Ask a Steelers fan
Hey guys how y'all doing? I am looking forward to getting to face your San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night and was wondering if y'all have any questions about the Steelers. Please refrain from talking about non-football related things like Big Ben's alleged rape, Mendenhall's tweets, or Hines Ward's DUI. However, if you want to talk about James Harrison's suspension, do so at your own risk. If you would like to thank us for beating the Seachickens and the Cardinals in the Super Bowl, that is fine. If you just have some questions to learn more about our Pittsburgh Steelers, that is the goal of this thread. I have a few questions for you:
1. Do you think Alex Smith is your franchise QB?
2. How much will Frank Gore play on Monday? Will he play at all?
3. Who is your best corner and is any corner on your team fast enough to cover Mike Wallace with no safety help?
4. How much do you love Aldon Smith (I mocked him to you guys in the offseason and a lot of Niners fans said he was a reach)?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Denver’s defense is the real deal, so our offense might have difficulty putting points up on them, but if he tried to take off running, the SF/PIT linebackers would devour him…

You forgot so many things
it’s like Tim the intern wrote that comment.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
My answers and my own questions
1. Do you think Alex Smith is your franchise QB?
I think this will be the same as a lot of SF fans… I just don’t know. I’ve been very impressed by him this season, and for sure he’s earned himself another year. It’s very possible that that #1 pick we thought we were getting is still there, buried under years of injuries and bad coaching and different systems every year, and Harbaugh is just beginning to pluck it out. Still, I think that it will partially depend on Colin Kaepernick. If he progresses well, he could take over and be the franchise guy in a year or two, but if he doesn’t… who knows?
2. How much will Frank Gore play on Monday? Will he play at all?
I doubt he’ll play much. He’s pretty banged up, and we’ll need him to be ready for the playoffs. One guy to watch out for, though, would be Kendall Hunter – see below.
3. Who is your best corner and is any corner on your team fast enough to cover Mike Wallace with no safety help?
Carlos Rodgers is definitely the best CB on our team, especially since he fixed his catching issues that he had in Washington. He’s no Revis, though, and I wouldn’t necessarily trust him alone with an elite receiver (again, see below) like Mike Wallace, so he’ll probably have some safety help. Still, don’t think that that means that we’ll have issues with TEs – our interior linebackers (assuming Willis comes back, which is still unsure) are probably the best cover linebackers in the league, and we rarely blitz.
4. How much do you love Aldon Smith (I mocked him to you guys in the offseason and a lot of Niners fans said he was a reach)?
Love him. Total stud. He’s an incredible pass rusher, he’s improving his run defense, and he seems to have a hard work ethic and is mature as well. If not for the brilliance of Von Miller, he’d be a shoo-in for DROY.
And now for my questions:
1. What do you guys think of the Harrison suspension? I disagree with it, personally; I thought McCoy still looked like a runner until the last second (I still thought he should have been fined, though). Also, how does it impact your team? How important is Harrison to the defense?
2. Will Big Ben play? Knowing his flair for the dramatic, I think there’s a report that says that he’s doubtful on Monday, yet he returns and leads the team (and probably plays well, though I hope not). What are his chances? If he’s out, what does Charlie Batch bring to the table?
3. Can you guys confirm/deny my theory that Mike Wallace is extremely underrated and is an elite receiver? I’d put him just below the top tier of Fitzgerald and Megatron and put him with guys like Andre Johnson and Wes Welker (obviously, those guys have different skill sets, but I’m just talking about effectiveness), or slightly above. I don’t see much love for him by the public, though. Why is that?
4. Who that we may not have heard of should we watch out for? I’ll give you ours, as well – Kendall Hunter and Kyle Williams. Hunter is the backup RB to Gore, who might get some more playing time with Gore limited. He’s been very solid, though – he’s nearly at Gore’s level in YPC and above Gore in some areas. Williams is our #2 receiver who’s really begun to come on in recent weeks. He gives us a deep threat, is a solid route runner, and can get yards after the catch, who just needs to work on consistency and establishing a repertoire with Alex Smith.
5. Final score predictions? I’m cautiously predicting (assuming Willis and Big Ben are both playing) 22-17 Niners, which is of course tainted by my Niners fandom. I think it will be a close, physical game in which the Niners jump out to an early lead and have to fend off a comeback bid at the end of the game. I think Ben makes some plays with his receivers, but we win the turnover battle and are able to run the ball effectively. What are your thoughts?

- I voiced my opinion on the suspension in another thread here, but I’m against it. I won’t argue the hit was bad, but I think this whole unchecked Goodell thing is a slippery slope that’s going to hurt the league. There should be an established protocol to handle this situation, not a case by case basis that suspends the NFL “bad boy” (Harrison) and let’s someone like Ray Lewis go unchecked because he’s a face of the NFL.
- I think Ben plays, although I think he shouldn’t. High ankle sprains are serious business and a week of rest could help him. Although, would that week of rest be better if we got it in the playoffs? I don’t know. Ben will go if he can practice. He’s listed as questionable right now. If he is out, Charlie Batch doesn’t bring a lot. His decision making isn’t as good as it used to be and he looked lost against his time vs. Cleveland. I expect Dennis Dixon will be active and we might see a two-headed QB attack.
- I hadn’t notice he was underrated. I feel like he got a ton of talk at the beginning of the season. I’m not 100% sold on Wallace being elite. He’s definitely an elite deep threat (arguably the best ever), but his short and intermediate routes still leave a lot to be desired. Also, after the catch he hasn’t shown much this season. Personally, I think our other WR Antonio Brown can be elite if he continues on his current trajectory.
- I don’t know who you haven’t heard of. But, Antonio Brown is definitely one. Then there is Isaac Redman our back up RB who is a tough guy to bring down. He’s been tremendous in short yardage situations. Then I’d say Jason Worilds, the guy who will fill in for James Harrison. He’s extremely quick and gotten better each game he has played this year. If you watched our Thursday night game, he was the guy who had the sack fumble.
- I have no idea. It depends on if Ben plays or not. If Ben plays I think we win like 17-10 or something. If not, we might lose 20-6.

Sure, he’s a great player, probably the best deep threat in the NFL right now, but best EVER? That would be like me calling Patrick Willis the greatest inside linebacker ever – he’s great, and he may even get there someday, but best EVER?

it’s not that crazy of an argument really. I’ve heard analysts say it about him, and some of his stats certainly support their argument.
That’s why he said “arguably” though.
I HAVE the memo

Helps to play in this era
Can’t touch the receivers, breathe too hard on the QB, and there is no fear of going into the middle of the field.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
well…ok, I guess…but he doesn’t really go in the middle of the field. But what is the point you are trying to make? You could make a similar argument for any QB playing currently (the era is the reason for their success)
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
No argument
Just thinking that his stats, and yes all current passing related stats, are helped by an era where the QB can sit in the pocket and throw deep with little fear of being hit too high or too low. Then the WR can’t be touched at all past five yards and has little fear of the safety coming over to hit him.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
the QB can sit in the pocket and throw deep with little fear of being hit too high or too low.
So, you’ve never seen a Steeler game obviously? In a game against Seattle, Ben took not one, but two dirty shots to the knees, one was penalized.
As far as the high…Ben has been hit high A LOT. For one example..Ngata’s punch in the nose last year.
However, that is neither hear nor there.
Wallace is good, period. As someone who has watched him since he got here, those things you mention are not the reason for his success.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
Why defensive?
I never said or implied that Wallace was not successful. I’m responding to the statement that he could be arguably the best ever deep threat. Playing WR and QB in the current era is easier than any past era. Have I seen a Steelers game? Yes, many. BR taking hits doesn’t change that this is an era where offensive players are more protected than in the past. I’ve seen Montana and Young take worse hits than BR. That doesn’t reduce the hits taken by BR but the hits those guys absorbed would now be penalized and fined (or lead to suspended).
My pointing out that Wallace plays in this more friendly era does not reduce his accomplishments. It’s meant to put them in perspective when comparing to others from the past eras.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I don’t really feel that I was defensive at all. I certainly didn’t feel defensive. I am getting the impression that you guys say things to get a reaction so that you can call people defensive, but whatever.
Instead of just saying Wallace can’t possible be “arguably the best deep threat” Why don’t you just point out others in NFL history that prove that there is no argument?
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
So, you’ve never seen a Steeler game obviously?
Sounds defensive to me but perhaps it’s just theatrical. And, though I enjoy most of my fellow NN folks, you need not lump us all into any category. I wasn’t looking for a reaction. I was stating something I believed to be so obvious that there would likely be no response.
As for those who would be considered better? Randy Moss, Cliff Branch, Bob Hayes come immediately to mind. Until Wallace plays more years, he could end up being this decade’s Flipper Anderson.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
No, it’s not defensive, it’s serious. It’s hard for people that don’t watch a lot to understand, but it’s real. There have been so many calls that are “missed” that would absolutely be called on Brady, Manning, Rodgers, or almost anyone else. That is not homerism…that is serious. It’s nuts. I actually see the same shit with Vick, qb’s that aren’t “great”
Now, for your next paragraph. Your argument is that they are better. And this is only based on deep threat. that to me means, very high average yards per reception.
First three years.
Moss. 19, 17.7, 18.7
Branch 13.7, 15.3, 18.2
Wallace 19.4, 21, 16.7\
So…that’s not “arguable”?
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
This would be where the "era" statement came from
Branch and Hayes played in eras where you could beat up receivers all the way down the field and light them up once they had the ball. Moss’s averages include his end of career numbers which drag down the averages. Wallace at this point has not played enough to be considered the best at anything (deep threat, Steelers WR, etc). I think you get this if you put in the thought but are a bit too tightly wound from the Harrison debate you’re having in this thread.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
well, your era statement would hit a snag if you saw Hayes stats. I intentionally left those out for that reason. his first three years were 21.8, 19.3, 21.4
At this time, in his career, there are more than a few experts that know way more than you or I, that think Wallace is one of the best, if not the best deep threats of all time.
My personal opinion on the matter is irrelevant.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
"Experts"
Forgive me for caring very little of what they way (no sarcasm). These are people who describe Aaron Rodgers’s season in a way that would leave you thinking that Brady’s 2007 season never happened. People who too often use term “great” or phrase “perhaps best ever” because they either know very little history or, more likely, are playing to the microphone as the current generation of listeners expect.
The stats of Hayes, especially considering his era, should eliminate Wallace from the argument at least until his career is over if not for good.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
those are valid points obviously. I don’t trust them all, and I see a difference between ones who know their s…. and those that are going for shock value.
The ones I’ve heard say it I find reputable. If skip bayless said it, I’d think he was full of poo…

Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.
I mean if you're going to sit here and talk about stats
let’s use some actual stats, not just cherry pick one stat that validates your point and ignore ones the invalidate it.
Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.
If you can tell me a better stat to define a deep threat, I’m all for it. Please enlighten me.
Average yards per catch are the only statistical indicator of a great deep threat.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
I don't necessarily agree
that it’s the only statistical indicator, we could look at how many receptions of 20+ or 40+ yards for example, but right now I’m too tired to do that, so hopefully we can continue this discussion later on.
Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.
Lol. Those are valid, but all of those factor in to average yards per catch. If you average 20 yards a catch, that means that a good deal of your catches are 20+ yards, because in Wallace’s case, he gets 2 to 3 of those stupid bubble screens a game..which average about 2 yards a piece…
But yes, If you wish to continue this at another time, I’m down. I do enjoy researching and proving my point the best I can, I would be willing to look up your stats and compare them to others that have been mentioned.
Cheers mate!
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
you're right
maybe avg. yards per rec. is the best way to indicate a great deep threat.
I still stand by my belief that Wallace needs to play that way consistently for a few more years before I lump him in with the greatest ever though.
Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.
how would receptions count? If that were the case, then you could argue that Chris Carter is one of the best deep threats of all time, or Herman Moore.
However, if you ever watched them, it would be obvious that neither of them could possibly be considered.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
They do, but since you can catch a touchdown from anywhere between 1 and 99 yards, I can’t really use it as an argument for or against a deep threat.

Moss
I really can’t see how you could argue Mike Wallace is a better downfield threat than Randy Moss (or anyone in the history of the NFL for that matter).
Avg. yards per catch shouldn’t dictate this argument . Ashley Lelie led the league in Y/R in 2004 and 2005…
Moss was (arguably!) the best Red Zone threat ever at the WR position, and he was also an elite possession receiver. And, as others have mentioned, he played for longer, so those bring down his stats.
Moss has 29 career touchdowns of over 50 yards.
Jerry Rice has 36 of over 50. A lot of these can be attributed to YAC, sure, but Mike Wallace has 24 career touchdowns.
Best ever, even “arguably”, needs to wait, in my opinion.

Well, that’s why I tossed in the caveat of “arguably”. There was a stat a few weeks ago during one of our games. (remembering it off the top of my head, so forgive me if not 100% accurate). It said that Wallace had 14 40+ yard TDs in his career. Moss and Rice share the record at 18. Wallace has played 3 seasons.

OK well
That is innacurate.
This link says that Randy Moss has 29 career touchdowns of 50+ yards. Rice had 36.

Yes Wallace is an excellent deep threat, maybe todays best. If this were last year we would be at least saying that Desean Jackson was his equal, which is just an example of how quickly things can change. Consequently phrases like “arguably the best ever” can be a viewed as quite over-the-top.

Cool feature
Never seen that on PFR for some reason.
So…
Moss averaged exactly 5 TDs of 30+ yards each year over 13 seasons.
Rice averaged 3.85 per year over 20 seasons.
Wallace has 15 over almost 3 full seasons (using the scoring in the game logs I counted 3 for him so far in 2011). So Wallace is actually a bit ahead of Moss’ pace, considering he will probably get at least 1, if not 2, more such TDs this year.
Certainly impressive! We’ll have issues containing him Monday night.

Good find
Interesting in 1989, of Jerry’s 17 TDs:
8 TDs are 11 yards or less
9 TD are 29 yards or more
Nothing from 12-28 and 5 of 45+
What’s Wallace’s role in the red zone (particularly in the 10 – does he get targeted)? Has it evolved this year?
His shortest TD’s prior to 2011 are 15 and 19 yards.
Wallace doesn’t get a ton of looks in the RZ, because his short and intermediate routes aren’t crisp. Ward still gets a lot of those looks for that reason.

Does Wallace even stay in the game then? Is his run blocking decent? I know it won’t be on par with Hines.
That's one of the things our Young Money...
…need to work on, which is an area Hines presumably is focued on doing. They tend to bolt (being young and fast studs), before completing their blocking assignments. Its getting better, but takes time to learn completely.

Wallace does stay in the game. You have to at least make them think there is an option to pass, right? His run blocking is inconsistent. Sometimes I will see him blocking like a champ and other times I see him get tossed like a ragdoll.

Other than the coaching change,
what do you believe to be the difference between this year and last year?
Things can always be worse....
Not much TBH
We’ve only had some minor roster changes, but they’ve all worked out well. Aldon Smith has been great as have all our rookies, Carlos Rogers has been a big improvement at CB, and NaVorro Bowman made the leap from solid to great, but that’s really it. I think it’s just a different atmosphere than in the Singletary era.

Improvement in key areas on defense and ST
Adding a passrusher (Aldon Smith) via draft to the nickel, moving a better rushing DE to the starting lineup (McDonald), a LB upgrade due to maturing second year player (Bowman), upgrade at starting CB via free agency (Rodgers), younger quicker players in the DB nickel (rookie Culliver and second year Brock), and improved play from Goldson who struggled last season after a good 2009 season. One could argue that the additions via draft and FA would’ve made the defense nearly what it is even without a coaching change, but I think the full improvement must also be credited to Fangio being an upgrade over the previous DC, Donatell an upgrade as DB coach, and the hiring of Seely as ST Coordinator has led to such an improved ST unit that our defense rarely has to deal with poor field position. very little bit matters especially for a team that needed those missing offseason training days.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
1. What do you guys think of the Harrison suspension? I disagree with it, personally; I thought McCoy still looked like a runner until the last second (I still thought he should have been fined, though). Also, how does it impact your team? How important is Harrison to the defense?
It is without precedent; cannot be justified by “player safety” given hypocrisy of helmet situation, the fact that other positions suffer more from H2H than QBs. Harrison is an integral part of the team, he is one of two Pro-Bowl caliber ends that make the defense what it is – that said, the “standard is the standard”, and the next guy in is expected to execute. (Personally, a fine is in order for the hit, but NOT a suspension).
2. Will Big Ben play? Knowing his flair for the dramatic, I think there’s a report that says that he’s doubtful on Monday, yet he returns and leads the team (and probably plays well, though I hope not). What are his chances? If he’s out, what does Charlie Batch bring to the table?
If Ben can walk, he’ll play. Ben would have to be sedated not to play; Tomlin will play him if Ben says he can play. Batch brings in-depth knowledge of the play-book, a strong sense of playing “within” himself, and the respect of the rest of the team. That said, we also have Dixon, who, while has neither of qualities stated above, has a good arm, and can run.
Wallas IS an elite receiver; his pure speed is almost unmatched; what isn’t as well known about him is his ability to break tackles. He has tapered off the past few games, attributable to (1) getting double teamed, and (2) the meteoric rise of Antonio Brown. Wallace is well liked by the Steeler fans. Don’t let him get behind your defenders, and watch out for his YAC abilities.
Wesley Saunders, TE out of South Carolina – big man, 6’4 (I thinks) with very good speed, soft hands, and very quick feet. Also C. Brown, on special teams; he is hard to block and has cat-like quickness to get to the receiver on punts and KO.
Final score predictions?
- Have to respectfully disagree; given what I saw in your game against Ratbirds, and given how we (except for game #1) stack up against them, I would say…27-17 Steelers. Between A. Brown, M. Wallas, H. Miller, H. Ward, J. Cotchery, if we play the game like we did against the Pats, we can diffuse your front seven, and take advantage of your secondary; Redman and Mendenhall will keep your defense honest, making you respect the run, despite the low yardage we will probably get.

As for your prediction, keep in mind that, with all due respect, you guys weren’t very sharp in your game against the Browns… the only difference is that the Cardinals are better than the Browns and were able to take advantage of our weaknesses. I think this game comes down to turnovers – if we can continue to be the best team in the league in that regard, we have a very good chance, but if you guys win the TO battle, I’m having trouble seeing us winning.

I’m sure that makes you feel better about it, but they are both bad football teams. The big difference is that we won our game. And, not to add the Browns are just a bad matchup for us. Their defense is very good at stopping what our offense wants to do, pass the ball. Oh, and our QB essentially died and resurrected himself to play the 2nd half.

Average in all likelihood, as they may appropriately finish 8-8, but they are ascending as they now have familiarity with their defense.

4 questions
1) Alex- Still up in the air, six (and it feels like 20) years later. He’s having the best season of his career. He does a few things really well, and is doing a lot of things better. Still not convinced, but it WOULD be interesting to see what he looked like next year. I view him as a fairly strong intermediary between now and the Kaepernick era.
2) Not too much Gore, in all likelihood. He is banged up, and I actually think Hunter is the better play against the Steelers defense. Small, elusive, quick, hard to track down among 20 bigger dudes.
3) Rogers, no doubt, though the rookie Culliver is coming on well, and possesses excellent speed. Safety Dashon Goldson has also excelled at grabbing INT’s here and there, and laying the wood on receivers.
4) I was SO not happy when we picked Aldon, and now I’m happy that we have him. Good call.

My James Harrison question
So is he suspended for this week’s Niners game or next week? I haven’t read an article that states it specifically. All they talk about is his twitter reaction.
my response to your 4 questions
1.) Im in full support of Alex Smith, and I hope he succeeds to be an elite QB. But yeah its not the sexy pick. Everyone wishes they had a QB like Aaron Rodgers (who doesnt? especially the Niners that could of had him). I know our O-line has been struggling especially on the pass protection, so that has affected Alex’s play. One thing Alex needs to work on is for a 6’4’’ player, he needs to stop getting his passes blocked by the D-Line. It happens way too much per game. He really plays like hes 5’11’’ sometimes. Also needs to work on the accuracy of deep sideline throws.
2.) Frank Gore has definitely passed his peak, its this year and next year, and after that he is basically will be done. This week’s game, its 50-50. He will either be limited or get a lot more carries due to his lack of in the last game (only had 10). Kendall Hunter is picking it up and will be the next starring RB for the Niners.
3.) Carlos Rogers and rookie Chris Culliver have definitely our top CBs. Also Tarrell Brown has his flashes as well. I do question if they can keep up with speedster Wallace.
4.) If we didn’t get Peterson, Aldon Smith would have been my next choice. So I was fine with that. But I did want a trade down if we could have gotten it. But I love how much of a monster Aldon has become!
Brown is having a pretty good year.

debatable
Gore has gone through a lot of injuries and surgeries and is turning 29 in a couple of months. Most of his agility is still intact but he lost quite a bit of his break away speed. A great RB like L.T. was released when he was around 30 y.o. and I do recall him struggling during his final Charger days.
That is why i said T.B. has had his flashes of positives. And any of our CBs could get burned by Mike Wallace.

1) No, but he’s likely now a top 15 QB is which is the best we’ve had as a franchise since Garcia in ’03. It is possible that an offseason spent with Harbaugh plus consecutive years in the same system can make him a bit better, to say nothing of an improved/maturing OL, which makes him the ideal QB to hold the seat until a potential franchise QB is found or developed.
2) Yes he’ll play. I’d bet he plays a bit more than this past Sunday but less than he has been. Hunter is no slouch and could use additional reps. I wish that Gore had been saved a few extra carries in one of the handful of games where we never trailed and were never truly in danger of losing.
3) Rodgers. Does any team have such a corner other than perhaps Revis? That’s like asking if you guys have a LB that can defend Vernon one-on-one without safety help.
4) Loving his play and attitude. No defense can be great without being excellent at rushing the QB. This guy provides us with a potential Haley or Ware. I’ll take that and hope that we can add one more.

Questions
1) What chance do you give the Steelers of winning the division and, based on either scenario, what are your playoff expectations?
2) What has been the discussion, if any, about the likelihood of traveling to Denver to play Tebow and his defense in round 1?
3) Which AFC team most concerns you in the playoffs? Which would you, as a fan, least like to see reach the SB?
4) How has this post-Super Bowl season managed to be better than the most recent two which saw Pittsburgh miss the playoffs?
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Good questions - bear in mind, these answers only 1 man's opinion...
1) What chance do you give the Steelers of winning the division and, based on either scenario, what are your playoff expectations?
Chances of Steelers winning division are extremely slim; it will take the Ravens losing one more game than the Steelers in these last three, and the only time the Ravens have lost in the last three games, in recent history, is to the Steelers. That said, our playoff expectations are (with honest humility) to win it all. We believe the Steelers have what it takes to win the Super Bowl this year; as we believed last year. In fact, we view this year’s Steelers as being better than last years (much better caliber of play in our Secondary). Understand this about Steeler Nation; we are for the most part pretty knowlegable about football, and (for the most part) pretty realistic about our team; that said, until such a time as the turnover of the current roster indicates otherwise, we believe we are contenders for the next few years.
2) What has been the discussion, if any, about the likelihood of traveling to Denver to play Tebow and his defense in round 1?
Well, any time you DON"T have to go to Oakland, its good. Seriously, playing in Denver has its challenges (first of all, its not playing at home): the altitude, the raucous fans, etc. We would be without Ryan Clark, who, due to altitude, would have to miss the game due to a medical condition that already cost him his gall bladder and spleen the last time he played there. As for Tebow and the Broncos – I am more concerned over their Defense, than what Tebow can do.
3) Which AFC team most concerns you in the playoffs? Which would you, as a fan, least like to see reach the SB?
The answer to both parts – Baltimore Ratbirds. (1) Their defense is playing at an extreme high level, and their average QB is having, on his up days, a career year, and (2) because they would annoint themselves as the second coming of football champions (they give their coach gatorade baths for winning regular season games for crying out loud). I don’t feel NE will make it; their defense isn’t enough to stop a playoff caliber team, and their offense CAN be stopped. The Bronco game with them this week will be VERY interesting.
4) How has this post-Super Bowl season managed to be better than the most recent two which saw Pittsburgh miss the playoffs?
I frankly don’t know. The only difference I see, is the change in Big Ben. Why that should affect the entire team, I can’t explain. But Ben has changed, matured. Maybe for the whole team, third time is the charm. After 2005, it was still Cowhers team, after 2008, Tomlin learning as a coach in his first post Super Bowl season. Yea, I’d say, for the HC and the QB, learning.

Thanks for feedback
I thought it strange and shocking when the ‘09 team failed to make the playoffs after starting 6-2. I recall lots of close losses to inferior teams in the second half of the season. That has been avoided this year, i.e. winning last week vs Cleveland. Two years ago that would’ve been a “what the hell” 10-7 loss.
You’ll forgive me that I like and respect Baltimore from a distance (even before our hiring of the younger Harbaugh) and I very much hope to see a Steelers-Ravens AFC Championship game in Baltimore. It would be cool as an NFL fan to see you guys play a playoff there instead of again in Pittsburgh, plus it likely means we win this week which prevents you from winning the division. That’s the best current intradivison rivalry.
I also hope to see the Steelers play Denver in the WC. Those two franchises have a rich history of playoff games between them with each winning at the others place as an underdog. That would be fun to see. But why fear going to Oakland? You guys would run on them all day plus intercept Palmer a few times.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
NO! you can’t be forgiven for that one!. I like and respect them too, until they are playing. Of course I hate them now because we need them to lose one game so we can pass them.
As far as the Denver thing, I wouldn’t be excited about that. First, it means our starting FS would be out. (Gall bladder and spleen removed last time he tried that), and secondly, they seem to have supernatural powers guiding them. I became suspicious of this the second I saw Barber run out of bounds, then it was confirmed with the ultra conservative play calling, and Barber’s fumble when the Bears were in FG range. Since the Steelers are “evil”, it could be a disaster for us.

Nice.
I hope his (BR) marriage is a good one; the way it was timed, it seemed far more like a PR move, but perhaps that’s not the case. I’ve voiced my objections to his off the field exploits before, but he’s a hell of a competitor, and I know it’s a divisive subject, one not best addressed here..
On another note, what are your respective takes on what has happened to Ward and H. Miller this year? It looks like Hines has just taken a smaller role, and had some injuries, but it neither seems to be performing like themselves…

With Hines...
…you have to realize, its been 13 years! That’s a long time for ANY player. Really though, time has taken its toll, but more importantly, the next generation has come of age, and you can’t stop youth, not with the way A. Brown, M. Wallace and E. Sanders has been playing. Its not the issue the media would want you to believe; Hines knows full well this would happen/is happening, and he is being his usual consumate professional self and is mentoring these guys to take his place. Team first, stats second to Hines.
As for Heath Miller – he is a victim of the revolving door that is our Oline. One reason Heath is so great is his blocking abilities; he just hasn’t had as many opportunities to slip out over the middle, since he’s had to stay in and help save Ben.

How long until he reaches his potential and becomes the #1?

We have discussed this and the true answer is that we don't have a #1 WR
We have a bunch of awesome WRs that all compliment each other greatly. Brown would not be as good without Wallace getting double teamed on every play. Wallace would not be as good without Brown posing a threat on the other side.

How far can the Steelers go without Big Ben?
Win a wild card game? It’s not a house of cards like when Manning goes down . If I remember correctly, the Steelers have had success when subbing for Ben. But really how far could you go if the worst case scenario comes down and Ben goes out for the season?

Also, how concerned are you about Pouncey’s ability to stay healthy for/in the playoffs? He’s your best lineman, but seems to have ankle problems…is it the same one he injured to miss the SB?

Legursky looks best sitting on the bench. Just wish we had somebody besides him to play LG not named Kemo or Essux. We need Pouncey, I am not sure if its the same ankle that cost him getting to play in the last SB. I imagine setonhall will know. The ankle doesn’t appear to be nearly as bad an injury as last years. Answers:
1) No. Smith is just a temporary answer until we have our franchise QB take over(Kaepernick). He’s playing much better than he has in the past, but it’s still not where you need him to be in order for this team to win the Super Bowl. Even though we are 10-3, and Alex is having a career year, I still am not 100% on board with him being signed to a 3 or 4 year contract.
2) Gore will play but probably not as much as usual. He’s “not 100%” right now. So I’d expect him to play about as much as he did in Arizona last week, maybe a bit more.
3) Carlos Rogers is our best corner, obviously. And he’s probably one of the best corners in the league this year. You should know that. He’s having the best year of his career since leaving the Skins. He was always a pretty good cover corner in Washington, but he just could never hang on to interceptions. But this year he has 5 picks which is a career high and is t-4th in the league in INT’s with our safety Dashon Goldson. Why is he finally catching passes? Because he had Lasik surgery after we signed him.
4) Aldon Smith is completely awesome. He has been a great pick when so many people disapproved of it. He leads this team in sacks with 10.5 and he’s the first Niner since Andre Carter in 2002 with 10+ sacks in a season. And he’s done all that even though he doesn’t start. He’s battling with Miller for DROY, though there’s no way Miller doesn’t get it.

If you order a "Cowboys kicker" at the bar, you get a shot of iced Bailey's.

I'm baffled by a number of Steeler fans
Do the majority of people really think the hit on McCoy wasn’t a cheap shot to the head?
I think a majority of people wouldn’t be dumb enough to think they can judge someone’s intent on a play that 1.5 steps were taken between the release of the ball and the impact of the collision.
If it helps you sleep better at night to call it a cheap shot, do it. I don’t think anyone will care.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
no, you can’t take intent out of it. You called it a cheap shot. You saying that implies that you knew Harrison’s intention on the play. Otherwise, it would be called something else other than a cheap shot. Unless you are using words and phrases you don’t know the meaning of, you’re assertion is based on intent
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
depends on your definition of intent
I believe Harrison has an intentional style of tackling that is much more likely to result in helmet to helmet contact. I call it a cheap shot because if he changed his tackling style he’d still get the sack, there would be no penalty and NFL players can stop dieing at 50 from degenerative brain diseases.
But in that 2.5 second play, who knows what was going through his head at the time . . . if anything
If it had been Hillis...
…instead of McCoy, the hit would have been legal, intent would have no place in discussion, and it would have made all the highlight reels.
The current rules allow H2H against runners. The League’s interpretation of its own rules however, doesn’t allow for QBs to be hit H2H, no matter what, when, or how, despite the way the rule was written.
The gray area in this case, was the fact that Harrison started his hit just as McCoy threw the ball, so, which was he, a runner or a QB (in League’s mind, doesn’t matter).
A “cheap shot” is an illegal shot – again, had it been Hillis, it would not have been deemed illega, and thus not “cheap”. Unitl the League recognizes all positions as being protected by H2H, such a hit should not be construced as “cheap”.

no, by less than two, I mean less than two. And, no, you don’t get to decide what he could “easily” do from the couch.
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
It could be further argued...
…that because he threw the ball in the manner in which he did, he did not fully “…assume the posture” of a QB, and thus did not re-qualify himself for protection from H2H.
The short ,easy solution is for Harrison never to hit anyone with his helmet again. Our (Steeler Nation’s) biggest gripes are (1) that the transition period from runner to passer was so short, that there was ample evidence to support a fine, but not suspension, and (2) if the League is truly concerned about player safety, vis a vie H2H, why not rule it out for runners as well; the current rules do not protect a runner from H2H.

By the way
You don’t need to react like I think Harrison is the antichrist. So hung up on semantics. Call it whatever you want, but there’s no way that’s a clean or legal hit. I really don’t care less about judging intent.
You don’t need to react like I think Harrison is the antichrist.
See, this just sums up what you are really going for. You say what you think will get a reaction. You have already decided that any counter point to yours would include thinking that you think Harrison is the anti-christ. You don’t really have a point, you just want to argue, because “you’re bored” as you said before. As I said before, think whatever you want. Try to pick arguments with anyone you want as well. It’s all good. you’re not the first one of your kind :)
I HAVE the memo

You’re not the first person on the internet with a superiority complex, it’s ok. Sorry that you feel so threatened and frustrated overall all the Harrison fines that you can’t give an simple, objective opinion on the hit. All you can do is react emotionally and try to be condescending.
hmmm…par for the course from you.
I’m sure you could cook up some ideas as to how I have a superiority complex, but I’m also sure they won’t really mean anything.
Sorry that you feel so threatened and frustrated overall all the Harrison fines that you can’t give an simple, objective opinion on the hit.
Again, another product of your imagination. I don’t feel threatened or frustrated by his fines. Never said I did, never implied I did, never even mentioned anything about his fins.
I have given my opinion about the hit. It’s as simple as can be. It was a bad hit, not illegal by the rules (if you’re going by the NFL rulebook rule that says once he’s outside the pocket and has tucked the ball, he’s a runner, thus not subject to H2H rules) But, still a nasty hit that rocked Colt’s world. I have also said (and I know you’ve read, so this hurts your opening statement’s credibility that much more) that he probably should get a fine, and the flag is ok, but a suspension is ridiculous. This is considering that the only two suspensions in the Goodell era for on field activity were 1) Fat Albert stomping on a helmet-less player’s face and 2) Suh stomping a player after pounding his head in to the ground multiple times. These are valid points. You can say I’m being condescending if it makes you feel better, but I am not. If you are going to make ridiculous statements that, honestly are more based on emotion than anything I’ve said, then you can’t get all whiny when someone counters your argument with fact.
I don’t use my imagination on these things, I am not just trying to start things with people because I’m bored (you admitted to doing that), and I don’t say ridiculous things just to get my desired reaction, so I can attempt to confirm what I already thought anyway. That is more your style sir.
But, if you want to talk about complexes..it seems like you have an inferiority complex.
You are also sort of a hypocrite. You say “don’t twist my words” while twisting people’s words. You say I’m only saying…(A) when it’s obvious you are saying (B)
Your goal is to start trouble, and that is cool, but would you please quit making things up?

Then it will be a big deal… How come it is so common with only him? Outside of Suh, you really don’t see anyone else playing as wreckless as Harrison has. Tomlin’s whole, “he has been trying to clean up his game and play within the rules” is an obvious indicator that he doesn’t play like everyone else… I think even someone with less than average intelligence could tell that.
He deserved the suspension and until he learns how to play without trying to decapitate the opposition, he will continue to deserve everything that is dished out to him.

Yes, let’s suspend him because in the future something might happen…
But you know what’s funny? Last year, after some of Harrison’s bullcrap fines, a few players came out and mentioned that they would rather take a few concussions and risk permanent brain damage than take a shot to the knee and risk their career. Not to mention the fact that not many players, including offensive players, like Goodell and his new rules. With that being said, how about we actually let them play instead of babying them when they don’t even want it?

I've seen it
And I love how passionate “anti-Harrison” people always have a play/video they can point to. That is cool. But the difference between that play and Harrison’s hit (the Massequoi one, since it’s exactly half of the hits in question) is that the guy Goldson hit was in the process of ducking, but didn’t have time to fully duck. And if you think Goldson’s hit was how to tackle “correctly” then you are obviously biased. He blew the guy up, as does Harrison sometimes. He did not tackled correctly at all.
I HAVE the memo

the difference in my opinion
is that Goldson does that often and not once has he had an issue with it. Harrison however, just keeps getting the “bad luck” of guys ducking. Eventually he can’t keep blaming it on bad luck that the guy ducks his head.

but it seems like the M.O of you and some of your more passionate anti-Harrison fans, is to say he “always does it” while talking about h2h hits, but then when someone shows you the problem with that, you resort to the fines thing. I really don’t get it man
I HAVE the memo
With two D's, for a double dose of this pimpin'
for me? I defended the guy too. I don't hate Harrison. I don't care about him. I make regular jokes on NN that when Goodell's coffee is too cold he fines Harrison for it.
I think that the whole thing is intertwined. He gets fines, he has some H2Hs, he called the Commish a gay slur, and is somehow always the center of attention. I admit that his stature as an MVP may influence why he gets fined for little things. But he has an attitude problem stemming from when he was a nobody in Europe. I get that. But Goldson never had a guy duck his head, its happened to Harrison now on multiple occasions. I’m not saying he’s dirty (Suh is) but that he needs to adjust and lead with the shoulder and pretend its high school again and show some form. The best solution: let him play wearing a hat with a propeller on it and I guarantee you he changes the way he tackles. Rant over. I’m going to eat some ice cream

Well, your argument was “then he gets fined a lot for two hits” right?
You are obviously ignoring the fact that he’s only been fined for h2h twice, right?
As far as what he called the commish,or his “attitude problem” who freaking cares? Are we judging him as a person in society or as a football player? Is your problem that you wish for him to be a positive role model you can look up to? Well…then you should look elsewhere for that.
As far as your “Goldson is a better person” thing you’re going for. He’s also an average player on a team that before this year, sucked. I would be willing to bet money that someone could find some dirt on him.

not even close
Not even close. Where on Earth do I mention him being a good or bad person. The guy leveling the fine is looking at this track history. who cares? Obviously Goodell does as he is suspending him for not just this hit but for the whole lot of them and Harrison’s insubordination. You are obviously ignoring that Harrison has a bad history with the league. Lead with the shoulder like Goldson does and all of his problems go away.
by mcwagner on Dec 14, 2011 11:07 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
no, you don’t usually mention it, but that is usually with where people who have those opinions on him are going.
Obviously Goodell cares, that’s why his mission is to “pay him back”. But that’s not what we are talking about is it? We are talking about h2h hits right? Unless the subject has been changed again.
I don’t really care about his history with the league. They are not supposed to fine and suspend for your words, it’s supposed to be about player safety right? That’s the “issue” isn’t it?
As far as “lead with the shoulder” I’m sorry, but unless your body is different than mine…the head is above the shoulders.

Drew Kerr will agree
My anger and frustration with the foolishness of Harrison is at a 2 maybe a 3. I’m much more upset with the Browns’ medical staff in this whole fiasco. All I said is he knows he is targeted and yet he has the same problems. Other players don’t.

IIRC, his helmet went to Drew’s side with the hit, but the ref that called it had a bad angle.
There are so many inconsistencies with this stuff. Look at the hit Ngata laid to the back of Sanchez. He was leading with the crown of his helmet, yet no call. Actually got praised for causing a fumble, IIRC

Does it matter?
Harrison still puts his head down and spears him high. Why does he tack with his helmet? Just wrap the guy up and toss him on his head.
Does it matter? I’d imagine getting hit in the helmet hurts a lot more than getting hit in your shoulder pads. Also, tossing the QB to the ground is a penalty.

Yet why does he tackle with his helmet period? It’s illegal to spear the QB, regardless of if it hurts a little more in one area or another.
Tossing the QB is not a penalty. If it’s after the play, then yeah. Plenty of QBs get dumped legally all day long.
I don’t know. I’ll ask him next time I see him. Usually we just talk about how much we hate Goodell, but I think I can swing the convo that way.
I guess it depends on how you determine “tossing”, but throwing him down to the ground forcefully is definitely a penalty even if its a picture perfect form tackle.

Point differentials mean nothing.
We have a team that is 5-1 in its 6 games, a team that is 4-1 in its last 5 games and a team that is 9-2 in its last 11 games. Better teams perform later in the season. Also, against the best team in your division, the Cardinals lost by just 3 at the Ravens’ backyard, while the Seahawks even beat the Ravens. Now compare that to any division in Football, and you will see that the NFC West is the strongest division in football over the last 5 weeks. Just because there is no hype, doesn’t mean the NFC West isn’t a strong division.

Don’t get me wrong, Harrison is a beast! But the same play that got him the DPOY award in 2008 is what got him fined last year. $125K last year and Deebo made changes and hasn’t been fined or involved in any other H2h play this season.
And now in week 17, a QB pulls up his run and then the short QB, ducks his head bracing for impact and a H2H contact is made. And a suspension is made.

I still think its a conspiracy to have suspended him on a so-so hit that got publicity because the Browns just threw the guy back in there with a fast-food version of an evaluation.
How long does he have to go without it being a “reoccurring” issue? If it happens just once next year is he still a “head hunting, cheap shot artist, with a specialty for H2H hits” or was it just an accident that happened in a fraction of a second of decision making?

that he was fined for last season, weren’t defined by the league as H2H, so yes he’s only been fined like twice for actual H2H hits.
Maslow's theory of higher needs does not apply to Patrick Willis. He only has two needs: tackling people and finding people to tackle.

So, I would narrow it down:
To: Revis, Peppers, Willis, Harrison when healthy, maybe Ngata, and say you have a reasonable category for a debate from there.
I think the point about Willis that wasn’t fully made above was how complete he was, ie, how good he is in all 5 aspects that make a great LB. He is RIDICULOUS in pass coverage, even better than Timmons, who I have watched a lot of.

Let me respond with reasonable points:
Suggs- Wreaks havoc against the pass, not quite as good in coverage, but sacks are important.
Allen: Great pass rusher, but up until recently, has often been a liability against the run.
Peppers- legit
Hali- not as good as Woodley.
Von Miller- Still learning, not good in pass coverage YET.
Harrison- still very good, but not what he was in 2008.
Revis: legit.

What are his weaknesses?
Leads a top defense, covers better than any linebacker, awesome blitzing, amazing range, sure tackler if not the best tackler, disciplined, and his biggest problem in shedding blockers is now something he does great. I would only say that Jared Allen is having a better year.
When did I ever take anything away from Willis? I listed him in my top defenders in the league. You all are the ones taking stuff away from the other great defenders in the league.

But Willis is doing better than Urlacher did in his MVP in ’05. Willis forces turnovers, tons of deflections, always where the ball is.

Pretty sure you need a lot more than 161 career catches to be anything more than a joke in that conversation.
Like I said above, and it was ignored. The career record for 40+ yard TDs is something like 18. Wallace has 14 in 3 years.

Guess which one lead to more points for the team?
The drive doesn’t end when you get to the 5 yard line. Or when you take a play from your own 10 to the opponents 20.
Anywho, yards/reception is a commonly used measure. Wallace is respectably tied for 20th. We’ll see how it pans out after improves as a receiver and becomes less of a one dimensional home run threat.
I will take that class as soon as you take Sarcasm 101.
This argument is so absurd I don’t know what to say, hence my use of sarcasm (don’t worry if you can’t pinpoint it, you will be able to after you take the class). If you run a fly route your sole purpose is to score a touchdown. That’s what a deep threat WR should do. Right now, and arguably in the history of the game there has never been a WR that can do that as well as Wallace has done.
By your argument, I could say that Donovan McNabb is a better QB than Aaron Rodgers, because he lead his team to more points (234 passing TDs to 126).

your wins are the product of a terrible division.
The 49ers are 2-1 against their division. They are 8-2 outside the division. So those 8 wins are a product of a terrible NFC West? The 49ers are 2-1 against your division.
If you’re going to criticize the 49ers schedule and win total, at least get your facts straight.

I knew that someone would bring the ring race in this. Yup, your team has 6 rings, how many times have they been to the Super Bowl?
Meanwhile, the 9ers have 5 rings, they have been to the Super Bowl 5 times. Our 9ers only go to the Super Bowl when they are ready.
BTW, the NFC West have been beating on other teams in the league, not just our own division. We just started plying inter-divisional teams lets not get too strung out there on a limb. Please stop using that weak regurgitated argument – that the ’NFC West is the worst division in the league. It really makes your statement null and void. If we really play in the worst division in the league then the teams that we have played against outside the league must be even worse. Would you say the Ravens are a bad team?how about the Saints? Maybe the Cowboys? Giants?
by Chaotic9erFan on Dec 15, 2011 3:27 PM PST via mobile up reply actions 2 recs
Wait, what’s the weak argument? That the NFC west is the worst? Sorry, but that much is true. (outside of your team) Now..saying your team is only good because you’re in that division…that’s ridiculous. If your team is able to wrap up the division at the point you did, and you’re not undefeated…yes, it’s a bad division. Again…no offense to your team, but the division has the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals…it’s bad…
As far as your questions of those teams. I will attempt to answer
Giants, no
Cowboys, yes
Saints, no
Ravens, yes if they are playing bad teams.
I HAVE the memo

Uh-hunh and we still have two other teams that are fighting for wild card slots, really weak division. It’s a weak regurgitated stigma that the nfc west is the weakest division in the NFL. Yes, last year we sent a losing record team to the playoffs, but grow up this is 2011 not 2010. The teams in our division have been beating teams outside our division all year, I know being over here in the eastern side of the US means we don’t get a lot of coverage, none-the-less we have just started playing within the division the past three weeks, so a lot of the other wins were outside the division. Therefore, not a weak division, a weak argument that makes you sound ignorant when you bring it up. Anymore questions that aren’t a media regurgitated statement?

Uh-hunh and we still have two other teams that are fighting for wild card slots
You had two teams fighting for a playoff spot last year. The first one to seven wins won. That’s not a good argument on your behalf boss.
I don’t need to grow up. I would argue that you need to grow up if you can’t just accept the fact that there is one good team in your division now. Just because the argument is made constantly, doesn’t mean it’s untrue. The fact that you’re sick of hearing it doesn’t make it untrue either. You have exactly one winning team in your division, I don’t really see how your “it’s 2011 not 2010” point is valid here? ( for reference, and not to argue for the division my team plays in’s “supremacy” , but, there are three winning teams, out of four)
You can site that imaginary east coast bias all you want, but facts are facts man. I never said that the only reason your team is successful is because of playing in your division, that was someone else. You are trying to argue someone else’s point with me.
You can try to say I sound ignorant, and you can even reference someone else’s point to come to that conclusion, but the facts are the facts. One good team in your division.
Therefore, not a weak division, a weak argument that makes you sound ignorant when you bring it up.
Two things I would like an answer to on this (but don’t expect it)
1) How did anything you said prove your point that it’s not a weak division? Directly before that you said this
none-the-less we have just started playing within the division the past three weeks, so a lot of the other wins were outside the division.
This implies that you agree that the division is weak, otherwise you would have no reason to make a point of your wins outside of it, correct?
2) You say
when you bring it up
Why would you say this? Did I bring it up? Or did I respond to you responding to someone else? Who brought it up? Again, you are trying to use someone else’s (false) arguments against me.

Now, with that in mind, considering he is saying that 2010 is different than 2011 (which you seem to be refuting) I responded with the fact that there are three teams in my team’s division that have a winning record, compared to one in your teams division.
Get it?
Never mind, I see that yet again, you made a new argument when your original one failed. (now it’s “when your division had it’s own flaws”, which I never argued for, so I can’t understand how you could argue against). But as I said, you are as advertised.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
I’m sorry, I guess you didn’t say that the NFC West was the weakest division. I need to stop generalizing, my bad. However I meant to say that if someone brings the weak regurgitated statement that the NFC West is the weakest division in the league they are far from the truth. Take a look around the leagues other divisions and you will find more of the other divisions are worse off than the NFC West. The Cardinals do still have a chance for a wild card slot, I truly can see them winning out the rest of the season.
My point of wins outside the division was that if we were so weak, why are we winning outside the division? By the way flukes in football are a misnomer, any given Sunday (or any other day) a team must bring their A game or they will get beat, that’s why they are professionals.
Also, the “imaginary east coast bias” is very real, have you watched ESPN or NFL network lately? Most of the coverage is all about the patriots, jets, cowboys, giants, falcons, etc. Yes, most of those teams are good football teams, and only recently has Tebow and the broncos are getting more press, but come on aren’t there 32 teams in the league?
Lets not forget that you entered the conversation about the falicy of the NFC West being the weakest team in the league. Come back to the current year, the Cards and the Seahawks are BOTH trying to get into the playoffs, will they make it? I personally don’t think so, but this is the NFL so anything can happen.
by Chaotic9erFan on Dec 16, 2011 11:49 PM PST via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
My point of wins outside the division was that if we were so weak, why are we winning outside the division?
But I never said that you were. Again, that was someone else. I KNOW that your team is good, that’s why I said there is one good team in your division.
As far as “worse” division, it really depends on how you look at it. The NFC West is the only division with three losing teams. At the same time, the divisions overall wins is comparable to others. For me, what really makes them the worst (again, outside of the 9ers) is that none of the other teams have a snowballs chance in hell of doing anything in the playoffs against real teams.
Ok, now on to this.
have you watched ESPN or NFL network lately?
I have to completely disagree with this. I watch both. The coverage breaks down like this. Tebow (close to the west coast btw) Packers, child molesters, Tebow, child molesters, Tebow, Packers, Tebow.
The amount of coverage any team you mentioned gets compared to what I just named is minimal at best.
I can’t argue with you on what should be covered, I have my opinions too, but that’s not their job. Their job is to make the people happy that are ensuring that their bank accounts are growing by the day, and that’s it.
And, on your last point, yes, those teams are fighting for a playoff spot, but that doesn’t really mean that your division is any better, those are two teams that currently sport a losing record. Yeah, they could
get in, but so could the Chiefs and Chargers.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
So, your point is that none of the other teams in the NFC West are winning games outside the division, because clearly the teams in the worst division cannot win outside the division. Am I getting this right? Because I wouldn’t want to get you wrong.
Not arguing that the broadcasters aren’t doing what they are told, just arguing that there is a west coast bias, and yes, I agree Tebow has been getting a lot of coverage, and if you actually read my statement you would have seen that I acknowledged that.
Ahh and the “real teams” statement. What exactly classifies a “real team” in your world?

y
our point is that none of the other teams in the NFC West are winning games outside the division,
What? No. Why would you say that is my point? What did I say that gave you that impression? (serious question, it is possible that something I said was misinterpreted)
I said that the division has 3 losing teams. (the only division in the NFL that can say that right now)
Did read your statement btw. However, despite the fact that you acknowledged Tebow’s media presence, you also understated it.
“Real team” to me, is a team that actually has a legitimate shot of beating a team like the Packers,9ers, Steelers, Ravens or Saints without some sort of dumb luck or Tebow effect.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
So by the only division in league that has three teams under 500, this is your only reason for our division being the worst? Really weak, but whatever floats your boat. If it were the worst division in the league then they wouldn’t win outside the division. Sorry that would be my definition of worst division in the league. But, I have a need to rationalize my statements and not just use an overused and biased statement.
Sorry to understate Tebow, I am frankly tired of hearing about him. Wish somebody would actually beat them just to shut the media up about him.
I don’t think that there is such a thing as dumb luck in the NFL, otherwise they wouldn’t be professionals. I do believe that the Seahawks beat the Ravens and the ‘lowly’ Rams beat the Saints quite convincingly, so your point of “real teams” is debunked.
by Chaotic9erFan on Dec 17, 2011 12:57 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
So by the only division in league that has three teams under 500, this is your only reason for our division being the worst?
That is not me, that is the reality. If 75% of your division loses more than they win, compared to 50% (the lowest percentage in the next worst) then yes, you are the worst division.
If it were the worst division in the league then they wouldn’t win outside the division.
I honestly can’t even imagine how you think that statement could be true.
The Rams beat the Saints….They have two wins….
your “any given Sunday” argument has probably never been as true as it is here. So because they beat a team like that, that makes them legitimate? Really?
The Bucs beat the Falcons and Saints. The Seahawks beat the Ravens and Giants. You’re trying to say that they did it because they are awesome teams? Sorry, that is just false.
If your definition is “teams that win outside of their division” then please tell me which division is the worst? Which of the statistically better divisions are worse because they can’t win outside the division as often?
You didn’t really “debunk” my point. I did forget to add “in a game that matters” That’s on me, my bad.
The Rams did beat the Saints in a regular season game. They also have one other win in the regular season. That is not going to convince anyone that they are a good team.
The Seahawks also beat the Ravens, who also lost to the Jaguars, but, their entire body of work for the season says they are a real team. That can’t be said for the Rams or the Seahawks.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
So, going by your theory of our sub-500 teams then how do our illegitimate teams have a possible chance against any other team in the league? Yeah, any given Sunday which means they have to play the game otherwise they would leave it up to the prognosticaters and never even worry about playing the games in the first place. Am I saying any of the other teams are ‘awesome? No, I am saying that that whole "worst team in the league cheapens every team that IS in the division and makes them all seem to be worst in the league simply because they are within the division. The whole “guilt by association” thing.
Yes, I did debunk your theory of “real teams” because the premise of “in a game that matters” would imply that you throw out the win-loss records because they all matter when you are talking about win-loss records. You would agree that the more wins you get and more importantly the more wins against teams you are supposed to win against are important, if not put you that much closer to the playoffs and/or the Super Bowl.
Really, does there have to be a division that is worst in the league? Can’t we just agree that they are professionals and some games you win and some games you lose, but they are ALL competitive divisions?
I happen to disagree with yours and anybody else evaluation that the NFC West is the worst in the league. I’ll leave it at that, because I’m tired of beating this dead horse. Have a good morning as it is 515 here.
by Chaotic9erFan on Dec 17, 2011 2:12 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
So, going by your theory of our sub-500 teams then how do our illegitimate teams have a possible chance against any other team in the league?
My theory is that these teams can unexpectedly surprise a team in games that don’t have anything on the line, but if it it’s a head to head match-up, where there is something riding on the game, and both teams play their absolute best, then 10 times out 10, they will lose (Cardinals, Seahawks)
“worst team in the league cheapens every team that IS in the division and makes them all seem to be worst in the league simply because they are within the division. The whole "guilt by association" thing.
No, that was never your point. That was never my point either. I wasn’t judging by your worst team. I made it very clear I was judging the entire division as a whole. (of course, outside of your favorite team, which from what I’ve seen you type, means nothing if the rest of the division isn’t good)
The worst division argument was based in fact when it came out, that is why it kept gaining steam. Last year, the BEST team won 7 games. This year, there is one team that has outclassed their division considerably, but the other three teams performed exactly as expected.
If a division has one pretty good team, that does not take away the “myth” that it is the worst division. It does however “debunk” the myth that there are no good teams in the division.
would imply that you throw out the win-loss records because they all matter when you are talking about win-loss records
No, mythbuster, that was not implied at all. This is what is implied (actually not implied, it was presented without any mystery) Bad teams can pull out wins against better opponents far more frequently in the regular season than they can in a game that either prolongs/ends their season. This is a fact. Seattle winning against the Saints last year is not the standard, it is an anomaly.
Really, does there have to be a division that is worst in the league?
Yes… that’s how life works. Humans categorize and classify things. It is in the nature. It could be conditioning, but there are studies that say that it is a natural human tendency.
To me, a more important question is, why are you offended by the fact that 3 out of 4 teams in your division range from horrible to o.k? How does that affect you at all? Your team is good, who cares what the Rams do?
Can’t we just agree that they are professionals and some games you win and some games you lose, but they are ALL competitive divisions?
I can agree that they are all professionals. But they are all professionals that have the same goal. More of them fail in the NFC west (and the AFC west, but i don’t want to be accused of having a bias because I can look at what’s on tape) than any other division in the league. I feel the need to point out that I do mean currently, not historically (so Drew Kerr has nothing to say)
And I can’t agree that the NFC west is a competitive division. Your team won it already. There are three more games. That’s not competitive.
Again. I will reference the division my team plays in (and again, not to try to prove any type of superiority, or gloat, or say “nah nah nabooboo” ) But in the AFC North, there are two teams that are 10-3, and one that can still get a second wildcard. There is a race going on in 4 of the 6 divisions. That is competitive.
The second place team having 4 less wins than you at this point, is not.
Maybe it is a dead horse, and has been stated so much that you are sick of hearing it, that is understandable. But I don’t pay attention to ESPN or other media outlets, this is just my opinion, which is based on evidence that I see. This evidence comes from watching games (which I do, the NFC west team I’ve seen the least this year is the Rams, four times.)
Stats (which are clear as day) and Records, also clear as day.
Still, I can’t understand why it would offend you to know that you’re the only good team in the division.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
Okay, since you want to try to be right with everything you say, you are, in fact WRONG!
Going by divisions in the NFL and their standings (this is how YOU messure the WORST league in the NFL) as of today, 19 Dec. The AFC South IS the worst.
Proof:
AFC South Division
Houston Texans – 10-4
Tennessee Titans – 7-7
Jacksonville Jaguars – 4-10
Indianapolis Colts – 1-13
NFC West Division
San Francisco 49ers – 10-3
Arizona Cardinals – 7-7
Seattle Seahawks – 7-7
Saint Louis Rams – 2-12
By the way, I am proud that my team has the best record in the division. I don’t care what you think about our division. I do know that my team has a better than slim chance at beating your Steelers anytime they face each other on the field. And the proper response to this reply would be “I’m sorry, you were right, my point was moot.”

First, saying I am wrong about something that was true when I typed the comment, but isn’t now, is not the way to go.
When I typed that, the NFC West had three losing teams. (my only claim, never went by overall division wins btw). The AFC South had two.
Now for your next point of being proud where your team is. You should be, that was actually a huge part of my point. (you ignored that part though). I also stated that you, or anyone else shouldn’t care what I, or anyone else thinks about the rest of your division. (you ignored that part too). Your team is very good. (another point I made) The rest of the teams are not. This does not diminish your team’s accomplishments, and the fact that the rest of the NFC West teams aren’t very good is completely irrelevant.
Your team does have a good chance of winning the game. I never said they didn’t. As I’ve already said multiple times, this is a game between two really good teams, and it could go either way.
As far as your suggestion of the reply I should make, sorry I couldn’t accommodate you. You didn’t really refute anything I said. You just pointed out that, a day after I made the statement, the division went from having three losing teams to one.

First, you take a lot out of context. I said you ARE wrong, which implies present tense. As in, you WERE right before Sunday (as far as records go), but are now wrong in your summation.
I’ve never ignored any of your points of being proud of my team, but thank you for assuming that. I haven’t ignored that I should not care whether you, or anybody else for that matter, believe that about the division. In fact I do believe I have stated it a few times on here. Your opinion that the rest of the teams are not good – is just that, YOUR opinion. However, I happen to let the games speak for themselves. The teams that are in our division ARE very good, otherwise they would not be able to defeat other teams outside our division, which is my ORIGINAL satement. Stating that the NFC West is the worst in the League would imply that they couldn’t possibly win outside the division because they are all so “bad”. Just because you think that every game is not important does not mean that these professional football players that take the field each and every game day do not. In fact, I defy you to find a football player that will tell you that there is such a thing as an unimportant game.
As far as you “accomidating me” I really didn’t expect it. I would however expect that you would acknowledge by your own definition that the NFC West is NOT the worst division in the league. The pure fact that we who follow the NFC West have known that while each and every team in our division is not the greatest team on the field every game day, they still bring something that is unexpected at times and actually beat the other team. The simpleton statement of “the NFC West is the worst/weakest division in the NFL” is a weak, regurgitated statement that will always bring fire upon anyone who says it from everybody that follows a team in the NFC West. Also, as I have stated before when you, or anybody else brings that weak statement to the table you make light of the other teams’ in that divisions accomplishments simply because they are in the division. Check with any of your co-posters and friends, find out how many of them think that the teams in this division have a chance at beating a “real team”. You will find out where the offensiveness of that statement comes from.
by Chaotic9erFan on Dec 19, 2011 8:45 AM PST up reply actions
Ok..not much of that really made sense to be honest. For example, on February 6th, 2010 I said “the Saints have never won a Super Bowl” you couldn’t come back on the 8th and say “See…they have won a Super Bowl”. That just doesn’t make any sense no matter how you want to slice it boss.
The teams in your division are not “very good” they are “average” that’s what their 7-7 records tell the world.
The Rams beat the Saints…you really think they are on their level?
The Cardinals beat the 9ers, you really think they are on your team’s level?
The Jaguars beat the Ravens, you get where I’m going here. Any team can win a game here and there, that does not make a very good team. That makes a team that had a very good game once.
I never stated they couldn’t win outside the division in a regular season game, I pretty much said it would take a miracle for any of them (besides the 49ers) to beat a real team. (a team that wins more than it loses)
you make light of the other teams’ in that divisions accomplishments simply because they are in the division
This one I seriously don’t understand. Are we talking about the NFC west, or are you still on the “my team is good because we aren’t the worst division” thing?
I will not be able to understand how you could get offended about facing the facts that the NFC west (again, because I want it to sink in, the 9ers are the exception) is not good. That would be like me getting offended by you saying “your team isn’t good, because the Browns are horrible” It just don’t make sense.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
wow, i retract my apology, because you clearly said the NFC West is the worst

I did say it is the worst, because it is. But that’s not the point, you accused me of bringing that up. I concurred with the statement that the dude made about the division, while disagreeing with the person who actually brought it up about that being the only reason the 49ers are good.
Boy, I'm three generations deep, in gangstadom
I never said, nor accused you of bringing the point up. You brought yourself into the conversation by saying that the NFC West is the worst division in the NFL. Stop trying to bring new arguments into something that isn’t there. When I stated “when you bring it up” it was actually a broad statement (you being broad) as in “when someone brings it up they sound ignorant”. Does that meet your standards of being accused of something? Again, sorry I generalize, but this is what was meant in that comment.
I don’t take comments posted on here personally and would hope neither would you, there were no accusations made nor intended.

Therefore, not a weak division, a weak argument that makes you sound ignorant when you bring it up.

LISTEN UP 9er fans
The Steelers have been getting screwed by the NFL for the last couple of years. The damned commish has sicked the refs on us. This is shown by over penaltization, under appreciation, using replay to over turn calls and the refs sighing when making calls against the teams we are playing.
There is a conspiracy afoot, I thought you might want to join us in petitioning the league for the dismissal of James Harrisons’ suspension. Remember, united we stand, but divided we fall.
GO Football
GO STEELERS!!!
Since when did Steeler fans become Raider fans?
The league is out to get you? This coming from the 16th most penalized team? A team that had horrible officiating in SuperBowl 40 and the refs admitted they made mistakes . One player suspended and now the league is out to get you? 49ers have more penalties and more penalty yards.
Raiders fans.......low blow
Of course you would know all about the Raiders, since you’re sitting with them on the dock of the bay, watching the season roll away.
The league really is out to get us! It ain’t conspiracy MF, if its true and you can back it up!
If people weren’t blinded by Jealousy, more would see it. I woulda thought that the people would see the hit and say: He got suspended for that?Come on man, this is FOOTBALL!
by steeler fever on Dec 15, 2011 8:50 AM PST up reply actions
then prove it
why are you guys in the BOTTOM half of the league in penalties? Why is it one player gets suspended that the whole team is being oppressed? You can say that Harrison is being screwed with and I won’t fight that as much (what was he expecting after publicly bashing the Commish. I would be surprised if Goodell didn’t suspend him for coughing without covering his mouth). You can say that you suffered through bad officiating like every other team in the league, but don’t say they are out to get you.
What I say.....You beleive.
There is a conspiracy! You would be wise, to open your eyes mcwagner.
But you would have to prove it to yourself, I have an assignment for you. Watch all the Steelers games as I have the last 2 years and see the ugly injustice all with your own two human eyes. You are human aren’t you? LOL
by steeler fever on Dec 15, 2011 9:08 AM PST up reply actions
fine
watch every single NFL game in the last five years and tell me these injustices do not happen to every team. My guess is that you only watch Steeler games and are clearly biased. You have had a good team for the past few years. Meanwhile, my team has been in a pit of despair. Halfway through watching us get manhandled I would watch other games so I wouldn’t choke on my own vomit. That includes Steelers. So answer me this: Why do you not get penalties? Answer that, its easy. Steeler Penalties: 16th, 23rd, 10th, 21st, 7th ranking the last five years. The 49ers had more penalties every year. Are we targeted too?
No the 49ers weren't being targeted...
They were just that bad. Remember when Justin Smith got ejected during the Chargers game.
That referee was giving him so many chances to stop being pushed around before he finally had to eject him. Justin was like “Dude I’m tired of playing for this crappy team, and I’m a lazy jerk, so eject me.” And the referee did everything he could to try to keep Justin in. Finally Justin just had to purposely Smack the referee in the head to get ejected.
I saw it all. Justin was looking right at him. He did it on purpose, so he could get ejected.

honestly Oakland has a leg to stand on
in the last five years they’re best was 27th in the NFL in penalties. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh was 2nd in penalties in 2006.
27th, 2nd, etc.
Is this like golf, where a low score is better? Which end do you want to be on?

Golf scores, you want the best. Sorry
In 2006 The Steelers had the second fewest penalties. My point is that the Steelers are not conspired against. Two seasons having been in the bottom third of the league, two seasons being in the top third, one season is in the middle. Basically the definition of average. The 49ers have been penalized more every single year than the Steelers. I don’t claim that the refs are out to get us or that the league hates us.
It does seem contradictory...
…but how about this perspective – our claim that the league hates us is true, but to make up for it, the league has the refs throw us a couple of Super Bowls.

It’s because of me. I started hating the Steelers a couple of years ago, and I’ve been pulling some strings with my NFL buddies.
It was quite easy to get the rest of the NFL on board too. They were all like “I hate those smelly Steelers and their ugly fans, I’m in.” So they’ve been conspiring with me against the Steelers ever since.
Congratulations on learning how to type in human by the way mcwagner. It’s quite an accomplishment for a non human.

it’s just that people give Oakland a lot of crap and most of them just base it on BS stereotypes. I live in SF but used to work in Oakland and it is actually a great city in spite of the public perception. As for the Raiders, people make cracks about them being criminals and this and that, but in recent years they’ve been a pretty clean organization unlike many other teams around the league.

Who is the all-time favorite Steeler?
Niners will tend to go with Rice, Montana, maybe Young. Who is a favorite of Steeler fans? I always felt that Jack Ham is super underrated.
Very tough question, and one I can’t answer properly. I’d have a hard time with a top 5. I think you’ll find that the answer will be different among Steelers fans depending on their age.
Ham was pretty under rated, and so was Andy Russell. I’d have to pick players that I was alive to see play, so, Lloyd, Lipps, Troy, Hines, Ben…I know I’m leaving some out. It’s too tough

Yea, Ben has been a meathead, almost literally riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Won’t disagree with you there. But, it appears he has matured, changed. Given the guidance provided, he has chosen to improve, as opposed to a lot of players (and people in general) who refuse to “get it”.
JHJ was before my time as well, but several of the books I’ve read recently on the Steelers all point him out as an exceptional player, and very popular back in the day.
