and turn him around.

That is what makes me angry
I can’t remember a single pass play from yesterday where we weren’t getting held or pushed in the back. I understand “if you ain’t cheatin you ain’t trying”, but we should have gotten at least a holding call or two on the worst ones.
Culliver should have made a play on that TD, but that’s just a rookie mistake, I’m willing to live with it. Next time he’ll make a play on the ball whether it looks out of bounds or not. Brown had decent coverage on his touchdown — he took away the break inside for the easy score and with the help he should have had over the top (Reggie Smith failing again) that play would have went nowhere.
So mistakes happened, Spencer will be gone next year, excellent CB value will be there at the bottom of the first or second, and our guys are getting better every game.
And like you say, Brock is working hard — and he’s the same age as Culliver.
Agree on Reggie Smith
being at fault on that touchdown.
I could be wrong, but it seemed that Eli targeted Culliver more times than anyone….don’t know where to find those stats and too lazy to look….but I don’t think at this point Culliver would be an upgrade over Brown.
We’re always looking to upgrade, but we did keep Eli to one of his lowest QB ratings this year, and he looked to be on a hot streak yesterday. So, all in all, I think our guys did a good job.
def. Reggie didn't help
He was late coming over unless it was Cover-2 on the left side and man on the right.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

Some info pertaining to spencer
He is done with football, He has told people around him, including a good friend of mine that he is waiting out his contract. That he has made his money and no longer enjoys the game. I think his play and the way the coaches have responded to him make my friends info sound even more credible. So I wouldn’t count on any resurgence on his part.

Bad news on Spencer
But on the flipside, we need to get younger at some spot anyway, such as CB,FB( Please Moran Norris retire already!), Justin Smith is the exception in this case. But overall everybody’s young. It will be a sad day when Frank starts to wind down. I suppose drafting a bruiser tnext spring won’t hurt. Kendall Hunter is sick at what he oes bu I still think we need on of those 6’2" 230 Arian Foster types with hands out the backfield. But we’ll cross that bridge later I guess. For now Frank looks great.
not acceptable
he signed a contract. the team is winning, so it’s time for him to change his tune and have fun. he can make these kinds of judgments after the year is over.
Mr Spencer, if you’re reading this, the team needs all 53. You’re not exempt. ‘Next man up’ will come calling. Can you be the man in that equation?
Tremaine Brock is the next man up. Spencer is the last man up right now.

doesn't matter
point is…if you’re on the 53, you’ve been chosen to honor your contract and honor the effort that the other 52 are giving. If Spencer can’t suck it up and love what he’s doing, he needs to forfeit his money and make room for someone who will.
it’s unacceptable.
If that is true.
Then we should just cut him. If he doesn’t want to be here, then why keep him? If that is true, I can’t believe he would say that he doesn’t want to be here. Now. Why does he want to leave when he’s never been apart of a winning team, never apart of a team like we have now?

Look
Culliver got beat by Mario Manningham yesterday. Let’s not anoint him yet
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.
Samurai Champloo > Macross
Exactly....
He also had a few plays where his receiver had a step on him and he was lucky that the ball was overthrown. He may be better than Brown, and having him as a full-time starter for experience before the playoffs is a good idea, but he’s not going to be a major upgrade right away.
by 9thevolution on Nov 14, 2011 7:45 AM PST up reply actions
Yes indeed, he got beat
but like I said, I can live with getting beat on a great throw, and catch as long as the effort is there. That Josh Cribbs touchdown was the poster child for what kind of effort I seen with Brown. Almost like what Plaxico used to do to Eli when he threw an INT. Bring the guy down already. Singletary woulda had him do 40 laps for that kinda effort.
Culliver is far from a lockdown corner, but he’s batting down a lot of passes, and has a nose for the ball. Also his effort is always 110%. That is what we need to get the Trophy
by STELF BOMBZ on Nov 14, 2011 10:03 AM PST up reply actions
Ya he definitely had a bad game.
He gave up the first TD(you gotta put your hands up!) and he got beat by Manningham who luckily dropped the slightly overthrown ball which would’ve tied the game.

We need depth for a deep run
Guys get hurt, whether it be for a play or for a game, or the season. Good teams know that. Brown has been decent enough that we’re 8-1. Culliver could have made a play on the ball in the end-zone, his coverage was good. Brown does give up a lot of underneath plays but like I said, we’re winning. We’ll see what happens but we do need more help at DB next year if we want to keep this potential dynasty going.

How often do the Niners try to jam the receivers?
It seems like they let them run free way too much. There was no time for Goldson to get in on the blitz with him starting so far off the line and no jam on the receiver, so Eli throws to his side for the TD. Just 1 example.
They don't press much because they're worried about getting beat deep
but when it’s cover-2/3 they should be pressing to help the safeties buy some time to read the throw and help out over top.

Yes we are winning
However, I always look at the vulnerabilities, so I’m sure the Saint, Falcons, Packers, etc…will be as well. I don’t agree with this new ABEND DON’T BREAK concept. No team should break anyway, but what kinda Rocky Balboa mess is this. I believe it is malarky. I seriously doubt this is actual strategy on our coaching staff part. Letting teams drive up the field all day as long as we don’t let them score. NO WAY! My eye is really on the playoffs so pardon me if I’m a bit serious about tightening things up in our secondary.
by STELF BOMBZ on Nov 14, 2011 10:10 AM PST up reply actions
they're just letting other teams be 1-dimensional
Make them throw underneath all day. We get FF’s and INT’s anyways. Limit the big plays (which we need to work on after yesterday) and you make a team be accurate throwing all day long, taking long drives (unless turnovers or stops, which you’re obviously hoping/trying-for) and then you go score your own points.
That we allow FG’s instead of TD’s often is a thing almost any DC will take.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

Yes it would be better
if the niners had Revis, Deion, a prime Bob Sanders, and Ronnie Lott in secondary. It would be great if they could play bump and run and beat up on the WR’s. But the rules have changed. You can’t be physical with WR’s like in the past. You cant beat up the QB. That means it is hard to stop the pass. By rule the NFL made it hard to stop the pass. There is a reason that several QB’s are on pace to break the passing yards record. Not a QB on pace but several. Bend but don’t break isn’t malarky, and it probably isn’t a a philosophy of many teams other than the Great Bucs teams. But it is a reality. It is going to be really hard to stop teams from completing passes. It is going to be hard to stop teams from gaining yards.
Can the 49ers improve, yes. Do they need to, yes. Is it as easy as just saying cut him and put somebody good there? No. Great corners aren’t floating around in the FA bin right now.
As with all parts of football it is a team effort. Good pressure by the line is needed. Help over the top by the safeties. Help underneath by the LB’s. Good play calls by the coaches.
And on top of all of that, I get the impression form Carlos Rogers that the coaches give them a little bit of freedom to take chances to make turnovers. Which is another necessity of the current NFL. If teams are going to throw as much as they are then INT’s must happen.
Joe, Jerry, Steve, and....Who is next?

I think people are being a bit unfair.
I’m not saying we had consistently great coverage yesterday. However, I do think we had consistently good coverage, with only one or two exceptions, and that we were beat long mostly because the Giants made really good plays.
For example, on one long pass up the left sideline, Brown was brushed off by a defender. That’s the sort of quasi-legal pick which teams get away with all the time even though they shouldn’t. Despite that problem, he actually got back in position enough so that the only way to beat him was with a perfectly-placed bomb, leading properly on the outside corner – right where Eli put it.
When that happens, that’s not the CB getting burned. It’s great offensive play design and execution.
People complain about the short stuff we’re giving up, but I strongly suspect that’s by design: make the other team earn their way down the field a few yards at a time. On a defense where the DBs are the weakest link, that’s the smart strategy. It just so happened that Eli, with great execution, was able to exploit that early in the game. It happens – but it also worked because we held them to FGs.
this
and when we force fumbles or get INT’s we kill even those long, methodical drives. It’s a patient defense that doesn’t take unnecessary chances. It’s got us to 8-1, it will continue to improve, and I think it can take us deep.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

I wouldn't say "wide open."
I would say “open.”
But it’s actually pretty hard to take away every possible receiver on a play. On most plays, in most football games, somebody is open. Teams are putting four or five guys into routes, brushing them off each other, and, oh yeah, the guys trying to get open are some of the best athletes in the world.
Most of the time the pass rush, overall confusion, and basic human error mean that even if one guy gets step or two on his man, the QB isn’t going to find him and hit him consistently. But Eli was seeing the field really well, placing the ball in the right spot, and the result was some methodical drives.
That doesn’t mean our guys were screwing up and deserve to be benched. It means that – gasp – the Giants are a good football team on both sides of the ball.
Your "B" option is the same as the "A" option. Culliver is at the Nickle wich would be stick it out and see what happens.
B Option
Actually put Brown at the nickel, and allows Culliver to start so it would infact be changing our line up. Running a 3-4 most means we would have only 2 CBs on the field obviously, so I’m saying, in those instances we should have the 2 CBs be Roders, and Culliver. Brown should only be in on nickel not Culliver
by STELF BOMBZ on Nov 14, 2011 10:14 AM PST up reply actions
Rogers plays the slot.
And I don’t think you worded this correctly.
Put Chris Culliver opposite Rodgers/Brown at the nickel
You should’ve put “Have Cully start over Brown.”
And isn’t A and D the same thing?

D. was just humor. My bad
Yu made some valid observations/ I realize we move guys around a lot. For example, I saw Terrell Brown on Megatron at time in Detroit. Huh? Why?…It puzzles me why he’s even starting really. But 8-1 says we are playing great team football. Brown just needs to be more on attack mode, not watchthe WR catch the ball mode. Get R Done. Peace
I just don't think Culliver has all the answers either.
While watching that game yesterday, there were many replays of Culliver holding on for dear life to a receiver. He was lucky that he didn’t get called for PI or holding at least twice. He was grabbing jerseys and he gave up some plays too. These guys in the secondary are giving up some plays but I can live with that. We are making stops in the redzone and forcing turnovers too. I’m content.
I'm happy we're winning
But I just don’t wanna keep relying on amazing defense to keep us in games when we could use simple methods, such as, assign players to the CB position that can actually cover an NFL wideout.

Culliver
Almost gave up the game tying score off the tips of Manninghams fingers. Let’s not forget he is still a rookie and Brown has not been playing that bad. CB depth is definitely the weakness of our D but there aren’t any better options at this point.
Call me cautiously optimistic....because I know what the Niners do to people who have real optimism (see the last 8 years).
You do know that Vernon's brother showed up to practice drunk right...

would probably thump him if he showed up to practice drunk here though. That and the Dolphins are 2-7, and were 0-7 when he showed up drunk. They have some talent so that leads me to believe that the coaching might be lacking a little bit there. He would be a talent upgrade over any of the Niners corners not named Rodgers right now. If they can get him for a 5th round pick or later after the season I say go after him, but I wouldn’t want to see them spend anything higher than that for him.
if he is available for a 5th we just robbed them

But on a serious note, I like what the man brings to that position. Him and Vernon are really physical players. Vernon could rub some positive on field behavior off on em. I would give a 3rd rounder myself. But what do I know. Randy Moss came to a Florida State game high, and was suspended. He will be a shoe in thr Hall of Fame. Chris Carter wa into drugs, as was L.T. Couldn't agree more about your assessment!!!
Terrell Brown plays the CB position like it’s a NON-Contact sport. My general impression from watching him is that he either give the outside receiver a 5-10 yard cushion & only then touches the guy after a sideline reception to make it official, or comes up to the line yet NEVER jams or touches the guy so in one step or two after the snap he is already trailing the receiver and in big trouble. Spencer should start if healthy because of his size & experience, otherwise Culliver should due to his aggressiveness, size & speed, even Brock should play ahead of Brown, at least he’s more physical.
If you are suggesting starting Culliver instead of Brown in base defense,
you need to be really specific about your nickel alignment. The niners play more nickel than base. Right now Carlos plays slot and Culliver plays lcb in nickel. If Culliver plays rcb in base, do we keep the same nickel? That would involve shuffling all three corners.
If you have a suggestion, please be specific about your nickel alignment. Who plays lcb, slot and base?
