Eddie DeBartolo Really Likes The 2011 San Francisco 49ers
Fooch's Note: Here is the full interview TK had with Eddie D.
As many folks here express great concern over the 2011 San Francisco 49ers, one man is particularly excited about what this team has to offer. Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo chatted briefly with Tim Kawakami following the 49ers loss to Arizona yesterday. Eddie D had a few comments that ranged from expected to fairly interesting. Head after the jump to check it out.
I'm not posting these to say that Eddie D's word is gospel. The team has plenty of issues to sort out if it wants to make a solid run in the postseason, but it is still nice to see some confidence from the man who helped get the 49ers run all started 30+ years ago. It is fitting discussion given that the 49ers are celebrating the 30th anniversary of that team this season.
It would be fitting to bring home Lombardi #6 on the 30th anniversary of the first one. There is a lot of work to be done for that to be more than just a fleeting possibility, but it does not mean we can't at least consider the possibility.

Amen.
Oh, you said it is not gospel..
Then, FK yeah..
9ers have issue no doubt
But everyone not named the Packers has lost at least 3 times this year. The way media and fan over reaction week by week now days is funny. Just too many talking heads with too many minute to fill on air.
That's so true
With all the talk and hype about certain matchups, it’s like there’s a super bowl every week or so…lol

+1
Let’s not forget that the Ravens have lost teams on the same level as Arizona, and yet are ranked #2 on many boards. The reason? Two wins against Pittsburgh. If we beat Pittsburgh, I expect the same respect.
roethlisberger may not be playing
in which case if we win, everyone will say we didn’t play the real steelers
Who the capital F cares what everyone says?
As long as we win a real playoff game, I could not be arsed to give a damn about the big fat rapist having a boo-boo.
Eddie convince them to FREE up Vernon, Please !!
Vernon is on of our best offensive weapons and yet these are his stats to date compared to some other super T.E.’s:
Rob Gronkowski – 71 rec / 1088 yds / 15.3 avg / 52 long / 15 TD
Jimmy Graham—- 80 rec / 1101 yds / 13.8 avg / 59 long / 8 TD
Tony Gonzalez—- 73 rec / 812 yds / 11.1 avg / 30 long / 7 TD
Antonio Gates——- 53 rec / 601 yds / 11.3 avg / 27 long / 6 TD
Jermichael Finley- 42 rec / 600 yds / 14.3 avg / 39 long / 6 TD
Jason Witten———- 64 rec / 772 yds / 12.1 avg / 64 long / 5 TD
Vernon Davis——— 49 rec / 548 yds / 11.2 avg / 39 long / 5 TD
I wonder what TE tandem numbers look like
Davis + Walker v. rest of these other guys tandems… But agree VD and Walker have been missing overall compared to even anemic offense of last couple of years. Jimmy Raye was good for one thing, targeting TEs. That’s it…
Looking to put San Fran*six-o* here some time soon!
Delanie Walker....
Walker – 19 rec / 198 yds / 10.4 avg / 29 long / 3 TD
The Patriots have a 2nd TE that no one recognizes because of Gronk.
Aaron Hernandez- 59 rec / 607 yds / 10.3 avg / 5 TD
The Pats have (by far) the best TE tandem in the league. We do need to use ours a bit more than we do, but with our problems on the OL with the blitz, it makes it a bit hard to do.
he's targeted too much
he is not playing elite and he is dropping balls. Crabtree is hot now, get him the ball. Then it could free Davis up and the pressure is off of him.
Losses always sting, but I’m definitely not devastated by yesterday’s outcome. These things happen, good teams sometimes slip up against lesser opponents, and the Cardinals always seem to play us tough in Arizona. Hopefully they learn from the loss in time for the playoffs.
"Can Manchester United score? They always score... Peter Schmeichel is forward... Beckham, in towards Schmeichel- it's come for Dwight Yorke. Cleared... Giggs with a shot- SHERINGHAM!"
I think they will learn from this
This loss, more so than the other two, seems like a real learning opportunity for this team and staff, and I think Harbaugh will take full advantage of that to get them ready to make a run over the last 3 games and into the playoffs

I hate to be that guy...
…but the 1981 team had Joe Freaking Montana. Joe Montana laughs at 2 point deficits in the 4th. Anything less than a touchdown is an insult to Joe.

Was Joe Montana Joe Montana in 1981?

Joe had 1 win the the NFC "catch" game against the Cowboys.
It’s what you do with the game close at the end. Win or run backwards?

Blasphemy!
Two 4th quarter comebacks in the regular season… and in the playoffs, of course, “The Catch!”
Joe was money.
I was -10 years old
you gotta forgive me if my memory isn’t that great

No, not really...
As I recall there were a lot of question marks about him. Many of them stuck around for years to come. But toward the latter part of the ’80s, it was pretty apparent that Joe was a potential best of all-time.
In 1981, he was young, unproven and it was considered possible that he was a product of the “system”. After the Super Bowl win, some people took notice. But most, just considered it a flash in the pan. A fluke of a Super Bowl. The second one proved those people wrong.
I don’t remember the Niners really being taken seriously until that second Super Bowl run.
I liked Montana because he never seemed to lose his cool. Every game, as long as I saw Joe, I knew the Niners could win it. Didn’t feel that way with Young or anyone else, really. But Joe was just ice, man. You knew if anyone could do it, it would be Joe.
Hit the nail on the head.
And nobody did take that ’81 team seriously until they were in the playoffs and had one that first playoff game against the Giants… and then the Cowboys after that, and then of course the Bengals who had a lot of hype all year in the SB.

Indeed.
He would just throw the ball then run and catch it himself… The man, the legend.
Looking at stats… Montana, in 81 led 3 comeback drives. (games, 9, 12 and 18). In those games he threw for 4 TD and 6 INT. So the comment about laughing at 2 point deficits come from where?
Look, nobody in there right mind will compare Smith to Joe frigging Montana. But do not make Joe into some miracle worker. He, in fact, did not have comebacks in 81 like Smith had in Philly.
Love this about Eddie D....
Even tho he was the Niners’ Beloved Owner…. he was just as big a fan as any one of us. That’s what made this organization greater than the rest. He put the franchise above his profit or personal growth and went to great lengths for his players and coaches.
Eddie D. thank you for the 5 Super Bowls!
LOL gotta love our beloved flawed no offense baby Niners.

This team is definitely more dominant for its day and age
Than the ‘81 team was for its day and age. The main similarity between the two is the defense having a lot of take aways. Another is having a solid placekicker, as they had with Wershing. Practically the only running game that team had was Lenvil Elliot on the sweep. And Joe was not that good in ’81. That ball in the endzone, Joe said he was trying to throw it away. As Too Tall Jones said, Dwight had “no business” catching that ball. It is within the realm of possibility that this team could win the SB. I’d say it’s just as likely as that ’81 team winning it.
Get used to the idea of hosting Detroit in the wild card round. Should be fun.
This myth keeps being repeated. Joe never claimed that he threw away the all. Both Clark and Montana maintains to this day that it was a planned play. It was Walsh who thought that Joe threw the ball away because it was so high.
And this is not directed at you specifically, but I see lots of revisionist historians claiming that Montana was no good in 1981. Remember this was 1981 when the upstart Niners were playing against teams in a non-parity age. Teams were juggernauts at that time…some teams had the equivalent of A starters and A backups. Imagine the Cowboys as the Ravens, Steelers, Packers, or Patriots with both excellent offense and defense. There were less teams and dynasties existed. Passing were much more difficult, and there weren’t crazy rules that hamper the defense like today. Safeties were head hunting and QB were at the mercy of getting their heads blown off. You don’t look at the stats and compare it today’s protect the receiver, protect the QB rules and say, “eh, those stats are not impressive.”
With the changes in rules, I’m not surprised to see Marino’s record broken soon. The NFL of today is not the NFL of yesterday. Before Brady and Rodgers, there was Montana. Montana dominated at a time when defensive players had a license to kill.
Montana’s throw was against a broken offensive line. He stared down the pass rushers and still threw the ball. No he did not run backward when the dam broke. Offensive lines are never perfect. Great QB’s make the throw under immense pressure. Considering the fact that defenders could hit you helmet to or take your knees out with a hit, he wasn’t called Joe Cool for nothing.
I’d also add that 1981 was probably Montana’s most impressive season. There was no parity back then so they couldn’t rebuild with free agency. Montana won the SB with basically the same 1980 6-10 team. Ronnie Lott was a rookie. There was no Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, or the most of the core players that made the 49ers the juggernaut of the 1980’s.
What he actually said
Was that he was trying to put it where either Dwight caught it or no one did. Of course he was throwing it to Clark. The primary receiver was Solomon but he had slipped. Dwight’s role on the play was to run off the coverage for Freddie underneath. BUT that play would have never even been necessary if Joe hadn’t thrown the ball 3 feet over Solomon’s head in the endzone on the previous play. Even the equipment manager in the locker room after the game told Joe that Dwight saved his butt. I’ve had season tickets since ’72 so I know enough about this team to form my own opinions about it. And I included the difference in the game in my original statement with “day and age”. Basically my opinion remains the same as it was in my first post out side of the one statement misquoting Joe.

You forgot to add "Zing" at the end.
But old timers are excused. ;)
Eric Wright and Carlton Williamson were also rookies
Along with 2nd year man Dwight Hicks. Great secondary.

1989 was CLEARLY Montana's best year.
Not sure how you figure ‘81 was his best year… not even close. I’d even say that ’84 and ’87 were better years for him also.

Montana WAS good in 1981...
In fact, he was one of the best QBs in the NFL. But people didn’t think of him as one of the elite. Not for a while, in fact.
As I recall, it wasn’t until the Niners completely destroyed the Dolphins in their second Super Bowl that the conventional wisdom of the football talking heads switched to “Montana is an elite QB”.
He was one of the best. Even in 1981. But no acknowledged it as such until around 1984.
Until that second Super Bowl, he was considered a “system QB” that would’ve never survived outside of Walsh’s system. Some people say that even today.

He was really good for a 3rd year guy… but he got much, much better as years went on.
