Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Does Colin Kaepernick look like a West Coast quarterback? National Football Post doubts it, but Coach Harbaugh says, "He’s a football player, first and foremost. That’s what you look for from any player." Will Harbaugh compete with Singletary for most indecipherable football platitudes?

Niners offense probably not going to be your basic WCO. Especially with a strong armed QBOTF like Kaepernick and the speed the Niners have at receiver.

How many months later

People still believe Harbaugh runs a WCO. He uses WCO terminology, it’s been stated over and over and over again.

He did order copies of 49er practices of the past and IS taking plays and terminology from them.

He is reinstalling Walsh’s system and throwing in his own little flavor along with it.

I would say integrated, not outdated

Everyone fuses it with their offense running some WCO plays.

Harbaugh’s offense looks closest to Shanahan’s offense with an heavy emphasis on power run and QB boot plays. Still, its probably the least familiar branch to the Walsh WCO tree. The only part that looks like Walsh’s offense is the WR patterns.

Still I get your sentiment. Harbaugh trying to the run Walsh’s ‘80s based WCO is just as insane as Singletary’s attempt to recreate the ’86 Bears. Offenses today are so much more complex.

my opinion

look at luck and johnson

all are very fast and athletic quarterbacks who can scramble quite well. harbaugh has mentioned that one of the things that he liked about kaepernick is that he can gun a pass into tight area. kaepernick has one of the strongest arms if not the strongest arm in this draft.

WCO

The WCO was birthed out of the concept of tying routes to the QBs drop — i.e. his feet. Drop back 3-steps, plant and throw…or read1, read2, read3 and throw. The guy on the 3rd read will be at his sweet spot at the timing of the 3rd read. That’s why the WCO is based on timing. That doesn’t mean they are all WCO, but EVERY team in the NFL uses elements of WCO.

Harbaugh gave A. Smith some of Steve Youngs film to watch, so yeah – expect to see some of the 95 49ers WCO in the mix.

Kaepernick as a WCO QB

In regards to Kaepernick not looking like a WCO QB that’s just silly. Steve Young looked nothing like Montana. Both styles worked. The base coveted qualities of a WCO QB are accuracy and read progression. Must also have good footwork, and timing on throws — which goes without saying. And while a strong arm isn’t directly rewarded, Montana and Young were both known to have success with the 45-55 yard fling on the post route off of play action every game. Kaepernick will be well served will to have that in his bag of tricks too.
