Are you going to say anything?
I see a couple names in there though that I wouldn’t mind having for a second.

you have to be picked number one in the draft to be given 6 years to develope
if you picked in the second round and do not produce, usually you are kicked to the curb and will always be a back-up qb.

Hello
Just joined ninersnation and thought id try a fanpost. I was inspired by the “Which great quarterback outside of the first round this year will be the greatest?” debate i’ve seen a lot of lately. Colin K, McElroy, Ponder, Devlin, TJ Yates, Dalton, Stanzi. I know first round qb’s can be a crapshoot but it’s even harder to find a starting qb in the later rounds.
by maddenninerinmo on Mar 27, 2011 1:09 PM PDT reply actions
No. I haven’t seen him saying he’s only looking at qb’s outside the first round. Personally. I think he’d take Gabbert if he was there at #7, but AZ is probably the farthest he’ll fall. So we’ll likely end up taking someone in the second or third round. I’m just saying that of the five or so second tier qb’s, odds are only one, if that, will be a solid starter. Hopefully Harbaugh knows which one and that guy is available when we pick.

I would really like to see, how many games; 1st round qbs are given a chance to start and be the man vs. how many 2nd round qbs are given a chance to start and be the man.
so often qbs are not given time to develop into a franchise qb.
many of the recently drafted qbs are given a chance to improve and gradually do improve.
second round qbs tend to be benched more often and not be talked to consitantly as the man or the franchise qb.
colt mccoy had a pretty good year last year with a not so good offense, yet i read a article yesterday that he still might not be the starter
panthers would definitely be not be thinking as hard about drafting a qb in the first round this year if they used their first round pick last year on qb.
chad henne been given a decent shot, he has above 60% completion but throws more picks than tds. take away three games for him last year and his has almost 50% more tds than picks
josh freeman struggled in his first year badly and did better his second year. do not think he was or has been questioned about him not being the qb of the future
mark sanchez still has low completion percentage at 55% and almost even in td vs. picks his second year and he is not being questioned as not being the qb of the future.
my opinion is that it is not really where the guy is drafted but how much effort and the coaching that will determine if the qb is going to be good. almost no qb is going to have a rookie year like bradford, even number one picks or other first round picks do not: stratford, freeman, sanchez eli manning, steve young, michael vick, mcnabb
qbs need to be given time, and having the spent a first round pick and teams not wanting to look like they have drafted a bust makes them stick with their first round pick. second round or later qbs can be just as good if not better. they just need to be given proper chance to develop. 2-3 years. and on the other hand, some first round picks are given too much time and too many chances to be the starter example in jamarcus russell. if he was a second round pick falling asleep in meetings, leaving meetings, coming in at 300lbs he would have been cut his first year
also add
if you look at some of the best qbs in the game, they even show improvement in their td to ints ratio and significant improvement in their completion %
brees, brady, schaub, both mannings except eli had a bad year last year,

First off welcome to the best site on SB Nation.
2nd I hear that too. Its just a thing that people expect fanposts to have a little bit of the writer’s opinion. So just go more in depth on this topic and this will be golden.

Agree on McCoy
don’t on Kolb. I don’t see what makes him so special. Methinks Andyreid is going to laugh his arse off when he gets a high draft pick for him, much like AJ feeley.

chad henne, has a good completion percentage just needs to improve on his td to pick ratio.
clausen may yet be good if he gets a good target to throw to. josh freeman had a horrible first year and bounced back with a qb rating of 95 his second year. will clausen be given that chance?
mccoy for sure looks like he has what it takes.
and two seventh rounders
matt flynn looks like he has what it takes also. and can not forget matt cassell

brees kolb and shaub
are the only ones that have had sucess. that is not a good turnout for 2nd rounders

Kolb?
7 games, 7 touchdowns, 7 interceptions?
Wildly inconsistent against even poor pass defenses?
ESPN / Andy Reid hype does not count as success.

He sure lit us up last year
There is a reason they traded McNabb and Kolb started over Vick. If he wouldn’t have got injured Vick would have stayed on the bench. I don’t think he is as good as some think, but I think he can be a good QB. He isn’t worth a 1st or 2nd round pick. I’d give a third for him.
Well everyone lit us up.
Even Carolina

So if you think he’s worth a 3rd then he was hardly a steal in the second

a lot of hype
but looking at what kolb did in 2009 , i think shows that he has the ability to lead a play-off caliber team. 2010 was all about vick, and that’s a tough break for the guy. look at what steve young did in 88, and i think that’s comparable. i put him on my list bc i think reid knows a lot about qb’s, and to trade mcnabb says kolb has value.
to keep vick doesn’t say anything negative about kolb, it’s just vick is one of those special players.
Kolb
However, when looking at Kolb’s numbers, it’s important to judge them fairly. There have been six games in the past two seasons where Kolb has had a week of practice to prepare as the starter. He did so against the Chiefs and Saints in 2009.
And he did so against Green Bay, the 49ers, the Falcons and the Titans last season. I’m not counting the Cowboys game when he was surrounded by backups.
In those games, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,552 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions for a QB rating of 89.76.
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News
Personally, I like the look of those numbers. Kolb has at least shown some kind of success at the NFL level when given a chance to prepare with the starters. That’s more than what can be said for any of the incoming rookies. While I wouldn’t offer the Niners’ first round pick for Kolb, I’d definitely offer their 2nd rounder.

You realize Alex's numbers are better right?
And on an incompetent team
Gimme 1 round!

What numbers are you talking about?
Better than “complet[ing] 64 percent of his passes for 1,552 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions for a QB rating of 89.76” in six games? Because that simply isn’t true. I’m curious what “numbers” are you comparing?
by I'm your PTBNL on Mar 28, 2011 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions
If you..
“Judge them fairly”
By throwing out the bad games and only looking at the ones he played well in.
Alex's whole career he's been surrounded by backups
Last year he had a back-up coaching staff and a “look out!” offensive line
Gimme 1 round!

Are you choosing to ignore the point
or do you just not get it? It’s not cherry picking data, it’s looking at what data is actually applicable and what is not. What should carry more weight, the games that Kolb had a week to practice with the starters to prepare or games where Kolb was called in for relief duty? If I’m looking for a starting QB I don’t really care how that QB plays coming off the bench because my starting QB should always have a week to prepare with the starters.
by I'm your PTBNL on Mar 29, 2011 7:06 AM PDT up reply actions
No I get it.
And I’ve watched Kolb.
He reminds me alot of AJ Feely. No wait.. maybe Koy Detmer.
Other Eagles backups in Andy Reid’s pass happy system who’ve had short runs of success and then went nowhere.
If he was as good as Reid says he is Reid wouldn’t want to lose him, given the way Vick runs and gets hurt.
And neither of those guys did anything for the teams that drafted them.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

No option for 1?
Brees is the only one on there that can be considered a steal, and even that could be questionable if he wasn’t playing for Sean Peyton. Shaub is a good QB and puts up pro bowl numbers, but he’s not exactly gonna make the HoF, so he’s not exactly a “steal.”
What is a steal then?
I’d consider a steal someone who vastly out performs their draft position. Brees should be a no-brainer with or without Peyton. Schaub too, for the simple fact that not many 3rd round QBs have performed as well as he has. I guess it really comes down to is this, given what we know today would you not jump all over the opportunity to draft Schaub with your 3rd round pick? If you answered yes then by most accounts he’d be a steal.
by I'm your PTBNL on Mar 28, 2011 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions
why isn't shaub going to make the HOF?
Really can’t know that now. If he has another three 4000+ yard seasons he’ll be in there. I’d say he has a shot and was clearly a steal for the 3d round. I wish our #1 draft pick put up 4000 yards a season.
