It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone about who he picked.

I think that he has the chance to be one of the best WR's in the league in a few years.

Love how arrogant Rice is. “if you don’t catch the football, you won’t be a niner”. Gee, if that were true Jerry, you would have been cut after your rookie year.

How does that make him arrogant?

"I may be an idiot, but one thing I'm not sir, is an idiot." - Peter Griffin

"Pluto’s not even a planet no more, which I’m very disturbed about. I grew up when Pluto was a planet. Now, I’m 25, I turn around and Pluto’s no longer a planet. I’m going to elbow that guy in the nose." -Ron Artest

You kidding me?

This is not news with rice. He’s always been an arrogant prick. Great player to back it up.

The arrogance is that he places so much emphasis on receiver’s “hands” and “drops” when he himself struggled mightily early on, proving that Walsh doesn’t cut you if you have a case of the dropsies early in your career.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

Rice is king of hyperbole. It’s amazing how Niner fans take his word as gospel.

As I said, outstanding player, but he was quite arrogant.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Except that he wasn't.

Apparently you haven’t seen many interviews of him… he is very humble and grateful for his career.

One comment does not come close to making him all of the sudden “arrogant”.

He played to the Media for sure.

One thing I’ll give him credit for…He had them eating out of his hand and knew what to say, unlike Owens who always handled it wrong.

But media interviews don’t mean you’re not arrogant…And he was, trust me.

Is this about Rice wanting more balls thrown his way?

by manraj7 on Apr 22, 2011 11:40 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

A plausible explanation, but on reflection one that lacks credibility because of Rice’s rantings earlier this season. Acting contrary to what every third-grade peewee football player has been taught, Rice complained — twice after victories — that he wasn’t getting the ball enough.

If Rice does it, he’s just a competitor wanting to produce, when owens does it he’s a cancer.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 23, 2011 12:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Every WR does that.

In fact i believe it was Steve Young. He was telling a story that when TO first game he said he wanted the ball. Everyone laughed because Rice wanted the ball and I forget who the other person was wanted the ball.

Then another time Peyton and the Colts were playing and like always they were throwing the ball. All of a sudden Marvin Harrison was like we need to run it. This was shocking because he always wanted to throw the ball his direction.

Basically a WR who wants the ball is like an OL wanting to run it or a RB wanting to run it.

clarification

On the field and with the team he might have been an arrogant prick as you put it, but off the field he has not in my brief experience.

by David Fucillo on Apr 22, 2011 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I have had different experiences with him off the field than you, it would seem.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

One story makes him not a “prick”? Kinda goes with Drew’s theory that one comment doesn’t mean he is arrogant…Difference is I have had plenty of incidents where I did see his arrogance, not just 1.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Well he was quoting Bill Walsh.

So he must be a arrogant prick too huh?

My belief is that Walsh either:

Never said that

or

He said something along those lines, and Rice was hyperbolic, as he usually is.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

can you prove that or are you just speculating like others do about Owens?

by mcwagner on Apr 24, 2011 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions

He obviously followed Rice all his life.

Which is why he is able to say that he is arrogant.

Who really knows. Let’s just end this discussion at this point. It doesn’t seem like anything is to be gained from it.

by David Fucillo on Apr 24, 2011 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

his comments

You’re more than welcome to think he’s arrogant individual, but in looking at the link I think you’re overreacting to what he’s saying. He had his problems with the drops but he improved them, which follows his point that Julio Jones needs to improve.

I read his statement about Walsh (which arguably is my own interpretation) as something that Walsh might have told him early on when he was struggling and Rice took it to heart and improved. It’s obviously open to interpretation since we don’t have context for the statement, but that’s my interpretation of it.

by David Fucillo on Apr 22, 2011 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

You'd be surprised

How often he still had his case of the dropsies after Year 1.

Not as much as the rookie year, and we forget it because he was obviously the GOAT…But if there was one weakness to his game I had to pinpoint, it would be his hands.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

After his rookie year Rice developed the greatest hands ever

Everybody drops a pass here and there but Rice made some of the most amazing catches ever.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Apr 23, 2011 2:43 AM PDT up reply actions

but...

he improved dramatically over time and I think that’s the point he was making with Julio Jones. That he’s got to work on his hands if he wants to last in the NFL. Just think it’s good advice more than anything.

Super Bowls

When the team is winning Super Bowls, people are inclined to forgive that kind of thing.

by David Fucillo on Apr 22, 2011 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Rice wasn’t winning super bowls at that point, he was at the end of his career with us and in our 2nd straight losing season.

It’s quite similar, 2 high profile receivers yelling at coaches in the heat of the moment and one of them getting a pass because he played nice with the media, while the other one didn’t care about the media.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 22, 2011 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

So your issue is with the media, take a number. If TO tells me that this guy is going to be good I will listen also. He knows WR, so does Jerry Rice. This TO vs. Jerry is coming from where?

by mcwagner on Apr 24, 2011 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Owens and Rice are night and day in their behavior on the field.

Garcia shot put that ball behind Rice… I put that on Jeffy… I mean Rice could have caught that but it’s not like that was precision on Garcia’s behalf.

He called Garcia gay AFTER he was NOT a member of the 49ers. He also didn’t criticize it or demean him. He was asked a question by playboy magazine and gave his honest opinion.

Palmer and Romo-No. Media stirring up things.

To the media

He made those comments to the media after he left the team but if I speculate as you are then I could assume that he had made similar comotion in the locker room before that. I have met both Rice and Owens multiple times and neither was anything but gracious. As a matter of fact on one occassion Rice almost got into a fight with his wife because he was talking football with me in a semi private setting and it was annoying her. If anyone is arrogent it is Jackie Rice IMHO.

So where are the so called "mods"?

This guy just ignored the topic of the post and ranted about how much Jerry Rice sucks and T.O. doesn’t.

People like this make the site less attractive.

moderating

This FanShot was apparently overlooked by the mods (there’s no need to call them so-called mods). I was trying to get him back on topic but obviously that didn’t work out as well as I would have liked.

by David Fucillo on Apr 23, 2011 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I will let him have his opinion. Everyone could have ignored the comment, instead they chatted back. If you have a real problem with the comment that you think it takes away from the site then flag it so I can see it. I don’t check every comment on here and I could use a hand. If you want to be part of the solution to your problem by all means do so. I don’t see a problem with any of this.

This isn’t just directed to chickmagnet as much as it is to other users also. If you feel a subject is taking away from the site just hit the actions button and flag the user with a description of what is bothersome. Just because you flag something does not mean it will go away, but it will at least get out attention. If we do warn the user it will be privately.

What's your deal dude?

Because I am realistic in an opinion about your hero?

Once again, ATHLETES ARE NOT ROLE MODELS. I loved what Rice did on the field for us, the man was a magician. I’d take it for another 15 years in a heartbeat.

Just because I can admit that he was an arrogant player and an arrogant man whose ego strokes his opinion on topics does not mean I am “trolling” or “personally attacking him”.

I feel the same way about Steve Young, awesome player for us, but when he gets on his windbag rants on the radio with Ralph serving up fallacy after fallacy I feel like I want to puke.

by BustaTheRippa on Apr 25, 2011 1:16 AM PDT up reply actions

rice was not arrogant....

maybe a diva when the niners practiced at sierra college, me and my daughter were at a fence far away from the crowd watching practice. practice concluded and rice came up to me and asked how my day was.then the crowd came to where we was standing and was smashing me and my daughter against the fence! jerry made everyone back away or he would not sign autographs, asked if she was ok, signed something for her and we got out of there. the best rice moment for me.
