Casey Matthews as a potential 49er

Caseymatthews_medium

via imgsrv.955thegame.com

Disclaimer:  I am a huge Clay Matthews fan and would kill to have him in our defense.

The long and short of this post is that I want the 49ers to draft Casey Matthews (no, not in the first round), Ideally in the third, or even second round.  While I know he is not Clay, I think he will continue to improve and think he would be great to have picking up his grandfathers legacy on the Niners and playing alongside Willis inside for years, or possibly moving outside as suggested here at Draft Soup.

I feel that he has a lot of the same knocks that Clay did coming into the draft and that he still has room to get better as far as strength and conditioning and gaining size.  I have seen him in mocks going as early as the second, or as late as the third with speculation that he could move up even higher with good combine numbers.  I am still waiting on those but I think based on his performance at Oregon, leading the Ducks with 73 tackles, but also added 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks, three interceptions and five passes defended.  He runner up for the Butkis award and all Pac-10 in addition to his abilities, intelligence on the field, obvious pedigree, and room for further growth I would be willing to take a bit of a flier or even move up in the middle rounds to grab him.  This would be particularly true if we take a CB in the first and trade for a QB, dont see our QBOTF in the draft.

CHECK OUT THE HIGHLIGHT VIDEO HERE

Anyone else like to weigh in?  I'd be very curious to see if anyone else was interested in putting a Matthews back in Red and Gold, if they think he could grow into a 3-4 pass rusher or play inside etc.  Where would you be willing to take him?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

He has played both ILB and OLB at Oregon.

A majority at ILB, but he could potentially be converted. Although that would be more of a project than anything. They are roughly the same build coming out of college. Casey is a couple inches shorter than Clay, so I am not sure if that’s a plus or a minus coming off the edge. It could work to his advantage in being able to duck under blocks.

I think that if a team wanted him to play outside linebacker, that he could do it. But again, the team that drafts him to do that, better be patient. He has a motor and work ethic just like Clay. Clay put on at least 10 LBS of muscle since entering the NFL. Casey would have to put on about the same, or more.

But ultimately I think he will be playing inside linebacker. Who knows? The Packers could wind up drafting him. That would be a nice duo…brother and brother.

I happen to think that Navorro Bowman is going to be an outright stud in the league. Him and Willis could be the best ILB combo together once Spikes hangs ’em up. I think we will see a lot more of Bowman this year, and like what we see. Just a hunch….

Oregon runs a 4-3 so he wasn't asked to rush much.

As for Bowman I didn’t get to watch the the Cards game so I don’t know how well he did when he played an entire game.

He was the MLB

in regards to the ILB vs OLB question. Though he seemed to spend a good amount of time rushing to have 3 sacks and 8.5 TFL

Chip Kelly has only been there two years.

Mike Bellotti sent Mathews in quite a bit in ’08. He hurried the QB quite a bit.

Oregon actually ran more of 3-4 than a 4-3, but they used both.

Casey was still a middle backer in their system and if they blitzed him it often came from up the middle.

One thing to note is"

Clay redshirted and was in college for 5 years, while Casey played as a true freshman and is 1 and 1/2 years younger than Clay, when Clay declared for the draft.

Already a 3 and 1/2 year starter, Matthews has great instincts and a nack for finding the ball. One thing that he does better than Clay…yes even now, is pass coverage. Maybe it’s a pipe dream to get Casey Matthews on this team, but he will make teams regret not drafting him. Clay Matthews was the 3rd LB taken in the draft two years ago…after seeing how great he is, he would be a top 5 pick…..but that’s hindsight. Casey Matthews will be better than what teams think.

Casey Matthews all the Way!

He would be an awesome addition. I think he could be great. Some people say that just because of his last name people want him. However, he has a lot of the same attributes as Clay. That being he is CRAZY. He has the intensity that a football player needs. I would love to add him to our team.

I think our second would be more valuable for a QB and I think if we don’t trade, we need a QB there. However, if it looks like he will be taken in the 2nd round, then I would be willing to trade up from a 3rd or 4th to get him.

How much exposure/ fan fare would there be if he wasn't related to Clay Matthews?

MY pipe Dream....

1st Rd: Von Miller

2nd Rd: LB Casey Matthews, QB Christian Ponder (trade into this round)

3rd: CB (Ras-I-Dowling or someone falling this far)

4th: FB Owen Marecic

4th: RB Derrick Locke (assuming Westbrook doesn’t return)

5th: CB (high upside guy)

The use?

Von Miller on the field all the time, either rushing from the middle or either side

Casey Matthews to come in occasionally as either an ILB or an OLB (maybe Willis and Bow in the middle, Casy and Von on the edges? SICK!)

CB in the 3rd to replace Clements (who leaves for more money), Spencer, Brown and Adams (a guy I LOVE) fight it out for the other two CB spots.

Correct

Nasty break, but a break nonetheless. He should be good to go by next season. Still wish I had more gametape of him though! He seemed to have amazing technique in the pre-season! (Not talking about results. Pre-season results mean squat. Just mean he used his body well, set up the reciever perfectly, timed his breaks well, etc.)

Casey Matthews might drop to the third round.

But if we are to get Von Miller there is no use for Matthews. I have my doubts on Von Miller the QB Killer but I really like how he plays. Hope he proves me wrong if we draft him. I believe we wont get Ponder but a McElroy or a Devlin. I like them both but Ponder just needs to show me something in the Combine. But if we get Matthews and Miller. For the last two lines as much as anything else. I’d pay a lot to see Willis, Miller, Matthews, Bowman(or TKA) on the field at the same time. If we had that kind of LB corps, Brett Favre wouldn’t have anything to text about after facing us.

at the Brett Favre thing. Some people will hate me for saying this but I think we should let Manny walk. Everyone plays good in their contract year and come back and are complete garbage. But yea That LB core of Bam Bam, Miller, Matthews, and Bowman is a very scary line on paper. But lets see what they do on the field. Oh and I believe if we are going to pick up Mathews and Miller in the first two rounds then we need a CB. There is always Jonathan Joseph in FA. Please get him 49ers

OLB or ILB?

Which would you rather have him be OLB or ILB? He could probably do both. But think about having Bowman and Willis in the middle and then Matthews on the outside along with another. Wouldn’t that be great? Or would people rather give up on Bowman and put Matthews in there if we were to get him.

by flyincow555 on Feb 2, 2011 7:01 PM PST reply actions

I'd love to see Matthews on the niners

but I would prefer to take a CB in round 1, a LB in round two and Matthews in round 3. We can never have too many pass rushing linebackers.

No QB. Lets just pick up someone and wait till next year. Maybe Luck will suck without Harbaugh and fall to us

Matthews is a Beast

I would love to have Matthews on the team (I also think it would be cool if he played in Green Bay). I think he is going to be a monster on any team. I wouldn’t want the niners to reach for him though. The niners have many LB’s on the team and they have many other needs. If he was available in the 3rd I would say jump on him. The first two picks should fill needs now. CB, DE. This all depends of course on the CBA. I would love to have a free agency before the draft. There is a lot of talent in free agency worth going after.

by SoCalNinersFan on Feb 3, 2011 8:48 AM PST reply actions

Look at what happened against Auburn

Casey Matthews as non-existent. He only managed one solo tackle the entire game. He is nowhere near the talent level of Clay. Although, Clay’s stats at USC don’t show that, he is bigger and stronger.

Clay 6’3" 240, Casey 6’1" 230! Take your pick?

But, let’s not get wrapped into comparing the two because it just doesn’t work because Clay played on a much better defensive team when he was with USC.

Compare Casey to another linebacker who played in a 3-4 at California. His name, Mike Mohamed. Both played in all four seasons at their respective schools and both played the inside linebacker/middle linebacker position.

Also, it’s worth noting that Mohamed wasn’t even starter for one of the seasons where he put up big numbers.

Looking at Matthews:

His freshman year he had 18 tackles and 1 sack
Sophomore year: 66 tackles and 2 sacks
Junior year: 72 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 interception
Senior season: 73 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions and 1 forced fumble

Career Totals: 229 tackles, 9 sacks, 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble.

Mohamed who is 6’3 240 on the other hand posted these numbers:
Freshman year: 46 tackles
Sophomore year: 87 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions with 1 returned for a touchdown.
Junior year: 105 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions and 1 forced fumble
Senior Season: 91 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown, and 1 forced fumble.

Career totals: 329 tackles, 7 sacks, 7 interceptions with 2 returned for touchdowns, and 2 forced fumbles.

Mohamed had more tackles, more interceptions, more forced fumbles, and more touchdowns. The only category that Matthews defeated Mohamed on was sacks.

it’s understandable why 49ers fans would want Matthews based on his families pedigree, but Mohamed would make the better player for the 49ers. As he is bigger, faster, and stronger.

by Rocky63215 on Feb 4, 2011 7:00 PM PST reply actions

Also note the Cal players that they have past up as of late

Who the 49ers certainly wish they had made the decision to take. I’m not saying Matthews is a bad player, but I think that the 49ers need to look for a replacement for Spikes for not this year, but next and Mohamed would be a tremendous fit and would be better suited because of his knowledge of a 3-4 system and he is an excellent tackler.

This defense would look good Miller, Willis, Mohamed, and Lawson.

why do that

we have bowman an mckillop waitin an wanna playin time i juz cant see wastein another pick on a mlb even a 4th or 5th rd pick can be use 4 something alot better of a need … og john moffitt , wr deandre brown ,qb a.dalton or qb pat devlin

by MRSUGA on Feb 4, 2011 9:57 PM PST reply actions

Don't think McKillop is going to be anything more than

a special teams player. That’s why you go after one in the later rounds to see if they can push Mckillup or overtake him.

by Rocky63215 on Feb 7, 2011 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

just not sold

we need cb qb rb fbdt an de not other mlb log jam ….

by MRSUGA on Feb 7, 2011 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

In the later rounds

You go for the most talented player so if Mohamed is still there in the sixth round you take him.

I’d say the 49ers could do well if their first five picks are Miller, Davon House or Jimmy Smith, Tyler Sash, Ian Williams/Lawrence Guy, and Colin Kaepernick.

There’s your OLB, CB, S, DT, and QB.

The 49ers have two selections in the sixth round that could be used on a FB like Henry Hynoski and Mohamed an ILB.

7th round can be used for either another safety such as Dom DeCicco or a speedster like Jock Sanders.

Defensive end is going to be found outside of the draft as in as a free agent signing.

If the 49ers somehow let Manny Lawson go I could see the 49ers drafting Miller and Bruce Carter.
