Super Bowl XLV Prediction Games Results: 49erLou Champion

Congrats to 49erLou for winning our Prediction Championship.  Much like the Packers 49erLou was only in the mix late in season before going on tear that wouldn't end until crowned champion.  I'm not sure who the past winners are but Niners Nation will have to scribe your name down somewhere to eternalize you forever.  Hats off to the other finalist who made this a nail bitter: leaping_larry, illini49er and wjackalope who braved picking the underdog Pittsburgh.  Of course thanks to everyone who participated in the game throughout the season, it makes this such a special contest on our blog.

Our BIT winner is jtoj slightly edging 49erLou from a Double Rainbow Championship.  jtoj needed every last point to fight off 49erLou for the best playoff predictor.  We won't be scribing your name on the website but I'm sure someone can dig up a kitten gif involving a trophy for ya.  Congrats to jtoj who was best known for patrolling the prediction contest bullying those who picked against the 49ers, now add the BIT title to your mantle. Thanks all for the big jump in participation for the Super Bowl!

Not much to write about after this ... just going to post the scores and roll the credits.  Thanks for a great season. 2011 Go 49ers!  I like Harbaugh's offense matching up against all the 3-4 defenses in the league.

Scoring Explained

Your prediction has these same three components as the actual game score.

1) If you predict the correct winner for an individual game, we will score your prediction against the actual game. If you predict the incorrect winner for an individual game, your prediction will not be scored.

2) Ideally, you will predict the exact point differential of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 45. If you predict a score with a PD of 45, the difference between your predicted PD and the actual PD is 0 (45 - 45 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.

3) Ideally, you will predict the exact point total of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 65. If you predict a score with a PT of 65, the difference between your predicted PT and the actual PT is 0 (65 - 65 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.

So, assuming that you predict the correct winner of the individual game, we simply add the difference between your predicted and the actual PD to the difference between your predicted and the actual PT. The closer this total is to zero, the better your prediction is. A zero exactly will always be a perfect prediction.

pPD = Predicted Point Differential
aPD = Actual Point Differential
pPT = Predicted Point Total
aPT = Actual Point Total
x = Subscore

|pPD - aPD| + |pPT - aPT| = x

That total becomes your subscore for each individual game. These subscores are then ranked, and the five best (including ALL ties) are awarded points. Perfect predictions are awarded 10 points. If the highest subscore for a particular game is not a perfect prediction, it is awarded 5 points. Points then follow in descending order, so that all of the second best predictions get 4 points, the third best all get 3 points, and so on.

woohoo!

I’m so excited! Today has been a good day, first my Tar Heels laid the smack down on FSU, then the Steelers lose and now I am immortalized in the annals of Niner Nation history! I will cherish this victory forever and I’m really gonna work my butt off this off season so I can come back next season and be the first to ever win back to back Niners Nation Prediction Contests! Big thanks to bignerd for an outstanding job doing this thing, it was fun as usual. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ARGGHHHHHHH!!!

If my season was an NFL team, I would have to be the Jaguars.

I was near the top for quite a while, and had a nice lead going into the last couple games of the season. But, like the Jags, I just bombed the last couple regular season games and the playoffs.

I'd be the Vikings

Not so great start but enough early wins to think its possible I could climb back only to suffer a complete collapse.

Chargers

I started off bad but recovered pretty well and climbed the ranks to the top. I squeezed a win out in the first round of the playoffs and then choked.

Probably the Buccaneers,

fairly average week-to-week, with a few good weeks and some bad weeks, finishing on the cusp of the Playoffs, but kept out do to others being better. Still pretty young, there’s room to improve and perhaps sneak into the post-season next year. Good luck chumps, I will be mastering the art of typing 24-17 and 17-23 this off-season and will be a prime candidate to win the trophy and eternal fame next year. [Future Winner Face]

Also, thank you bignerd, it was really fun participating in the prediction contest, and was all made possible by your hard work. My one recommendation for improvement would be to award jbrown63 double points in all future prediction contests. Or not, I don’t know, sleep on it or whatever. Seems like a great idea, but I understand if you don’t want to mix things up, you know, it’s just a thought.

Really though, thanks. [Thankful Face]

Same here!

I still really don’t understand the scoring system. I’d practically nail the score and yet get no points. Lamesauce. :)

Congrats to the winners!

(Re the conflicting Harbaugh reports:) If you were to pass Harbaugh's $50,000 bathroom this week, you'd hear raucous laghter. The source? The man himself laughing his face off as he fires off "anonymous" tweets and texts from "sources" to the prominent beat writers and media folk.

by Riding The F Train on Feb 7, 2011 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

It's pretty easy to understand:

First you have to get the winner right.
pPD = Predicted Point Differential(EX: The difference in your prediction. You predict the score to be 27-14. Then it would be 13.)
aPD = Actual Point Differential(EX: The actual difference in the game. Real score 17-6, then it would be 11.)
pPT = Predicted Point Total(EX: The total points scored in your prediction. You predict the game to be 27-14. Then it would be 41.)
aPT = Actual Point Total(EX: The actual total of the game. Real score 17-6, then it would be 23.)
x = Subscore

pPD – aPD + pPT – aPT = x

(13-11) + (41-23) = x
2 + 18 = 20

But what I don't understand is

How do you calculate it when the score is -? Like say you predict it to be a diff of 8 and it’s actually 11. that’s -3? are you disqualified or do you just add it with the other number? Or what about when BOTH are – numbers?

by mikeinsp on Feb 7, 2011 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

You're just missing the absolute value signs in your equation.

It’s |pPD – aPD| + |pPT – aPT| = x, thus, x is always positive or zero. You may notice that x is also always even, though that is perhaps a bit less apparent.
