Monday Night Football Open Thread: Saints, Giants Provide Rooting Interest

Week 12 of the NFL season wraps up tonight as the New Orleans Saints host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Standings aside this is a fun matchup of fairly explosive offenses and we could see a whole lot of scoring. However, entertainment value aside, Saints-Giants is a game of noted interest for the 49ers.

At 9-2 the 49ers are currently 1 1/2 games ahead of the New Orleans Saints and 2 1/2 games ahead of the New York Giants. If the 49ers get back on the winning track, the result of this game is academic. However, that isn't going to stop me from figuring out someone to root for tonight.

I think the Saints win this game handily, but I'm pulling for the Giants for playoff positioning purposes. The 49ers hold the head-to-head and conference record tiebreakers against the Giants so their 2 1/2 game lead is more like a 3 1/2 game lead. The 49ers hold a conference record tiebreaker edge on the Saints, so I suppose it is not that big a deal. But nonetheless, go Giants.

As I said though, I think the Saints win this one with relative ease. The Saints can win on the road, but in the Superdome they are incredibly tough. The Giants can hang with most teams and have some very solid receiving weapons, but I'm not sure if they can compete in a track meet with the Saints. If they can bring a solid defensive effort they have a chance, but I'm just not sure I see that happening in New Orleans.

Rooting for NYG tonight

And for NO against DET. This is best scenario if you are rooting against the Lions, as I happen to be, as NYG win here helps them in wild card.

We have a hologram playing right guard. Great.

Edggy its easy... You just bench the guys when they play your team (I have Alex in all 9 leagues I'm in)

I had Stafford and Smith in 6 leagues when we played Detroit. Stafford was my juggernaut but I played Alex in every league except my money league where I have Brees and Smith. Real Team before fake team.

Oh We'll see them in the playoffs quite possibly

We can thank them then. Believe me Harbaugh remembers that. It was a direct insult to him. They put his QBs health at risk. Not like Payton didn’t know he was installing 3 new systems and had a rookie backup. I wouldn’t be surprised if he put a bounty for our guys on Drew Brees Slapshot style.

How?

Drew Brees is 6ft tall, Alex Smith is 6ft 4in, why do i hardly ever see Brees’ passes get tipped or batted down? But with Smith, it happens every game! Is there that much difference in OL? Does Brees drop back farther than Alex?

Remember tipped balls come through the interior of the line

Not by DE’s that are way up field. If the pocket is solid the 2 or 3 guys on the interior of a rush are well spaced apart. If the pocket is collapsed they are at least a yard closer together.

Definitely have to root against the Saints

I figure the Niners can go at worst 3-2 the remaining games, leaving them with 4 losses. The Saints 2 hardest games after tonight are both at home (against Detroit and Atlanta), so it will be hard for them lose more than 1 the rest of the year. Also have to be wary of the Cowgirls a little back, they are two games back but don’t have too tough of a schedule (even though they play the Giants twice, and you’d figure they’ll lose one). All I can say is that there is nothing wrong with taking a #2 lol

not a magic number because it requires other teams to lose

but we’re close

Giants have lost 5 – we win the tiebreaker
Dallas has lost 4 – but we lose the tiebreaker
Saints have lost 3 – but we’d win the tiebreaker with a better conference record
Atlanta has lost 4 – but we’d win the tiebreaker with a better conference record

GB has the NFC North locked down and the #1 seed, so Detroit and Chicago don’t factor in.

It is really sad that the NFL has turned into the NBA

with selective foul calling…you only get the calls when you are a “big name” player, but would most of these “big name” players be as good without the extra calls? I mean just think about Tom Brady for example, how many extra drives and plays has he gotten because of his special set of rules and protection he gets to play by?
