Baalke – Still Crazy After All These Years

As Baalke enters his seventh season with the 49ers it’s obvious why the Niners are the team they are.  Every year it’s the same thing and as long as Baalke remains nothing is going to change.

Why?

Well, haven’t you heard? Rumor has it we’re supposed to be going back to our roots.  That’s right!  Harbaugh was hired to restore our birthright and revive the West Coast offence in San Francisco! The truth is most of the pieces for running the West Coast offence in San Francisco are already in place. We have most of the skill positions and the offensive line to do the job. Beyond the offensive scheme and play calling – What else do we need?

How about a fullback?

If you look back to the 49er West Coast championship years you had Roger Craig and then Tom Rathman at fullback. They excelled at run blocking, picking up blitzes and both could run with the football. Moreover, both fullbacks excelled at catching the ball because coming out of the backfield as a hot receiver is a critical component of Walsh’s West Coast scheme. This is one of the reasons Roger Craig was the first man in the history of the NFL to get a 1000 yards rushing and receiving. Simply put – A fullback that can block, run and catch the ball is a critical path component of the West Coast offense.

I guess Baalke didn’t get the memo.

Oh wait! Didn’t we draft a fullback near the bottom of the last and final round with the 211th pick when we tapped Bruce Miller? (If your last name is Miller, you got to be a fullback, right?)

Not exactly. In fact, we’re not even in the same zip code because Miller is not, nor has he ever been, a fullback. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I read the transcript of the phone interview. When asked whether he was ‘shocked’ by the position change he said; “I am kind of shocked.”  Of course he is! The last time he carried a football was before his senior high school prom! In fact, no other team expressed an interest in Miller playing fullback – Ya know why? He’s never even lined up in the backfield, run from scrimmage, gone through the line with the football or picked up a blitz but now he’s going to do it in the pros for the 49ers!

Shocked? I’m not.

Ever since Baalke has been here the 49ers have ignored drafting a big, bruising, Bar-None fullback that can run, catch and block.  Instead this regime has wasted almost a decade trying to convert washed-out waver-wire linebackers into fullbacks with zero success. We currently have one ancient fullback who has the speed of Aubrayo Franklin and hands of stone and now Baalke has used his next to last pick to try and convert yet another defensive player to fullback. I mean… Really…?

Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Well, I’m not crazy. Baalke needs to go.
