Mel Kiper, Todd McShay Round Two Mock Drafts: Brandon Harris And Colin Kaepernick?
Although yesterday provide how futile NFL mock drafts really can be, some folks have decided to try and mock out the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both decided to get back into the swing of things with their respective second round mock drafts. Kiper went with Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick, while McShay went with Miami, FL cornerback Brandon Harris.
In poking around the Internet I found three additional mocks, including Mocking the Draft, SB Nation's NFL section, and Maiocco's mock. In less than shocking news all three have the 49ers selecting a cornerback with the 45th overall pick. Of course, all three also have different cornerbacks with that pick.
Mocking the Draft decided on Texas CB Aaron Williams, SB Nation went with the other Texas CB Curtis Brown, and Maiocco went with Lousville's Johnny Patrick. Of those three, all had Andy Dalton going to Cincinnati with the third pick of the round. However, only Mocking the Draft had Colin Kaepernick dropping past the 49ers.
As things currently stand, I'm pretty sold on the idea that the 49ers will select either a quarterback or a cornerback with their second round pick. I realize that it doesn't take rocket science to figure that one out. There are some potential sleeper positions with pick number 45 (Tre9er suggested nose tackle), but CB and QB have to be pretty high on the list right now.
I asked about sleeper positions on twitter earlier today, so I figured now is a good time to ask here. Do you see anything other than CB or QB with this pick, and how likely would it be for that alternate position to be the pick?

Rick Gosselin
had a pretty good draft
http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2011/4/28/2138958/rick-gosselins-mock-draft-rams-pick-rb-mark-ingram
1. Carolina – Cam Newton
2. Denver – Von Miller
3. Buffalo – Marcell Dareus
4. Cincy – A.J. Green
5. Arizona – Patrick Peterson
6. Cleveland – Julio Jones
7. San Fran – Blaine Gabbert
8. Tennessee – Jake Locker
9. Dallas – Tyron Smith
10. Washington – Christian Ponder
11. Houston – Aldon Smith
-—-
He got the Jones pick correct, but for the wrong team lol.
Got the first 5 correct
plus the trade with ATL (no one saw that one) netted the correct Julio Jones selection at 6.
Whiffed on Gabbert.
nailed the “surprise” Locker, got Tyron Smith, and a QB going 10th.
He has Ponder in the mid 1st round too, and Aldon near the 49ers…
Aren’t they explicitly guessing? I mean, isn’t that exactly what a mock draft is: a bunch of guys making guesses?

seems about right
These guys all basically admit that they’re lucky if they get 1/4 of the picks right. A draft is just not something that you could predict accurately ahead of time unless you had access to every team’s draft board. And even then, there would be some hiccups.

let’s just listen to the people who correct every pick correctly!
Adopted Father of Marc Kroon. He better make the roster.
Guessing?
There are hundreds and hundreds of college players, and pretty much everybody who was expected to go in first round, went in first round, usually not too far away from a projected position.
A.Smith was project around 10 to 12, went at 7. Boo hoo..
All this sounds much more then a guess.
personally
I want to know how the players they project do compared to the players that are actually picked. That is how you decide how good someone is at making a mock. If the player these guys said should be picked turns out a stud, and the player that is picked is a dud, I’d say they did well. Someone with a lot more time than me would have to figure this out though.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
I said it all along thats all is, A good guess, But you see when the guesser don’t get who he wants, He rub them in the ground, The coach or GM don’t know what they doing, I find it a lil funny at times.. I know this thread isn't about Smith but I didn't want to get chopped
The only reason people would be down about our pick is because mock drafts didn’t have Smith going to us. It’s incredible how big of an influence those things have on fan-base’s perceptions of players. I guarantee if he was rumored to go to a team one spot ahead of us or even to us, people would be ecstatic.
Pros:
Young
Athletic (basketball prep star) dual athleticism is awesome in pass rushers
Really, really long arms
Everybody says he’s a character guy
Still very raw (redshirt sophomore)
Has obviously shown tremendous technique and finesse which is very hard and sometimes impossible to teach guys
Cons:
Stats weren’t great Jr. year
-he missed the first three games (Illinois, McNeese St. and San Diego St) Those are the games where the stat padding comes in for all top-tier players. And the fact that he played through injury after that is impressive.
Not enough value at that the #7 slot
-and who did have value? Quinn? 14th pick. Fairley? 13th. Prince? 19th. Bowers? still available. We got the best value possible with the exception of trading down.
Will be compared by everyone to PP
-let’s face it, we set ourselves up for failure when we had Peterson as our expectancy for this draft. Whomever we drafted would inevitably be compared to him
No “top-tier” speed.
And the last OLB/DE prospect with top-tier speed as his best asset who did well in the NFL was….?
I don’t think it’s crazy at all to see his ceiling as DeMarcus Ware.

Haha well it’s the draft! Reality, regardless of how circular it is, is the only reasoning available. It’s how the pick will ultimately be measured. Looking at the 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 picks there isn’t a single player I would want instead of Smith. So yeah, I think we got good value. The NFL draft IS circular reasoning, aren’t all drafts?

by atxgiantsfan on Apr 29, 2011 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions
Not at all
It’s circular reasoning (and therefore foolish) to say Smith was good value at 7, because we selected him at 7. It doesn’t make sense. That’s not reality… that’s a fallacy.
Where we picked him has nothing to do with it. It’s where we picked him in relation to who was picked after him. I fail to see how added context qualifies as circular logic. Was he a bad pick at #7? I don’t think so, but possibly. Was he a bad pick at 7 when you look at the 5 players who were drafted after him? Absolutely not.

Just throwing it out there
Charlie Casserly was just on NFL Network and mentioned that the 49ers and Dallas were two teams who were trying to work out trades to get back into the first round last night. He didn’t say anything about who the teams were looking to get but I don’t think it would be a stretch to think the Niners were trying to get Dalton or Kaepernick.
I agree with the mocks up there that Dalton is very likely to be picked by the Bengals but the Niners might talk to the Pats or Broncos to try to jump the Bengals.
Thank god they didn't, really do not want them to trade the 2012 1st rounder.

I wouldn’t draft him in the first two rounds, if I needed a QB. I think he’s boom or bust (40/60). He just flicks his wrist and the ball travels 70 yards; his arm strength is just incredible. And I think he’s a relatively accurate passer. But he doesn’t seem to process what the defense is doing quickly, and he’s often late on a throw he should’ve made an instant before. That’s why I wouldn’t draft him in the early rounds.
Small criticism..

4) Gets him the ball more often. Keeps him on the field longer, more opportunity to pad his stats. Inflates W-L record.

You seem to be mistaken on a few things...
Iupati and Davis don’t play on the same side of the OL (Iupati – LG; Davis – RT). It’s possible that Davis is moved to the left side by the coaches, but I think he’ll stay at RT for at least this year.
The center position was not FUBAR at all last year. Baas struggled a bit in the first game of the year, but after that, he became more comfortable and played better as the year progressed. Considering it is his natural position and he did well there, plus his relatively young age, I would think the Niners want to bring him back. They could get a guy that plays back up G/C late in the draft and bring him along slowly to eventually replace Baas. That is if they don’t want to keep Heitmann considering his neck injury.
All that said, they could take a center here, but there are much bigger needs with better value, including NT.

I almost feel like they’ll wait another round to address CB. It just seems like there’s a lot of guys still left and one of them would likely fall to the 3rd who wouldn’t be that much worse than what you’d get in the 2nd.
NT is a definite possibility (Paea or Ellis). So, I think, is WR (Titus Young or Greg Little). Darkhorse— what if they shocked us all and got ANOTHER passrusher? I have to admit, I kind of think the best value on the board at this point for the Niners would be either Brooks Reed or Akeem Ayers.
My head says they should trade up and secure a shot at a QB. My gut is telling me they’re not going to draft a QB because there’s someone on the FA/Trade market that they’ve got their eye on (and I don’t mean Alex Smith… though he would be welcome back as well).

DII NT Blaine Sumner seems like an interesting late round gamble. Here’s what SI’s Tony Pauline had to say about him:
Affectionately known as the “Vanilla Gorrilla,” Sumner is one of the best-kept secrets on the defensive line. He’s an all-conference player that posted 32 tackles and blocked three kicks as a senior. He completed 52 reps on the bench press during his pro-day workout, while squatting 905 pounds and benching 625. Sumner is also on pace to receive a master’s degree in Engineering and Technology Management. He’s lined up at fullback and was also used as a short-yardage runner. Sumner has drawn interest from a number of teams with the Raiders and 49ers leading the way.

No...there's no other positions...
That are as high of need as QB and corner. It apparent to me that the FO has no desire to spend in the FA market. So, that means, the thought of us going after a vet at either of these positions is not in the cards. Personally, I would take Aaron Williams if he’s there. The fact he can play either the corner, or safety spot, makes him a better bet. Then, I would take a couple of the extra picks we have and tryto trade up and grab either Dalton or Kapernick as our QBOTF. If Harbaugh is such a QB guru as everyone says he is, then he could take these raw guys and turn them into steller signal callers for this team.

bowers would only play with four down lineman or nickles packages. he does not fit in 34 system

Agreed. I don’t think we’ll be running a traditional 3-4 though. With what I’ve seen from Fangio defenses and from what I’ve heard him say about the defense he wants to implement flexibility is at a premium. The talent is off the charts for where we’ll be picking in the second round and I think it would be smarter to increase our strengths in this draft instead of repairing the chinks in our armor.

but he will not be on the field that often, do not see him being good against the run or dropping back into coverage.
only see him playing with four down lineman on the field. anything other than 3rd and long teams will run right at him.

they granted the stay on the lockout. Monday players will go and appeal.

well
No training camps will take place.
Players can have no contact with the team.
No more coaching.
And since we are a team with new coaches we get the most effected.

fair point.
but in the grand scheme of things i think we’ll be ok in a lockout. especially if there ends up being a rookie cap. that way we aren’t paying as much for “potential”
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
yeah.
I think next year we are gonna have a worse record that this year unless we get a QB who can make things happen. Im ok with that though, as long as the players are progressing and we have a vision of the type of team we want to be in the future.

maybe it’s just Fangio messing around with the players and locking the doors.

Just until monday, apparently
The stay, according to a source familiar with the players’ interests, would be of the “administrative” variety, meaning the lockout would not be lifted until Monday at the earliest. At that point, the Eighth Circuit would weigh the players’ argument against a stay pending the league’s appeal of Nelson’s ruling to the Eighth Circuit and decide whether to keep the stay in place until they render a decision on the appeal.

Thats IF the 8th circuit would change their mind.
No reason they change their mind if they just granted a stay.

ESPN
should be ashamed of themselves. They knew the stay hadn’t been granted and that the 8th circuit was still deciding on the matter. Hell we all knew that the stay wouldn’t be granted till at least monday…why report such a story unless it was planted by an owner? I hate this crap.

3rd round CBs
There’s been a lot of talk about guys like Burton, House, etc.. and deservedly so, but little on Shareece Wright from USC. He’s got some decent measureables (~5’11, 185, 4.42), plays big for his size like former trojan teammate and current NY Giant Terrell Thomas. Very agressive tackler, something the niners lacked last year and has above average coverage skills. Maybe could turn into a good number two guy. Displayed cold hands though, couldn’t record any interceptions last season.
its gonna be how i used to rig my lines in madden.
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
Dana Stubblefield and Bryant Young quality, IMO.
I think they’d have liked a real big DT/NT so this pick could fizzle, but it has the potential to be a terrific pick; like DS and BY terrific.
always free agency and the second round, fairley would be hard pressed not to play hard next to suh and they would be pretty hard to run against that line. lions are going to be decent. far cry from when they drafted three wr’s very high in the first round three years in a row and they all ended up beings busts.

football sites
I think it’s on all the football sites. Away from my computer right now so can’t check it. If it’s not on every football site, then it’s a matter of our media market or traffic to the site. SB Nation sells the ad space.

how some pundits are so negative before the draft than after they are picked they are singing them praises.

i think these positions might dominate the second round.

QUESTION: When is our QB going to answer questions like "You only threw 4 TD's today. What's wrong with the offense?"
ANSWER: When Andrew Luck ditches the draft and we sign him as an undrafted free agent!!!
I would be happy with Johnny Patrick in the 2nd
If Maiocco’s prediction comes true, I would be happy with Patrick Peterson in the second round.
And then Stanzi in the 3rd.
We can grab a quality RB in the 4th.
Patrick Peterson in the 2nd round
would be most nice indeed.
Especially since Arizona already picked him.
Trade
Anyone think the Pats will trade the 33rd pick? To us? For maybe this years 3rd and next years 2nd? Grab a QB of our choice and a CB.

I think it's a possibility
But it would probably be for something more like this years 2nd and next years 3rd. If the Niners really like Andy Dalton it seems pretty obvious that they will have to get ahead of the Bengals. That leaves 2 options, the Pats or the Broncos.
Next years 2nd
I just hoping to have two 2nd round picks this year so we can still grab a CB after we grab the QB. Even with the drafting of Smith, he won’t be a beast instantly and our current CB’s are still shaky at best.

If you want to keep this years 2nd and get to 33
it would take a lot of other chips to the the Patriots to agree. Might have to throw in both 4’s with the 3rd round pick and future 2nd. Or you could make a deal like the one with the Panthers a couple years ago and send next years first for the 33. Either way I think it would cost too much to get a 2nd without giving up the Niner’s own 2nd.
The Pat's phone is ringing off the hook right now - They're looking for highest bidder among QB seekers.
