Filling In the Margins: Which Minor Moves Would You Like to See the Niners Make?
Fooch's Note: I thought this was a solid FanPost with a good discussion topic, so I've moved it to the front page. David Carr might end up getting cut in camp, but the CBA question marks leave him as the only quarterback on the roster, so who knows. In terms of filling the margins, special teams is an area that could use some improvement. CJ Spillman had a solid 2010 campaign, but some more specialists could really help.
I'd like to think NN readers are a bit more of an obsessive bunch than typical Niner fans. That's a compliment. Any casual follower of any team can call a talk radio station and demand that Star X be brought in, that Player Y should be cut (even though cutting Player Y would do more harm than good), etc. Generally speaking, those are not the people who concern themselves with players 35-53 on their team's roster.
We are.
With that in mind, I'm curious to see what the community thinks the Niners should do in terms of "filling in the margins" - i.e., which players you'd like to see brought in for depth/competition purposes. To be clear, I'm not talking about Pro Bowler-types. (It's fun to put Nnamdi Asomuagh on a wish list, but we're probably not going to get him. Who do you think we can get?)
We often hear that the Niners are the most talented team in the NFC West, save for a couple of spots. That doesn't mean that the rest of the roster can't be upgraded, however: it just means that those spots will probably be upgraded through small moves, such as the ones suggested here.
Each suggested move should be paired with a counter-move; who from the current roster should be replaced by the new player?
I'll give an example below, then turn the rest over to the commenters.
Bring In: QB Bruce Gradkowski
Replace: QB David Carr
(In this situation, let's say the Niners get two other new QBs, including a starter, through some combination of draft/signing/trade.)
I don't hate David Carr. I just don't see why we'd need him. He doesn't have an incumbency advantage: these coaches weren't here last year, so he'll be learning the offense from scratch like the rest of his teammates. Unless Harbaugh sees something in him, why keep him around?
However, if you drop Carr, you need a new backup QB. Bruce Gradkowski's an unrestricted free agent, having recently been non-tendered by the Oakland Raiders. He's shown flashes, along with a propensity for injury, since joining the league. He doesn't have a great career won-loss record, but those guys usually don't come cheap anyway (and remember, we're looking for minor moves). He is capable of starting. He won't be in the upper half of the league, but he'll probably keep your team in the game. And while Gradkowski's not ego-free, he proved that he's willing to shuffle between a starting role and a backup spot without complaint during his time with the Raiders. It's never a bad idea to bring in a guy like that: someone capable of competing for a starting job without threatening to be a pain if he's relegated to a backup role.
That's my suggestion. What's yours?

Do you mean
Release Carr and sign Gradkowski? I think Carr is fine sitting on the bench, since his contract is for another year if I recall correctly. But If Gradlowski comes in, would he or Carr fight for the starting qb position while a rookie is groomed?
Bring in Gradkowski and Cut Carr.
Why even pay him another however many million when we already know what he can and can’t do. Can throw interceptions and make nice plays in the preseason.
Can’t win games that matter.

Gradkowski would be a welcome change
He has some experience and could start right away. While Harbaugh grooms our next QB. Palmer would be nice for a year or two, if they really cut him.

Bring In:
a pile of garbage found near the interstate
Replace:
Moran Norris
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
and his name became Moron Norris
when he turned around at the goal line with a defender 2 feet behind him instead of running into the 15 yards of empty endzone directly in front of him.

Hard tell with a new coaching staff
Have no idea what the emphasis will be on either offense or defense. They say WCO and 3-4 defense but their is a lot of room for interpretation there.
Backup QB should at least be a target. I like Billy Volek. He’s at least a candidate for a bridge starter if not a solid veteran backup.
Fullback is another position that can be filled. I’m not going to pretend to know any of these guys names but seems every team has a few a guys on the fringe each camp. Invite a couple of these guys and let the best man win.
Not sure what the 49es are looking for at WR but a free agent signing could help? Who, I dunno, not sure if they would want to go speed, size, shiftiness or veteran presence?
On defense the only position it seems likely to find reasonable help is a nickel CB. Like every season their should be a couple veteran corners available for a one to two year stint. Again, I haven’t looked at the list of available names and have no idea what coverage scheme the 49ers are likely to employ.
Speaking of FB
I actually liked that guy we had in camp last year. I thought he had the ability to do a lot. Big dude with decent speed, could carry the ball and block well. I believe he was a RB at Mich St?

Potential upgrades ...
Quarterbacks:
The Niners will pay three QBs this year — a starter, a QBOTF (from the draft), and Carr. Why Carr? Because we signed him to a 2-year contract and you’re going to pay him anyway (if some portion or all of his contrract in guaranteed). No QB in this draft will be ready to start right away. The most likely outcome IMO is: Alex Smith (starter after resigning for 1-2 years), Christian Ponder (QBOTF), and Carr. I would then expect the Niners to draft yet another QB in 2012 who would replace Carr and compete with Ponder as the future starter. Then, Alex becomes the backup or goes away.
Fullback:
Norris is gone. Replaced with either Owen Marecic or Charles Clay in the draft.
Other positions on offense:
Added help in the draft (e.g., RB, WR, maybe C/OG) but no free agent or trade replacements.
Nose Tackle:
AF likely gone; RJF adequae backup but not starter quality IMO; near-term starter via draft; no viable and/or affordable free agents or trades available.
Left Defensive End:
Would love to get a free agent — Ray Edwards from the Vikings, but very unlikely to happen; Soap will continue to start; hopefully an addition in the draft.
Outside Linebacker:
Hope to resign Lawson, but we may lose him and Laboy. Will draft a near-term starter this year (possibly Brooks Reed from Arizona); remaining playing time allocated to Brooks, Haralson and Gibson.
Cornerback:
Major changes coming through the draft and possibly via free agency — if the Niners were to get only one (affordable) free agent, I would hope for it to be Jonathan Joseph from Cincinnati; at least one, maybe two, new starters by mid-season; strong chance that T. Brown will be gone.
In summary, My hope is that we resign most of our own free agents (at least Smith, McDonald, Lawson, Spikes and Goldson); probably can’t afford to resign AF. Don’t see making any trades, most certainly NOT for Kevin Kolb; maybe Palmer if the price is VERY reasonable. Free agents? Is there anyone who woluldn’t like to have Nnamdi? Sure we would, but he’s just too costly; I like Jon Joseph almost as well and for a far more reasonable price … go get him, Trent!

I pretty much agree with your take 49erFan,
I only wish we could replace Carr with Gradkowski, Carr was an embarrasment last year. Grad is not the long term answer, but he would be a fiery competitor for whoever ends up starting and a huge upgrade from last year.
Carr was totally misused last year also.. he wasn't ready.. and the coaching staff couldn't even spell QB let alone coach one
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
QB and LDE
Alex Smith cannot comeback to this team. We’ve seen him try to pick up an offense in his 1st year 5 times now, the guy is an established failure. As I’ve mentioned recently, I rather see Troy Smith on the field, because both Smith’s will have the same end result(a loss in the record column). Bruce Grad sounds like a tremendous upgrade over both if the 49ers can get him.
Ray Edwards doesn’t NOT fit the 3-4 scheme at LDE. He isn’t nearly big enough to play the position.
1.QB Ryan Mallett 2.CB Jalil Brown 3.CB Kendric Burney 4. G Ben Ijalana 4.NT Kendrick Ellis 5.S Tyler Sash 6.WR Lester Jean 6.RB Chad Spann 7.OLB Jamari Lattimore 7.Kicker 7.CB Richard Sherman
Ponder is not a QBOTF...
If we’re gonna go after a QB then we either need to get a high ceiling project, (Locker or Kaepernick), rather early on. OR, we put off QB until rd 5 or 6 and get a guy who’s ceiling in a WC style offense is just as high as Ponder’s in McElroy.
Drafting Ponder would be a deliriously stupid waste of a pick. Guy doesn’t have the talent to be a top 25 caliber quarterback.
If we draft McElroy as a project then next year we can spend a first rounder on a QB that actually has 1st round talent in Barkley, Luck (if he has a bad year and gets leapfrogged) or Landry Jones. All 3 of those guys are not just better, but SIGNIFICANTLY better than the best QB in this draft right now currently is.

Ponder is already 23. Alex is 26. You’re not looking at a vast experience dearth. Ponder isn’t going to suddenly just flip a switch. He’s David Carr 2.0

Does anyone have stats on Issac Soapaga on how he compares to other LDE in a 3-4 offense?
I know he is not a sack leader, but his run defense.
Anyone have stats they can post?

just a minor move.
Stock pile on all kinds of draft picks on tnis years draft by trading higher draft picks. so next year youll still have players so when next years draft comes, u can do a Mike Ditka and trade all your draft picks to whoever has the number 1 overalll pick if not us (HA) to get ourself Andrew Luck.
" oh crap its Jim "- Pete Carroll
A lot of these things mentioned aren’t minor moves .. replacing the DE? The NT? Both are starters who did well in 2010, it’s not minor.
Minor for me …
Bring in Darren Sproles as a backup running back and kick returner. Have him compete with Ted Ginn. Let Brian Westbrook walk.
Get Ray McDonald under contract and give him more snaps, around five more a game.
I’ll think of some more later, but great interest needs to be taken in the special teams units. C.J. Spillman has become “the guy,” but we need at least one more of him, and we need a guy to be the general on return units. We need a Michael Robinson, to stand right in front of Ted Ginn and lead the charge.

Addressing kickoffs would be special, as well. I’d love to see if Sccacia can handle kickoff duties, I am 100% OK with having a spot on the roster for a kickoff specialist.

Scaccia is the guy that allegedly kicked the 68 yard field goal or something. I’m not buying into that hype, but I am buying into his record in the UFL and things of that nature. He’s got a strong leg and most of his missed are 48 YDS +, and even then, I’m talking about a kickoff specialist.

McKillop should be back next year also, and he was real good at ST
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Such a devastating injury though. I hope he’s healthy. Still need that QB of special teams though, to direct everything and make sure that first block in front of Ginn is made.

Michael Robinson
Whatever happened there? Why would Singletary cut that guy? There must be a good story behind the scenes.
wait til next year!
My theory on Singletary was that he listened to the fans too much
It’s just a theory, but it always seemed like what ever the fan rave was about he seemed to make that move. But honestly I think what he said his reason for cutting Robinson was true. He just knew they weren’t going to use him on offense so they figured let him go. It’s clear the last coaching staff made a lot of decisions without much logic behind it. I was one of the ones that really didn’t mind seeing Robinson walk though.

always seem to be in the right places. since the day he came in, became very noticeable beign first one down field most of the time
" oh crap its Jim "- Pete Carroll
He was a surprise. It was almost unanimous on Niners Nation that bringing him in was stupid. He was cut because he sucked on special teams, and watching some clips of him before he came here – I agreed, he sucked on special teams. I don’t think we coached him up, I just think he realized “this is how I’m going to get my check,” and started beasting with it.

I was very disappointed
that we didn’t go hard after OJ Atogwe to solidify our secondary. The Redskins only paid 5 mil a year to retain his services. He is in the top tier of free safeties in the league, and he would have given us a big boost.
So, does Baalke have another plan for this area of need? Do they really like Goldson that much? I am not completely sold on him as a complete player. He can lay the wood fairly consistently, but he struggles in deep coverage at crucial times.
I have a few picks of Guys from Free-Agency that if it does happen the Niners should take a look at. I understand that the 49ers cannot fill all of their holes through FA, especially since it may not happen. But if it does, filling a few holes before that draft would be ideal to allow the coaching staff to not have to just fill the needs through the draft but rather add more depth and talent to this team.
QB- I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on Tavaris Jackson to compete as a starting QB. He has had a chance to sit and watch Favre and hopefully he has learned something. He has talent and looked good last year when he filled in for Favre. In this case I would prefer to get rid of Carr rather than A. Smith.
RB- I like Sproles and possibly Hightower as change of pace backs. I like Westbrook but I do not think he will re-sign.
WR- I would love to get Sims-Walker and line him up opposite of Crabtree.
OL- Bringing back Baas is a good idea but I also like Colledge from GB. I know he plays LG but I’m sure he could make the transition to RG and get Rachal out of there.
DL- Resigning McDonald should be a priority and pursuing Ray Edwards could solidify the DE position.
LB- There weren’t many attractive options in FA besides the previous Niner players. I would like to keep Laboy and Lawson if possible.
DB- There are several veteran defensive backs that could improve the niners depth. I like Rodgers from Washington, Josh Wilson from Baltimore and Peprah from Green Bay.
The Niners need to sign WR Malcom Floyd
I think the Niners need a number 1 WR and who better then Malcom Floyd and we can move Crabtree to the slot reciever and Morgan down to third reciever.

Minor moves?
I’d like to see what it would cost, in terms of both money and possible tenders, to get the following guys.
Add : WR Mike Sims-Walker (JAC)
Replace : PR Ted Ginn Jr. on the WR depth chart
Cut : Ziegler and Williams get to compete for a spot.
Why it works: Sims-Walker doesn’t want to be in Jax any longer, and he won’t be paid like a true #1.
CB Eric Wright
Cut: Tarell Brown
Why it works: His relations in Cleveland are strained, but he was a promising young CB before he surrendered 3 TD’s to Boldin in week 3, gave up 10 catches for 200+ to T.O., and then got injured.
I’d be quick to give him another chance considering it was only two bad games against top receivers and I’d be playing him as either a #2 or a nickel.
