Niners Nation - my porn alternative

Hello NN, first post from a long time UK niner who's been enjoying the site since early 2010.  I just wanted to share a few random thoughts and then get your views on a few topics.  The questions may have been covered previously so apologies for bringing them up again - have to confess I don't read every single post.

1) Why the title of this post?  Well....since splitting up with my bird earlier this year I've had difficulty sleeping.  Obviously there are certain websites a man can use to help relax & unwind, however I have found NN to be an excellent substitute in this regard. There's nothing dodgy going on, its simply that after 30-40 mins of sleep deprivation I find myself drawn to my blackberry and the NN site.  Happily for me, after reading a couple of posts and digesting the comments I'm able to drift off contemplating the merits of keeping Nate Clements, wondering whether Alex can finally deliver, etc, etc...  So I just wanted to say tks to NN for the excellent insights, good quality banter and the money saved on sleeping pills.

2) In recent years, I have noticed an increased interest in the NFL amongst my UK friends and work colleagues and its clear the highly competitive and unpredictable nature of the game appeals to UK sports fans who enjoy proper competition.  UK football (soccer) will alway be my no. 1 sport, however the poor structure of our game fails to create competition, and is leading to increased apathy amongst fans outside of the rich clubs of which I am one.  For those interested I'm an Everton fan, and last time we won anything??.......the 1994/1995 season!

The dominance of a few select clubs in English football is a fact which most people are aware of, however the extent to which this is the case is still surprising.  Lets look at the number of winners of the current version of England's top football division (the Premier League) since its inception in 1992 and compare against the Superbowl:

                                No. of winners (19 seasons)

Premier League     4  (12 Man Utd, 3 Chelsea, 3 Arsenal, 1 Blackburn)
Superbowl             14

Personally, I'm getting bored being able to pick the top 4/5 positions and the bottom 3 with 90% success every year, knowing that league positioning is 70% correlated to transfer spending over the previous 5 years.  While the NFL is not perfect, its much more unpredictable and therefore exciting in my view.

3) Leading on from point 2, I think the NFL is currently in a sweet spot in terms of competition and general entertainment.  As a long time watcher, I feel recent years have been more more exciting vs. the 80s or 90s although obviously more painful where the niners are concerned.  While I'm no Florida Danny, I thought I'd look at some SB stats to see if this perception was fair.  Obviously this is just one game a year, however I found the numbers quite interesting...

Av Superbowl pts diff:    Total pts:    SBs decided by <=7pts

1970s:          11.3                     36.7                4
1980s:          21.9                     49.7                2
1990s:          14.2                     53.4                3
2000s:          8.6                       47.4                6

Now - a few questions for you where I hope some of you might help me out...

1. Mock drafts.  I dont mean to sound insulting, but I cannot understand the point of detailed mock drafts - this seems an almost impossible task given the many variables involved.  I realise I am pretty ignorant on this matter so I might be missing something, but can someone please give me some background - do fans compare their mocks with each other to see who does best?  Is there significant kudos for getting the top 10 right? (has anyone ever done this?)

2. Mike Mayock - is he God?  I've seen quite a bit of him over the past couple of years and while he talks a good game I don't understand why some people refer to his views as fact...

3. Pass rush.  I haven't got a view on the merits of taking Aldon Smith over Quinn or the Prince and while I know the stats on our rush defense vs pass defense, I was surprised to see we ranked joint 14th in sacks (not that bad I thought).  Now I realise we should consider other stats (e.g. strength of schedule, etc), however I'd be interested in people's view that maybe our pass rush is overly criticised? (its not a view, just a question)

4. 2011 draft 2nd round pick - I'm of the opinion that organisations need to look beyond the near-term and plan for the future.  Therefore, given the generally disparaging view about this year's QB class and the high opinion NN members seem to have of Andrew Luck and Kellen Moore, I was wondering if we had tried/considered trading our second round pick to Carolina for a 2012 first (they didn't have a 2nd round pick this year I believe?).  Given the possibility that they struggle again next season, this might have realised a high 1st round pick next year to help us possibly secure Luck or Moore.  Am I talking garbage....?  BTW - I side with those that have faith in better coaching being able improve the overall team and specifically our QBs.

I've probably rambled on too long so I'll finish up by wishing all of NN well and hoping we enjoy better fortunes going fwd.  Also, big tks to Fooch and the team for an excellent site - love the banter between drummer, lupati_like_its_1999, and all the regular posters.
