Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Justin Smith Honored For Their Fundamentals
Over the past few days, there has been a lot of discussion about James Harrison and the issues with some of his tackles. I generally do not think it is quite so black and white as "he is a dirty player" or "he is totally misunderstood and the NFL is screwing him." As with anything in life, it falls somewhere in the middle because very few things are black and white.
Nonetheless, that won't stop me from poking the bear that is our newfound Steelers friends. Congratulations are in order for three members of the San Francisco 49ers who were recognized by USA Football for their All-Fundamentals team. Justin Smith, Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman were all included on a team decided by Charles Davis, Herm Edwards, Merril Hoge, Jim Mora Jr. and Carl Peterson. Now, some of the people on this list are clowns (I'll leave it up to you to decide who), but it is still a very cool honor.
Smith was honored for his fundamentals in defeating a block and the bull rush. Willis was honored for his fundamentals in defeating a block and tackling. Bowman was honored for his fundamentals in "gaining ground downhill" and tackling. Here is what the press release said about all three:
Smith possesses a combination of strength and exceptional technique. On the snap, he bursts off the line of scrimmage. He keeps his feet moving and extends his arms to drive blockers back far enough to reach the quarterback.
Willis, the target of many blockers, has the uncommon ability to defeat those blocks and continue toward the ball-carrier. With his technique, he is among the best at using arm extension to gain separation and disengage from would-be blockers.
Bowman consistently puts himself in great position to make plays for the 49ers. Bowman is able to avoid would-be blockers by using his hands and keeping his feet moving. With these fundamentals he is able to gain separation from offensive players and focus in on the ball-carrier to make the tackle.
Check out the entire All-Fundamentals team after the jump.

Being honoured for one’s fundamentals sounds impressively rude to me.

Not to provoke Steeler fans
But I would include Heath Miller on this list every year except this one; something has seemed a bit off about him this year, and he’s had more drops than I can recall. Any idea what’s going on?
Also, this “Michael Robinson” fellow who plays for the Seahawks- that’s a different person with the same name, right? Cause otherwise, they may as well have given that spot to Moran Norris…

Also, with C. Woodson
When they say “playing the ball”, they mean “punching guys”, right? Both him and Richard Seymour seem to have done that a lot lately…

I'm not a defensive guru or anything...
… but aren’t you supposed to tackle with your shoulders square, and lead with your chest?
i.e., not dive forward with your helmet? That’s why you’ll never see Willis get flagged for helmet-to-helmet.

Brian Jennings isn't on the list?
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE‼‼
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I didn't know you catch with your hands!

Donald Driver | WR | Green Bay Packers | Catching with hands

…and how is Andy Lee not make this list? For that matter, the rest of the 9ers ST? I understand Devin Hester, but the rest of our ST are the tops this year.

I agree with several of these players,BUT
Michael Robinson – FB – I do not think so!! How about Ovie Mughelli, or how about Vonta Leach?? You know the best FB since Tony Richardson in his prime!! Leach has acceptional technique and shows all the perfect fundamental aspects of the game, you would want to teach you kids. Shame!!
Second E.Decker?? Really? How about Larry Fitzgerald?? The reference catching with your hands and going to get the ball with your hands highlights everything about Larry Fitzgerald….Again….Shame!!
Also, Jason Witten is missing from this list. The man does everything almost nearly perfect. Without being gifted with the physical talents of say a Vernon Davis or Antonio Gates, he has made himself into one of the top TE’s in the game, through solid fundamentals….Damn Shame!
I guess they didn’t want to put too many 49ers on here, but what about Teddy Ginn Jr. and Andy Lee?? Yes Ginn was gifted with exceptional speed, but his ability to read his blocks and follow them are superior to most in the game, except maybe Devin Hester…ok I can possibly agree with that one….But leaving off Andy “MVP” Lee, there is no excuse, no Punter in the NFL executes every game like Lee does, consistently helping the 49ers win the field position battle, and last week pinning arguably one of the best return specialists the game has seen since the likes of D.Howard, Devin Hester, and Teddy. Lee has arguably the tightest and most sound fundamentals, for his position, of any player going in the NFL…..Triple Shame!!
If they would have named Sp.Teamers other then the K,P, and Return Men. One could argue there are 3 other 49er candidates that belong on this list, Constanzo, Spillman, and yes B.Jennings. Watch Spillman and Constanzo closely next week. Their play speaks for its self, they have solid tackling technique and maintain their lanes/assignments with the best of them. Also, watch how Jennings snaps the ball, sheer perfection EVERYTIME!! The easiest job, which can lead to utter disaster if a snapper messes up, has belonged to A.Lee. Instead of having to rotate the ball like most holders, Jennings has perfectly snapped the ball to him where Lee only has to set it down. Its sheer PERFECTION and quite beautiful if you ask me.
Those are pretty much my only complaints theres a few more, but I’ll leave those 2 other naysayers to point out lol.
Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.
