49ers 2012 Free Agents: Let The Offers Begin

For those that missed it yesterday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with Alex Boone on a four year contract extension that will keep the backup offensive tackle in town through 2015. Boone reportedly received a $1.7 million signing bonus and has a salary breakdown as follows:

2012: $540,000 ($50,000 workout bonus
2013: $950,000 ($540K guaranteed; up to $600,000 in roster bonuses; $50,000 workout bonus)
2014: $950,000 (up to $400,000 in roster bonuses; $50,000 workout bonus)
2015: $1.2 million (up to $400,000 in roster bonuses; $50,000 workout bonus)

In MM's post regarding the topic (linked above), he reports a league source told CSNBayArea.com the 49ers have already made contract offers to other players but all were turned down. This group of players reportedly included OLB Ahmad Brooks, OG Adam Snyder, LB Larry Grant and S C.J. Spillman. While it would be nice to get some deals done, it is all a process that will take some time.

Given the state of the 49ers roster, there is plenty of work to be done heading into the 2012 offseason. The 49ers signed a lot of players to one-year deals. Given the team's success, that raises all sorts of interesting questions as the season moves along.

After the jump I've posted the listed of free agents after this season, as per Maiocco. EFA means exclusive rights free agent, which basically means they can only negotiate with the 49ers. RFA means restricted free agent. An RFA can negotiate with other teams, but 49ers have right of first refusal on the contract and get draft pick compensation if they do not match the offer.

Star-divide

CB Tramaine Brock (EFA)
LB Ahmad Brooks
LB Blake Costanzo
WR Braylon Edwards
WR Ted Ginn
S Dashon Goldson
LB Tavares Gooden
LB Larry Grant (RFA)
WR Joshua Morgan
TE Justin Peelle
RG Chilo Rachal
CB Carlos Rogers
FB Moran Norris
QB Alex Smith
S Reggie Smith
OL Adam Snyder
DB C.J. Spillman (RFA)
WR Brett Swain
DT Will Tukuafu (EFA)
S Madieu Williams

Alex Boone should push Staley and Davis

for a starting spot next offseason. I wish I could go to the camp practices. No matter who ends up starting, the Niners will have good starters and a solid “next man up” at Tackle.

Staley is pretty safe

I think we’re in for at least another half a season of Davis. He’s shown enough that the coaching staff will see what they can get out of him with a full off-season.

Keep these guys

Tramaine Brock, Ahmad Brooks, Blake Costanzo, Ted Ginn, Dashon Goldson, Tavares Gooden, Larry Grant, Joshua Morgan, Carlos Rogers, Alex Smith, C.J. Spillman, Adam Snyder. These are the ones off of that list that I retain if possible

by MikeDv on Dec 9, 2011 9:38 AM PST reply actions

Add in Tukuafu to that list

Keeping Brad Seeley

will be important toward keeping Blake Costanzo. Hopefully no team hires him away to be a head coach.

Brooks and Rogers are the only two I’m worried about. The others, if the team wants them, they’ll get ’em signed.

i would take out Ginn

But good list under than that. Ginn would want 5m-7m a year, and hes not worth anything close to that.

by Giants49war on Dec 9, 2011 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

No way. Ginn got paid to start his career. As did Braylon. They don't need to make big bucks now

I think it’s more important to each guy to win at this point in their career. On their next contract they might be worried about getting paid big but this is their chance for redemption. Ginn is happy here and Braylon seems happy as well. I think we get significant hometown deals on each guy.

Josh Morgan is a different story. He didn’t get 20 Million guaranteed + incentives like Braylon did for being #3 overall or a 5 year 19.6 million with $14 million guaranteed like Ted got and never earned as a WR. At best Ted gets offered a contract equal to his rookie deal and that’s considering he took a pay cut this year and we’re giving the money back to him.

I can't wait to see how well we do next year

With a full training camp, another draft, and who will we will lock up in contracts, who we release, and what free agents we acquire…I wish we had Jim harbaugh and staff 5 years ago… Alex would be bad ass and master of the west coast offense right now.. Given the turn around he has had this year..

I watched the the saints game from last year recently for the hell of it, considering our playoff match ups this year.. Damn man we should of one that game.. If it wasn’t for delanie fumbling in the redone.. A fumble on a kick off.. And a interception that bounced off a defenders helmet.. We would of one that game easily.. I think we can stick it to them at the stick this year..

They had a good draft, Sproles is an improvement over Bush, and Graham is much better than in his rookie year. It’s going to be great to see the 49ers play them, and hopefully it will be in SF.

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Dec 9, 2011 10:21 AM PST reply actions

Would like to keep Snyder

But the 49ers could probably find an adequate replacement for him just like they did when Baas left.

Alex Smith, Rogers, and Brooks should be the number 1 priority.
Number 2 priority should be Braylon, Goldson, and Snyder.
Number 3 priority is Castanzo, Ginn, R Smith, Grant, Morgan,

by GB9er on Dec 9, 2011 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Swap Ginn and Morgan for Snyder.

Snyder is not good guys. He’s not even a good guard. We can draft a 3rd round OT and slot him as a guard and immediately get the same production or better. All but the smallest backup tackles in the league is good enough to be a near starter at guard. Snyder almost washed out of the league at tackle. He wasn’t even good enough to be a backup. He’s not a priority AT ALL.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 10, 2011 6:19 AM PST up reply actions

This

Comparing him to Chilo Rachal has caused him to be way overvalued. Unless he’s giving us the most intimate sweetheart deal of all time retaining him in FA will probably be way too expensive for his level of play.

Must draft another Pass Rusher if don't re-sign Brooks.

and even if 9ers do re-sign Brooks still need to draft another Pass Rusher because we only have 2 players Brooks & A.Smith who are legit Pass Rushers, you need more than just 2 legit Pass Rushers.

by BigMar on Dec 9, 2011 10:34 AM PST reply actions

I'd separate the guys in priority groups:

Very High Priority:
- Alex, Snyder, Rogers.

High Priority:
- Brooks, Goldson, Costanzo, Morgan, either Braylon or Ginn.

Medium Priority:
- The other one of Braylon/Ginn, Grant, Reggie Smtih.

Low priority:
Gooden, Peelle, Tukuafu, Spillman, Rachal, Madieu

Irrelevant:
- Norris, Swain.

I'd put Ginn...

in the High Priority list and move Braylon into the low priority list. Unless Edwards shows some convincing play in the latter part of the season. He’s been hurt, sure. But even when he wasn’t hurt, he didn’t do a whole lot of anything.

Ginn at least has an impact.

I also agree about Chilo being on the irrelevant list. This is the play we get out of him in a contract year???? He either really doesn’t want to be in the NFL or just can’t play ball at this level. Either way, he needs to be gone.

He came back and he hurt his shoulder right away.

Guys had a bad year. I’m betting he signs a 2 year deal for like 2.5 million. Which is perfect. We need a big red zone receiver. That’s his niche. It will be nice when he’s healthy enough to both jump and lift his arms above his head without pain.

Gimme 1 round!

Agree it would be awesome if we got Braylon on the cheap

He is way undervalued because his injuries have kept him from showing his true potential.

Or, it would be awesome if he set yardage records in all three post-season games, became too expensive to re-sign, but we won all of those games.

He'd still take less to be here.

He played with the Browns and got onto a decent team with the Jets… Then the Jets didn’t want him back. He knows he’s on a super bowl contender here he was the first guy to say “We’ve only scratched the surface of what this offense can do.” He WANTS to be here. That’s not how you talk if you wanna get into a contract dispute and you’re gonna threaten to leave. He knows he hasn’t been a big part of the offense but he wants to be. Dude already got paid huge on his rookie deal. Money is not the object for him now.

I think you guys forget how bad Snyder was at tackle.

Dude is not a requirement in the slightest. We can replace him easily through the draft OR free agency. Guard is the easiest position on the field to fill. Maybe not for All-Pro caliber guys… But for a simple starter? Easily.

Quite simply

Chilo should not be in the NFL. There is no position for a guy that isn’t a starting caliber guard and isn’t a practice squad caliber tackle.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 10, 2011 6:26 AM PST up reply actions

If I'm in Baalke's shoes, I resign them all with the following exceptions:

1. Braylon Edwards – disappointing productivity and injury record; replace him with either a free agent acquisition (Dwanne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Legedu Naanee) or mid-round draft prospect (Dwight Jones, Rueben Randle, Tommy Streeter, Jeff Fuller, Juron Criner).
2. Tavares Gooden – hopefully we can do better in the free agent marketplace, move Monte Simmons up from the practice squad, or a late-round draft prospect.
3. Justin Peelle – ready to retire; Nate Byham will be returning from IR and Konrad Reuland can be moved up from the practice squad.
4. Chilo Rachal – we can do better in the free agent market (e.g., Carl Nicks) or a late-round draft choice. One possible alternative would be the resign but then trade him.
5. Moran Norris – we have done much better with Bruce Miller; plus Byham back from IR.
6. Brett Swain – hopefully Morgan, Ginn and Bogan will be back.
7. Madieu Williams – replace with mid- to late-round draft prospect (hopefully George Iloka in the fifth round).

Given the right money I think that most of the guys will want to resign … right of the verge of consistently making playoff money. My guess is that Ginn might be the toughest to sign, followed by Dashon Goldson. I think that we should try to resign both, but not break the bank in doing so.

by goatfather on Dec 9, 2011 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

Thumbs down... just... HUGE thumbs down on everything but 6 and 7

1. Ridiculous. You want us to have to shell out huge salaries for these guys – Bowe and VJ are going to want 40-50 million dollar contracts. We can get Braylon for 1/20th of that. Just poorly thought out
2. A late round prospect isn’t going to understand how to make line calls and adjustments. No rookie does particularly well at center because the mental leap is too big. Maurkice Pouncey made the pro bowl as a rookie but he made it on ignorant Steelers nation fan voting only. He certainly didn’t belong there. He was a mid-1st round pick and he performed in the middle of the pack for NFL centers. A late round pick will be lucky to do more than make the practice squad as a Center
3. None of those guys should be back. We need a 3rd weapon at TE because Delanie is going to get paid and sooner rather than later.
4. Nobody is gonna trade for Chilo. Not even Seattle, who takes our trash out for us, would trade more than a pack of Marshawn fuel (#TasteTheRainbow) for him.
5. Moron – just dump him yes, but Byham should not be back. This is the 1 position we can fill with a late round draft pick. Byham is big and slow and useless to our offense. Soap is a better lead blocker as well.

Goldson will be the hardest to resign. He put up good numbers this year and already made it clear he wants to get paid. Considering how inconsistent he’s been between 2 years ago, last year and this year, I say let him. We don’t need guys that are money hungry setting a poor example when I’m near certain half our guys are going to take less to return to a team they’ve bought into so much. If Goldson gets a better offer and turns it down to see our counter offer and is willing to take less. Pay him and lock him up. If he starts playing hard ball, let him sail.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 10, 2011 6:39 AM PST up reply actions

Hate to say it

But Goldson has probably played himself into a lot of money this season. Hopefully we can keep him without spending too much, and he can control himself a little better, but the man has been quality this season, and way better than expected, considering it looked like he might not be back as recently as August.
