Gang Green Nation Mock Draft, San Francisco 2nd round pick

I chose to pick for the 49ers in the Gang Green Nation Mock Draft  and I selected CB Patrick Peterson in the 1st round and now I have just picked their second round pick.  I most likely chose against the consensus 2nd round pick in QB Christian Ponder and chose to go OLB instead.

I do think that Ponder has a great ceiling; it's just that I think that the 49ers need to be drafting a clear-cut franchise QB and building pieces around that, and there is not a QB in this draft worth building around imo. Not only that, but these QB's are already off to a rocky start because typically after a QB is drafted their offseason is devoted to working on mechanics and reading countless hours everyday of the teams playbook . Due to the lockout the QB's cannot do that. So the QB's taken will have little to no time to study a playbook or practice and become familiar with the team that I think it would be a waste of a pick especially since there are no Bradford's or Matt Ryan's of this draft.  Oh and I also considered RB here but it didn;t make sense to be drafting a 11-15 carry per game rb in the second round. So I turn my attention now to another pressing position on the field, LB.

Takeo Spikes will be entering his 15th season of play and the guy is physically wearing down. His wear and tear on his body is showing and NaVorro Zack Bowman is not a great replacement for Spikes.  After looking at the prospects it came down to Colin McCarthy or Carter. Although my logic might be flawed (due to the fact that Carter is recovering from a major ACL tear; and I know from experience how hard it is to recover and get back into tip top shape).  However Carter's upside is too hard to ignore. At 6'2 241 pounds he is a physical beast and he possesses good speed (based off of game film, not combine; I don't believe he worked out at the combine) he can drop back into coverage easily keeping up with RB's and TE's and he has good field awareness to top off of impressive. He is a first round talent that drops due to his injury.

Carter could also make the move to weakside OLB taking the place for Parys Haralson which would be a major upgrade.  Carter may be considered a bit of a project, but I believe that newly hired Linebacker Coach and former USF head football coach and former Kansas State LB Coach Jim Leavitt will be able to slap (pun intended) Carter into a LB force in the NFL; he's got that much potential.  I think that Carter can be the next Derek Brooks imo.  Carter is a steal in round 2 and the niners with newly acquired Peterson and Carter are an elite defense in the NFL in the next 2 or 3 years.

Just so that I can further justify my selection I think that the Niners are better off drafting Colin Kaepernick, or Andy Daylton, or Pat Delvin out of Deleware in the 3rd or 4th rounds.  If I were to write up a great draft day results for the Niners it would look like this: 1st  two rounds with Peterson, and then Carter, then 3rd round goes to Daniel Thomas RB Kansas State 6'0 230 pounds- would be a solid splitting the holes playmaker that takes some much needed pressure and carries off of the 49ers most valuable player in Frank Gore, 1st 4th round pick: Pat Delvin QB Deleware- big play arm, he is experimental and not ready to make an instant contribution, but give him some time and some good coaching and you may have found yourself a major steal in the 4th round. 2nd 4th round pick: WR Leanord Hankerson University of Miami 6'2 209 pounds- I swear the kid sounds and looks like an exact replica of our very own Braylon Edwards, great deep field threat a bit inconsistent with his hands but has good athletecism, aggressive blocking and isn't afraid to go over the middle; he would be a great compliment to Crabtree giving the future QB of the Niners weapons.

5th round ILB Casey Matthews- Possible replacement for Takeo Spikes. He would be terrific in coverage and is a sure tackler; wouldn't expect him to be as good as his brother, but he should be a solid starter, Eric Barton kind of player comes to mind

Use both of the 6th rounds to draft back into the 5th and draft: DE Lawrence Guy out of ASU: 6'4 305 pounds- He ran a 4.96 40, benched 28 times, had a 29 vertical, a 7.6 3 cone drill, and a 4.43 20 yard shuffle; he is a hard worker, not a good pass rusher but maybe some good coaching can help him get to the QB more often; good 5th round selection.

What are your thoughts on my 2nd round selection/ideal 49ers draft outcomes?

I am sorry, I copy and pasted from my other blog…The pick is OLB Bruce Carter out of the University of North Carolina

by Buddy James on Apr 12, 2011 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

If we get peterson at #7

then I agree that the 2nd and 3rd will need to be OLB and QB.

Could see Ponder or Dalton in the second and Dantay Moch in the third or Carter in the second and Kaepernick in the third.

I also don’t think that should preclude the 49ers from drafting a 4th or 5th round QB. Wouldn’t mind if Devlin or McElroy was picked up with Ponder, Dalton or Kaepernick.

in paragraph’s 4 and 5 i talk about the rest of the Niners draft and what I think they should do…I picked Delvin in the 4th

Takeo Spikes was awesome last year. I’m not too concerned about replacing him immediately and if Bowman can gain some weight he may be able to handle starting TED

by mcwagner on Apr 12, 2011 2:04 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

You want Willis at TED?

Either way they will both be good/great players in the NFL.

No

I think we drafted a second Will. I assumed when we drafted Bowman it was to make him an OLB. Now, we have the best weak ILB and a potentially really awesome wILB so I’m not sure what we should do.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on Apr 13, 2011 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Will is that Manraj?

Because that what it says on Wiki.

Back on topic. I think Bowman will do just fine as a Ted. I don’t think he was meant to be an OLB at all.

Bowman was never intended to be an OLB. HW WAS AN Olb in college but that was in a 4-3 which has completely different required skills. He was brought in because manusky had this idea of mirrir linebackers. In other words, he wanted both Ilb to be able to do the same things to help keep the offense guessing.

by Andrew9erfan on Apr 14, 2011 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

He wanted both of the ILB to be able to do everything.

It is a really smart idea. A good player can do their job if a big person or little person is on them.

the other thing about Carter is that I believe he could play OLB but be moved to ILB if need be.. He would be drafted for playing opposite Lawson and he is great in zone coverage..the better coverage the better for the Niners

by Buddy James on Apr 12, 2011 2:11 PM PDT reply actions

lawson was pretty good in coverage last year

niners need an OLB that will pressure the QB a lot more than another OLB that is good against the run and holds down coverage in the passing game. Our current OLBs give opposing QBs way too much time to throw

If Phil Taylor is still on the board

I would pick him in the 2nd round. If he’s not there Kaepernick, then Brooks Reed.

by mensa on Apr 12, 2011 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

Odds are heavily in favor of

Phil Taylor not being around in the second.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Apr 12, 2011 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Even with the article about his "potential" injury

Apparently he has some sort of foot disorder/disease/problem that can be very serious. A lot of people were saying it could be serious enough to not even draft him, especially not in the first round. It could easily be a smoke screen of some sort, but it’s worth noting.

by Shermroy on Apr 19, 2011 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

And soon after that..

our own medical staff did x-rays and such of him and helped to prove it an untruth.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Apr 19, 2011 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

No more ILB's.

We have Spikes’ replacement in Bowman.

Consider Phil Taylor if he’s still available, or Kendrick Ellis if he isn’t.

Franklin will likely walk in FA and without a rock in the middle the 3-4 collapses.

by Ougadas on Apr 12, 2011 2:57 PM PDT reply actions

I sincerely hope we get Ellis in the third

and end the Franklin uncertainty once and for all

by reedkrase on Apr 12, 2011 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

My dream

Would to be able to trade down a wee bit in the 2nd and pick up either a 3rd or a 4th to go with one of our others to trade back up into the 3rd and come into the 4th with Peterson, QB (Dalton or Kaep for example),, Ellis and an OLB (Acho, Moch, Chris Carter as examples. That would be sweet going into the 4th with two more picks there.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Apr 12, 2011 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know who Zack Bowman is, but we don't intend to replace Takeo Spikes with him.

NaVorro Bowman, on the other hand, is perfect for the job.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

by these3words on Apr 12, 2011 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

A few thoughts

Who’s Zach Bowman?

Takeo Spikes had one of the best years of his career last year.

I’d rather take Ponder in that spot.

sorry... I meant Navarro Bowman.

Zach Bowman is on the Bears… And Spikes is going into his 15th season. And I thought Aubroyo Franklin was you NT? Dang you guys have way more needs than I thought you did

by Edggy on Apr 12, 2011 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Franklin is a FA and so we need a NT. But more than that.. We need the best WCO QB we can get.

Ponder or even Kaepernick would be best in the 2nd.. Kaepernick won’t last till the 3rd round, and we may just have to start one of our rookie QBs so we have to get the best we can for our type of offense.

If Aubrayo walks as a FA

we will be pretty desperate for a good nose tackle.

by mensa on Apr 12, 2011 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

I can see him staying.

i give it a 50-50 shot.

Ponder stinks!

Stay far away. Kaepernick if you’re gonna reach on a QB.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Apr 13, 2011 3:25 AM PDT reply actions   2 recs

Or Stanzi

He’s way better than Ponder but is flying below the radar.

by Ougadas on Apr 13, 2011 3:41 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I don't mind avoiding Ponder, and I think Carter will be good, but I think he was the wrong pick.

That’s a pretty big reach and there are much better prospects at the position on the board.

And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

How about trading both 4th round picks...

for another 3rd rounder – - either defensive help or a qb?

by bcabbage on Apr 13, 2011 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

good idea..You could trade both 4th's and get Sedrick Ellis

but I think that depth is also important too and I really like who I got in both of the 4ths (Delvin and Hankerson)

you mean Kenrick Ellis?

Sedrick Ellis is with the Saints.

Harbaugh ran a pro stye offense in college right? I don’t think they ran out of shotgun

by Buddy James on Apr 13, 2011 5:47 PM PDT reply actions

To reiterate...

If the Niners were to draft Carter it would be as an OLB opposite Lawson…I am just sayin that he could make the switch over to ILB if need be
