2011 Free Agents That Could Make an Immediate Impact for the 49ers

The main goal for the San Francisco 49ers is to fix their weaknesses and a majority of the problems started on defense. From a coordinator who wasn't aggressive enough to poor tackling. Also, what will be interesting to see is if the 49ers bring back some of their own free agents as well.

Aubrayo Franklin, Ray McDonald, Demetric Evans, Manny Lawson, Takeo Spikes, Dashon Goldson, and Tarell Brown are the free agents the 49ers could lose on defense. On the offensive side the 49ers free agents are Alex Smith and Troy Smith.

For the 49ers the weakness on offense is on the offensive line as Chilo Rachal was manhandled last year and the quarterback position. David Carr currently is the only quarterback under contract for the 49ers and that doesn't bode well for the 49ers.

So, there definitely could be options at free agents for the quarterback position and for offensive line help. Here's a look at free agents on the offensive side that the 49ers could look to go after. I'm excluding running backs, tight ends, kicker, and punter as the 49ers are set at those positions.

Quarterbacks:

Trent Edwards: Could be an interesting option after being released by the Bills signed with the Jaguars to backup David Garrard. Though he has battled injuries in his young career with Jim Harbaugh as the 49ers coach he could be given a shot.

Alex Smith: For whatever reason the 49ers could still bring back Smith, but if the 49ers do make a trade he would likely become the teams backup. If the NBC Sports article is accurate, then Smith may just find his way back to the starting position. Harbaugh has said  "So excited, yeah, I’m going to say it, I’ve been studying Alex Smith and watching him and I believe that Alex Smith can be a winning quarterback in the National Football League."

The article can be found here

Offensive Line

Harvey Dahl has started 43 of 48 games the past three seasons for the Atlanta Falcons

Logan Mankins has started 89 of 96 games for the New England Patriots has made three Pro-Bowls and been an All-Pro. Missed time due to contract dispute this past season.

Davin Joseph missed time with an injury with the Buccaneers this past season, but is their best offensive linemen so may not be easy to pry away. He has made one Pro-Bowl. Has started 68 of 80 games as well.

Carl Nicks has made one Pro-Bowl in his three year career for the New Orleans Saints, has played in every game of his young career. At 6'5" 343 would add size to the offensive line.

Fullbacks:

Le'Ron McClain may want to carry the ball a little more than what teams would like, but proved in 2008 that he can be used as a primary running back even though his primary position is fullback. He ran for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns while making the Pro-Bowl. He doesn't get to touch the ball as often with Ray Rice the primary ball carrier in Baltimore. Being the best fullback available will give him a quite a bit of leverage and he may price himself out of the 49ers league and the 49ers could look to the draft for a fullback. Specifically the Henry Hynoski out of Pittsburgh.

Vonta Leach is the polar opposite of McClain he doesn't need to carry the ball to be effective and he has one Pro-Bowl appearance. He can catch the ball out of the backfield as he has 76 receptions in seven seasons, but he's mostly in the game to be a lead blocker.

 Wide Receiver:

Steve Breaston could come in as a valuable third receiver for the 49ers or even push Josh Morgan for the number two spot. Though it's likely Arizona will try to resign him. He has one season with 1,000 yards and in that season he had a career high 77 receptions, and three touchdowns. Also, he is a valuable return man as well.

Mark Clayton he could be interesting as he was having a tremendous season before ending his season on injured reserve. His best season came in 2006 when he caught 67 passes for 939 yards and five touchdowns. This season before the injury in five games he had 23 catches for 306 yards, and two touchdowns.

Malcolm Floyd came into his own this past season and had some tremendous games. Though he did miss some time with injuries he would be a big target for the 49ers at 6'5" but it's more likely the San Diego Chargers will go after him especially if Vincent Jackson leaves also. This past season he caught 37 passes for 717 yards and six touchdowns.

Vincent Jackson like Mankins held out but he was also suspended for the first four games of the season as well. Like Floyd he's a tall receiver and in just five games he caught 14 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns. He's had two seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving and in 2009 caught nine touchdown passes.

Sidney Rice he came on in 2009, but missed most of this past season due to injury. He appeared in six games catching 17 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. His 2009 season saw him catch 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns.

Steve Smith the ultimate possession receiver of the free agent class of 2011. There's no doubt the New York Giants are going to want to resign him. He did miss some time with injury but in 2009 he caught 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mike Sims-Walker  had a frustrating season for the Jaguars. He was hoping to capitalize on his 2009 success where he caught 63 passes for 869 yards and seven touchdowns. This season he still had seven touchdowns but managed 43 catches for 562 yards.

Defensive Tackle:

Haloti Ngata there's no question if he were to be signed the 49ers defense would improve immediately. The Ravens no doubt will make a play to keep him in Baltimore, so to pry him away a team will have to over spend to get him. For the season he had 47 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He's made two Pro-Bowls and an All-Pro team.

Brandon Mebane maybe the next best thing to Ngata, always under appreciated even while playing at California, Mebane knows how to make plays. His best season came in 2008 when he had 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Aubrayo Franklin: Franklin held out as he wanted a long term contract extension. He was not as effective as he was in 2009, but still had a solid season and posted 38 tackles.

Daniel Muir takes up space inside the past two seasons he has recorded 72 tackles and .5 a sack. Could be an inexpensive replacement for Franklin.

Paul Soliai could definitely make up for the loss of Franklin as he is a space eater at 6'4 345 pounds. Recorded 33 tackles and 2 sacks last year for the Dolphins

Barry Cofield may not attract the attention of a Mebane, Franklin, or Ngata but he's a solid defensive tackle and still is relatively young in 79 games with New York Giants he has 155 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.

Defensive End:

Cullen Jenkins has had an injury history and may price himself out of Green Bay's range when he becomes a free agent. Would immediately up grade the end position for the 49ers as his primary responsibility for the Packers has been to get after the quarterback. Over the past two seasons in 27 games he has recorded 11.5 sacks.

Mathias Kiwanuka like Jenkins, Kiwanuka would be a definitive upgrade at defensive end. Was out most of the season in 2010, but prior to that had been durable as he played all 16 games in 2009 and 2008. In the 35 games that he has played the past three seasons he's recorded 15 sacks, with a career high 8 in 2008.

Jason Babin could be a one year wonder as he is most likely to resign with the Tennessee Titans, but with the departure of Jeff Fisher it could mean he would be willing to play someplace else. 2010 was by far his best season as he recorded 12.5 sacks, 44 tackles, and forced two fumbles.

Cliff Avril is the youngest of the group of defensive ends as he has played three seasons for the Detroit Lions. Played in 13 games last year for the Lions and recorded 8.5 sacks, he'll most likely resign with Lions, but if the 49ers throw enough money at him and with his youth could definitely improve the end position playing next to Justin Smith

Turk McBride another Lion that could be had could take the place of Ray McDonald, he's a bigger defensive end at 6'4" 285, but did record 5 sacks in 2010 for the Lions and forced three fumbles.

Ray McDonald made a few nice plays for the 49ers in 2010, but his inconsistency will more than likely mean he will not be resigned. He did not record a sack last year, but did intercept a pass for a touchdown. In 56 games for the 49ers he recorded 5 sacks, and 3 of those sacks came in 2009. Just not enough production from McDonald to stay on could use a fresh start.

Mark Anderson could also take the place of McDonald if he could regain the form of his rookie year where he recorded 12 sacks, last year he played in 15 games with the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears and recorded 4 sacks. In 77 career games he has recorded 25.5 sacks and has forced 5 fumbles.

Wallace Gilberry produced last season for the Chiefs and recorded 7 sacks, he like Avril is only in his third year and it's likely that he'll stay in Kansas City. Could be another solid candidate to replace McDonald.

Dave Ball like Gilberry recorded 7 sacks but for the Titans again with Fisher gone he could easily take his services elsewhere. He did miss five games last year, but still is relatively young and would add some size at the end position and again could take the place of McDonald.

Linebackers:

LaMarr Woodley could price himself out of Pittsburgh's league and if the York's are serious about getting the 49ers back to the playoffs adding Woodley would be a start especially if the 49ers select Von Miller in the first round as he could be a tremendous influence on Miller and even Manny Lawson also a free agent this year. He's played four seasons and has 39 sacks in 60 games as well as 141 tackles and 7 forced fumbles.

Tamba Hali switched from defensive end to outside linebacker and had a break out season in 2010, didn't do too badly in 2009 either after the switch. In two seasons at the position he has recorded 23 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and has recorded 84 tackles. Also, could be a very good acquisition for the 49ers if Woodley is too expensive.

James Anderson had a breakout season for the Carolina Panthers and could take the place of Takeo Spikes if he's not resigned. He recorded 98 tackles, forced 2 fumbles, had 3.5 sacks, and 1 interception.

D'Qwell Jackson suffered an injury that had him miss 10 games last year with the Browns. The season before that he recorded 95 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 6 passes defended. Could replace Spikes if he is not resigned.

Justin Durant a former second round pick that had a relatively disappointing season. Can play in a 3-4 system and in 2009 recorded 81 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble.

Kevin Burnett another Charger that could be had. Made huge contributions to the Chargers last year with 80 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 interceptions, an interception returned for a touchdown, and 1 forced fumble.

Travis LaBoy: May be resigned by the 49ers his skills as an outside linebacker is to get to the quarterback, last season for the 49ers he had 5 sacks which was one of the higher totals for the team, but he also battled injuries and does not play well against the run.

Manny Lawson the 49ers could use the franchise tag on him as he plays the run extremely well and is a decent pass rusher with his athleticism. The only knock on him is that he doesn't always come up with the sack when he gets into the backfield, if the 49ers are able to sign Woodley or Hali and draft Miller, Lawson either will be pushed to new heights or be used as trade bait. In just over four seasons Lawson has 14.5 sacks and 181 tackles.

Cornerback:

Champ Bailey has made 10 Pro-Bowls at the corner position and with the Broncos struggling the 49ers could pounce and sign him for years. Though he's aged he's still one of the best corners in the NFL, but his injury history may keep the team from signing him. He has played in 31 games the past two seasons though and has 5 interceptions, 1 sack, and 102 tackles.

Nnamdi Asomugha is in the top two corners in the league it was rather shocking to see that the Raiders would actually terminate his contract, but Al Davis did. Now he's free to sign where ever he wants, and he'll still command a lot of money. At 6'3 he possesses excellent size and although his numbers don't seem impressive the past few seasons it's because no team is willing to throw his way.

Brent Grimes has raised his game up for the Falcons and with him being a restricted free agent he may not be worth going after as the Falcons will more than likely match any offer to him. This past season he had 70 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 23 passes defended.

Johnathan Joseph was the Bengals best cornerback and teams did not throw his way much either. He recorded 37 tackles, 3 interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, and had 8 passes defended.

Antonio Cromartie if the New York Jets are looking to sign Asomugha, Cromartie could be left in the dust as there would be no way for the Jets to pay Cromartie. So, the 49ers could jump at the chance to bring in a corner that is physical and is tall at 6'2." The big issue for Cromartie is his mouth, but in 2010 he recorded 41 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 17 passes defended. His best season came in 2007 with the Chargers when he had 39 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 18 passes defended.

Richard Marshall may not get the recognition of the other big name corners, but he is a solid corner and last year for the Panthers he recorded 74 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 8 passes defended.

Eric Wright of the Browns could replace Tarell Brown as a nickel cornerback and on special teams. He's still young at 25 years of age and has plenty of experience. In 59 games he has 9 interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, 2 forced fumbles, and 45 passes defended.

Chris Houston may not cost as much as any other corner on the free agent market. He has started 59 games in his career and has 4 interceptions, 196 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 46 passes defended. Again could be a replacement for Brown.

Jason Allen another interesting free agent played on two teams last year Miami and Houston, yet combined he had 46 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 12 passes defended. Could possibly be on his third team if the 49ers go after him.

Kyle Arrington 2011 will be his third year in the league and he got some valuable experience in his second season with the Patriots he recorded 49 tackles, 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown, and 5 passes defended. Could be the third or fourth corner for the 49ers.

William Gay: another chance to bring in a solid corner and at 25 is young enough to make a big difference in the lineup. The past two seasons Gay has 101 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 21 passes defended.

Safeties:

Roman Harper a play-maker in the secondary the 49ers desperately need and young enough to be worth a multi-year contract. Last season Harper had 72 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 interception, and 6 forced fumbles.

Eric Weddle besides Woodley, Weddle should be the only player the 49ers over spend on. He's an outstanding safety and at 25 years of age he'll be one for a while. The Charges of course will not let him go without a fight. For 2010 he had 79 tackles, .5 sack, 2 interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, and 10 passes defended.

Dawan Landry he is one of the better safeties that is a free agent and is the same age as Harper, he recorded 83 tackles, 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 4 passes defended.

Tanard Jackson he is the same age as Weddle, but last year missed 14 games which may be beneficial for any team looking to sign him as he won't be as expensive. In 2009 he had 59 tackles, 5 interceptions with two being returned for touchdowns, 2 forced fumbles, and 8 passes defended.

Bernard Pollard has great size for a safety at 6'2" and is a big hitter. In 15 games last year had 81 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 passes defended. The only disappointment to his season last year was that he didn't record an interception after interception 4 in 2009.

Gerald Sensabaugh maybe the most inexpensive free agent at safety, came on strong for the Cowboys last year as he had 57 tackles, 5 interceptions, 2 sacks, and 10 passes defended.

Husain Abdullah another inexpensive option who can on strong last season for the Vikings. Recorded 50 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 7 passes defended.

Dashon Goldson according to him struggled through injury last year with the 49ers. Did look better towards the end of last season, but it was nothing to write home about. He constantly gets burned in the passing game, but is good against the run and will make a big hit. In 2010 he had 59 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 5 passes defended. More than likely Goldson will be replaced whether it's having Nate Clements moving into the safety position, drafting a safety in the draft, or the 49ers signing a free agent.

If the Niners land Asomugha,

the D backfield would be hugely upgraded, of course, and 99.99% of the fans would be happier than Al Davis watching the Penn Relays (depending on how much we pay Nnamdi).
Plus, he wouldn’t have to move his (site decorum) very far; just pack up a U-haul and make it over the bridge.

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

asomugha, tamba hali and decent safety would make the defense beastly.

and still the draft to come……

Should note now

The Ravens will franchise Ngata, so he’s off the market. Unless the 49ers decide to make a trade.

really?

They are franchising him?

You Can Never Tell. . .

. . . what will happen to these players when they finally get well coached.

I think the WRs, CBs, and Safeties were not taught as well as they should have been under Single-terror.

by Since79 on Feb 1, 2011 10:41 PM PST reply actions

Yes, Manny was not

That had more to do with Manusky being afraid to blitz. 2010 should have been Lawson stepping up to 10 plus sacks and yet he had 2.5 the entire season.

by Rocky63215 on Feb 2, 2011 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

Lawson had about four sacks slip away from his grasp as the quarterback stepped up in the pocket.

i think we need a better DL really. not Smith, but mostly soap

Nice job Rocky

Looks like you spent a lot of work on it.

One thing, Nnamdi’s contract was voided due to verbiage in it that they thought he could hit, it wasn’t because the Raiders just all the sudden didn’t want him. It was written into his contract when he signed. Since he had no INT’s, no FF’s, and missed some games he didn’t have a “better” statistical year than last year, thus voiding his contract.

My absolute dream FA would be….
Hali, Ngata, Nnamdi. Dream some more and you can throw in Jonathan Joseph and Woodley also.

Some thoughts on the FA list..

First off.. the ones I’d love to have that aren’t going anywhere….

Hali, Woodley, Ngata, Joseph, Rice, Jackson.

I just don’t see their teams letting them go.

Second… the guys that I would love to have but would either want too much money, or too much for their age.

Asomugha, Bailey, Mankins.

The guys that people really like but I wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole..

Cromartie, Marshall.

Cromartie is still living off his fame from his 10 INT season.. but what nobody likes to talk about is how often he got burned going for all those INT’s. He’s an ego hound that will try to pad his stat sheet at the expense of the scoreboard.

Marshall… go to the Panthers forum and see why they want him gone. He gets so many tackles because he can’t cover worth a damn. I’ve even heard some joke that he lets receivers catch the ball just so he can get another tackle. He had a good game when we played them, and that limited view of him is why people here like him…. but he’s not an upgrade over our nickel backs, nor less Clements or Spencer.

So the guys I think we should target…

Eric Wright.. was having a promising young career until a bad game against Pittsburgh where he got torched repeatedly, which is a cardinal sin in Cleveland, and an injury. Could have a good career in front of him as a starter.

Malcolm Floyd.. he’s a big, tall, fast deep threat. He’s not a guy that’s going to get jammed at the line, he’s not going to be intimidated over the middle, and you can just toss it up in the corner of the end zone where only he can get it.

Le’Ron McClain… he’s not just a good blocker, he has the power and speed to be the main workhorse if Gore goes down. He takes the FB spot and adds depth to the RB spot. I remember back in 08 he broke an 80 yarder against Dallas. Decent hands out of the backfield too.

Our guys.

Re-sign Smith if Harbaugh wants him, Lawson, Franklin if he’ll deal reasonably, let him walk if he wants top money, and Goldson to a short term contract until we see what shakes out with the secondary.

by Ougadas on Feb 2, 2011 5:47 AM PST reply actions

full backs can be had way cheaper in the draft.

receiver in free agency are over rated.

Hali, Woodley, Ngata, Joseph, Rice, Jackson if the were guaranteed not to be leaving their team they would have been resigned already.

NO ALEX SMITH

How many times do people have to bring this guy up? Leave it be and forget about him. Nobody wants him back.

Draft Nick Fairley

by REDANDGOLD8 on Feb 2, 2011 9:12 AM PST reply actions

The only real reason Alex Smith keeps coming up is because Harbaugh likes him.

The only way I would want Smith back is if Harbaugh truly believes he can help Smith turn the corner.

I think that Harbaugh can

Smith has the tools to be a winning quarterback. Just need an offensive coordinator who isn’t so predictable.

by Rocky63215 on Feb 2, 2011 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

he needs to grow some balls and stop playing scared and doing too much.

and he also needs to stop throwing 250mph passes on 5 yard touch pass and he needs to throw receivers open and throw to spot on deep passes- he did the latter in the last game to morgan who made no effort to catch the ball so there may be hope.

It isn't impossible

If the Bengals slip to the 4th pick it would cost a 1st and 3rd to trade up.

Asomugha would probably cost about 12m a year. Clements is being paid 15, 9,10, 15 over the next four years. So on average about 12 mil a year. We will have some dead money if we cut Clements but if we structure the contract correctly then it shouldn’t be a problem.

I thought he had some guarantee left in him. But in that case I will try to compile a fair deal for him. It will probably be in the range of 4-5 years between 50-60 mil.

Ok so Revis signed a contract extension of 4 year 46 mil

I’m would give Asomougha a contract of 4 year 50 mil deal. Which would be the starting point for our team. After negotiation should be around 5 years 60 mil. Maybe with $40 mil guaranteed.

You'll rarely ever see a contract guaranteed for both...

If a player gets injured during the course of the contract, guarantees for injury means you still pay him.

Guarantees for skill come in to play when you cut a player for any reason, which could be financial.

The big contracts the player usually wants guarantees for skill.. even when both sides know that the “skill” of the player isn’t going to decrease, because teams usually have to backload such contracts to make it under the cap, and then in the last couple years they either renegotiate or cut the player and pay them nothing of the base salary.

Read Andrew Brandt on NFP… he goes into this kind of stuff quite often.

FWIW

IF Harbaugh likes what he sees with Alex and believes he can be a solid back-up/mentor, then thats one less QB void he would need to fill before the season. Has Alex worn out his welcome in SF? probably, yes. Do we have a better solution right now?( McNabb, Kolb, J.Johnson, Rookie..) not really. We WILL draft a QB this year, no doubt about it. But if we cant acquire a FA, isn’t bringing Alex back better than having 2 rookie QBs+Carr?

Lawson

too much upside to let him walk. After the insightful post someone did about him (don’t remember who, it was recent). I am all kinds of excited about this guy and what he could do in different circumstances.

Avril, I don’t think it would take much money thrown his way to get him out of Detroit, and I the idea of picking up a younger guy who has spent time in the league.

Only way I let Franklin walk is if we somehow manage to draft Fairley (not gonna happen).

Breaston could be a solid pick up if he’s cheap. Always good to have someone else around who can return a kick. And he would most assuredly challenge Morgan.

No on the QBs, and Yes on Nicks, if the Saints are dumb enough to let him go.

Lawson's had four years as a starter to prove his worth

and he’s not done it. Alex Smith had people ready to burn him in effigy after 3.

by smileyman on Feb 3, 2011 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

when allowed to pass rush

Lawson has done it and done it well. That shows a ton of worth. Lawson is a quality player who hasn’t been used right. Smith is an average player who has worn out his welcome. I’d be fine with Smith as a back up, but he needs a new city. He has worn out his welcome in SF.

no he hasn't

he’s too tall to get proper leverage, and until this season didn’t have enough girth to apply proper force.

I could make the same arguments about Smith that you just made about Lawson

Why no intrest?

As much as I read through threads about Qb possibilities, I see no love for Matt Hasslebeck. While Pete Carrol has made a statement saying it will be a top priority in resigning him, I don’t think the seahawks will be reaching in to their pockets to offer him the 2-3 year contract he would like. Leaving him to possibly seek some outside job offers. I think if possible he would be the best veteran QB to teach either a new QB from the 2011 draft or help Alex Smith to transition into the WCO, if we choose to resign him. Plus if we do sign him and Alex or a new QB were to get hurt it’s not like he can’t come in and play. I don’t exactly like the idea of David Carr being our next best option as I’m sure we can all remember the Carolina game during the fourth quarter.

by Ralphy D on Feb 2, 2011 10:14 AM PST reply actions

Hasselbeck wouldn't be horrible

If we have the future QB on the roster to learn. He is a good WC QB and our line is better than Seattle’s so I think he could maybe play a couple more years.

Hasslebeck a 1 Trick Pony

I have a great deal of respect for Matt Hasslebeck. I remember when he joined the league as a young overwhelmed QB for Green Bay to become what he became:a Great QB in the NFL…that being said, i would only add him as a means to nurture Troy Smith and build on him. He already has the mobility, he just needs a vet to instill in him the ability to make “KEY” momentum changing plays on the fly and how to put hot routes to work for him…that was one
of his biggest weaknesses…choosing the hot route and then hangin on to the ball too long…ironically…its one of Hasslebecks strengths.

Does good secondary make good pass rush ? or does good pass rush make good secondary ?

for the 49ers they need good secondary
sign Nnamdi Asomugha draft Prince Amukamara not only would it be a awesome tandem to hear of on game day. theyll pretty much shut down the back field and would make Dashon Goldson better and would allow Taylor Mays to do his thing and imma add Patrick Wilis name just becouse its WIllis, hes a beast. Justin Smith is a Bull give him a chance to the qb Manny Lawson with more time no Qb gonna outrun him

the Oline needs some work maybe when Eric gets his center job back and id like to see Baas take over Chilo at RG
and well Alex Smith is gonna have lots of 49ers fan regret not wanting to have him back and good for him.

id also take steve smith as an upgrade over Josh morgan and have Kyle Wilson used as the slot receiver

An ok pass rush makes

a decent secondary.

A non-existent pass rush makes the 49ers secondary.

A good pass rush makes a good secondary.

A great pass rush makes a great secondary.

In other word it’s the pass rush that makes the secondary.

The secondary on the other hand does not make a pass rush. If teams cannot get to a quarterback then the secondary is going to be bad. If a team can somewhat get a pass rush then the secondary has a chance to make plays. A solid pass rush will allow a secondary to make plays. Finally a great pass rush will give a secondary ample opportunities to make plays.

was just looking at salary numbers.....

ok lets start out by saying i got the team salary from last year of profootballtalk.com and it had us at $125.9m (wouldve been $14m under the cap according to them).

second we have a ton of FA’s and dead money: (not 100% on player salaries but i’ll trust the site unless proven other wise wrong….dont be affraid)

T.smith > $575K
westbrook > $2.5m
goldson > $653K
spikes > $3m
laboy > $1.6m
baas > $1.2m
sims > $2.1m
wragge > $982k
mcdonald > $1.2m
evans > $1.9m
franklin > $7m
lawson > $1.6m
a. smith > $4m
j. hill > $520k
s.hill > $900k
lewis > $2.1M

if my math is right thats about $22m.

not asuming increases in current player salaries that leaves the team around $104m
obviously some of these guys get re-signed but alot could be replaced with rookies.
baas, lawson, goldson if brought back would likely get big raises. franklin, i dont believe is worth last season salary and i can see a smaller deal.

over all though, barring trades the team salary IMO will be right around where it is now or slightly less. that being said, if there is a salary cap and it rises as it often does ($7m i think is the projection) then we would have somewhere between $14 to $25m before rookies contracts. depending what position we pick at #7, we could eat into that alot.
all that being said, we probably have enough money to add bailey or nnamdi by themselves or two pretty good players in free agency if we wanted to

nnamdi would be my pick but if we couldnt land him id want to go after woodley and cromartie depending on who we draft.

You skipped Running backs FA s

As I understand it both Amad Bradshaw and Marion Barber maybe available. If at the right price (either of those could really give us a forceful WC offense….

by DrRick009 on Feb 4, 2011 8:44 AM PST reply actions

I skipped over the running backs

Because the position is pretty much set with Frank Gore and Anthony Dixon. Even with the release of Brian Westbrook, the likelihood of signing Barber or Bradshaw is slim to note. If anything it would be for a veteran back that won’t see much playing time.

by Rocky63215 on Feb 4, 2011 7:09 PM PST up reply actions

FA Running Backs

Don’t see any FA RBs worth paying. I like Gore, a lot, but he is probably not going to get through next season uninjured and will need a strong back-up. And I’m not convinced with Anthony Dixon. He can run OK, not great, but his pass blocking is not good, he’s never really done it. His receiving is very limited, and his speed is poor. I like his enthusiasm, but that doesn’t move the chains. I’d personally love to see a trade for Toby Gerhart, who is a very good pass blocker, has very good hands, and can fill in as an every down back when Gore gets injured or takes a break [leg, hip, etc]. I also like the idea of Locke from Kentucky as a true change of pace back with surprising strength and tremendous speed. He can also back-up as a kick returner on Special Teams.

by Petillius on Feb 5, 2011 1:07 PM PST up reply actions

If we are looking at a RB...

Should we really be looking for a COP guy?

With Gore likely to see half a season every season, and Dixon all we have to back him up… wouldn’t it be smarter to get another 3 down back who can step into a 3 man rotation and keep Gore… our best offensive player… healthy?

champ is 2 years older than nnamdi and will want a ton of money too. still has 3 years until he’s willing to switch to safety according to him. while id gladly take both if we dont land one of teh top corners in the draft.

He’s 29, cornerbacks are not like runningbacks where they just decline significantly when they hit 30.

He’s the best corner in the NFL. Teams rarely throw his way, I’m not sure of the exact number, but I think he was targeted around 30 times total, the 2nd fewest in the league(Asante Samuel).

I'm not picking sides here

But someone has to play Devils Advocate. At the time we signed him, Nate Clements was also considered among the best corners in the league. I’m not saying he was ever in Namdi’s league, but what happens in another year or two when teams start throwing at him more. Will he continue to be great in coverage, or will he end up being a liability much like NC has become. We’re talking about Namdi like he’s young and fresh. He is getting older, and is around the same age NC was when we signed him. We don’t need another bad contract

Getting burned by Clements

doesn’t make going after Namdi a bad move. They are 2 different people. With every acquisition there is a chance at getting burned. I would be ecstatic if Clements would take a pay cut and play second fiddle, but no way he does. At 29, Namdi is not old, and at the end of a 5 year deal will be 34. I say if Clemmy doesn’t want to deal, cut him loose, get this guy and draft a younger guy.

harbaugh needs to draft a CB because its been a long time since we had a good corner and Peterson or Amukamara move clements to safety next to taylor mays and move terell brown the 2nd CB, for QB we can do lots of things here we can get Donovan by trade, Trent edwards my favorite (he went to STANFORD) or get kevin kaulb tradind a 2 pick. for a rusher olb Travis laboy we can resign and start him right away he will be a dominat player next to willis and get cliff avril he is very quick and fits the 3-4 defense.
