If Manny Lawson wants too much... Do we let him walk and bring back Julian Peterson???
Maybe I'm a little late on this news, but apparently the Lions are not bringing back Julian Peterson this year. As for why I have no idea. Last year was another solid year for JP, racking up 83 ToT, 6 Pass Defenses, and 1 sack. Certainly not his best year but honestly its better than any Manny Lawson has ever had! As recently as 06 and 07 in Seattle JP racked up 10 and 9.5 sacks...
Here is some career statistical comparison between the two for perspective
First Manny Lawson
| YEAR | TEAM | G | TOT | SOLO | AST | PD | SACK | FF | REC | INT | YDS | TD |

To make it as relevant as possible
Let us focus on under-achiever Manny's best season in 09. Manny made 68 tackles, had 2 PD's, 6.5 sacks and 3 FF's against JP's 2009 season of 76 tackles, 4 PD's, and 4.5 sacks with 5 FF's and 1 recovered. Unless JP has absolutely fallen off a cliff I believe we could be looking at a significant upgrade bringing Peterson back and letting Manny walk. Not only that, Julian would be an excellent, fantastic, wonderful player to bring in to help mentor and develop Aldon Smith and show him how to be a leader on the field.
I've made the case - what do you think?

Peterson

He may not have fallen off a cliff, but I think he’s tailing off. It’s a tough comparison when the team would likely be bringing in Peterson on a one year deal and looking at Lawson for a four or five year deal (assuming they’re actually looking to bring him back). I wouldn’t give Peterson any more than a one year deal.
I was thinking 2-3
People thought Takeo was done when he came to SF. Peterson was a pro bowl alternate only 2 years ago. I’m pretty sure he’s got another couple years. He doesn’t have any health problems and I’d rather have 3 years of a guy averaging 70 tackles and 4 – 5 sacks than 5 years of averaging 55 and 2 sacks.

one difference
Spikes had some injury issues in the couple years before he signed with the 49ers that had people skittish. Julian Peterson has missed one game since leaving the 49ers. I just think Peterson’s current decline is from getting older. I just don’t think he’s going to average what you think he’ll average.

I think his numbers would improve drastically to be honest
I checked the reason the Lions cut him. The contract they gave him is ridiculous. He was set to make 16.5 million over the next 2 years. He’d have to be one 5 best OLBs in the league to warrant that. He’s not top 10 in the league but he is 10 years into his career and he hasn’t had injury problems. His numbers dropped when we went from a good team to a horrible team. That tends to happen with any good player. He would be coming back to a good, contending team from a team that until last year had absolutely nothing in front of him.
Our front 7 would read like this
JP.. .. .. Takeo.. . .. Willis.. .. .. A.Smith
..J.Smith.. .. Franklin.. ..Soap
JP.. .. .. Takeo.. . .. Willis.. .. .. A.Smith
..J.Smith.. .. Franklin.. ..SoapI don’t know see any way that adding somebody that has consistently rushed the passer, covered TE’s and racked up tackles ALL better than Manny Lawson isn’t a coup for us. We’d actually have not just 1 but 2, (2!!!!), OLBs that can bring pressure.

Lawson had 6.5 Sacks this year
We need to bring lawson back I will explain first off fangio defense is way more aggressive than. Manuskys stupid bend but dont break crap Vic D will be alot like green bays the thing with lawson is always kinda held down cause we didnt blitzs him and Haralson teams know is no threat so they can focus on lawson besides no denying lawson can stop the run and cover very well so a Lawson Aldon core would be much better core than aldon harralson because if aldon becomes what the coaching staff thinks he can than thats perfect because aldon becomes the pass rusher and you can put Lawson on the TE think about it with no lawson than aldon has to cover so again he wont get alot of sacks the real problem here is harlson and any niner fan should be able to regonize that harlson cant rush passer cant cover he can stop run that it so we go with him and aldon than we our in same boat as now aldon will have to cover and only get a few actually blitzs cause harlson is so bad at coverage

I agree 100% with you. people focus on lawson because he was a first round draft pick.

And just FYI
Lawson had 2.5 sacks this year. He had 6.5 in ’09.
Why do people think this is 2009? I just had someone on twitter trying to tell me Spencer was good and Clements sucked bad last year.

sacks are only half of the story and there is much more being olb than getting sacks.
parys haralson played very often downs 1-3 and get 4 total sacks with much more attempts than lawson
manny lawson played downs very often, got a total of 3 sacks last year with less attempts than parys, and manny beat him in tackles, pd’s, ff, and int’s.
will manny lawson every be lamarr woodley? probably not; but I much rather have manny lawson on the niners than parys.

No I'm in the "bring Manny back" camp
But just trying to correct whatever that guy above posted.

oh
he had less than 6.5 last year.

I'd go with Julian Peterson
in a heartbeat, especially if money won’t be a problem. Aldon Smith might have been drafted to eventually replace Lawson anyways, so why not have Peterson playing and mentoring him. Lawson won’t even have the advantage of knowing the system, since it’ll all be new to everyone. It’ll an upgrade to Aldon Smith’s learning curve.
My only real problem with the idea
is that I don’t expect us to contend this year, so I would rather just roll out the youth movement and let Aldon, Gibson, etc. improve for next year and beyond.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I think their chances of improving
are much better when they are playing with a pro-bowl linebacker. The level of competition would be that much higher.
Possible
but I would bet they improve more on the field than watching Julian Peterson play.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Smith would be on the field
Or 3-4 would have JP strongside on the TE and Aldon Weakside

has Julian Peterson ever played in a 34 defense?

A fair point but he's bulkier than Lawson. So size isn't necessarily a problem
and Peterson has never lacked for talent or natural ability. I think he’d thrive.

No thanks
Every aging veteran you bring in takes playing time away from one of our young guys and slows their development.
I'd bring back Lawson, he isn't going to a heaping amount of free agency cash. Teams are going to tighten their wallets.

Yeah I said it, Craptree, and it is not a typo.....
Kaepernick is the lone quarterback in Division I history to pass for over 10,000 career yards and also rush for 4,000 yards.
Lawson
I would only bring him back if he were to accept 5M or less per year, for his run defense. If more, than sayonara for the 4-3 “coverage” linebacker
You're not a 49er unless you got a gold star from Trent Baalke. Only "high character" guys get to play for the 49ers. The team is built in the locker room, as we all know.
My top dollar - 20 million 4 year contract if CPA rules are the same, spread out as follows:
4 million signing bonus
4 million (1 million a year) in incentive bonuses (only paid if incentives are met)
Base salary: year one: 2 million
year two: 2.5 million
year three: 3.5 million
year four: 4 million
there is nothing wrong with Manny
He consistently puts pressure on the qb, but doesnt always get a sack. Big whoop. As long as the disruption is there, thats all that really matters. We’d be foolish to let him go.

And I want to see him operate under different coaches. Peterson would be a brief upgrade. I see Lawson as a long term player. Besides that, for the money we would spend on Peterson, we should be picking up an elite DB.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
Its very possible they could be looking at similar contracts
Manny might want even more.

ok,
now that’s absurd. While I think he could put up the numbers given a chance, he sure as heck hasn’t yet. If someone else is willing to pay him that much, let him go. At this point in his career he has to prove he’s worth the money.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
Are you assuming Peterson will get a big contract?
I’m not sure he will.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I see a lot of teams going after him
And free agents are always expensive. If Peterson and Lawson are the same price, it seems foolish not to go with Peterson. I would love to see Lawson sign a one or two year deal, and actually perform. THEN we can fork out more money. I think Peterson will be more expensive than Lawson, and I don’t think it is worth the price difference.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
Peterson has definitely declined with age...
I say we bring back Charles Haley…

Compare their first 5 years to each other.
Peterson wasn’t much better if at all. I personally think it’s a horrible idea.
Look at their pass defended number
Peterson was significantly better in coverage to start and had significantly more tackles AND was just as good a pass rusher despite being our star linebacker, not the #2.

lol
any linebacker with patrick willis on his side will have significantly less tackles, HAH.
But should also put up a ton more sacks or PD's
Lawson has really accomplished nothing here while being a #2-#3 Linebacker. 2 years ago Ahmad Brooks was more impressive in limited action. He is very close to being a bust.

How the hell did Parys get a contract extension before Patrick and Manny?
And how much is too much money for Manny? I figure we aren’t the ones paying for Manny’s salary, so wheres the frugal mindset coming from? Trying to save the Yorks some cash? Just kidding but forreals, what is everyone’s ideal salary for Manny, besides the vague “just not too much” answer.

As a Lions fan
I find this discussion really interesting! I came over to get a read on how y’all thought of Lawson. I never expected this!
This could actually be a pretty good place for JP to come in and play or at least mentor. The only problem is if his spirit down like it came to be in Det it wouldn’t be so great. While he was active he also took himself out of plays more and more. It seemed to me that he got frustrated in our system. He likely longed to be able to pass rush again
I think Lawson is a helluva player, but as JP was with us, he’s just not in the right setting for him. I can’t tell you how much many of us Lions fans over on PoD are hoping Lawson either walks or we’re able to work out a trade for him.
One thing I’m curious about is let’s say Lawson walks, who do you think the starting LB core would be? Or if he walks is it pretty much a given some new talent must be brought in?
Individuals should protect themselves. Governments can't protect individuals from themselves, it's just impossible, otherwise they become a tyranical state. -Ron Paul
If Lawson walks
Insert LB here.. .. .. .. .. Spikes.. .. .. P Willis.. .. .. .. .. A. Smith
.. .. .. .. .. J.Smith.. .. .. .. Franklin/Soap.. .. .. Soap/RJF
Franklin is gonna want a big contract, so no guarantee we can bring him back even if we don’t resign Lawson. If Franklin walks I think we definitely find a free agent to replace Lawson. If we pay him big bucks we’ll have to move Haralson over to Manny’s slot. Haralson is serviceable but he’ll never be a standout starter. Would be a great backup though to JP.
