2011 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Select FB Bruce Miller
The San Francisco 49ers have brought in a fullback to compete with (or replace) Moran Norris in the form of seventh round pick Bruce Miller. The 49ers have four 7th round picks in the 2011 NFL Draft, so it is not surprising to see a pick like this. Who knows whether he'll actually do enough to take the starting fullback job; after all he is a seventh round pick.
The folks at Big Cat Country put together this pros/cons scouting report
PROS: Very high motor player with good hustle. Great production in his 4-year career with over 30 sacks. Will be a versatile player that could fit as a situational pass rusher at defensive end or potentially a stand up linebacker in a 3-4. Does a lot of good pass rushing work with second effort. Smart player that knows his assignments and scrapes down the line of scrimmage well.
CONS: Doesn't have a true position in the NFL yet. Might not be explosive or strong enough to rush the passer with his hand on the ground. Overall speed may not be good enough to play full time stand up linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Needs to work on his pass rushing repertoire and can get engulfed in the running game.

Oh he's good
But due to the idiot Snyder giving Haynesworth the keys to Ft. Knox defensive lineman are insanely expensive to franchise.
Does anyone really think from the business end that Franklin is going to accept a crapton less than he would make than if we just had to tag him again? (assuming a tag is in place).
If we don’t he’s gone.
How did the Tag go up so quickly
Haynseworth was signed last year and Franklin’s tag didn’t cost 13. Or did it?

Combination of
Haynesworth’s cap number being almost 25 million and Seymour being designated as a DT despite getting DE franchise money.
Averages are pulled up quickly with small sample sizes and distant outliers.
How much is the Tag?
7 million for a Nose? He’s easily worth that

Franklin was the best 3-4 NT, the 3rd-best DT, and the 5th-best DL in the NFL with respect to stop rate against the run. Specifically, 93% of the Franklin’s tackles in the run game resulted in an inefficient (aka unsuccessful) gain for the opposing OFF.
So Franklin, who plays a position in which the purpose of life is to stop the run, is the most efficient run-stopper at that position, and he doesn’t go to the Pro Bowl? Even after they were down to 15th in the pecking order? Thankfully, as you’ll see shortly, this egregious omission was remedied via another Niner’s Pro-Bowl participation

That’s it. That’s his number one concern. The DEs and OLBs are there for the pass
the DEs and OLBs didn't help stop the run?

Football Outsiders
We were 5th against runs between the gaurds in YPA.
Chicago, Philly, Pittsburgh, Atlanta.
One of those teams runs a 3-4. I’d say Hampton and then Franklin. I’m not saying Franklin isn’t one of the best two or three NT’s in the game.
But I’m sorry I started all this.
I just wanted to say from a team building and salary cap perspective, all the other NT FA’s have been re-signed, and Franklin is the only option for anyone who still wants one.
I don’t think we can afford to give him the contract he wants and build a successful pass defense with what’s left.
Sure we can
Casey Hampton only got a 3 year deal at 21 million.
We can do that easily to sign Franklin for 3 years.
nose tackles last a long time too.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
SaberCats Examiner | SB Nation Bay Area | Niners Nation | Twitter
I wouldn't be worried about 3 yrs at 21 million
But with Franklin being the only available option, I’m worried that might go to 3 yrs at 33.
Lesser players get paid more all the time due to the way contracts leapfrog each other.
I can't imagine it being that high
given that neither Casey Hampton or Vince Wilfork got more than that. Wilfork’s deal was for $8 million per
Last year
It will be significantly higher unless there is absolutely no interest from other teams.
Franklin is much better than Wilfork. Not quite as good as Hampton who is very underrated, but close.
So even if we push it to an average of $9 million
Give him three years at $27 million with $15 million guaranteed.
Well let me put it this way...
If you’re a DE and you lead the league in Sacks… You’re generally considered the best DE in the league that year.
NT is the polar opposite of that position. If you’re the #1 run stopper in the league as a NT you’re the best NT in the league that year.

by Andrew9erfan on Apr 30, 2011 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions
That's because there's probably less than 10 schools
in all of NCAA (you could probably go DIV 1 and DIV 2 as well) that play 3-4.
just doesn’t happen. You want to assure yourself a draft spot as a LB or D-lineman? Go to a school that plays a 3-4
Von Miller
Is probably the only highly rated pass rusher to actually play OLB in college…
…but he’s going to play in a 4-3 now
LOL

Linebacker and Fullback
Are very similar positions. The players on most ironman teams who play fullback also play the mike. Centuries ago I did. =P
Just keep in mind...
Most of us are a bunch of amateurs who like to spout off anything and everything regardless of accuracy or context so if you legitimately know what you’re talking about most of the time you’re going to be frustrated dealing w/ the NN masses.

I think his issue and mine with the FB thing
Is could we have picked an actual FB? How about an actual CB? Just seems like we are trying to pick these guys and changing everyone. Getting a little ahead of ourselves I think. This year, with the possibility of losing OTA’s is not the year to try to change a guys position.
Solid point
I agree w/ that—this draft does have the coaching staff’s hand prints all over it. It’s like all the coaches were allowed to have a slot where they got to take a player they think they can ‘mold’ to fit their scheme. We’ll see how that works.

Not surprised if try to trade for Marecic
I know that this guy is also a FB, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to trade for Marecic. We know that Harbaugh loved him, why wouldn’t they want to get him?
Why would the Browns trade?

well i couldnt give a real opinion on that
miller, to my knowledge, hasnt played FB at the college level. That pick is all projection and hard to argue with in the 7th round. I certainly like it for the cowboys in the 7th round to find out.

That brings up a queston:
What exactly is draft qualification?
Because we’ve picked some pretty obscure players in the draft, but do they have to register with the draft or something?
Obviously, you can’t pick college players still with their college team, but could you technically draft somebody in the stands?

Spikes has been awesome for awhile. You could perhaps be concerned about his age, but I think he has another couple seasons of high level play left in him. Particularly if he’s playing beside Willis.

I guess we can say we got a QB…….but we reached for everyone else, except for maybe Hunter!
Smith wouldn't have made it to 13.
If we had taken Prince nobody would say anything, and he fell way further than Smith would have. But most of them beside Smith, Kap, and Hunter are head scratchers.
After the 4th round you can't really call anything a serious reach
It’s all a crap shoot at that point. The draft boards for all the teams and prognosticators are so different that any type of consensus ranking is largely pointless.

Ballke and Harbaugh are really in their own world, man
I only pray they are in the right world, and we’re in the wrong world!

Person
6 foot 5 inches, 299 LBs. First team all Big Sky.
Person earned First Team All-Big Sky Conference honors in 2010, starting all 12 games and helping lead MSU to a Big Sky Conference Championship and the FCS Playoffs.
A two-time All-Big Sky choice, Person graded out at 90% in 2010, and didn’t allow a sack. The Bobcats led the Big Sky in scoring offense, total offense, passing offense, and first downs.

maybe they don’t understand that just because drafting a 7th round talent in the 3rd round doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the reverse
by Andrew9erfan on Apr 30, 2011 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions
err, was supposed to be drafting a 7th in the 3rd is a bad idea

They're small school guys
I’d rather have a really good small schooler than an average FCS guy

Seriously? I’m sure this guy would have been available as an undrafted FA
of course...

Person is prospect from the FCS ranks with the intangibles, work-ethic and football smarts to become a backup offensive lineman. However, lacks the foot quickness and body control necessary to start or protect the blind side. While he did not allow a sack during his senior year and shows the ability to thwart the bull rush, should have problems dealing with speed rushers. Doesn’t play with great pad level or blow defenders off the ball but does a good job getting into position as a run blocker. Consistently recognized for his leadership and effort in college. Person could hear his named called late on Day 3.
sounds like OG or practice squad player
I'm in business of giving the business and business is booming!
BOLD PREDICTION
He beats Chilo in camp and starts day 1. Gives up 15 sacks on the season but is still better than Chilo
Gimme 1 round!

So 2011 is different from 2010 solely because of the coaching staff?
Because on the field, I don’t quite see any difference. We’re bringing Alex Smith back as well.
I feel hoodwinked. Harbaugh and Co. don’t add 6 wins to this team.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
Cool don't bother going after someone who might actually made the team.

Hester, and he's listed as 235, which is probably right.
Of course, it’s not out of the question Havili puts on some added weight, but at 227, his role is limited.
shit
what makes it worse it’s the perfect fit for him

Bozo the Clown
Smarter than he looks. Needs to gain mass. But was a deparate need for a team with only 17 OGs. Great upside if he would only stop standing upside down.
And he ran a 4.3 unofficial

Grinders
Sounds like the Niners are drafting a bunch of hardworking ‘grinder’ types from reading the descriptions of these players. Definitely jives w/ Harbaugh’s image. I hope they can play.
