Golden Nuggets: Restricting Your Poll Options and Silencing Your Voice One Post at a Time

So for some reason, I forgot to add 'F' into the poll option on the Arizona Cardinals draft grades post yesterday, but I really don't see a way anybody can consider it an 'F' anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter. In other news, I've decided to change my name on Niners Nation to "James Brady," with "Ninjames" in parenthesis. You guys can still call me Ninjames, in fact, that's what I prefer when it all comes down to it, but you know how it is ... or maybe you don't. Either way, that's how it is! Also, I'd like to get some input from you folks regarding the start time. Would anybody like the Nuggets to go up at 2:00 a.m. pacific instead of the normal start time of 3:00 a.m.? Just checking what you guys think. Anyway, on to the links, folks.

I stopped following the NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2011 list because it lists running back Frank Gore at number 94. Apparently, Gore is only a hair better than Darren McFadden, which really ... it's insulting, despite McFadden's emergence last season. (49ers.com)

Maiocco took a crack at what the depth chart looks like for the 49ers. I think he makes good points when he lists Johnson ahead of Williams ... I would not be adverse to Ted Ginn Jr. being out of the receiver rotation entirely, honestly. Unless Harbaugh can actually use him correctly, I have no idea why Ginn was looked too in so many short yardage situations on third down. I know I'm a big Dominique Zeigler mark, but if there's ever a situation to use him ... well, that's the one. (CSNBayArea.com)

Trent Dilfer is essentially in agreement with me on all fronts (because he obviously reads Niners Nation before going on air), in that the Seahawks made a lot of mistakes in their draft, while the 49ers only got better. (PressDemocrat.com)

Star-divide

The "official" times and dates for the 49ers preseason games were announced by the team recently. Forgive me if I'm pessimistic, but I'm still in the camp that believes football will take a hit this year. (49ers.com)

It looks like the team may be interested in signing David Mims, a 6'8'' offensive lineman. Woah. Alex Boone, eat your heart out.  (PressDemocrat.com)

Apparently, the 49ers were in on multiple trade attempts in regards to landing Colin Kaepernick. (Yahoo.com)

Where do all of these players fit in next season? I personally think Aldon Smith will be able to start from day one, but that's early speculation, and I fully admit I might just be being hopeful. (SacBee.com)

Here's Maiocco's latest mailbag post. (CSNBayArea.com)

Nuggets

The earlier the better. A 2:00 a.m. pacific time would let me bring my coffee break forward by an hour and it would allow you, Mr Brady, to get to your bed earlier!

Earlier is good.

I’m in New Mexico so its nice get the Nuggets at 3 when I’m up, which is pretty often. If its convenient for you of course. I appreciate what you do so I’m not going to complain.

The hundred best thing is for this year and this year only

I think McFadden is actually better than Gore at this point and Gore is lucky to even be on that list.

There is no way that McFadden is better than Gore. That’s really all I’m going to say regarding this.

kind of true

Gore rushed for 850 last year at 4.2, McFadden 1150 at 5.2

Gore is 27 turning 28 in a couple days
McFadden is 23 turning 24 in August.

Who would you rather have in 2011? Probably McFadden.

I love Gore, but fans completely over-value him as a player, running back just isn’t a value position. The top 20 at this point all play at about the same level with certain strengths and weaknesses.

by whistlingmountain on May 4, 2011 4:49 AM PDT up reply actions

In 2011? I'd much rather have Gore, especially in this offense.

Maybe if McFadden can have another good season first, then who knows …

homer test

Gore vs Rice
Gore vs Chris Johnson
Gore vs Peterson
Gore vs Foster
Gore vs Jones-Drew
Gore vs Jackson
Gore vs Blount
Gore vs McFadden

where would you rank Gore in the running backs in the league? I think if you just polled 49er fans they’d say he’s a top 5 back. I’d say there are about 20 top 5 backs in the league. He’s very good and we love him because the offense has been largely inept. I don’t think that there would be a drop off if you replaced him with any of those guys up there.

With the way some fans speak of him you’d think he was a dominant back that has set himself apart from other backs, but 21st in yards, 25th in ypc in 2010. 11th in yards, 13th in ypc in 2009, 13th in yards, 16th in yards per carry in 2008, 13th in yards, 23rd in yards per carry in 2007.

those are his years following his breakout year in 2006. He has not finished in the top 10 in either of the 2 major categories for running backs. He’s had 22 fumbles in 5 years. Is that elite? Running against 8 in the box doesn’t seem to prevent other elite backs from getting into the top 10 at least once in 4 years. And how about the garbage carries he has picked up against soft defenses with big leads?

He’s simply not an elite running back, he’s a very good running back. He happens to be OUR very good running back, so we love him and rightfully so.

by whistlingmountain on May 4, 2011 7:19 AM PDT up reply actions

And this is why I said I didn't want to speak further on this.

We’d have some guy calling me a homer, when the people who pay attention know that homerism pisses me off more than anything else! But honestly ..

Gore > McFadden, Blount. Push with Jackson, Rice. That’s just how I see it.

Arian Foster was an undrafted free agent

Which means according to half the people who post comments around here about draft grades, he sucks.

However, wow what a season he had last year. I unfortunatly got “stuck” with him as my second back on my free fantasy football team I had just for fun to see how the 49ers did against fantasy teams.

Long story short I drafted all 49ers, and Arian Foster and still made the playoffs just because of Arian Foster and Frank Gore. I love how they give you two running backs.

Stat wise the guy was a machine, didn’t watch him play much, but he had to be doing something right.

Wait a minute,

Now I wish I watched those Raider games closer, McFadden was impressive, in a couple. But did he rush against 8+ guys in the box? Because rushing head on into 8+ and getting 850 yards in a season where you missed the last, what was it 3,4 games? Frank Gore isn’t old yet, He’ll be back strong next year and better than ever.

There is no over valuing Frank Gore, he’s good enough you can build an entire offense around the theory that you can run the same exact play 20 times in a row and no one can stop you. It doesn’t work good enough to win games, but Frank still got some good runs out of it, you have to be impressed with his abilities.

I do like McFadden’s skills, so I can’t bring myself to talk trash about him, even though half the Raiders roster choices baffle me, once in a while they get lucky with a guy like McFadden.

I said the game plan doesn’t work well

My point is Gore would be alot more productive given a better OC

by Pat Willie on May 4, 2011 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

ah, misread sorry.

yes, not running the same play would help, but Gore has had several offensive coordinators, his stats have remained about the same in the 10th-15th range.

Do you really foresee him ever being in the top 5 rushing yards or yards per carry again in his career?

by whistlingmountain on May 4, 2011 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Why not?

Give him a passing threat to keep the D guessing a little at least and it might soften up some areas. He’s still got three years left in him and he hasn’t slowed down yet. it’s not him hurting his stats as much as complete lack of imagination or strategy from his OC.

All these other guys you listed are good running backs too though, so I can’t refute you too hard, but give the Gore lovers a break, he has pretty impressive wheels.

Agreed
I love Gore, but fans completely over-value him as a player, running back just isn’t a value position. The top 20 at this point all play at about the same level with certain strengths and weaknesses.

Not only that, Gore’s a boom-bust running back, which is less valuable than one who consistently gains small yardage.

by Bigmouth on May 4, 2011 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions

boom bust?

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on May 4, 2011 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

He's inconsistent

He either breaks a long run (boom) or gets stopped for little to no gain (bust). Research shows that inconsistent RBs like Gore are less valuable than guys who don’t make long runs but consistently gain short yardage. Florida Danny had a great analysis making this point a year or two back.

by Bigmouth on May 4, 2011 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Okay...

…but I’m talking about his runs specifically. And it’s a fact that Gore tends to either get stuffed or break the long run. In that sense, he’s inconsistent and less valuable than a RB who averages the same Yards Per Carry by consistently gaining the same amount every time.

by Bigmouth on May 5, 2011 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I think this, if true (I don't see it), has more to do

with him being the focus of the offense. In turn, he becomes the focus for the defense. Every teams #1 priority for the last 5 years has been to stop Gore. Load the box and your either going to get tackled for a loss or short yardage, or your going to break through the second level for a big gain.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on May 5, 2011 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions

It's true...

…you can check the numbers if you don’t believe me. He’s the type of guy who will have several 100+ yard games along with several games of less than 50 in the same season. But you make a good point that this probably has a lot to do with teams focusing on stopping him.

by Bigmouth on May 5, 2011 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

McFadden is a one trick pony

he has ZERO lateral agility. He’s a straight line speedster.

Gore is an every down back, who lines up anywhere, including split wide. When’s the last time McFadden ran a route? Gore is one of the most versatile backs in the league.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on May 4, 2011 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

this

plus nobody is a better pass protector than Gore and if you think that’s a minor thing, talk to an OC or HC sometime (or a QB). Gore has been amongst the top players in yards from scrimmage over the past 4-5 years, despite injuries. He was our entire offense for years and still managed to churn out 1,000 yard rushing seasons despite everyone knowing it was coming.

Wow Frank Gore is #94?

So out of 32 teams they figure our best offensive player to be # 94. Our offense was pretty bad but not that bad. 94 Suggests that every team has an average of approx. three, I repeat 3, players that are better than Frank Gore.

Needless to say I won’t be wasting my time watching that kind of nonsense.

Iupati played at a near ProBowl level according to several who are smarter than both of us

Chilo is the one Baas couldn’t help but really, who could? Chilo played better at times but in pass protection he and Davis were dumb and dumber often times. Baas played well absent a few airmail snaps. The guy hadn’t played Center in years yet he held it down.

Pass blocking was our bane and playcalling didn’t help it. I think Chilo and Davis were the only real weak links and Davis I’m banking will be much better this year.

I just Twitter'd that

by Tre9er on May 4, 2011 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much this

I saw somewhere that Iupati graded out to the 5th best guard in the league last year. That’s with a guy who hasn’t played center in years next to him. Baas made a quantum leap in his blocking ability last year and would be an instant upgrade over Rachel at RG… But he was not a top notch center because he was not very good at directing protection. Though Rachel and Davis likely did make his life much more difficult. Our line could be fantastic this year if Heitmann comes back 100% and we’re free to move Baas to RG.
