Waiting on Andrew Luck....

I am not sure if I am in the minority here, but I HOPE the Niners don't jump and take a QB in the draft this evening. We are definitely going to need some kind of magic by our front office and coach to put the team in a prime position for Andrew Luck next year, as rejoining Harbaugh and Luck seems to be a home run in bringing the Niners back to greatness. I think everyone is pretty fed up with the questionable QB's that have come to the team over the last couple years and contributed to team's mediocrity. I would think bringing in a solid veteran QB (maybe Kevin Kolb) that could help mentor a new QB next year (hopefully Luck) and play alongside with Troy Smith this year makes sense. Troy Smith could surely benefit from a veteran QB presence as well. Would love to see the Niners stock up on picks for next year so as to maybe trade up to get Luck if need be next year or prepare for some type of trade that does not deplete the team to move up and get Luck in 2012 draft. That is why I think getting the Best Available Player outside a QB in preparation for next years Luck sweepstakes makes great sense for the Niners right now. Think all would agree if Peterson is still available, a great shut down corner, would be great fit for the team over the next 5 years. Having top LB in Willis and a top CB to play together in their prime with a strong supporting D line would surely contribute to wins. Last year was surely an O line focused draft, as hopefully the experience will pay off in making these young guys much better than demonstrated last season. Harbaugh really needs to change the losing atmosphere and culture of this team, as it really doesn't matter anymore what Alex Smith says or does...he needs to go and both sides can start a new. So the new regime starts this evening as hoping the front office has put together a solid short term and long term plan that will restore Niners to glory.

Sorry, but...

If the 49ers end up with Andrew Luck in 2012, I tend to think something went horribly wrong in the 2011 season for the 49ers or for Andrew Luck. He’s on pace to be the number one overall pick and one of those “sure thing” quarterbacks that don’t come along very frequently. That means it’s going to take a Mike Ditka-Ricky Williams godfather offer to convince the number one team to move down next year.

Unless he just has an OK season, like Jake Locker did this year.

Luck is a much

different prospect than Locker. I dont think it matters one bit what kind of statistical year he puts up. He has to be the #1 pick next year. He is so much better than Locker it would be crazy to even compare the two. Though I am a Stanford fan so im biased.

Say the same thing about Locker before last season.

Locker would have been the 2nd QB off the board last year after Bradford.

Oh, wait… he was the 2nd QB off the board this year too.

they are

much different prospects. Locker has glaring holes in his game while Luck does not. Luck has been widely considered to be the most sure thing since Peyton. He and locker were not thought of the same way. That being said, I think there is no way he falls to us next year.

it's why we're gonna have to trade up to get him.

exactly

this season would have to be a disaster for the Niners to have any chance at Luck.

I don’t want them to make a rash decision, but this franchise cannot wait another whole season on the chance that they might land a QB like Luck. If there’s a good prospect at good value in the top three rounds, they better take a QB.

Lets hope that #7 is the best pick the franchise has for a long while.

I'm not so sure...

Next years class of QBs is going to be astronomically better than this year if all the expected guys come out. Luck may be a sure thing, but he was only concensus #1 pick because of such a weak QB class. We could go into next years draft with Luck rated as the 3rd or 4th best QB in the class.

Also, some teams have different preferences and will take a player that no one else views as being that good. Take a look at the 2nd rounder that the Seahags took when they couldn’t work out a trade.

No way we get Luck unless we intentionally tank the season. It’s going to be hard to lose to the Cards.

Trade up for him.

As others have said, it wouldn’t be worth our entire draft

Why not? If we have a good draft this year, the only real hole left is QB.

Players retire, players get hurt, players leave during free agency…

No way on earth are the Niners going to be rock solid at every single position after this draft

Including QB. Regardless of whether or not they pick one.

i dont think Luck is a secret

Potentially 28 teams would kill to have Luck too, why do we get him? What if he gets hurt and never plays the same, what if he wasn’t really that good? Harbaugh will have to find himself a new Andrew Luck. I don’t care about Andrew Luck but that’s just me

by mcwagner on Apr 28, 2011 12:52 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

We will have a better view of who would take Luck after this draft and some of the potential trades that may go down. If a team trades a good amount for Kolb, they will probably skip on Luck. If Carolina takes Gabbert/Newton, they will skip on Luck barring a crazy tank job/injury.

I am a huge Stanford fan and a huge Andrew Luck fan and I’d love to have him. I think it is highly unlikely but I do agree that we should not pick someone in the 1st round. I wouldn’t want to necessarily be locked to someone that I’m not 100% sure of. But on another not, we are not bringing Troy Smith back. I would find it highly unlikely if they did. They have made no effort to show any interest in him at all.

Harbaugh

said, while at USD, that Josh Johnson was much better than Troy Smith. I think its pretty safe to say he will never be a niner again.

by tom88gsw on Apr 28, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I would hate to see a QB drafted in round 1-3… I think a free agent QB will be picked up next week when free agency is expected to start.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect ___?__ to be super so soon. Alex Smith is no longer expected to do much for this team in the future... on to the next one!!

Luck's stock is going to take a dive

He loses a lot of seniors on the team. He is losing his coach. He is losing his D. Stanford is going to lose and Luck is going to be on a losing team. His stock will drop past Barkley and/or Jones.

Yep....

I don’t know people think he’ll still be the best QB prospect next year. He was the best this year because of such a weak class. Look at Locker last year who was in a class with one good QB and another one who had over-inflated stock. Even his stock tanked and only rose again because of another weak QB class.

I don’t understand why its even discussed, however, its not gonna happen.

Luck Next Year

If SF doesn’t draft a QB, that’s because Harbaugh is going to trade whatever amount it takes to get the #1 pick next year for his boy Luck!

If Atlanta can do it, so can we.

Sorry, I can't bite.

Luck might be a good QB, but, for the niners to suffer YET ANOTHER pathetic season is NOT A GOOD IDEA! First off, we play in a rather weak division ….for now. The other teams against us won’t be downtrodden forever while we try to pick the ‘shrooms off our pizza in order to take that first bite. Second of all, didn’t we release Troy Smith? Third of all, I think tradeing anything other than a mid-3rd rd pick for Kolb is insane! The sample size we have for Kolb is only, what, 7 game starts? IMO…not nearly enough for a 1-2 rd pick. Especially considering we pick so high! The Niners team we have is built for NOW! This year. Not 2012 when Luck desides to come out. Oh…by the way…..in case you were thinking getting Luck next year is a lock, think of the recent QB’s who deceided to stay that 1 extra year have turned out so far.

Colt McCoy: Going to become the poster child for Socialized medicine playing in Cleveland after 2 shoulder surgeries already.
Tim Tebow: “Touchdown Tim-my” was slated to be the #1 pick in the ‘08 draft when he decieded to stay 1 more year in Gainesville. His stock dropped so much he slipped to the 20’s where he was taken by Denver. Now, they don’t even want him!
Brady Quinn: ’Nuff said.

What if Luck doesn't declare for the draft.... and just walks on for open tryouts for the 49ers?

We probably won't be a good team this season.

With this stupid CBA stuff there might not be OTA’s or minicamps for Harbaugh and staff to get the new offense and defense going. Even if there was a new CBA in place the team would still be learning a brand new playbook, AGAIN. Without a solid QB in sight we are not going to be a very good team so there is still hope we can be just bad enough to get Luck next year.

QUESTION: When is our QB going to answer questions like "You only threw 4 TD's today. What's wrong with the offense?"
ANSWER: When Andrew Luck ditches the draft and we sign him as an undrafted free agent!!!

by crumpedup15 on Apr 29, 2011 7:15 AM PDT reply actions

You haven't gotten the memo have you?

We’re free to open OTAs as of today. Also free agency will begin at some point today, most likely as soon as the 2nd round kicks off.
