2011 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Draft Picks And Trade Value Chart Points
As we prepare for the 2011 NFL Draft, we've been discussing options for the 49ers at their current draft spots and also potential trades the team might consider. Given the potential trades people like discussing and all the intrigue surrounding necessary points to make deals, I thought I'd provide a page you can bookmark listing out the 49ers draft picks and the value of each pick on the trade value chart.
I might be wrong, but I thought I'd read somewhere that the trade value chart was adjusted. However, after googling around a bit, I can't find anything mentioning that change outside of Bleacher Report opinion pieces. So, we're just going with what appears to be the common trade value chart from around the Internet. These points are based off trade value charts at Draft Countdown, Pro Football Talk, and Walter Football. If you've got a better source, please let me know and I'll adjust these values.
1. First round, No. 7 (7th overall) - 1,500 points
2. Second round, No. 13 (45th overall) - 450 points
3. Third round, No. 12 (76th overall) - 210 points
4. Fourth round, No. 11 (108th overall) - 78 points
5. Fourth round, No. 18 (115th overall) - 64 points
6. Fifth round, No. 10 (141st overall) - 35.5 points
7. Sixth round, No. 9 (174th overall) - 22.8 points
8. Sixth round, No. 25 (190th overall) - 15.4 points
9. Seventh round, No. 8 (210th overall) - 7.4 points
10. Seventh round, No. 30 (230th overall) - 2.4 points
11. Seventh round, No. 38 (238th overall) - Compensatory pick, can't trade
12. Seventh round, No. 49 (249th overall) - Compensatory pick, can't trade

Your chart (above) is the same as the one I use.
So far as I know this is the same chart that most (if not all) NFL teams now use for trades. As ninjames points out, teams may accomodate minor value differences in a trade IF it enables them to get a prospect that they REALLY want.

I agree
If you see a player you think is an amazing option, you don’t nickel and dime the trading partner on the potential trade to move up.

On the subject of prospective trades ...
Most of you know that Draft Tek does their mock drafts using a computer … matching the ranked positional needs of each team with their rankings of all of the prospects in the draft. Does this approach make sense? Maybe … but it also yields some really strange results sometimes. My biggest problem with Draft Tek is their prospect rankings … they are rarely close to any other ranking service. As you probably also know, they like to do some “what if” mocks based upon some assumed trade. Their latest “what if” involves the Niners … and goes to show how bad you can screw yourself if you make a bad trade. With that, here it is:
The assumption is that Harbaugh has decided that Gabbert is his guy, and wants to do whatever necessary at get him. So, the Niners make a trade with Buffalo to get to the third overall pick. How? The Niners trade picks #7, #76 (third round), and #108 (fourth round) to Buffalo to move up to #3 … in reality that is not enough compensation to get Buffalo to do this deal, but let’s ignore that for now. With the #3 pick the Niners take Gabbert (assumption is that Newton has gone to Carolina and Dareus has gone to Denver).
Draft Tek’s computers assume that Buffalo gets these prospects with the picks that they get from the Niners: DE/OLB Quinn at #7, ILB McCarthy with #76, and CB Wright with #108. Not good, but that’s their deal. What really hurts is what it does to the Niners’ overall draft … here’s their projection:
3. QB Gabbert; 45. CB Curtis Brown (a reach of 17); 115. RB Quizz Rodgers (value of 36); 141. NT Ian Williams (reach of 47); 174. OLB Ugo Chinasa (reach of 24); 190. G Rackley (reach of 49); 210. DE Bair (value of 3); 230. CB Burney (value of 8) … enough! IMO this draft is virtually an absolute disaster!!!
Conversely, here’s what the Arizona Cardinals get: 5. CB Peterson; QB Ponder; OLB Moch; TE Green; RB Dan Thomas; OT Curt Porter, DT Ayodele.
Of note: Seattle gets Brandon Harris and Dalton. St. Louis gets Liuget, Pouncey, Pettis and Marsh.
Great trade, Niners … NOT!!!

Jeez the Cards got Peterson, Moch and Green? Ridiculous draft.
They screwed up drafting that bust Ponder though. So our draft is still better.
Gimme 1 round!

Draftek is worthless.
First they start with a poor ranking system, then they grade team needs poorly, then they throw it all into the ungodly Frankenstein of Microsoft Excel and VBA and turn the crank, and out comes a bunch of crap.
I do agree with your assessment. My only interest in their site is the "what if" scenarios ...
Not necessarily accurate, but frequently entertaining … as in laughable.

Downloadable trade value spreadsheet
Within the last month (?), a NN posting led me to a site that let me download an Excel format spreadsheet pre-loaded with each team’s picks, value, overall pick number, division, and trade value. This is a tremendous resource for draft trade scenarios and amateur GMs, letting you sort by team, division, round, etc.
I wish I had saved the link, but I didn’t. Does anyone else still have a link with the source to this?
