Nnamdi Asomugha: Is It Possible The 49ers Are Keeping Their Interest Under The Radar?

Until now I haven't really given a whole lot of thought to whether Nnamdi Asomugha will end up with the 49ers. Given that most NFL teams would love to have him in their secondary, the competition to sign him will likely be as steep as anybody else on the NFL free agent market over the next week or so. He's a Cal guy but I don't put much stock into home town discounts at this point, particularly when you've got teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with upwards of $60 million in cap space.

I bring this all up because there are little bits of chatter over at the World Wide Leader that have mentioned Nnamdi and the 49ers. They're not saying a deal will happen or even that it might happen. But it still piqued my curiosity. Mike Sando put together his "air-tight case" for the 49ers adding Nnamdi. Today also saw John Clayton discussing candidates to be cut and in his mention of Nate Clements he said, "There are some people in San Francisco who believe the 49ers might consider signing Nnamdi Asomugha. Releasing Clements frees up $14 million."

These two articles likely mean very little other than coincidental timing. The 49ers seem perfectly fine keeping their intentions about anything in free agency fairly under the radar. Is it possible they might jump out with a significant splash like this? Or am I just creating more smoke screens to further confuse everybody?

I will say I was intrigued by Sando's comment comparing Nnamdi and Charles Woodson. One of the concerns voiced in Nnamdi-related posts is that of age. He just turned 30 and that is not exactly a good number for some positions in the NFL. Could Nnamdi follow Woodson's post-30 career model?
