San Francisco 49ers Select CB Curtis Holcomb With Final Pick Of 2011 NFL Draft

And so the San Francisco 49ers 2011 NFL Draft is complete. With their final seventh round pick, the 49ers selected defensive back Curtis Holcomb out of Florida A&M. GO RATTLERS! Cornerback remained a position of need and the 49ers added another to go with Chris Culliver.

Unfortunately I really can't find anything on short notice on Holcomb, but I'll keep looking around. He did have three interceptions for the Rattlers last year, so that's certainly a plus. Well, it's better than zero interceptions. One of those interceptions came against Howard and two came against Hampton.

At this point, heading into the 2011 NFL season, the 49ers cornerbacks will consist of Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown, Tramaine Brock, Will James, Chris Culliver, and Curtis Holcomb. I'm assuming Colin Jones sticks at safety, but I could be wrong. Either way, I'm not ready to pack it in, but that is not exactly awe-inspiring given some of the struggles we saw in 2010 in the secondary.

by See Jay on Apr 30, 2011 4:37 PM PDT reply actions

This draft certainly wasn't exciting but it's not nearly as bleak as the overreaction suggest

I’m happy with the two o-line picks in the late rounds because our offensive line is injury prone, old, and the depth sucks. We needed a QB and didn’t overpay. I think Kaepernick is good value where he was. Aldon Smith was probably a 10-15 pick in the first round but if you want him and nobody wants to trade back I’ve got no problem drafting him there. Who else would the 49ers have drafted?

LB turned FB? Not exactly unheard of the NFL. The nice thing with those types of guys is that they have an innate athleticism that will serve well on special teams. We also got a couple of DBs to compete for a nickel cornerback slot and I’m ok with that too.

I like Kaep, has HUGE upside, but I think he has a long way to go, and typically you want your 2nd round guy to contribute first year. Kaep could, but I think it would be rushing him.

With how our draft turned out it was just a little bit

I’d probably do it again. But like I said, a guy thats only a couple picks out of the first round, is usually a first rounder that dropped, so you want him to produce the first year and i think that’s a bit early for Kaep

AHHHHHHHHH

“Leap of faith?”

HUUUUUGE UNDERSTATMENT

by brundylop on Apr 30, 2011 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

that said, Alex seems like a nice guy

but that’s a good way to screw over the 49ers is to take the book to the Cardinals lol.

by brundylop on Apr 30, 2011 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

That means he's signing.

No way they would give him a playbook if he hasn’t basically committed.

by Nicoyas on Apr 30, 2011 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

You're right

I guess the contract thing is a technicality to avoid fines and stuff.

by brundylop on Apr 30, 2011 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It won't help

Alex is too stupid to figure out the WCO. He is too mentally slow on the field to ever be a qb of any quality.

He is stupid, he is inaccurate, he is a loser, and based on his dumbass grin after throwing picks, he doesn’t care.

Ghod how I HATE Alex Smith.

by 5e3deluxe on Apr 30, 2011 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

well he's gonna probably going to be a 49er

so hopefully you can put your personal hatred aside for the team.

ALEX HAS A PLAYBOOK!!!

Thank the Lord

BUT NOT A CONTRACT!

LEAP OF FAITH!

Man’s really valuing Alex’s word, eh?

by brundylop on Apr 30, 2011 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

If you give a man the playbook, he’s going to sign a contract. I think they’re just waiting for the Court issue to be resolved and for the NFL to give the green light on FA signing. I’m just happy that Smith can study the playbook

I think Alex has already signed a contract

it’s just for technicality reasons with the lockout that they aren’t announcing it.

by brundylop on Apr 30, 2011 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s probably signed, just not dated.

It probably actually got signed and sealed

But not delivered to the NFL before the lockout was reimposed

Weird draft. Not bad, just odd.

1st round: I think with a proper off season Aldon Smith should be able to start at OLB. Hopefully on Monday the 8th Court doesn’t grant a longer stay. I believe Aldon will develop into a monster pass rusher. A 12-15 sacks-a-year type.

2nd round: Kaepernick needs to sit behind Alex for at least half a season. Could start games late in 2011 and will be full time starter by 2012. I think Kaep will become a good QB.

3rd round: Culliver will be the nickel CB/S in 2011. Also kick returner. He could be a starter by 2012. Supposedly has good upside. Will have to wait before I judge whether this was a good pick.

4th round: Kendall Hunter will be a good #2 RB behind Gore and supplanting Dixon. Dixon will be #3 RB in the rotation.

5th round: Kilgore will be the starting Center in 2012. He could push Chilo at RG in 2011.

6th round: Ronald Johnson will make the team as a #4 or #5 WR, slot receiver, special teamer. Nothing special. Safety Colin Jones might make the practice squad.

7th round: Bruce Miller will be the only FB on the 2011 49ers and on. Will replace Moran “Watch me backpedal my entire route” Norris. Mike Person will make the practice squad as a G/C. Curtis Holcomb will make the practice squad or get cut.

All in all, the 49ers only drafted maybe 3 or 4 future starters. But all at needed positions like OLB, QB, and C. If Aldon and Kaep both become good players by 2012 this will be a team that dominates the division for years to come. But a lack of quality CBs and D-Linemen might hold them back from being serious playoff contenders.

I’d give this draft a B-. They got the QBOTF and the pass rusher the defense sorely needs. But without getting a starting CB or any future NT or DEs, this draft wasn’t nearly as successful as it could have been.

I survived the David Carr Press Conference Thread 3/06/2010
And Harbamania. And the San Francisco Giants 2010 World Series season.

If we could just sign Jamarcus Russell

Elite Nose Tackle. Run game and pass game enjoy immediate benefit. Cough medicine sector enjoys immediate benefit. Several buffets in the area go out of business
