E3 2011: Madden NFL 12 Trailer Revealed, Thoughts?
One thing that remains a constant for me whether I like it or not is the Madden NFL series of games. I say "whether I like it or not" because there's times when I feel like the game isn't as good as promised, or even close. Sometimes, it feels like they didn't even try. I hate to say that a game that is developed for months out of the year that, surely, individuals worked hard on, suffers from a lack of effort, so perhaps I'll go with "lack of vision." Maybe the games aren't consistently great because there's no competition, who knows?
All I know is ... time and time again, I go out at midnight on release day and I buy the game and play as the rookies. I'll start a franchise and trade for all the guys I wish the 49ers had drafted. I just cannot stop playing the Madden games at all. I'll never be able to, unless EA loses the NFL license and another competitor comes forward with a better product. That'd be the only way.
For Madden NFL 10 and Madden NFL 11, I didn't really buy into the hype. Of course, I did buy the game, but before it came out, I was only excited about one or two things and was sort of lukewarm otherwise. Well, 11 turned out to be better than I expected, but there were still a lot of issues. With Madden NFL 12, I am legitimately excited for the first time in years. There's a ton about it that I know I will like, things that EA really can't lie about at this point. If you want to talk about what specifically I like and what not, go ahead and ask in the comments.
Until then, make the jump and check out this trailer that EA debuted at E3 yesterday. Pretty cool stuff, though I was definitely hoping for more.

11 was the first year of all the years I didn't buy the game. Not even used.
I hate bringing up the whole 2k5 thing….But the broadcasting presentation is still light years ahead of what madden has been doing. Remember the “extra point” show on Madden 10. AWFUL!!!! The replays and camera cuts in 2k5 look like a REAL BROADCAST. Presentation means sooooo much when you are trying to simulate what’s in the game. As far as gameplay… don’t even get me started.
That game is severely overrated but it was still a very good game.
Either way, Madden 10 is the one you should have skipped. Since 2005 …
2007 > 2005 > 2010 > 2006 > 2008 > 2010 >>>> 2009

Yet madden has been so bad that it makes it (2k5) so relevant.
To be honest, a year off has been tough w/o a football game. This is the most I’ve been excited about Madden since 06,and we know how that turned out. I want to see how well they fixed the physics and the AI on this game.
Well, I’ll be trying it out before it’s released, so stay tuned.

What specifically do you like about it?
What I always hate is the over said commentary and same intro’s every time? Like in the begining they always give the QB matchup and say “these guys have lots of experience and been through it all” even though its Sam Bradford vs. Mark Sanchez.
I will still buy the game in a heartbeat and play all the time, but why do you like this one better?
Couple things
1. For one, I play franchise mode above all-else. I’ve wanted a more expanded franchise mode, and they’ve given us some facts about it: expanded rosters and actual, factual dynamic player performance being the two big factors. I love that there’s training camps, cut days, and maybe even practice squads. Injured reserve also works as it should.
2. For two, the new group of animations do look good. That’s always the big thing … how close can they get certain things? One game, the o-line play will be good, but defensive backs will be stupid and broken. Or maybe they’ll put in a certain gimmick wide receiver catch and it breaks the game. This time, I do like a lot of the animations
3. They seem to be getting closer and closer to getting their presentation on point. Need, need, need presentation.

I heard about the dynamic player performance, that sounds cool. What is the expanded rosters though? Is that like having the training camps, cut days, and stuff?
Also, have you heard anything about updated commentary? Because that is one of my biggest annoyances with madden.
Expanded rosters
Before the roster limit was 55, I believe. That caused IR to be all screwed up. This year it is 75. So IR will work, hopefully. It also means more players you can sign in the preseason. And hopefully it means practice squads.

I just wish...
EA could be half as innovative with Madden each year as they are with FIFA. Truly one of the best sports simulations around…Apples and oranges a bit, but still.
I still have played every single Madden, the last few years especially, but a lot of work could be done. The problem is the yearly development cycle, the developers are somewhat limited in what they can do. Unfortunately skipping a year isn’t really an option.
I just think they need a little more guidance.
The development cycle is proven and works with other games. They just have no motivation to make Madden that much better. But there were a lot of changes with the teams right after Madden NFL 11 was finished, and we might see those changes reflected in this game.

Yea I agree with the lack a vision/guidance point.
I would almost like to see them take a COD approach, (thoughts on that franchise are for a different time), but just the development cycles they use with two different development teams on offset 2 year cycles could be better. Then again the variation between the Madden games every year could be too noticeable for it to be feasible.
What they really need that would push it over the top, is a real-time physics engine, such as what the NHL games use. It is a lot more difficult to pull off in football with 22 players on the field, but it would make a huge difference in gameplay. We wouldn’t be watching the same scripted animations, which get old after a while. For example, when you know from the same tired animation that you are about to get a face mask penalty…
Well, I can understand what you mean regarding their development cycles and CoD
But they won’t be the best example in the future, seeing as how they wiped out one of their teams because they didn’t want to pay them (and they were responsible for bringing the company hundreds of millions of dollars) and now the new game is going to be a freakish effort worked on by THREE different developers.

Certainly
I know it wasn’t a great example, at least not anymore, but it served my point on development cycles.
And Activision are not shy about their greediness and lack of scruples, EA isn’t quite that bad…yet.
Btw, I’ve always been more into Battlefield anyhow :).
I think this year they may have paid somewhat of an ear to the hardcore madden community.
I just wish another dev team (within EA Sports) could give it a shot.
I personally like Pro Evolution Soccer over the FIFA series, but that might just be a personal preference.
I played both FIFA 11 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, and PES 2011 just plays better in my opinion. Sure, you don’t get all the real team and player names, but in terms of gameplay, I really enjoy PES more.

Revenge is ice cream.
I understand, I actually don't mind PES.
With most people I feel it is very polarizing, you either like one or the other. They are both different takes on the same sport. I feel a bit more realism with FIFA (partly because of licensing), but the gameplay feels more fluid/realistic. Although FIFA can get a bit arcade-y at times, PES makes you really have to build up to your scoring opportunites, in that sense it feels to be the more realistic.
I actually still enjoy both. You just have to accept they are different games, and try to go into either with an open mind. They both have their strengths.
I actually preferred FIFA 10 over PES 2010.
So, to me, I tend to fluctuate until each series for the game I prefer more, ie, I find PES more fluid than FIFA in the 2011 year, but again, that’s on Windows.

I liked NHL 10
The announcers were good and the gameplay was good too.

where to begin
first off, I’ve always wondered why people care about the sports center type broadcasts and espn stuff that 2k5 had? I loved 2k5 but all that crap just gets in the way of playing the game. who are you people that actually watch that stuff? it bears no impact on game play. seriously, when it comes on, all i do is push the button to speed through it to actually start the game again. I wonder if it actually slows the game down (or does it give the game time to load for further game play?)
For game play, one nice thing in Madden 10 is gang tackling. I did not like that they took out the acceleration button because playing running back and running routes is more than just about pure speed, it’s about when to kick on the speed and gain a step on the defender. Computer AI. If you establish the outside run game with an offset I formation the computer will freak out and start to frequently send double corner blitzes. with some manipulation of motion you can get the computer to show blitz, then audible and hot route some 9/go routes and you’ve got 40+ points by the end of the game. Linebackers still intercept way too many balls in deep coverage.
Weight seems to play a very little role in the game. You can have a 240 LB sure tacking strong middle linebacker and with the right block shedding skills and strength he can be an elite Defensive Tackle. Or OLBs that convert to DEs that are 230 lbs and are suddenly elite.
Recognition of Offensive Football systems. Recognize the difference between a 3-4 Nose Tackle and a 4-3 Defensive Tackle. 2-gap vs. one gap. read and react vs. penetrate (it’s all penetration in Madden), bump n run zone corners like in the Tampa 2 vs. man corners (Ronde Barber went to some pro bowls as a Tampa 2 Corner but he’d never make it as a cover corner). OLBs rush backers vs. chase and coverage (DeMarcus Ware vs. Derrick Brooks). Nimble Zone blocking offensive linemen vs. Power man blocking offensive linemen. speedy Air Coryell receivers vs. YAC WCO receivers. Basically what I’m saying is that a 90+ player for one team isn’t going to be the same player for another team depending on the football systems in place.
Franchise: Oddly enough this part of the game has gotten worse over the past 3-4 years. The old generation (PS2 and XBox) had a better Franchise mode than the XBox 360 and PS3 which EA basically imported the Head Coach game into Madden. In the old games you had a preseason that mattered with player progression, training camp where players could get better, player and coach personalities that increased and decreased the chances of a player signing and/or holding out.
Some things I’d like to see in Franchise Mode:
1. In season progressions (like in older Madden).
2. Training Camp to improve players
3. Practice Squad
4. No more Player Potential Grades. What’s the fun of knowing if your player sucks or is a future superstar as soon as you draft him?
5. Future Trades. I wanna be Bill Belickeck and stock pile future picks.
6. Better control of contracts, there are some years when I have lots of cap space that I might as well use so that I might actually want to front load a contract and minimize the financial impact in the future.
7. No more 30 year Franchise Mode with the same players. You can only play it once. After that you stand a good chance of remembering who all the good players are and drafting or trading for them. Change the names around so that the star players don’t always have the same name.
8. Weekly Game Scouting. Be able to look at game film of your up coming opponent to better understand their offense and defense so you can tailor your game plan accordingly.
9. Coaching Progression that works (it worked better in older gen games)
10. Offensive and Defensive Football systems that follow coaches.
11. Hire Position Coaches that develop into Coordinators and Head Coaches.

The Madden franchise has sucked for years!
But I have to buy this years, because they made a lot of changes, especially to Franchise Mode. They are FINALLY taking lessons from 2K Sports.
SF 49ers. SF Giants. SJ Sharks. CHI Bulls.
I'll get it for franchise mode alone. I'm praying for practice squads.

I like in the video
When Frank Gore slides for the TD in the rain. I hated the dumb dives into the endzone from past years. Hopefully they are better this year, like Gore sliding into the endzone while it’s raining or snowing.

Give me NCAA Football over Madden any day
Mostly because my friends and I play online, and the NCAA online dynasty is YEARS ahead of Madden’s online franchise. If I played more single games, Madden might appeal to me more, but for online longevity, NCAA Football absolutely kills Madden.

well...
its funny because i didnt get an xbox 360 until last november so i had been stuck playing a very outdated madden 06 so the graphics were pretty bad and each off season i had to spend copious hours modifying the roasters and finding player ratings to accurately reflect the new madden. that said i miss my 06 for a simple reason, it was simple. the defenses on the harder difficulties would eat you up if you didnt play smart, and some of the rediculous things that happen in 11 didnt happen in 06. players moved a little slower and felt like they had significantly more weight in 06, where as in 11 players could easily breeze back and forth which is a little annoying because i feel its too easy to miss tackles because an opponent just twitches, where as in 06 when you saw a defender you really had to look at the angle he was taking and his speed because you couldnt just run around him (this is on all pro difficulty, all madden cheats) you actually had to think to yourself and ask “ok do i try the spin or juke and risk not getting the first, or do i try to keep running and hope i can edge him enough to move the sticks, or do i go cannon ball style and knock him out?” it was fun and could be tremendously frustrating but was rewarding more so than 11. passing in 06 was much more difficult, pure and simple. dbs would play the receivers much more tightly and some of the midfield crossing routes you didnt dare hit unless you knew you could and you were spot on, like wise with deep routes. in 11 you can pretty much throw anywhere and the players will make rediculous catches and stuff. in 06 you really had to be smart with you throws and couldnt just go all whilly nilly with the passing, if you see a saftey drop for an 8 man blitz, you better have davis running a deep/seem route and as soon as he clears the linebackers, boom, he has it. same with any route you have to look at the defense and hit the receiver at the exact moment. madden 12 looks like it is going to trump 11 and hopefully get back to a better overall quality, i never played 2k5 but it does look great. oh and the lombardi aspect was super cool
Look at that grass
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
Im not competitive I just addicted to winning.
madden is topps....
In my book. Real madden players don’t play franchise mode they play online. Why play a franchise mode past the first year? What’s the point. Everyone who begs for 2ksports to get another shot is dumb. Hit the lab and play online if you want a real game.
EA does it best every year the game gets more realistic and I can’t wait for madden 12 and to start lining VD up in the slot.

Don’t insult me because I play a different mode than you. I play online as well.

Aren’t blogs and forums a place to post my opinion? That is my opinion.
Playing a franchise into the year 2015…with fake players and fake ratings….? I don’t get it. Season mode on all madden setting and online play is what madden is all about.

franchise
Certainly entitled to your opinion, although calling people dumb doesn’t really provide much.
As far as franchise versus online, franchise is fun because sometimes people enjoy that long term GM feel of things. I like drafting and trading and whatnot. Yea it’s fake players and fake ratings but it’s a fantasy world.
