Golden Nuggets: Wherein Alex Smith And Everybody Else Was Snubbed From The 2012 Pro Bowl

Last night, I had a dream that the San Diego Chargers released linebacker Takeo Spikes so the 49ers could sign him and carry him on the roster into the playoffs. I have to say, in the short time Spikes was in San Francisco, he quickly became my favorite player on the team and I can't help but feel bad for the guy. Though the 49ers offered him a contract, he didn't necessarily to run to where the most money was. He went to San Diego because they were offering three years and he needed that kind of security. Some folks have forgotten about him, but it really sucks to see him miss the playoffs yet again. Anyway, there's a lot of Pro Bowl stuff today. Onto the links.

Yesterday, the 49ers officially released wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Most folks agree that it was a good idea, that Edwards simply hasn't been performing. But who takes his spot on the roster? I, of course, say Dominique Zeigler and leave it at that. Imagine that! (Examiner.com)

Some very deserving 49ers were given the honor of being selected to the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl. I'm really happy to see Carlos Rogers and Justin Smith make it, in particular. Andy Lee has also been pretty underrated these past few seasons. (SB Nation Bay Area)

Maiocco has his player-by-player reviews, which I always enjoy looking over, though I don't always agree. Still, they're a good read. Here's the offensive post, and here's the defensive post. (CSNBayArea.com)

Star-divide

It's my opinion that Edwards should have been released sooner. He was a liability on the football field, and I don't really care for what reason - be it mental or injury. "Lazy routes" could mean he doesn't have the drive or he doesn't want to re-injure himself. Take your pick. I do wish him the best going forward. (SB Nation Bay Area)

Here's some good quotes from the 49rs players selected to the Pro Bowl yesterday. Good stuff. (Examiner.com)

And the Bay Area Sports Guy has a couple snubs, and I agree with him on all the other points, especially the ones about Dashon Goldson. (BayAreaSportsGuy.com)

Maiocco says that Edwards never clicked with the 49ers. I'd be inclined to agree. (CSNBayArea.com)

Injured jaw has Walker sidelined (SFGate.com)

I'm all for Ziegler

He’s familiar with Alex, there’s no time to bring someone else and build some chemistry with the QB. We need an instant on-the-fly fix.

Holy crap! I just heard the most hardcore support for Alex EVER in major media

From Kordell Stewart on Mike and Mike. He just made a legitimate case for Alex to be in the pro bowl based on him out-playing Manning head-to-head and the way he is dismissed by the talking heads because they have invested for so long in bad talking him.

Yeah

Just saw that too. And he was right: Alex did outplay Eli Manning in that game.

Can't wait to get Drew out in SF after Payton's preseason blitzfest

While we were implementing a new scheme and new center.

Sean Peyton is arrogant in the extreme

He thinks rookie head coaches need to check in with him before pre-season games or they’ll be punished.

Its going to get rainy and windy at Candlestick in January and payback is coming.

Just out of curiosity, where is this coming from?

No doubt Peyton has an ego. You don’t get to that position without one. That said, I’ve never seen anything out of Peyton that suggests he’s overly arrogant. It would be much easier to argue that case about Harbaugh at this point.

It’s customary for the coaches to talk before preseason games. We didn’t, they blitzed constantly, and now it doesn’t mean a damn thing because it was a freaking preseason game.

The whole thing seems like wanting to get revenge on somebody for stealing one of your VHS tapes when you threw away the VCR 5 years ago. Means nothing at this point.

by 9isEnough on Dec 28, 2011 5:32 AM PST up reply actions

yeah but its fun

your points are well made of course but its really just a game now isn’t it? If you want to be serious Peyton did Harbaugh an enormous favor by getting everyones attention nice and early.

bottom line is that rivalries make the game more fun.

I believe some people on here call them the Detroit Loins.

Win or lose, at the end of the day I'm just happy to see the Niners play well... Okay, winning is good. I prefer winning.

Fully agreed.

Peyton just seemed like one of the good ones to me. Which is why I’d rather get Schwartz & Co. in for a good ol’ fashioned beat down.

by 9isEnough on Dec 28, 2011 5:52 AM PST up reply actions

I gotta agree with you here ...

… no training camp , new Coach trying to put in a new system , I’m not sure but thought there was a unwritten rule about what transpires as far as pre-season goes , just can’t see the value in Blitzing that much in pre-season # Two game , just glad nobody got hurt , it was classless iMO …!!

You cant really be upset about the first preseason game of the year

The starters barely played
There was no real offseason to get new players adjusted
Greg Williams was implementing new blitz packages
And both our teams have come so far from there we will both be 13-3

by mississippisaintsfan on Dec 28, 2011 4:06 AM PST up reply actions

I must have missed

I have never heard of Payton running his mouth towards a team or another coach
Expecially over a pre-season game
The most contreversal thing I have ever heard him say was when he handed Drew the Lombardi trophy and called him the real MVP of the league the year he barely lost to Peyton Manning then we beat him in the SuperBowl

by mississippisaintsfan on Dec 28, 2011 6:03 AM PST up reply actions

Ha gotta love that guy

And I wouldn’t expect a team with one of the best defense’s in the NFL to get their feeling’s hurt by a DC coordinator
Go ask your defensive players if they would play for a coach like williams and you might be surprised how many would say yes

by mississippisaintsfan on Dec 28, 2011 7:13 AM PST up reply actions

You're missing the point completely, but anyways...

Preseason trash talk and bush league antics aside, we shouldn’t need any extra motivation to get going for a playoff game.

BTW

LOVE the Diego Corrales pic. I’ve got a pic of him up on my living room wall. What a warrior.

Diego is/was a legend. He was a fantastic broadcaster too. Wish he’d thought of that before losing it.

The guy arguing against Smith

Said Smith wasn’t the reason they won that game (the Giants game)
But that was the one game other than maybe the Eagles game that he WAS the reason they won

I'm guessing no

think he can use a few different linemen in the jumbo sets. More important is what do they do for the spot vacated by Baylon? PS promotion or sign somebody?

I think not being selected is good for Alex

He strikes me as a guy who prefers to be low-key – likes the underdog role. I would even bet if you gave him truth serum, even with the confidence appropriate to a starting QB in the NFL, he’d certainly put himself behind Rodgers and Brees, and probably a few others. Manning, on the other hand… didn’t Alex hand him his hat when they played this year? Romo or Stafford would’ve made more sense to me than Manning. Media loves that guy, I don’t get it.
