#MockThree 49ers Draft Haul
@Tre9er, Ninjames and I participated in a Twitter mock draft over the past week and were responsible for the 49ers picks. You can check out all of the picks at http://mockthree.wordpress.com
Overall, we were pretty pleased at least with the range and values we got with the picks we ended up making, though we were hampered somewhat by the fact that we always ended up picking after 11:00 PM, a time when many of our would-be trade partners were sleeping or off-line.
I've posted the picks and some of Tre's analysis after the jump. Let us know what you think!
1.7 (7) Prince Amukamara, CB - Nebraska
2.12 (45) Colin Kaepernick, QB - Nevada
3.12 (76) Curtis Marsh, CB – Utah State
4.11 (108) Shane Vereen, RB - California
4.18 (115) Deunta Williams, S - UNC
4.20 (117) Steven Friday, DE/OLB – Virginia Tech
6.25 (190) Owen Marecic, FB - Stanford
7.18 (221) Jamie Harper, RB - Clemson
7.xx (231) Will Yeatman, OT/TE - Maryland
7.xx (239) Blaine Sumner, NT - Colorado School of Mines
7.47 (250) Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, WR – Iowa
Traded #141, #174, and #211 to New York Giants for #117 and #221
The 49ers value Prince Amukamara as the #2 CB on the board with a good deal of separation between he and the rest of the CB’s. They would have liked to trade down and hope Prince fell to say, 10th, but there were no reasonable trade offers or agreements.
When the run on QB’s started, the prices were VERY steep to move from 45 back into the first round. The 49ers didn’t value the QB’s available high-enough to give up 2nd and 3rd round picks. We offered 2012 picks in conjunction with 2011 picks but were unable to secure a trade-up.
We feel that Kaepernick will be a great starting QB in the future, despite the fact that he will have to work on some areas of his game. Colin has shown the determination, intelligence, and leadership to rise to the challenge and we feel that looking back it will prove to be a great selection.
Curtis Marsh is a high-upside pick at CB who’s still developing at the position, although playing very well in college. We feel if Curtis continues to put in the time and effort necessary that he can easily become a starter on the outside.
Shane Vereen was a great value in the 4th round. The 49ers are in need of a change of pace back, what Brian Westbrook – no longer under contract – was supposed to be in 2011. Vereen is quick to the edges, a great receiver, and has the ability to become a workhorse back in the future. He compliments Frank Gore’s hard-nosed running very well and gives us diversity on offense.
Deunta Williams was once a first-round prospect until a leg injury cast doubt on his future. Getting a guy with Deunta’s savvy and experience in the 4th round is tremendous value. The 49ers may not have the services of Dashon Goldson and Taylor Mays is still developing. The depth behind Reggie Smith is rather thin, primarily special teams players, making this selection a good one for the future.
As the 4th round came, the 49ers found themselves in need of a pass rusher and potential replacement for Manny Lawson, who is not under contract. Steven Friday has upside to become that type of player and has shown a knack for getting after the QB. Great value in the 4th for a depth player who can become an impact player.
Owen Marecic knows most of the 49ers new staff from the time they spent together at Stanford. This helps install the offense and we know what we’re getting from Owen. On top of that, he’s a good blocker and a savvy player at FB whom no doubt Tom Rathman will find ways to use.
Jamie Harper was rated very highly on the 49ers board, though we didn’t intend to come away from this draft with two RB’s. Still, in the 7th round the value was simply too much to pass up. Harper has the upside to become an every-down RB in the NFL and with the low investment of a 7th round pick, this was a no-brainer. Frank Gore will soon be 30 and has an expiring contract. Anthony Dixon was taken in the 6th round in 2010 but had a slow start. Competition is the mantra of Jim Harbaugh at every position.
Will Yeatman is a former Lacrosse all-American and intriguing prospect at OT/TE. He has good strength in the blocking game yet can pluck the ball away from his frame as a receiver. Harbaugh likes to use numerous TE’s in his offense and Yeatman was great depth/potential at this spot.
Blaine Sumner is an athletic freak. He’s known by some as the strongest man in college football. He’s played the NT position at Colorado School of Mines and shows great anchor strength and ability to make plays off his frame. The 49ers may be without Aubrayo Franklin in 2011 so this pick was excellent depth.
Derrell Johnson-Koulianos is the all-time leading receiver in University of Iowa football history. A drug-arrest plunged DJK’s stock where we found him with the 250th pick. Still he’s a smart route runner and measured very well in his pro-day. His production could not be ignored at this spot.
Now it's your turn. If this is what ended up happening at the end of the week, would you be happy? Angry? What's the grade?

Let me think , no Casey Mathew's = C ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's just my game ...Jimmy Raye your no daisy ...!!
LOL A- to A+
When I look at a draft and think..hmmm..I might change some of those picks…in the SEVENTH…that must be a pretty good draft. No filler on the DL that could be a knock but for the haul you got it’s ok. Ok trying play devils advocate…
Rd 1 – Umm what can I say ..could say some of the stuff that’s been said around like “he might be a safety..blah ..blah” and then hear someone say “Yeah so was Merton and Ronnie..your point?” and then see it’s my own voice.
Rd 2 – I like Kaep..worth a chance and no loss of picks. Only negative is if we have to start him this year, I want him to have some seasoning.
Rd 3 – Marsh might have gone a bit too high but he could be a great player as well.
Rd 4a – Shane could be a good force in the backfield. He has some size and some power and not lacking on speed. Might want to take a look at Alex Green from HI as well in that position or could go a bit lower due to lack of pub.
Rd 4b – There could be some shakiness at this pick because of the mix of NC taint and injury and such but I think he could end up being a force and a steal at least of sorts.
Rd 4C – Reservation that we waited this long to take an OLB. Reservation that we could have gotten him lower. Not too sure about his pass rush ability. Good pick nonetheless.
Rd 6 – Perfect place to pick him up. I still think that Byham could end up being quite good as a FB/H-Back, but that’s just a pet dream of mine.
Rd 7a – Like Harper at this pick but maybe Fannin or even Saine? Just an idea.
Rd 7b – DJK I like..I can only want for more. Always looking for jewel. :-) Imagine if we’d taken Webb like I advised last year. :-)

Your RD 1 thoughts...
the “safety” talk is about Peterson, not Prince
by sanfranfanmdk on Apr 26, 2011 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I've actually heard it about both guys.
But Prince has more questions about his ability to turn and run, so…
Best case scenario for the top 6 picks:
1Car Dareus, 2Den Fairley, 3Buf Newton: 4Cin Jones 5Ari Gabbert 6Cle Bowers
Twitter me at twitter.com/grantmp1
Yet oddly enough
Peterson is the weaker one in off man.
Just goes to show the ability to turn and run doesn’t help if you are slow on recognizing the route and spend too much time looking at the QB.
Harper was nationalfootballpost's 5th highest rated back, and seemed to us...
the only guy with the potential to be a long-term starter. Plus, he’s got the size (230 lbs) that the Niners brass loves.

Pretty good draft I gave it a solid B
It doesn’t get any higher because it doesn’t address our need for NT in the mid rounds. Also though Vereen is very good I would pick more of an impact player like Taiwan Jones if he’s still around, but thats just me!
C
1: Consolation prize, but OK, I can deal.
2: Yeah! I really like Kaep and want him to be a 49er. He seems like a good guy and I think his game will translate well with some help.
3. Don’t know much about Marsh, but another CB early… interesting. My least favorite pick.
4. Perfectly satisfied with Vereen. I can’t see who was on the board (I’m at work) but I like Quizz Rodgers here too.
4. Again, don’t know much about this guy, but I feel like we have a million safeties and don’t know where he fits in. He doesn’t project to start any time soon (with Mays/Smith being the likely starters) so I don’t get it.
4. Works for me.
6. I really hope we end up with Marecic.
7. Whoa. Another RB? I dunno… I can’t see us carrying 5 RB into the season (Gore, Dixon, Vereen, Harper, Marecic) assuming Norris is cut. Potential practice squad material?
7. Drug arrest… just what we don’t need. Plus, he might not even make the team.
Overall, I come away underwhelmed. We picked WR, S, and two, TWO RB, but didn’t come away with a DE or NT. Plus, we waited until the late 4th for an OLB (and spent our third and a mid fourth on project DBs).
That is approaching senior citizen status for a running back
He’ll hit the 1700 touch mark that usually signifies the end of a RB’s productive years before we are out of the playoff hunt.
he'll soon be 28
and his contract expiring this near to 30 is the time you plan for the future.
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
You have to be in the draft to see the values we were faced with
We couldn’t just draft a DE 2 rounds earlier than he’s graded just because we needed one.
Secondary: Maiocco told me last week he wouldn’t be surprised if Fangio looked at the DB’s and felt like he needed 4 new players. Goldson is likely gone, can’t NOT draft a Safety cause you THINK he might be back…he’s a FA. Mays is still raw and Reggie has never started. Behind them you have two special teams safeties. The secondary has no speed, either. It’s full of 4.6 and slower guys, mostly. If they ran faster before, they’re much older now.
Harper was a 3rd round pick to many evaluators and with the 7th round pick (worth a ham-sandwich in terms of draft-value) it’s a great pick when Frank Gore has an expiring contract, nearing 30, and is backed up by Anthony-6th round pick-struggled-rookie-year Dixon and no one else. Thinking Dixon can’t be cut this year is asenine. Harbaugh is wiping past slate clean and forming a roster of best players who come out of off-season.
We DID take a NT and had we taken an OLB earlier we’d have passed up on a QB and our secondary woes. We have depth and sometimes the draft plays out where you need to make do with what the BPA’s are.
Do a mock draft like this, maintain an actual big-board, study the values, and you’ll see it’s not as easy as looking at the eventual 11-12 picks and using hindsight.
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
Safety was a lower need, but Williams was well worth a 4th round pick for 1st round talent.
Anyone remember Frank Gore? Great talent, slipped due to injuries.
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
I missed the NT somehow
or was it an edit?
Anyways, there is no ANYONE is likely gone, except Aubrayo Franklin IMO. Goldson could very well end up an RFA and be back next year. Reggie started part of last year and did OK, but he was a third round pick and isn’t gonna get better on the bench. Mays is extremely fast (but yes, raw). Spillman is a special teams guy and who knows what Curtis Taylor has except perpetual injuries. Still, overall, it’s NOT good value to draft non-impact, developmental players at a given position year after year. We’ve drafted 3 safeties in 4 years, two of them in the first three rounds. Adding a middle round pick to the mix probably won’t shake things up any more than starting the younger guys and seeing if they can hack it, because next year you probably end up in the same boat.
I understand your thinking on drafting Harper, and certainly I don’t think Dixon is entrenched. It’s just not the way I’d go and we’ll leave it at that.
I don’t know what the board looked like (hindsight and all that, too) but rather than grabbing another CB (and a middling one at that) an OLB might have been a good choice, maybe the Fresno State guy.
Gave it a B
don’t like Marsh or Friday picks, would rather switch and get an OLB like chris carter or dantay moch at pick 76 and a second CB at 117.
Seems like some of the picks aren't actually listed...... gave it a B
Obviously in a live mock, you can’t hope to get one of those dream scenarios that everyone posts in the draft threads. Overall very good, but I dis see some picks that stood out….
Grabbing three player for the secondary struck me as a bit odd. After looking back, I guess things could be worse. I would’ve preferred to get a NT earlier if we weren’t reaching, or get a LDE.
Two RBs was a real head scratcher, but looking at Harper, it seems like it’s worth it, as I’m not sold on Dixon like others are.
Not getting an OLB earlier also surprised me, but we can’t see what was available at the time of the picks.
I wouldn’t be complaining if we ended up with this draft after the weekend.
again the intent wasn't to get 2 RB's or so many secondary players
but it’s kinda like if somone offers you a good deal on something that isn’t a huge need, but you have the money for it…
Getting Harper was a huge steal and it is a slight need with Gore/Dixon the only two backs on the roster, one of which is injured every year and another showed brief flashes but was a 6th round pick with happy-feet. Vereen might solve some of that but if Dixon doesn’t pan-out, getting Harper will look like a brilliant move. Even if Harper OR Dixon are cut, the investment was very minimal.
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
Agree...
You’re better off getting a RB in the 7th I guess, because it’s the most likely position to stick with the team and have some type of impact other than punter or kicker, which we only need one of.
by 9thevolution on Apr 28, 2011 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions
Punter and Kicker
You need one of each.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
Im not competitive I just addicted to winning.
"We" as in the Niners....
We already have one of those positions held by arguably the best in the league. We would only require a kicker this year and that’s the only position in the 7th that’s almost guaranteed to make the roster.
by 9thevolution on Apr 28, 2011 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions
I know I use we too.
Thought you meant in general.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
Im not competitive I just addicted to winning.
Same is true for Deunta.
Though, I DO feel 2 CB’s are needed in this draft. We need better than ST’s players for our 4th-6th CB’s. I’m not sure if Brown is ever gonna get it, Nate is overpriced, Shawntae didn’t play great, the latter two are both near or over 30, and beyond them we only have a 7th round PHillip Adams who is gritty but looked lost often.
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
Well, it's a value draft....
you got what you could out of it based on the talent that was available. At least it wasn’t unreasonable an you traded away your 2015 draft in order to get every player we always see in the mocks.
by 9thevolution on Apr 28, 2011 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions
I gave a C
1. yes!
2. Rather take an OLB
3. Take Stanzi
the rest, im good with, but id reccomend taking more than 1 CB and OLB in the draft

we got 2 CB's
And I don’t think 2 OLB’s is going to happen with Gibson, Brooks, Haralson all on the roster and LaBoy, Lawson possible to return. We need a starter or potential future starter and the depth can come from FA’s/UDFA’s
Draft EVERYONE!
Tvittah
true, so no 2 OLB's
but a DT or DE in the 2nd wouldnt hurt.

What I would like to see in the first 3 rounds.
1st round- Robert Quinn. Pass Rusher and would have been a top 3 pick if he played last year.
2nd round- Andy Dalton. Great QB. Accurate and has a good arm. Good footwork but needs to work on pocket pressure.
3rd- Ras I Dowling- We can choose him in the 2nd but I think thats just reaching to him. We could choose Stanzi here if we Dont get Dalton in the 2nd.
I Welcome back the West Coast Offence to the Bay Area
Sorry guys, my overall grade for this draft is a D. Here's how I get there:
1. The trade = F. Why? You gave up two important 5th and 6th round picks (important because there was an opportunity to select any two of 7-8 players that could have really improved the roster) for a 4th and a 7th … maybe OK IF you are doing to get some specific high-need player; but you got Friday at 117 (a pick that I give a D) and then Harper at 221 (an F because of the player, but worse, the position). All in all a terrible result.
2. I simply graded every pick and computed the GPA … A for 7, 45, 190 and 239; no Bs; C for 76 and 108; D for 115 and 117; F for 221, 231 and 250. Total of 22 grade points in 11 picks = 2.0 or C average.
3. F for the trade; C for the draft selections; D for the draft.

I like this "Haul" and would be quite happy with it
of course having PP fall to us would be even better!!
