Respect for Anthony Davis
With a fantastic performance all around yesterday against the Steelers, everyone on the 49ers is getting some credit for their play. The biggest reason we lost our three losses was horrible offensive line play, and many expected this to be a problem against the Steelers. After not playing great this season - and being downright awful in the three losses - they deserve some major props for holding their own against a very, very good Steelers front 7. They held a Dick LeBeau defense to ZERO SACKS. So I'd like to give a special shoutout to Anthony Davis for having a fantastic game. We've been bashing this guy all year, so it's only fair that we give him some recognition for his great work yesterday.

(not the idea of giving him his props...)

Yah... not happening.
I’d wager the reason he didn’t get beat like a drum was more poor game planning from the Steelers to take advantage of him than it was him actually doing his job well.
Gimme 1 round!
disagree
He’s shown improvement this year. He isn’t perfect by any stretch, but he has had better stretches. I’m gonna go back and watch the game on Rewind to see what else is going on.

I'm not associated w/that comment...
I predicted an 18-point 49ers win on Sunday… Didn’t think it was poor game planning, thought the 49ers would just be the better team on MNF for a number of reasons.
I agree that he’s not as awful as he’s been painted, but I do think he should be a Guard…

Me too...
His skill-set is just better suited for the inside. I think he could be a Pro Bowler in there. I don’t see him getting to be that good at Tackle.

He's gotten annihilated by all speed rushers so far.
Say a prayer for Alex in week 17 since we already know the Rams know Davis stinks against Long and they are gonna turn him loose.

Ziggy Hood was pathetic going up against Davis
He was really getting manhandled in all aspects of the game. Davis was having a great game without the usual mental mistakes that compound his physical limitations.

Did Woodley go up against Davis or Staley? Regardless, zero sacks is phenomenal vs the Steelers. Credit the O Line, we bash them when they stink.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
Inconsistency is the big problem.
They have games like the last one, and then they have games like the one against Baltimore. Totally Bipolar.

At least he's improved
Last year he was just flat out bad all season long, so inconsistency is an improvement. Given his youth, I’m pretty sure he will keep improving.
He's still been consistantly bad against speed rushers
Woodley played with a pulled hamstring and left at halftime cause he couldn’t play anymore.

True but
At least I don’t think it’s a problem with slow feet. He is able to get out wide, but he usually gets beat on counter moves based off the wide rush. Eventually I think and hope he can fix that with more coaching and experience.
There are many misconceptions about Davis
From both sides of the fence, but maybe we can get them cleared up.
Anthony Davis is fast enough to get wide. But pass blocking is not just about getting wide fast.
You also have to maintain balance and have a base that allows you to deliver a powerful punch on first contact WHILE moving fast laterally.
This is the issue with Davis. He can get out there but he can’t maintain balance and therefore power. He knows and can execute the proper blocking technique to keep his balance and power, but then he’s not fast enough to get out there. When faced with schemes that present outside pressures or just speedy edge rushers, Davis needs to be balanced and fast — and he can only be one of the two at a time due to his athletic limitations that have been present since his Freshman year at Rutgers.
So as long as we don’t see anything resembling speed or an outside pressure scheme, Davis can do just fine. He works proper technique in his footwork, albeit slowly, but it doesn’t matter because he’s not facing speed and still has the balance and power to manhandle the rusher.
But the least little bit of speed on the corner— from either a fast end, backer, or blitzer from the secondary — and he’s toast.
This is why he’s a guard playing tackle.

Yep.
He could be a pro bowl guard… I hope Harbaugh kicks around the idea of moving him in the offseason.

He will have his hands full though against Clemons this weekend (11 sacks)

We have to be chipping that man consistently
And then tossing the ball right over his head as he turns the corner. Keep him running and frustrated.

Thank you.
His feet can move in place like he’s running fast enough… But his kick-slide is too slow and poor and to allow him to get wide while maintaining a low center of gravity. Reggie White would rack up 6 sacks in a game on Davis because if he wants to get wide quickly he is leaning completely off balance. Reggie would have clubbed him into next week with his technique.

I definitely noticed him going up against Davis, at least part of the time.
