Eric Branch Leaving Santa Rosa Press Democrat
I thought it was worth sharing that Eric Branch just announced he is leaving the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and thus will no longer be covering the 49ers. Let me clarify. He mentioned resurfacing at another publication in the near future so he might be covering the 49ers, but he hasn't specified his next stop yet. I shot him a tweet about it so we'll see what he has to say.
Branch replaced Phil Barber who had briefly replaced Matt Maiocco when MM left for CSN Bay Area. Maiocco has been the big name among 49ers beat writers but Branch did some really impressive work when he took over the beat writer/blogging work at the Press Democrat. He, Maiocco, and Barrows all have differing personalities when it comes to how they cover the team. They all do a phenomenal job so it certainly hurts to lose a quality guy.
One interesting note from Branch's final post was the quality of writers that have come through the 49ers beat at the Press Democrat. Among others, Mike Silver (Sports Illustrated, Yahoo!), Mark Fainaru-Wada (ESPN), Brian Murphy (KNBR), Kevin Lynch (San Francisco Chronicle) and Matt Maiocco (CSN Bay Area) all came through the PD. That's quite the who's who of interesting talent.
Best of luck to Eric in the future.

Eric definitely had the best writing style, the best kind of “blogger”. I don’t know that he always gave the most information, because he probably didn’t have the access, but his style of writing and angles were second to none in regards to the 49er beat.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja

I have to admit
I never read a single one of his articles/blogs.
(I was soured when Maiocco left and read only Barrows).
But now I really regret it…hope he keeps covering the 49ers so I can give it another shot.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Niners,Nets,Reds & USC!!!
"We'll be the first really global team in the NBA. For me, being the first foreign owner, I want to do my best to invite all the fans for the team all over the world. I think the NBA is worldwide. But other teams [possess a] more local mentality. We are going to create and to build a global franchise to sell all around the world. I think I have a competitive advantage compared to other owners." - Mikhail Prokhorov
sorry, never really read his stuff.

his piece on Tomsula was excellent, as were some others recently
he was really good at the newspaper story, the longer, actual stories.
The NFL/Players are dragging me down. Sad thing is: they know I'll always keep coming back.
I just Twitter'd that
Couldn't read much Eric Branch because I missed Phil Barber too much
In some of Phil’s articles, he wrote about the 49ers as if they were a joke. Which is difficult to argue against with our unique way of doing things.
49er fanhood up in the air with Kaepernick aboard and there not being an QB worth rooting for on the niner roster
I loved reading Eric Branch
Of Maiocco, Barrows and Branch, Eric was the best writer in my opinion. I’ll miss reading his stuff.

Just a thought...
This is my final blog for The Santa Rosa Press Democrat. I will resurface at another publication in the near future.
As for me, hopefully this isn’t goodbye, but it’s see you in the future.
And, hopefully, we’ll be discussing the impending start of football — on the field — when we meet again.
That makes it sound like he’s going to keep covering the 49ers. One newspaper that doesn’t currently have a 49ers beat reporter? The San Francisco Chronicle — David White left to become a preacher.
Just a thought. But that would be a huge get for the Chronicle. I think Branch is one of the better writers in covering football.
Chronicle
Doesn’t Kevin Lynch cover the 49ers for the Chronicle too?

Lynch's blog has had two people writing for it at one time before.

plus Lynchy never seemed to be a constant blogger, not like we've come to expect

He's with SFGate...
If you look at his byline in the Chronicle’s print edition, it’s “Special to the Chronicle,” which means for book keeping purposes he’s either contracted with SFGate (the Chronicle’s website) or working freelance full-time for the Chronicle.
They’ve always had a full-time staff writer (designated in the paper – ‘Chronicle Staff Writer’) covering the 49ers. David White just left and before that I think it was Nancy Gay and before that, I think it was Ira Miller. Tom FitzGerald (who usually covers Cal Football) has covered the gaps at times.
I talked with Eric on Wednesday about his future and where he'll end up next
Don’t you guys worry about him one bit. You’ll know in time what’s in store for him.

Hoping for the best
I really think that with Branch, Maiocco, Sando, and Barrows we have really great writers covering the Niners. I hope he keeps covering the Niners because it’s one of the few things I care enough about to read on a regular basis.
What I find interesting is that, in the age of Twitter, I tend not to even notice which companies these guys work for. Before Twitter, which really isn’t that long ago, you had to go to the Press Democrat website, or the Chron website, or whatever, to read these guys, but now, you may not even have noticed Maiocco had moved organisations if you follow him on Twitter, unless you happened to notice the new screenname or clicked any of his links.
Personally, I like Barrows the best out of all of them. And I know he works for the Sac Bee, but if he moved elsewhere, I wouldn’t care, as long as his reporting on Twitter remained as good. Twitter and the Nuggets are all you need to keep on top of Niners news, although anyone using Google+ should know there is a section called ‘sparks’ where you put in areas of interest, and if you put in 49ers, it delivers a river of Niners news into your Google+ homepage, presumably from Google News aggregators.
Eric Branch is best
for his stories on the personal lives of the players and coaches. His writing skills are excellent in spinning a story that draws you in and gives you the feeling of a deeper connection to the team. That is his gift, being the color guy of print reporting.
