49ers Vs. Rams Injury Report: What Do You Expect From Brett Swain And Joe Hastings?

The 49ers and Rams released their injury reports for Thursday and there were no changes for the 49ers. The Rams had a couple "Full Participants" on the list, but otherwise they too had a similar injury report to Wednesday. For the 49ers, this means Ted Ginn Jr. and Kyle WIlliams both sat out practice for the second straight day. They will likely be listed as questionable on tomorrow's final injury report, although there availability for Sunday is more likely doubtful at best.

This means we are one step closer to a wide receiver trio of Michael Crabtree, Brett Swain and Joe Hastings versus the Rams. The team has alternatives on speed dial if Hastings struggles, but Hastings gets what amounts to a one-game tryout to prove he deserves a roster spot in the postseason.

How do you see Swain and Hastings performing on Sunday? Do the 49ers focus their passing attack on Crabtree, Vernon Davis and Kendall Hunter out of the backfield? Or do we actually see some significant tangible contributions from Hastings and Swain? Any predictions a few days before the game? I don't think Alex Smith can get by without a single target to either, so how do you see them fitting in for this Sunday?

Fortunate to end the regular season playing the Rams...

If the last game was against a playoff-caliber team, the Niners would be in trouble. I believe in Harbaugh and Co. in the sense that they will get players in a position to do enough to win. Even without Ginn and Williams, this team has enough players to get the job done.

Here’s the rub. All season, the turnover ratio has been remarkable. In this game, of all games, the Niners must not turn over the ball. This could be a very low-scoring game. Give the Rams a little daylight, and who knows. They have nothing to lose. Niners need to treat this game like a playoff game.

by bcabbage on Dec 29, 2011 5:23 PM PST reply actions

They have a LOT to lose.

They are in contention for #1 or #2 pick, that they can trade for a bigger or smaller butt-load of picks to a team who wants Luck or Griffin. It would be incredibly stupid for them to win this game.

well, possibly the same number of passes caught that Ginn & Williams would have caught…but possibly not for the same yardage.

I do expect Crabtree, Vernon, Gore, Hunter & Miller to get a bit more first half production and then hopefully if the 9ers have a comfortable lead for Kaepernick,Dixon,Hunter, swain and Hastings to PROVE they can handle business in the 2nd half.

by BigMar on Dec 29, 2011 5:27 PM PST reply actions

Braylon is a classic example .....

The Niners obvious (and stated) objective always is to go with the “… players that give us the best chance of winning.” And I don’t think they would even hesitate to fully use whatever talents Swain and Hastings possess. The coaches have seen an awful lot of these two. Conversely, these two have seen (up close and personal) an awful lot of what it takes to win at this level. Trust me, the Coach and OC will take full advantage of the Rams not having a clue as to what these two can do. I personally think we are all in for some rather plesant surprises. Do not forget, Gang – Jim Harbaugh absolutely, positively hates to lose. Period. There went “the mind-set” problem.

Fully agree

But I’m not talking about the front office. They will do what they do, and they havne’t shut the door on looking outside of the organization if they don’t like what they see. I’m talking about some of the people here who think Hastings is for sure the answer.

Well, the coaches know what vet WR's are available, right?

and yet they elect to go into this game, second seeding at risk, with what they know of Swain and Hastings.

Kinda tell us that the coaches expect more of a good thing than a negative thing from those two.

And the available vet WR’s who are out there, apparently do not excite the 9ers enough to not give Swain & Hastings their audition.

You and I are both on the outside looking in. All I am trying to say is that if Swain is our #1 or #2 WR going into the playoffs, I would be surprised if we didn’t go out there and look for someone to sign. I’m not 100% confident that Hastings is the answer.

Harbaugh has thought through all worst case scenarios....

lets see what Swain & Hastings have to offer….I think all clearly recognize this is their live game day audition.

I don’t expect many passes going their way….but when they get a pass their way, lets see what goes.

My feeling is the 9ers will try very hard to put this game out of reach early… hopefully ahead enough to sit Alex- Crabs-Gore….let Kaepernick gain additional real game experience and he will more than likely be the Q.B. playing pitch and catch with Swain & Hastings

You realize Sidney Crosby, a year after his last concussion, is having symptoms that might end his career.

Expecting Kyle Williams to be back 3 weeks after what looked to be a very bad concussion is unrealistic.

By "they" do you mean Hastings AND Swain?

Because Swain has in fact played snaps in the NFL, for the Niners this year and Green Bay last year (including the Superbowl), limited as the snaps may have been.

by sanfranfanmdk on Dec 29, 2011 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

well we're all doomed then lol

People are getting all upset about a WR lineup for ONE game. With a win, the Niners will be able to rest up and have Williams and Ginn back for the playoffs and all problems will be solved. I’m actually more concerned with the backup TE position if Walker goes on IR

roster moves

I have no idea if either WR will do anything. But I do know the front office/coaching staff have hit on most of their moves. Yes they have had misses (Edwards, RoJo, Applewhite) but I’d guess they have had one of the better success rates with roster moves.

Simply put, they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt for me to hold off criticizing the moves or calling the approach idiotic. Had they struck out across the board, then I think it’s open to more criticism. Maybe it’ll work out, maybe not. I’m willing to wait and see how this plays out.

Swain may be auditioning for a bigger role in the post season.

If he does not do well then perhaps the front office will look outside for an additional receiver (depending on how Ginn and Williams are progressing.)

Based on that premise, i would expect Swain to be targeted a lot (3rd after Crabtree and Vernon). Perhaps up to 25 or even 30 snaps, 7 passes his way…

As noted above, though he is not an earth shaker, he has some experience on a good team and a super bowl ring, I believe.

This is a game that will “audition” a number of players — including Swain, Peele, Hastings and possibly Konrad Reuland. Gotta say I’m missing Nate Byham an awful lot now too.

I’ve got no doubt that whoever puts in a good game will see more snaps in the post-season. And I don’t think the coaching staff could ask for a better stage to test these receivers.

Another thing to consider that no one’s really talked about is that these guys have been with the team for most of the season already. They know the system. It’s smarter for Harbaugh to evaluate what they can bring to the table as opposed to bringing in some unsigned vet who’s never seen the playbook.

If Hasting, Swain, Peele or Reuland step up, it bodes well for the 49ers — having another weapon in hand going into the post-season.

Regarding TO

the concerns about whether he could get in synch with the offense and Alex Smith in such a short time may be much more significant that the issues regarding his impact in the locker room. TO has a good relationship with Whitner, whom Harbaugh seems to trust…

Communication and execution are critical on offense. Could he learn the niner system, which does not use conventional hot reads, that quickly? Can he block without getting drive killing clipping penalties…?

Swain:

With hair like that how can he not succeed?

by ColoradoNiner on Dec 29, 2011 10:31 PM PST reply actions

Because...

he’s never taken snaps on a team that ever did anything.

Oh wait…

Um…

He wasn’t a starter on the Packers team that won the Super Bowl and therefore obviously could not have contributed to that teams success.

Basically, he wasn’t Aaron Rodgers so, therefore, he’s going to automatically be worse than having Braylon Edwards out there running in circles, complaining about his leg and dropping shovel passes.

Unproven entities

Lets see..you take almost decade long losing team and in one season they turn it around big time, to the tune of a 12-3 season. One game left and the closet NFC team is only a game behind breathing down your posterior, you have lost one wideout, one hellacious kick/punt returner and one jack of all trades tight end. So what do you do? Turn to two ‘scrubs’ and risk all that the ‘team’ has worked for? Holy moly I knew it was to good to true, or in another words ‘you must be high !’

Unprovens are what make this game great!!

Tom Brady, Marquis Colston, Arian Foster, this year Kyle Williams unproven until he got his snaps. Guys that are on the Seahawks like Baldwin and Browner and there other corner! Just saying man.
I trust the FO and the Coach.

I agree. This dude Swain has some major heart.

He also beat out a few vets in a competition to make this team. The coaches clearly have a strong feeling about the guy.

"I believe in you guys in the media. I believe that you will find a way to doubt this team. Just as long as what's written is written against us we'll be happy." - Jim Harbaugh

Last year...

A team called the Packers limped their way into the playoffs. Had no running game to speak of and had to turn to an unproven UDFA called James Starks to be their bellcow.

Sucked to be them.

Sometimes the coaches are right. Sometimes they’re wrong. If history tells us anything, it’s that Singletary was wrong more than he was right. And Harbaugh tends to be right more than he’s wrong.

I don’t have any surety that Swain and Hastings are going to put in 100-yard games. Or that Peele will become the next Jason Witten 10 years into his career. But I’ve learned to respect this coaching staff and trust that they are making decisions that put this team into a position to win.

See all the “Who the F is Aldon Smith?” doomsayers from last year’s draft. Or all the “Who the F is Chris Culliver?” Or “Who the F is Bruce Miller?”

At some point, these Chicken Littles are going to have to sit down and shut up while the grown folks is talking.

James Starks was a 6th round pick not a UDFA

And getting RBs that succeed in the late rounds is more typical than getting WRs that come out of nowhere. RBs with a great offensive line (The packers) can come out of nowhere and look great.

Gimme 1 round!

I stand corrected...

on James Starks being a UDFA. But he was completely unproven at the NFL level going into the playoffs and the Packers’ run game was DOA until last year’s post-season.

Now, we could pull names out of hats all day and night to support whether or not running backs or receivers come out of nowhere more easily. And also whether or not guys like Brett Swain and Justin Peele really “came out of nowhere” having played multiple seasons in the NFL.

But I’m willing to trust Harbaugh and his staff with this decision. In almost every instance in recent memory, Harbaugh has proven the doomsayers wrong. Hard for me to take them seriously at this point.

If Harbaugh thinks Hastings, Swain, Peele and Reuland are a better option than TO… well, the man knows better than I do.

Hastings could turn out to be

… some kind of Danny Amendola-ish kinda type of receiver, couldn’t he.

by RomeNiner on Dec 30, 2011 2:00 AM PST reply actions

Swain, 4 catches for 55 yards
Hastings, 2 catches for 20 yards

Maybe they will suck, but it’s silly that people act like there’s no chance in the universe that they might be decent football players.

Cart before horse:

I hope we get out in front early so these guys can see time and we can rest guys like Justin Smith, Bam Bam, Rogers, etc. I’d also like to see Kaepernick-30, and maybe (just maybe!) even a few minutes of Tolzien Time.

Ougadas on Vernon Davis and the anemic 49ers offense:

both teams are playing hurt

are some of us forgetting St. Louis will not have Bradford under C? Or that their corner depth resembles our present WR Corp…it’s not like either of us has a serious advantage over the other unless you include the St. Louis fans, who probably want the 1 overall more than a w @ this point.

We didn’t go out and get some1 because the coaches think we’ll be ok for this 1 given what we have; a solid run-d and a patch-work passing attack (if u could call it as such). Don’t get me wrong though; they won’t roll over, maybe not initially but I still think we’re in much better shape than the thus far 2-win season Rams
