2011 NFL Draft Compensatory Picks: 49ers Awarded Two Seventh Round Picks
The NFL announced 2011 NFL Draft compensatory picks and the San Francisco 49ers received two seventh round picks. They will receive the 38th and 49th (fitting) picks of the seventh round, which equate to 238 and 249 overall. The 49ers were compensated because of their "losses" of free agents Arnaz Battle and Tony Pashos. They signed David Carr, but it was not enough to offset the pair of "losses." Given the players involved I feel it's important to put the quotation marks around losses.
Per the NFL, compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
Just for entertainment value, the 49ers have actually had the 238th and 249th picks at some point in franchise history. In 1995 the 49ers used the 238th overall pick to select Herb Coleman out of Trinity in Texas. He had no position listed, which might be one reason he didn't last long. The 49ers have had the 249th pick three separate times. In 1978 they selected Steve McDaniels out of Notre Dame (no position listed). In 1979 they selected wide receiver Dwight Clark out of Clemson. That pick worked out OK. In 2005 they selected tight end Billy Bajema out of Oklahoma State. That pick also worked out fairly well for the team as he was a decent blocking tight end.
I've posted all this year's compensatory picks after the jump.

losses
They lost A.J. Feeley and Julius Peppers. I’d guess Peppers is the highest pick

Since we won't be able to sign undrafted rookies after the draft....
And since the undrafted rookies have a choice where they go (Blount). The extra 2 7th round picks are OH so important in locking down 2 guys that the wouldn’t be able to get other wise.
Love that conversation in the NFL offices ...
NFL man No 1 (with cigar in hand): “OK, Hank, what about the 49ers?”
NFL man No 2 (whisky in hand, reclining in Georgian leather chair): “The 49ers? What about them?”
NFL man 1: “Well, how many compensatory picks should they have?”
NFL man 2: “Well, how many players did they lose against their will, George?”
George: “A couple – the lineman, Pashos, and the receiver, Battle.”
Hank: Never heard of either of ‘em."
G: “Me neither.”
H: “Tell you what … they lost two, give ’em two.”
G :“Well, there is one thing ..”
H: “Yes, George, what is it?”
G: “David Carr.”
(Cue laughter from lots of nervous accolytes standing around in lounge suits)
H:“Ha ha ha ha, who? Say it again, George!”
G: “Er, sir, they did sign David Carr … the, the, the quarterback, sir?”
(More laughing from men)
Hank: "Ha, oh dear, ha ha, oh … OK, here’s the deal, George. They lost two, so that’s two picks back, and they gained David Carr so that’s, well let me see … still two picks!"

And if they considered...
that we were forced to have Alex on the roster for 6 years, maybe they should have given us a couple extra 1st rounders in compensation ? :)
What's funny is you'll change your name after Alex has a good season either here under a decent staff
or elsewhere
Gimme 1 round!

A league high 12 picks with a new administration coming in
Thats awesome. The sign of a good to great Front Office is their ability to find gems later in the draft. Hopefully Baalke & Co. can find good prospects to bring in. 2 Fours, 2 Sixes & 4 Sevens are a good way to start
He already found Dixon, Byham, and Williams in the sixth round last year.
I am excited about all three of those guys.

Exactly
You dont have to find Superstars with those picks just players who have talent but either need to be developed, are from Smaller schools or have off the field issues. Think about our secondary needs outside of a Shutdown Corner & QB. We need to find Pass Rushers, a Change of Pace Back, a WCO FB, More Corner Depth & A WCO WR. All of them can be in rounds 4-7. You just have to know what kind of players fit that mold
I'd suggest they trade a few away for next season
It’s got more to do with the coaching staff inexperience than any thoughts on a draft class. Lets face it, most of the coaches are new to the NFL landscape. Some of their theories and plans are going to be wrong/fail and need adjustment. I’d rather they test and try their philosophies this season and have the ammo to retool next season with some perspective.
Ya, lets not kid ourselves
The top brass of the coaching staff has been the college game the last few years.
Also, they don't know their own players as well as they should, or who will be back next season due to not having a CBA.
Next year there will be a lot less uncertainty in how they want to build the team.

Can't trade away comp pick's , just a FYI if you didn't know ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's just my game ...Jimmy Raye your no daisy ...!!
I’ve been reminded before but I forgot. They can use the 7th round picks. My advice is try to move some other picks to next years draft. Belichick always seems to do it.
is there a draft next year?
that is the question
lol
maybe san diego wants to trade again

That is ...
10 tradable picks. Baalke has the ammo to trade up into the 1st round if he sees the QB they want sitting there !
True but I still contend that only 2 QB's will be taken in the 1st. I mean unless anyone falls in love with Locker or Mallet
And while there may be 10 or so teams that need a QB, 8 of those teams will wait till the 2nd or 3rd Round to pick one up
I agree that 2 will definately go first round,
However most teams needing a QB bad will be picking before the 49ers in the 2nd round, meaning that the most likely trade up would happen on day 2. In Harbaugh we trust and if he reaches I hope he is right…
Maiocco's most recent mock
Has 4 QB’s going in the first round and I tend to agree with him.
Newton to Carolina, Gabbert to Cincy, Locker to Minny @12 and Ponder to the Seachickens @25.
I have always argued that the Seahawks wouldnt pick a QB
They want Hasselback back as their starting QB and from all accounts they really like Whitehurst and plus they traded a 2nd round pick to the Chargers for him last year. Me I have Gabbert to Carolina & Newton to The Bills. But he does have a point about Locker to Minnesota but fact is that their new OC Bill Musgrave is a WCO guy might not be the right fit for Locker
You might be right
But if Ponder is rising and they like him it could happen.
He also had 5 CB’s going in the first round.
I see 5 Corners going in the first more than I see 5 QB's going
The 1st round is going to go heavy on defensive players. D-Linemen & Corners will dominate the 1st round. 3 or 4 OLB will probably go too. I only see 4 skill players going in the 1st & a couple of a QB’s
I keep hearing 4 QB's too
Newton and Gabbert in the Top 10, Locker in the teens and someone else trading up to get another QB late in the 1st round.
mallett is probably going to go in the first and sealte is probably the team interested in kolb

Wish they could have been a higher round!
Do they ever do a 1st round comp pick? That would be sweet. They should see how this CBA fiasco is affecting the teams and comp them by the ones that are getting the shorter end of the goalpost.

You can only get a higher “compensatory” pick if a team has a tendered RFA who signs an offer sheet with another team and his original team chooses to not match the offer.

“Compensatory picks were positioned between the third and seventh rounds of the draft, and are based on the value of the free agents lost the previous year through a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason awards. The formula was devised by the NFL Management Council, and not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by the formula” Per ESPN
lol
The 49ers were compensated because of their “losses” of free agents Arnaz Battle and Tony Pashos.
