2011 NFL Draft, 50 in 50: Marcell Dareus - DT - Alabama (35 of 50)

There will most likely be a bunch of defensive lineman in the first round of this years draft. ESPN analysts have speculated that there could be up to fourteen defensive linemen selected in the first thirty-two picks. If that were to happen, that would be fourty-four percent of the first round; it would be the most out of any other draft in history.

With so many options at hand, it's quite possible that the depth will not be there in later rounds. As soon as that first defensive lineman is off the board (which could be as early as the very first selection), it could start a chain reaction.

This years draft will be extremely interesting. More than past years with the pending outcome of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. Some teams, possibly even a majority of them, will be reaching for needs more than they would in a normal situation. There will be more overrated players going in rounds higher than they should or potentially would any other year.

Some players that have entered the draft this year have very high ceilings due to physical ability. Of those players, it will take the right situation and teams to help them reach their peaks.

Marcell Dareus is one of the more boom or bust type players of the draft. After the jump, I'll highlight some of the reasons why.

As you can see here in this short clip of the Alabama defensive lineman, he is to say the least relentless. What is not shown in this video, is that he from time to time will not play until the whistle blows, He conserves energy for when it will benefit him the most. That trait in and of itself can be considered both good and bad. It's good in the sense that he can change the pace of a game in seconds with his energy. It's bad in the sense that by letting a runner get by him because he's not giving a hundred and fifty percent every down that it can change the pace of a game in seconds. On ability alone, Dareus could be a monster in the NFL challenging records left behind by legends. But on the flip side, he may never live up to that if he lands on a roster coached by a subpar coaching staff.

Summary: I believe the odds are in Dareus' favor to succeed at the next level. He is likely to be a top five selection because of his power, technique, and ability when he is playing hard. A coach like John Fox would love to have a guy like Dareus to help anchor his defensive line. Any of the top five teams will be considering Dareus. If he were to fall past that, teams like the Browns, Niners, Titans, and Cowboys could all be in the run for him as well.
