2011 NFL Mock Draft: Prince Amukamara To 49ers Becoming More Likely?
SB Nation released their latest 2011 NFL Mock Draft and once again Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara lands in the 49ers lap with the seventh overall pick. While Patrick Peterson leads the way in our 2011 49ers mock draft database, Brian Galliford holds steady with the belief that the royal one will end up with the 49ers:
7. San Francisco 49ers: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska. Another mock draft, and the same result for San Francisco. If a bigger name slides, the Niners may pounce depending on the position. If things break as they have here, Amukamara is a safe bet for Jim Harbaugh.
As has become consistent thus far, Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert are in the top six, but Patrick Peterson is snagged by the Cardinals in this pick. They've already got Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but as Brian put it, Peterson would make a great complement to DRC. Let's hope the Cardinals don't recognize that in two weeks!
1. Carolina Panthers: Cameron Newton, QB
2. Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus, DT
3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller, OLB
4. Cincinnati Bengals: Blaine Gabbert, QB
5. Arizona Cardinals: Patrick Peterson, CB
6. Cleveland Browns: A.J. Green, WR
I've included a poll to satisfy my own curiosity more than anything else. It seems like most everybody wants Patrick Peterson, but a lot of folks recognize that the chances of arguably the best player in the NFL Draft falling to the 49ers are not all that great. I hope he does fall to number seven, but I'm not going to hold my breath for now. So, assuming nobody trades up into the top six picks, who ends up with PP?

Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska or soon to be Princess island ...!!

I don't think Prince is second fiddle to Peterson
and depending on how the ball bounces could end up being the all pro.
The bigger question for me is if it’s between PA and one of the pass rushers who do we take.
I can easily see Peterson sliding to us at #7...
if he doesn’t, I have no problems taking Amukamara over some of the highly ranked D linemen or even the pass rushers (Miller, Quinn). Bottom line, Amukamara is worthy of the #7 overall, but since he’s not the #1 CB in the draft, people become skeptical of taking “second best” that high. It’s somewhat similar to the Bucs taking McCoy after Suh was off the board.
As I see it, Cincinnati will determine where Peterson lands ...
The first three will be a QB (either Gabbert or Newton), Dareus and Miller.
If the Bungels take Green, then Arizona takes the other QB; then the question is does Cleveland take Jones or Peterson? My guess is that, even though he drafted a CB last year, Holmgren won’t be able to pass on Peterson.
If the Bungels take the other QB, Arizona will take Peterson.
I think that our only chance of getting Peterson is if the Bungels take the QB and for some strange reason Arizona decides to go pass-rusher and takes Quinn; then Holmgren has to decide between Green and Peterson … and I think that he’d take Green to give McCoy some help. In which case … we get Peterson.
An awful lot of “ifs” there … don’t hold your breath.

I could see Cleveland going for DL help...
They are switching to a 4-3 defense and they could use some help since they have no one. Figure if the first 5 picks shake out like this: Gabbert, Dareus, Newton, Green, Miller; then Cleveland could be sitting there looking at either Fairley or Quinn to help their DL, or Bowers if they aren’t concerned with injury history.
Sure reports have the Browns taking Peterson if he’s there, but that could be smoke screen to keep teams from leaping up for one of the D linemen. You could also see Fairley and Dareus flip-flop in the above scenario depending on who Fox favors in his switch to 4-3, which has no personnel to effectively run it.

I believe the top six could very possibly land just like this mock.
It makes perfect sense for each of the teams. The only thing that might change it IMO is if Carolina goes Dareus instead of Newton. They’re digging pretty deep with Newton though and I really think they’ll take him.
I forgot to mention that I'd be very happy with Prince.
He seems like a good, coachable, humble guy that would be great for the locker room on top of being a pro bowl caliber CB.
Oddly enough Prince just doesn't seem like a sexy pick at 7
I think I’d prefer Quinn. Does anybody really know how high his ceiling is? I’d imagine if he played last year he’d be mentioned in the same sentence as Von Miller.

well we cant trade down
and hope Prince is still there bcuz a team like the Cowboys (with the #9 pick) could take him… After that the Texans (at #11) could take him…. So Prince at 7 wouldnt be bad… just not ideal. But I’d be happy with Prince, it’s just I’d act like a giddy little school girl over Justin Bieber if we got the chance to select Peterson!
with the 7th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The San Francisco 49ers select.......
I'm gonna catch hell for this
but I think Harbaugh and Baalke will pick Jake Locker at # 7!
No contact doesn't mean much.
Before the draft it’s all about misdirection and a poker face.
I think Harbaugh and Baalke will pick Jake Locker at # 7!
they better not pick Locker. he is to inaccurate. one thing u cant teach is accuracy.
Trade down
If Miller and Peterson is gone, I’d consider trading down a few spots (to #12 or #13), and then taking either of the two based on availability.
I’m not quite sold on Amukumara. His strengths (size, straight line speed, aggressive jamming at LOS) work better in the college game than in the pro-game. But his weaknesses (occasional slow first step, sloppy/too high back pedal, not protecting the inside position too easily, beaten by post routes by quicker receivers) can be shown up in the NFL.
I’m not saying that he’s the next Mike Rumph. I think he will be a decent CB in the NFL, especially on run support (some site compared him to Antoine Winfield), but not a shut-down corner. He benefited greatly from Suh’s pass rush in his first year of starting (he’s a two-year starter, I believe). I think he’s a reach at a bit of a reach at 7, and may be on board till around till 12-13th pick, although Dallas a t#9 may be interested.
There are questions about Quinn, too, and not just health (limited moves, no bull-rush, not dominant at point of attack, inexperience – 20 year old, inconsistent, tendency to over-pursue).
Of the two, Quinn has more upside, IMO, but also more bust potential. Sort of like Anthony Davis.
Overall, both excelled against weaker opponents and did so-so against better competition.
Hence, I’d trade down 5-6 spots if Miller and Peterson are gone.
