A Chop at Crabtree

Not a fan of Razzano.
Dude seems to have a personal vendetta against Alex Smith and believes Nate Davis is the next great QB in the NFL. He also loves to tweet about how much he loves his “rogue scout” label and seems to just vomit BS just to keep that title.

And to add to my post above
Razzano is always so quick to point out players that he said would bust, but I can’t find anything about him pointing players that would succeed. It’s easy to say this player will bust and claim credit about it years later when so few players succeed in the NFL. A good scout’s job is to find the gems and football successes, not sit there and hope players fail, then come out years later gloating about how right you were back then.

Usually I agree with Razzano.
Not here. As long as Crabtree is staying in shape, I have no problem with him. And again, we’re getting back into the “chemistry and team unity” BS that’s spewed from the media. The players likely have no idea what the plays are or terminology so it’s not like he’s missing out on learning. If you had watched the limited video on Niners-team practices, they’re not doing any installation of any kind. They’re really all just working out and throwing some passes around.
And btw….Where is the media and fans coming down on several notable players not being there, like Frank Gore or Vernon Davis? Seems like some double standard issues here.
You're not a 49er unless you got a gold star from Trent Baalke. Only "high character" guys get to play for the 49ers. The team is built in the locker room, as we all know.
The reason for bringing up crabtree and not gore and davis is that they are established players who already have shown chemestry with the qb and have played at a very high level. Crabtree probably wouldn’t be getting this criticism if he hadn’t held out his roockie year and then not played in preseason the next and then didn’t play well in the regular season. While you may be correct that being there now is overrated, I don’t see it as a double standard.

Good point, but this where I disagree with the criticism. I don’t blame Crabtree at all for his holdout, he’s a young kid who got some really bad advice by his agent, who tried to make Jed York look like a young moron but ultimately got owned.
The preseason stuff I’m really not sure of. Is there legitimate proof he was faking his injury? And if the team knew this, why wouldn’t Singletary force him to play in the pre season? I’m skeptical on the criticism of that as well.

for the record, I think you may be right about crabtree
I was just explaining why people feel the way they do. I was really impressed with his rookie season and equally disapointed with last season but I’m very hopeful now that we have a real coach.

What?
No idea what the plays are or terminology
Harbaugh gave Smith the playbook. Smith is running the practices. You don’t know what you are talking about.
True, True.......
The playbook will have the terminology in it and they are playing football….not hockey, so it is still the same types of routes but in different plays.
As for Razzano saying that he lacks high end speed….well, so did Jerry Rice and that didn’t stop him from being the G.O.A.T. The WCO doesn’t need the fastest WRs in the game.
by ericalancanty on May 30, 2011 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions
And that means Smith knows exactly what the terminology is?
You know this for fact? Smith has been in the WCO once, it was back in 2005 and it’s not a given that the terminology is quite the same. If you had been watching the practices they are just running routes, they are not doing installation of any kind.
I know exactly what I’m talking about, you’re the one hung up on your anti-Crabtree, Leadership-chemistry BS.
You're not a 49er unless you got a gold star from Trent Baalke. Only "high character" guys get to play for the 49ers. The team is built in the locker room, as we all know.
by BustaTheRippa on May 30, 2011 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions
In every playbook I've ever come across (I've even written a couple),
the terminology was in the first few pages. And the routes they are running are those FROM THE PLAYBOOK. Granted they are not “installing” as it would be done in OTAs, mini-camps and training camp under the guidance of their coaches, but I believe what they are doing in “just running routes” qualifies as “installation”.
So, I disagree with your “I know exactly what I’m talking about”…
As for others speculating about Crabtree in some way faking his injury during last summer’s training camp… I was in attendance at the practice during which he sustained his injury. I was horrified by the play, and I initially feared that the injury could be career-threatening. I don’t believe for a single moment that he was “faking it”. However, Crabtree’s lack of preseason his first two seasons was, IMHO, instrumental in his (considered by many to be) sub-par performances… although I blame extremely poor scheme and even worse play calling…
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
but I believe what they are doing in "just running routes" qualifies as "installation".
How? There is no set practice, there are no coaches explaining how the play should be run, it’s just a QB throwing to receivers from the route tree.
You're not a 49er unless you got a gold star from Trent Baalke. Only "high character" guys get to play for the 49ers. The team is built in the locker room, as we all know.

From what you are writing
I doubt you’ve ever seen the inside of a playbook.
Everything you need to know to run the play — the blocking scheme, the defensive keys, the coverage reads, the hot routes, the details of the alignment, the progression order, defensive body mechanics to watch, reminders to sell a fake, reminders on how long to hold a block, backfield blocking assignments, where the QB should place the ball — everything is there.
I doubt he’s being a mini-Harbaugh, but at the same time these guys aren’t just out there playing pitch and catch.
work ethic
From all I’ve heard coming out of college, work ethic was not an issue. Sounds to me like Razzano is spewing some kind of company line (not sure which company of course) when he mentions work ethic and is just making some assumptions.

Also, this
stating that he likes Rams mid-round rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas “a lot more than Crabtree.”
Is really asinine.
Perhaps I’m totally off on Pettis, but I had him as a 6th round talent who was extremely over drafted. He criticizes Crabtree’s speed, but not Pettis? Pettis was one of the slowest receivers in the draft, whose only really asset were his toughness and hands.
I liked Salas, but only as a slot receiver. Definitely think Crabtree is the better receiver than him.
Crabtree is indeed a 4.5-4.6 guy and certainly won’t run past many people, but I have seen enough of him to determine that he has the shiftiness, craftiness, and RAC ability that I’m quite confident he will develop into a 1B receiver( not a true #1, but a really solid receiver in the mold of a Don Driver or Boldin) PROVIDING Greg Roman dials up plays for him, keeps him involved and not bored, and has a QB who will throw the ball accurately and not checkdown 75% of the time.
You're not a 49er unless you got a gold star from Trent Baalke. Only "high character" guys get to play for the 49ers. The team is built in the locker room, as we all know.
The main thing that worries me about crabtree is how bad his hands were last year. But I do agree he has the tallent to be a pretty good reciever and I’m hoping that improved coaching will help with that.
by Andrew9erfan on May 30, 2011 5:02 AM PDT up reply actions
Valid concern....My theory, outlier year.
In 2009 he made some really fantastic grabs and showed some oven mitts, and he regressed in that department his 2nd year. Not sure why, but I do think overall he has good hands and that will improve.

Anquan Boldin ran a 4.71 at the combine and Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.63
Rice and Cris Carter were slow.
40 time speed is not FOOTBALL speed.
My problem with Crabs is not his speed, it’s all the dropped passes and deflections that result in INTs.

40 speed is pretty close to football speed
But for receivers, speed isn’t that important because the field is so small compared to how fast a professional athlete can run.
What is more important is creating separation from a defender by running a correctly timed precise route.
Give a 4.5 WR 3 yards of separation on a 4.4 CB and he can run for 90 yards before the 4.4 guy can catch him. Speed is so much more important at CB.
I got a couple things to say
1.) Razzano is dumb. There is a reason he is an ex-scout not a pro-scout.
2.) I feel that Crabtree gets an unfair rap but I also believe that there is a chemistry that is necessary for QBs and WRs. Throwing to a WR can teach the QB exactly where to throw the ball to and give the WR a little advantage as to where to expect the ball.

Razzano has some good things to say
this (I hope) is just not one of them. I like Nate Davis and thought he would have been better then Alex Smith, but I am not sure he worked hard enough (or couldn’t learn fast enough) to stay in the NFL and natural talent only gets you so far. I remember up until his last two games Nate Davis was being talked about as a 1st round draft pick. It is easy to like a player who was at one time looked at as a 1st when you get him for “great value” in the 5th. As much as I detest seeing Alex Smith behind center I think he comes in prepared and works hard. He just doesn’t get it done. Nate may have been able to get it done but he didn’t prepare well enough to play or even make the squad last year.
Crabtree was always talked about as a football player and a hard worker and really if you watched him the last year in college he man handled Texas and they had a lot of professionals in their secondary. Every team knew Crabtree would get the ball and they could not cover him. He can be good if he works hard but really he is a player in a lockout, we may think he should move from his home in Texas to the Bay Area but really if he gets hurt he gets cut if the 49ers so choose. He is a professional football player and since he does not live here and is not getting paid to be here why do it? Why risk being able to get paid when the NFL owners are basically telling you not to work out by not allowing you to enter team facilities? It looks good for the media and fans for football players to work out, but let some star player get a serious injury in practice and see how that goes over. And really if they are not practicing that hard to begin with where injury is an issue, then they really are just hanging out throwing a football with some friends.

He just looked like he had potential to be really good. Does he start he can really throw the ball!”
Sing may have not liked him, but if he makes it to a team I would not be shocked to see him do well. With that said I am happy with our new #7

what is a bust?
how many receivers come into the league and have 1,000 yard seasons?
his first year he did not play a full season and last year the whole offense was horrible; crabtree had the most receiving yards for the niners of all wide receivers(Vernon Davis is not a wide receiver)
while crabtree has not met the lofty expectations some may have had, crabtree is far from being a bust.

Looks to me like Crabtree
has enough speed, quickness, moves, athleticism and competitiveness to be a number one receiver in his league. Unfortunately, chemistry and understanding the playbook is what he lacks. Now that there’s a new playbook to learn, he gets a fresh slate but can be compared to other prospects. If he doesn’t develop that chemistry better than his competition, for whatever reason(s), he and his contract will be disposed of properly.

I don’t know if there is an article about it, but I highly doubt Rice didn’t catch passes from his QB’s when he got 22 TD’s in 12 games, I am sure he had plenty of reps in the offense during that work stoppage.
