Mock Draft 12/4/11 49ers-7 rounds
Round 1 (30) Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina Height: 6-4. Weight: 215.
Most mocks are putting a receiver here for the 49ers. I agree, as the they will likely lose either Braylond Edwards or Josh Morgan, if not both of them. Jones is a big fast player who will stretch the field and give Crabtree and the tight ends room to work underneath. If the niners are able to keep their receivers, look for them to take the best player available here.
Jones is one of the most underrated offensive playmakers in college football. He is a big, fast playmaker who could be more productive if North Carolina would give him more opportunities to catch passes. Jones is a tough receiver to bring down after the catch and uses his size well to make catches while getting physical with defenders. He can produce as a possession receiver and has the ability to stretch a defense with plays downfield. Thus far in 2011, Jones has 54 receptions for 841 yards and eight touchdowns. If he played at Oklahoma, USC, Arizona, Oklahoma State or Stanford, Jones would have massive production.
Round 2 Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State Height: 6-5. Weight: 311.
This might seem a little early for Still, as well as questionable in terms of team need. In reality, this is a perfect fit. The niners get a player with a high motor who can play any position along the D-line. He can immediately step in and provide some depth and an influx of energy when needed. Adding Still to an already elite D-line will spell trouble for any offense trying to move the ball. He also has the potential be come a full time starter at either the DE or DT position, depending on how much he fills out.
Still is having a superb senior season. He has been a playmaker and the leader of the Penn State defense. Still has good size, surprising speed and real power. He played Alabama tough early this season. Thus far in 2011, Still has 53 tackles with 16.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks. He has recorded at least one tackle for a loss in every game this season. Still has shown the ability to fight through double-teams and still be disruptive.
Round 3 Ryan Miller, G, Colorado Height: 6-8. Weight: 310
Adam Snyder has played well at RG this season, and will continue to manage the position while Ryan Miller develops. This guy is a physical beast who excells in run blocking but is quickly becoming a force in the passing game as well. He has all the tools to become an all pro at the next level, and could conceivably start as a rookie if needed.
Miller is having a strong senior season with some impressive games. He's shown the ability to be a forceful run blocker. Miller is a very good athlete and has excellent quickness to fire out of his stance to get to the second level. He anchors well in pass rush and has the mobility to slide with defenders. Miller has the skill set to get some consideration at right tackle.
Round 4 Ben Habern, C, Oklahoma Height: 6-2. Weight: 291
Another BPA pick, this guy would have gone much higher if not for the injury suffered mid season. With Goodwin not getting any younger, here is a guy to develop.
Habern started the season strong with three good games for the Sooners. He broke his arm against Missouri and has missed the last four games. Habern is expected to be out another 2-4 weeks. The Oklahoma offense has really missed him.
Round 5 Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana Height: 6-2 Weight: 204.
A physical beast, he would have gone higher if not for the arrest earlier this year. This may be a bit of a homer pick as I am a Montana native, but he truly has all the tools to excel at the next level. With this pick, the 49ers find a starter with a late round pick.
Round 6 Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson Height: 5-10. Weight: 190.
A late round speedster, Ellington will serve as a nice change of pace with Gore and Hunter leading the charge.
Ellington has averaged 5.3 yards per carry and totaled 740 yards rushing with seven touchdowns this season. He struggled against Florida State and Virginia Tech while producing big games against Maryland, Boston College and Wofford. Ellington rarely gets any yards after contact.
Round 7 Mike Martin, DT, Michigan Height: 6-2. Weight: 304.
A big guy, who will provide good depth. May never be a stud, but will do a decent job taking up blockers and allowing our studs Willis and Bowman to wreck havock.

If we get Martin in the 7th round, thats an all time steal. Hes a beast with a relentless motor, got All big ten honors and is definitely a top 2 round pick IMO

CBS Draft
has him at 147 which would be in the 5th round. New Era has him at 114 which would be mid 4th

Don't want a first round WR,
We have bigger needs at O-line and at corner.
Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)
1st Round receiver
I agree that right now we do not need a receiver, but fast forward to the end of the season, Josh Morgan will want a fairly decent sized contract, as will Braylon, if we lose those two, we would be left very thin. Culliver is up and coming and will be a suitable number 2 CB, and our line can be addressed in later rounds. Mike Person and Dan Kilgore provide depth and I think Person will become a starter sooner rather than later. With a thin group of WRs in this years draft, the 1st round is the best chance to get a good one.

Morgan is gonna demand a big contract coming off injury? Braylon while coming off a season he's been injured and unproductive the entire time?
Neither one is going to get big money from anybody. Morgan wants to come back anyways.
“Our line can be addressed in later rounds” Oh really? So we can get more guys like Kilgore and Person that are at best projects? We have a gaping hole at RG and RT and you wanna fill it with dudes that can’t play for years. We should be take a 2nd/3rd round OT and move him to guard. I noticed this trend when I was looking at the 08 draft. Both Josh Sitton and Carl Nicks were tackles in college taken in the 3rd/4th and both are pro bowl caliber guards.
A less talented OT can make 1 hell of a guard. If we don’t do this we should move Anthony Davis over and draft a guy that’s REALLY an NFL tackle with lateral movement skills

And drafting that OT requires a 1st or 2nd round pick.

It's hard to say just how much need they're going to put into the line
There’s not a whole lot of NFL ready OT talent in the draft. So, I can’t see them taking one high. They already have projects like Boone, Person and Kilgore, so they don’t necessarily need to take another project either. On the interior they have Goodwin for another 2 years. They’ll re-sign Snyder because he’s a starter and the primary center back-up.
If they take a lineman I hope it’s a top notch center to eventually replace Goodwin, but I don’t know that they have the roster space for another interior lineman, especially if Davis ends up at guard.
My guess is they take another mid to late round tackle. The Davis project will continue for another year. The only lineman that was fished out this year was Rachal.
As for WR, my biggest draft crush right now is Kendall Wright. Would not be upset with him. Kyle Williams and Kendall Wright hot damn, would be an explosive couple of WRs. I want them to have WRs that scare the defense and Morgan and Crabtree do not scare the defense. Edwards could do it, but I just question whether he’d want to be back in SF unless something really clicks in this last month and playoffs.
Safe bet of course is that they take a corner. Here’s hoping Jenkins falls in that case. Otherwise, wouldn’t be against a trade down, and getting Wright high in the 2nd.

There are 3 guys that are relatively NFL ready Tackles
Kalil – who will be DOMINANT sooner rather than later. Has the potential to be an All-Pro caliber Tackle.
Martin – Who could be very very good but had good talent all around him at Stanford so I’m really going to abstain on guessing him. I would pass unless he slipped.
Riley Reiff – Likely will be very good but never elite. Red Shirt Junior. Another Iowa product so he’s well coached and will be NFL ready sooner rather than later. Not sure as to his intelligence which you want in a LT. His major is “interdepartmental studies” which could mean any number of things – 1. he knew he was going to the NFL and didn’t worry about his major (could be bad, could mean nothing at all). 2. He didn’t want to put in the work towards a more difficult degree (BADBADBAD) 3. Not really smart enough to handle a more difficult curriculum (not horrible but not a plus and sketchy having a dumb guy protecting your QBs blindside)

Only Kalil is worthy of a top 10 pick
Martin and Reiff go anywhere from 10-30 probably somewhere between 13-26

Mike Adams!
I agree with the idea to draft a guy with NFL ready lateral movement skills. The guy is Mike Adams.
I also agree with moving a T to G. Anthony Davis would be a pro bowl RG, no doubt, and the right side would be sold.
I see where you are coming from but...
It comes down to what is going to happen with the current players on our roster, you are banking on us keeping receivers, where I am not. We may not even want Edwards back even if it is at a low rate seeing how his performance has been so far this year.
You also seem to think that Anthony Davis is not our future at RT whereas I do. He is only 22 right now and is a physical beast who is continously getting better. Goodwin will be steady for at least a few more years. Between Boone, Kilgore, Person and who ever we get in the mid rounds next year we will find what we are looking for at RG.
The idea of getting a tackle in the mid rounds is a good idea. It allows you to take the best player on a college O-line and convert him to a position which is easier to play. Person was a LT at Montana State.

3rd round wr; defense first two picks: dt or olb or cb
highly doubt o-line gets drafted before 4th round

o-line
For the first time in a long time, the 49ers are in a position where they can look for the best players available, rather than drafting for positional need. That is why I predict them taking Ryan Miller in the 3rd. It would not suprise me at all if they decided to take an o-line player as high as the 2nd. If the 49ers find someone they think can be a stud for years to come at the RG position, why wouldn’t they take him early?

My take
Their biggest need is O-line. I watch other games and the QB seems like he has all day to throw. Not with the 49ers. Also, they keep VD and Gore in a lot on protection. This is limiting their offense and the lack of time is limiting the chance for deeper strikes. Rachal is surely gone after this year. Davis is only average at RT and Staley is just slightly above average. So, I think the #1 need for the 49ers is improved OL.
They need WR, but can bring back Braylon, Morgan, or chase DeSean Jackson, Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Colston as big name free agents, or a sleeper like Meachem.
They need DB help at CB and/or FS especially if Goldson does not come back (I want him back)
They need a 4th OLB as it’s a weakness to only have 3 and will only have 2 if Brooks does not get resigned (I want him back too)
It would be nice to get a DE who could eventually replace J Smith or a big DT but those needs are not critical with RJF a good backup, Sopoaga playing so well, and Dobbs a good future prospect. BTW – Devon Still will no be available in late round 2. He’ll go earlier.
It would also be nice to upgrade the RB depth but I doubt they can find someone better than Boobie Dixon in the late rounds.
So my take:
Round 1: OT Mike Adams Ohio St, 6-6 320 5.28
This would allow the 49ers to move Anthony Davis to RG which would vastly improve the right side. Mike Adams is athletic enough to handle the outside speed rush where Davis gets beat. Davis has history at RG already in college too.
Round 2: – OLB Bruce Irvin West Virginia 6-2 245 4.54
If Ronnell Lewis, Brandon Jenkins, or Brandon Lindsey are still available then pick one of them, otherwise Bruce Irvin is an athletic playmaker who will continue to improve with more experience at the position.
3.96 – WR Joe Adams, Arkansas, 5-11 190 4.38
I’d love to see the 49ers get DeSean Jackson in free agency, but this would be a much cheaper way to get a similar player who can score from anywhere on the field.
4.128 – CB Leonard Johnson, Iowa St, 5-10 202 4.49
Johnson played great against Justin Blackmon. He should bring good depth and good value as a 4th round pick.
5.160 – FS George Iloka, Boise St, 6-3, 215, 4.50
The 49ers should consider taking TJ MacDonald in the 2nd but he might not be available there and they would get better value taking an OLB and getting great value here with Iloka.
6.190 – WR Chris Owusu, Standford, 6-0 200 4.48
If RB Jeff Demps with 4.26 speed is still available, then that would be a good pick here otherwise getting Chris Owusu would give the 49ers great value at WR with someone who would come in knowing the system. If Chris Baldwin is any indication, then Owusu might be a sleeper.
7.224 – DT DaJohn Harris, USC, 6-4, 310 5.16
Another late round DT to join the with Ian Williams as a DT development prospect. DaJohn Harris is a very athletic player.
Owusu is done. Too many concussions
Not worth anything except a UDFA. What we did to Jahvid Best somebody will do to Owusu. Probably within the first 2 years

Corner in the first
Guard in the second. Wouldn’t want them to reach for either of those there though, only if the right player is there for our pick
Braylon Edwards should goo
he’s not really been productive w/ the team, mostly injured this year and I actually think our team is better when he’s gone.
"Winning means being unafraid to lose." – Fran Tarkenton
Braylon should stay
We really don’t have a good body of evidence on him since he has been injured. He’s a pretty darn good WR who will probably be undervalued next year. I thought he played hard in the first 1/4 of the season before he got hurt. That was before Crabs and the offense was really clicking at all. I think he would be a good matchup weapon for us if he were healthy. Wait until the end of the season. Maybe he will have some big games for us in the playoffs.
My take on it.
(Note: HW and pick positions as well as 40 times based of of info from CBS Draft information.)
Rd 1 Pick 30 CB Chase Minifield 6’0" 185 lbs 4.49 40 – A line up of Rogers, Cully and Chase, and Brock and Brown will be pretty powerful. And eventually when Rogers is gone, Cully and Chase will be our solid CB corps with Brock following up as a 3rd.
Rd 2 62 OT Levy Adcock – 6’ 5" 322 lbs – Solid tackle at a great pick point.
Rd 3 94 RB Montee Ball 5’11" 212 lbs 4.57 40 or DE/OLB Andre Branch 6’4" 260 lbs– Montee could be groomed as an eventual replacement for Gore and could be a nice one two punch with Hunter. Or Branch could be groomed to be the opposite side of Aldon.
Rd 4 126 WR Jeff Fuller – 6’3" 220 lbs, 4.52 40 or Brian Quick 6’4" 216 lbs 4.52 40 – Either would be a nice pick up at this point in the ball game.
Rd 5 158 CB/FS Trumaine Johnson 6’2" 204 lbs 4.52 40 – A FS that can play both spots in a pinch
Rd 6 190 DT Derric Wolfe – A BPA pick as much as anything. Also as options, OLB Jack Crawford or WR Lance Lewis
Rd 7 222 OC Moe Petrus – 6’2" 302 lbs or Chris Owusu 6’0" 200 lbs 4.48 40 – Either would be a great catch (pun intended) here.

Poopy draft
We need a CB, WR, and a 5-tech DE (that’s Justin Smith, right?) to be the heir apparent, in no particular order. I wouldn’t be upset if we got another OLB, either. We’re gonna be picking at the bottom of the first, though.
What about Cliff Harris? He got dismissed by Oregon but the boy can play!
Alex Smith is my homeboy.
Ninjames on Anthony Dixon's Tweeting:
"He’s going for the ‘T’ key, he should probably turn to it, but he stops and checks out the ‘R’ key first, then doubles back for a look at the ‘Y’ key, then by the time he decides to go back to ‘T’ to get some words typed, he’s brought down for a two-yard loss, ending up with the ‘G’ key."
Harris no higher than the 6th. He has to learn there are consequences to his actions
If he doesn’t he’ll continue to FQ Up at the NFL level. Also concerned about Jenkins at the NFL level. We have leaders now but that doesn’t always mean anything.
