Questions Facing The 2011 49ers: Is Colin Kaepernick NFL Game Ready?

Yesterday I focused on the 49ers 1st round pick, Aldon Smith. Well today, I am going to write a little about Colin Kaepernick and whether or not I believe he is NFL game ready.

I was pleasantly surprised and happy that San Francisco was able to trade up for Colin Kapernick in the 2nd round of April's draft. He has all the athletic ability you want in a professional quarterback. However, there may be some issues that affect his ability to play in the NFL immediately.

Star-divide

The 2011 NFL QB class was one of the weakest in recent memory. It isn't that there aren't any starter caliber players at that position, I think it is more about not have that "true elite" franchise type quarterback. So, San Francisco was extremely smart not to spend a top 10 pick on Cameron Newton, Blaine Gabbert or Jake Locker. I think the teams that drafted them are going to be kicking themselves in a couple of years.

Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick may end up being the best quarterbacks out of this draft class when all is said and done. Both had amazing college careers and translate well to the NFL. Obviously, my focus in this article will not be on Dalton, rather it will be on CK7 (as I call him).

One of the things that caught my attention in re-watching Nevada Wolfpack games was the fact that CK7 has an amazingly strong arm. Now, this could get him in trouble in the NFL because of the speed of the game compared to college. He tends to zip the ball in there up the middle, rather than put some finesse on it. This may have worked well in college, but there could be some issue in regards to this at the next level. NFL secondaries are much faster and see the field much better.

That said, I would rather have a quarterback that has the ability to zip it in there on a dime, rather than leave it floating. I am sure that once CK7 gains experience,  he will be able to understand specific situations as it relates to this. For example, throwing a strike when you have over the top coverage will work, however, he will need to understand the coverage beneath when deciphering when to utilize that amazing skill.

Decision making is another important aspect of a quarterbacks transition from college to the pro's. Usually you can get a way with mistakes in college, especially at the level in which CK7 played. However, once you adjust to the pro's, these mistakes are going to be magnified. On more than one occasion, I did see CK7 throw the ball across the field in coverage; relying a great deal on his arm. While, this could work at the NFL level, the chances for success are minimal unless you are running a misdirection play. Again, this is something that CK7 will recognize once he gets more comfortable playing on Sunday's.

Despite issues with mechanics CK7 is extremely accurate on short and intermediate routes. He leads the receivers real well and gets them in a strong position to make plays after the catch. Something that your really look for in a quarterback playing the west coast system. He seems to be good in the long passes as well, but needs to work on getting more loft on the deep routes. Again, this goes right into CK7's confidence in his arm strength; which isn't a bad asset. Nevada didn't run a whole lot of direct screens, but when they did he was pretty good with those type of short passes as well. This bodes well for San Francisco moving forward because we saw Alex Smith, David Carr and Troy Smith struggle with this a great deal in 2010. The last San Francisco quarterback that was extremely strong in this aspect of the game was Jeff Garcia

Some people may disagree with me on the deep passes and say CK7 puts the right amount of loft on the ball, which may be true. However, I am equating this with his ability to succeed at the NFL level, not what he showed against inferior competition in college.

Another aspect of CK7's game that stood out to me was his above average pocket presence. He could feel when the pocket was collapsing and did a great job either getting rid of the ball or moving away from the pressure and out of the pocket. This is something that is incredibly hard to teach as evidenced with Alex Smith, so it is really nice that CK7 already has this attribute before he has even played a pro game. This aspect of the game might be minimized because the west coast offense's strategy of quick hit and release. But, considering Harbaugh's scheme is going to be somewhat hybrid, this makes CK7 that much more dangerous.

The following is a quick scouting report on CK7 from Mocking the Draft

When it comes to athletic ability Kaepernick is right up there with the likes of Cam Newton. However, like Cam he struggles with the fundamentals of playing quarterback. His abilities will intrigue a team and might lead to an earlier than expected selection. But he is going to need time to develop as his technique is far from NFL ready. Ultimately, Kaepernick is a player with a ton of upside but legitimate question marks.

I disagree with the notion that this technique is far from NFL ready. I had taken this stance in the past and leading up to the draft. However, after studying game film and watching him play; this doesn't seem to be a great issue for me. Techniques are a little bit overrated when it comes to NFL signal callers; each one has a different style and motion of throwing, and CK7 is no different.

Mocking the Draft indicates that CK7 has a long release, kind of like a pitcher in baseball. This might be true, but it is something that can either be disguised well or fixed. It is part of his routine of getting rid of the ball and it didn't seem to effect his ability to release it on time when the pocket collapses. Again, this could be a larger issue considering better play in the pro's, but if this is the major knock on CK7 coming out of college I am alright with it.

Final Analysis: Is he ready?

Like any rookie quarterback CK7 is going to face growing pains if he plays. You cannot expect a rookie signal caller to immediately light up defenses, it very rarely happens. While, we have seen Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez have immediate success there were other factors that enabled that success. Each had above average rushing games and incredibly strong offensive lines. Two things I fully expect San Francisco to have in 2011, especially if their offensive line continues to mold.

If he plays, you wont see CK7 throwing for 300 yards and three scores, he just isn't ready to light it up like that. What you will see is a player that can run the offense, remain consistent and limit mistakes. Three things we have been looking for in a 49er signal caller since Jeff Garcia.

I don't expect CK7 to be the starter heading into the season. That is just too much to expect from a rookie quarterback that hasn't had the ability to work with his coaches during the off-season because of the lockout. However, I can envision a scenario in which Smith either struggles or gets hurt. When that happens and depending on the roster logistics at quarterback, CK7 will be thrown into the fire. If that happens you can expect a player that will be game ready and have the ability to lead his team to victory on any given Sunday.

I am looking forward to watching CK7 play this pre-season because I want to see exactly how his game translates to the NFL even though I already have an idea that it will translate well. Anyone expecting him to come in and win the starting job while leading the 49ers to 25+ PPG is mistaking themselves. He will, however, be a solid contributor in the passing game and do what needs to get done. This is what you have to expect from a player as talented as CK7, and moving forward he only promises to get better.

His brain and experience level are what's not NFL ready yet.

He needs to experience being baited by a crafty NFL DB, seeing how quickly the rush gets to you, trying to throw over guys who are bigger, faster, stronger than what he saw in college. He needs the experience of knowing when a window is really open or not. His instincts will tell him to make a throw that he’d complete in college but in the NFL there is skill at every position.

Will only see him when out of the playoffs

Based on our division I suspect that won’t happen.

We have 4 division games in the last 5 weeks of the season. I expect to be in the mix right upto the end of the season.

Maybe the last game with the Rams things will be wrapped up 1 way or the other and he’ll get in, but I dont’ see a start.

Then again I’m being optimistic that our line will be good enough to not have Smith injured.

by Dave R. on Jul 19, 2011 10:30 AM PDT reply actions

I voted yes

Three reasons we will see CK7 starting this season.

1). Alex Smith completely flames out and CK7’s future is now. (I don’t think this will happen because Alex Smith isn’t that level of horrible. He’s just maddening inconsistent and is just good/bad enough to go 7-9. The question remains if he is able to take two or three steps into a 10-6 winner and win a playoff game.)

2). Alex Smith gets injured. Let’s be honest; Smith isn’t brittle, but he seems to miss 1 or 2 games each season and it is in this circumstance I could see CK7 getting a 1-2 game tryout preview. This is the most likely scenario in my mind.

3). The 49ers are eliminated early because they have something like an 0-8 start. CK7 would probably get several tryout starts in preparation for 2012. This would probably also mean that we will be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

Jim Harbaugh doesn't just WANT winners, he MAKES them!

The only thing CK will carry this year

is a clipboard. He’ll be a third-stringer behind Alex and veteran QB to be named later. Anyone who thinks Harbaugh would risk his first NFL QB project in anything other than extraordinary circumstances is delusional.

I'll be shocked if Kaepernick isn't at worst the second string QB this season,

and would not be at all surprised if he got some playing time, or even started a game or two. It’ll be interesting to see how they divide up the preseason snaps between Smith and Kaepernick. I expect Smith to get more first-team snaps, but Kaepernick should get a decent number as well. Perhaps a 70-30 or 65-35 split or something? Or maybe let Kaepernick start one of the pre-season games and have Smith start the other three?

It seems likely that he'll get at least one start

If Alex lights it up and we’re doing great, we might see him in some garbage time pre-playoffs
If Alex stinks it up or gets hurt, we’ll see him often, I suspect

I also suspect we’ll see CK7 on some wildcat/misdirection type of plays.

by See Jay on Jul 19, 2011 11:56 AM PDT reply actions

even if he does not start day one.

alex smith has only started every game for the entire season in only one year. Shoulder injury takes him out and Kaepernick will start a few at least.

Kaepernick & Crabtree

Im still wondering about two things that have not come to light yet for some mysterious reason…
(1) Why was the extent of Kaepernick leg injury?
(2) Does anyone know what Crabtree 40 time is?

In a WCO, not really matter…However, I recall Crabtree boasting just prior to the year he was drafted, he could run a 4.4 blinded, then of course he hurt his foot prior to combine and no team knew what his 40 time was. I would think the 9ers must of timed him in 40 at some point after they drafted him, simply out of curiosity themselves. It bugs me… it still a secret even today. That along with why nobody knows what Kaepernick leg injury really was all about.

It really doesn’t matter what his 40-time is. What matters is his in game speed and ability to cut and shake DB’s.

This

If you can shake a guy and get a couple yards of separation it doesn’t matter that he runs a 4.4 and you run a 4.5 — unless you are inside your own 20 the field isn’t long enough for him to catch you.

Football is a game of angles. So much of what we call “game speed” has more to do with proper angles and smooth sharp changes of direction than straight line speed.

I'd say that it is not outside the realm of possibility.

But everything is contingent on how well Alex Smith plays. If Alex blows the doors off, or even plays a sliver better than average, I don’t think Kaep will see action other than maybe an occasional situation here and there.

As 49er fans we are spoiled because of Montana, Young and even Garcia

Smith played better than average over the last two seasons, when he was in. His QB rating has been at about 82.0 during that span, not great but average. Better than Donovan McNabb and right there with Carson Palmer.

If you look at advanced passing statistics, Smith is at or slightly above average as well. So, the question is; will CK7 be above average as a rookie? If so, he gives us a better chance to win and will see the field.

If Smith is able to jump those advanced statistics and passer rating be a few points, he will be the starter as long as he is healthy

This has nothing to do with Montana, Young, or even Garcia... those days are long gone and have been for some time.

I look at the competition between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith two years ago. Smith lost. Maybe he got a bit better last year (I have no idea how under the coaching staff he was bound to) but there is still a chance that Kaep, even in year one, is better than a Shaun Hill type of QB. I honestly believe that Harbaugh will give him every chance to show that he is worthy. It’s really up to Kaep… but ultimately it’s up to Smith. If he has a horrible preseason, like he has done before, and Kaep really has a smoking great preseason, I think that there will be a decision and a big dilemma for Harbaugh, Chryst, and Roman to make.

Young did have that monkey.

My point was that “certain” 49er fans attach themselves too much wit the dynasty of the 80s and 90s and don’t look fairly to what Alex can actually do on the field. Hopefully, this doesn’t extend to CK7’s tenure as the starter.

Of course, playing at an all-pro level will probably mute any criticism

I look at it fairly, his accuracy is most inconsistent, then comes the hot reads. If Harbaugh simplifies reads for his qbs and it comes down to poise and accuracy, Kaepernick could be the starter, although I’d rather he wasn’t.

As for the vote, I agree with Adusoron. Smith misses a couple of games through injury and CK7 starts by way of a mini trial. Depending on the state of the NFC West at that point, he either guides us into the play-offs or sees out a dead rubber season.

If the 49ers struggle in the first half or two thirds of the season

and it is apparent they will not make the playoffs, CK7 will start because at some point you need to look towards the future.

However, considering they have a better coaching staff and the NFC West is weak, I really doubt San Francisco will be out of the playoff race during the season. It will probably go down to the final 2-3 games.

Well

depends a lot on the situation. If San Francisco doesn’t have a bye during the wildcard week there remains a strong possibility that CK7 starts. This due to the fact that they don’t want to expose Smith to injury and may want to rest him.

I'd prefer to see him sit the entire first season.

Work with the practice squad, study film, learn the offense so that it becomes instintively ingrained. Second season, get some snaps during garbage time and then if ready, maybe some late-season starts. Third season, time to see if he’s ready to handle the gig full time.

I think that development cycle (give or take a little) would be ideal.

Harbaugh most likely won't play Kap this year

If Harbaugh’s M.O. at Stanford is anything to go by, he won’t put a QB in the field for the latter to just gain experience. I seem to recall that he could have Started Luck in the latter’s red-shirt year with a chance for a bowl game on the line. He didn’t.

I believe Harbaugh will treat Kap like a project this year. He probably thinks he will know when Kap will be ready to play. He has already concluded that he can win with Smith. He’s not going to be swayed by any fan sentiment.

In fact, maybe that’s why I have an issue with CK7…sounds like a knock off cheap version of CK1.

oh well

I’ll still stick with CK on occasion. Although I generally spell names out. Bamm Bamm is the only one I’m open to using a little more frequently. Not everybody likes it, but every since Ochocinco bestowed it on Willis, I’ve been a fan.

Yeah, I like that one...

It’s always a nice one to pull out of your back pocket in a game thread when he lights someone up.

Whow are these people? Terminators?

I just have a personal issue with it. Call them whatever… I just don’t think P52, or CK7 stick.

It’s like

G21
D38
T51

Its just not real clever.

If Smith gets hurt

that is a bad omen for the 9ers and CK. He isnt seasoned enough to play this year. If Smith struggles or gets hurt that probably means the offensive line hasnt gotten better after a year together. If this kid is as good as Harbaugh hopes he is the last thing he will not want to do is ruin his confidence by sending him to the slaughter before he is ready. Everyone wants to play but cooler heads should prevail ala Green Bay + Super bowl. Aaron Rodgers was a strong armed kid too.

JH is a former QB, he's not gonna just yank AS for a bad game or two...

and AS hardly ever looks that bad for that long to warrant a benching. if he gets hurt, then yeah, CK is starting.

Give tha guy a break...I remember losing most of our games because of mistakes by players that did not play the quarterback position.

I'm sure Norv Turner is a good judge of a good QB...even he said the guy can be good w/ quality people around him.
