Official NN Free Agency/Trade Thread - Post UDFAs [7/26]

Although I'd normally wait until our first official free agency FanPost got up to 500+ comments, this actually seems like a good transition time. UDFAs are still out there to be signed but the 49ers are likely close to wrapping up their moves for now. Thus, it's time to start looking ahead to big boy free agency, which starts Friday. Teams are already telling players they can expect to be cut in the coming days and trade rumors are circulating for guys like Kevin Kolb.

The latest news is that Tavaris Jackson agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks. He can't sign until Friday but it sounds like he's headed to the Pacific Northwest. This kind of signing would be yet another sign that Hasselbeck is out in Seattle (where media is already tweeting he's gone). Feel free to discuss further in here.

Once again, try and keep free agency discussion in here and on the front page. If you have a unique angle you want to pursue that requires a bit more depth, feel free to create a FanPost. But if you're just looking to discuss free agents, this is your best bet.

If you write a FanPost that would better be served as a comment here, I or one of the moderators will likely use the warning system to instruct you to post your info as a comment. It will appear as a warning but it is only a warning in the sense that you need to move the content. We'll paste your content into the warning and you can copy it into the comments of this FanPost. The warnings are not disciplinary in nature, but rather a way to keep the front page a bit more organized.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I won't say first...

but I’m curious as to people’s thoughts re: Hasselbeck as a Niner. I was skeptical at first, but at the end of the day I think it would improve our team, so if the price is right I’m in favor.

priced as a backup, which he would probably be at least at-first

then fine. We need two competent QB’s who have been around block until Kaep get’s snaps vs. NFL defense.

by KGGotGame on Jul 26, 2011 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I know he's been a disappointment

but in my opinion he would be at least our number 2 receiver.

by brianmc27 on Jul 26, 2011 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I second that, but I don't think we need him.

I feel like our WR group is fine, that both Crabtree and Morgan will improve, and I’d prefer our cap to be spent on more substantial deals. Signing our own FAs should be top priority.

by Rhombus on Jul 26, 2011 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I definitely wouldn't want him on the team.

He’s a giant prima donna. Based on skills alone, i think he’s a huge talent upgrade over Morgan.

Im asking if you think he has any affect on the Niners? Do you think that the more teams that fill their QB need the better the chance Matt H ends up a Niner? Looking for your opinion

by KGGotGame on Jul 26, 2011 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh

It pretty much means that he isn’t going to Seattle or Arizona. McNabb was probably never on the 49ers raider. Jackson signing with Seattle is a much bigger deal because that takes them out of the market.

You are still looking at San Francisco, Tennessee and Arizona as the three teams that Hasselbeck will go to, with Tennessee in the lead. It does, however, take Minnesota out of the Hass sweepstakes.

my thoughts exactly… never expected D Mac as a Niner

by KGGotGame on Jul 26, 2011 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Ahem. Small grammar lesson, meant to be taken as nicely as possible.

Affect is a verb. Effect is a noun.

Example 1: Will McNabb have an effect on the Niners FA signings in 2011?
Example 2: Will McNabb affect the Niners FA signings in 2011?

effect can also be a verb, but is usually used incorrectly.

I hope this has enlightened some of you.

Agreed on Spikes

And agreed on Goldson really. Let him walk tack the comp we get for him and get Weddle on a 3-4 yr deal. Get a DB like Jonathan Joseph (dreaming a bit there maybe) or Josh Wilson (more realistic). Start to develop some of the young guys behind them (maybe even move Reggie back to CB or put in a half and half) and look for a 1st or second round CB next year. DB problems solved at least by next year.

goldson is not special. he is average to below average safety. only reason he may be back because he was the play caller on defense. he is not good and the niners are Loaded with talent at that position, loaded. so loaded that players will be cut even if goldson is not signed.

This seems like business-minded posturing to me. Build up an echo chamber effect of unattributed praise and “interest” to drive up your asking price.

That’s not to say that there aren’t teams that are legitimately interested in Takeo and Goldson, I’m sure there are, but the fact that the players themselves are tweeting about it doesn’t really surprise or concern me. Until we hear something a bit more concrete, don’t buy into the hype.

Was reported

that there will be no Nate Clements news today, still trying to figure out what to do. I would tend to believe that SF is gauging interest in regards to Nnamdi, Joseph, Cromartie etc.. before making a final decision on Clements.

If they believe a top tier corner is going to come here, Clements will be gone. If not, he will be restructured and they will being in a second tier player like Richard Marshall

With Rogers leaving Washington potentially, they could try and sneak in there too. Nnamdi and DeAngelo Hall would be a lockdown secondary

Maybe he doesn't have the zip on the long ball (not convinced on that)

but his short to medium ball hasn’t declined at all.

by manraj7 on Jul 27, 2011 12:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh his short to medium hasn't declined at all.

And he can (and needs to) put much more arc on his deep ball than his 12-15 yard outs so he doesn’t have any problem at all on go and seam routes.

But on the 12-15 yard outs the ball needs to be thrown on a frozen rope right at the sideline, and from the middle of the field that’s a 30 yard ball.

I’m sure he’d be wasted as a broadcaster since he’s practically an OC now — but maybe he’d enjoy it more than having to work with QBs not even close to half his talent level.

by Ougadas on Jul 27, 2011 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Very true

Although if I had Peyton’s money I’d do what I enjoyed most. Fortunately for him I think maybe those interests will align and we’ll see a bidding war between NFL, ESPN, and the networks.

If they replace Franklin as is, that will not work. But as Allforfunnplay explained to me earlier, that Fangio will run a hybrid 4-3 where both Soap and RJF can concentrate on gap penetration which they are good at. A lot depends on the scheme that will be implemented and I don’t think even Fangio even knows what he will do.

Much as like TKO, I think the drop off between him and Bowman isn’t hugely significant. I’d like to retain TKO just to give Bowman another year but it’s not a huge loss if he leaves.

I don't think the drop-off is significant either.

But losing Aubrayo and Lawson, and Takeo, I feel we will struggle greatly against the run. Don’t see how Soap can be nearly as effective as Aubrayo, nor Aldon Smith as a rookie as Lawson in setting the edge.

everybody's talking about Nmadi with $15 million but I can't see it

If he wants that $15 million there are only two or three teams that would be able to pay him, much less willing.

Even $3 million per less at $12 million per season average would have many more buyers interested in him and he’d have his pick of teams. At that price he can negotiate a bigger signing bonus and a longer term deal, both are things that players really want.

at $18 million under right now, that makes $42 million

So let’s look at this right now. $16 million to sign Nmadi. Now we have $26 million. Alex Smith was just signed for $5 million, leaving us $21 million. Baas will take at least $4 million, leaving $17 million. Mcdonald will want at least $4 million (and that’s if he’s a starter, $6 million if not). That leaves us $11 million. Lawson will want at least Haralson money, so we’re talking another $5 million. Now we have $6 million left with none of our rookies signed.

If Nmadi gets $16 million it won’t be from the 49ers. It’ll be from a team looking for that one missing piece and that’s not this one.

Haralson's deal

was 5 years $15 million. Average $3 million per year. If Lawson is getting lots of interest from around the league $5 million per year average is not unreasonable.

Baas at $4 million per year is way undervalued for a center—see today’s post on why.

McDonald’s salary last year was $3.95 million. Why wouldn’t he expect to get paid at least that going forward, especially when the team has already told him that they want him back and there’s interest in him around the league.

Haralson's deal along with Soap, are the reason our defense will suffer this year.

this is another fact that you stated wrong in that many days.

McDonald signed a four-year, $2.257 million rookie contract, which he maximized by reaching playing-time incentives that increased his $550,000 2010 base salary to $1.101 million.

http://www.macsfootballblog.com/2011/06/49ers-de-ray-mcdonald-wants-to-start.html

where did you get that McDonald made 3.95million last year? he was in his last year of his rookie contract?

are you purposely mistating facts?

I don't know about you

but I do have a life outside of Niners Nation.

Anyways, you can ignore that bit about McDonald—the Niners offered him a tender at a 1st and 3rd round pick this season, not last.

The payout for that would’ve been $3.95 million, which is where I got that from. At the same time Lawson and Goldson were offered RFA tenders.

Also, I'm not sure that the $3 million roster exemption works that way

but I could be wrong. There are still a whole bunch of questions about how the salary cap is going to work out.

have I ever said Clements sucks? Ever?

It would be paying top dollar for a player and then getting him in his declining years. When the 49ers signed Clements it made him the highest paid defensive player ever and was regarded as going a bit overboard. If we pay $18 million per season for Nmadi it’s going to be the exact same thing.

$18 million per season!?! Who in the world is throwing around that number but you? Most people are saying $15-16 million and I don’t think he’ll end up with that much. I think his final deal will be closer to $12-13 million with a fairly signficant chunk of guaranteed money.

Again with taking things out of context

I want Nmadi. I don’t think he’s worth $18 million. I don’t think any player on the football team other than a quarterback is worth that much. I don’t think he’s worth $15 million per year.

If we end up paying him $18 million per year like HH wants we’ll be overpaying for one player who in a couple of years will start hitting his decline. Exactly the same thing that happened with Nate Clements (who, BTW, is still just fine in run support).

by smileyman on Jul 26, 2011 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Clements is probably the BEST run supporting CB. But he is the bottom 10 percent in coverage.

Nnamdi will get better with age and move to Safety. He will bring excellent technique to all of our corners. He won’t demand a contract, he’s not that type of guy. he will take about 13-15 mil, and he’s worth it, one side of the field is shut the F DOWN!!!

there are only a couple of teams who can afford to pay him (both in money and roster) that kind of salary. If he goes to $13-15 million he opens himself up to any team in the league and will be able to sign with whomever he wants.

I've never said Clements sucked

I said we paid top dollar for him at the peak of his career and then got to watch him decline.

If we pay Nmadi anything more than $12-14 million per season it’ll be the same situation. We’ll get him at the peak of his career and get to watch him decline and have to shed him at the end of it.

Because Spikes left the CBA isn't good?

I can see exactly why Spikes would leave: A.) He’s not an integral part of our defense with Manusky gone, B.) He’s at the tail end of his career, C.) We drafted a guy in the 3rd round last year to be his replacement.

Not exactly surprising that he would leave.

by smileyman on Jul 26, 2011 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Has nothing to do with Spikes at all, I didn’t want him to come back anyway. This CBA is forcing teams to spend and will force player’s salaries up. Especially overrated players like Goldson. TKO, doesn’t really fit what I meant. Young players will not be staying around with their team that drafted them.

That's the whole point of the CBA

that’s what the players wanted. It’s worse this year than it will be in other years because this season teams have to have actual cash spending at 99% of the salary cap. 2012 it’s 95%, and after that it’s 89%.

So far the FO is not impressing

Paying Smith $5M !!!!! and letting Spikes go. No significant signings. So many other teams moving in a better direction. WTF are they doing? They seem to be confused and missing out on some very intriguing moves. What are they doing with Clements? Are they going to go after a CB? A safety> Or do they really think Goldson is the guy? And what about getting a RG in free agency. Plenty out there at the moment. And are they re-signing Bass or is he going to be the next one to make news sigining somewhere else?

So far, this day sucks.

Franklin and Lawson weren’t the best players. One (Franklin), has had a good two years but isn’t worth the 9MM he is going to get. Lawson isn’t a great fit in the 3-4. Also, Spikes wasn’t worth a three year contract.

Wow

You have a serious man crush on him. Lawson caused more than 50% of the 49er turnover opportunities last season? I’d like to see that broken down. He held his edge in the run? Sometimes, but he didn’t excel at it. His skills covering are great, but a one dimensional LB isn’t worth paying big money for unless that one dimension is creating sacks.

by smileyman on Jul 26, 2011 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I couldn't see keeping him

as our primary rush backer, despite his decent pressure per play statistics. With a decent secondary pressures can lead to more interceptions than sacks can fumbles, but that part isn’t there yet.

I could see keeping him to play the other OLB position if we run a majority of 4-3 Under and have Aldon take his place as a hybrid DE/OLB.

But that would require Lawson not trying to cash in. If he does, we gotta let him walk.

by Ougadas on Jul 27, 2011 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions

$6-8 million would be what I'd offer Franklin, with $8 being the hardcap

If he can get more than $8 from another team he’s welcome to it. I agree with the rest of what you say too. Spikes wasn’t worth a 2 or 3 year deal, not with his replacement already on the roster and Lawson is suited better as a 4-3 LB.

I've been a proponent of trying to keep Franklin

But I’m starting to wonder if our coaching staff wants Franklin back at any price.

than there is no need for goldson

safety is one position that the niners are stacked in
mays, reggie smith, curtis taylor, C.J. Spillman(will be cut) Chris Maragos, Colin Jones, and Chris Culliver can play that position.

Goldson can leave and there will be better or the same level of play at that position.

Stacked?
mays, reggie smith, curtis taylor, C.J. Spillman(will be cut) Chris Maragos, Colin Jones, and Chris Culliver can play that position.

Mays is not quite ready. Smith will be the starter. Taylor is a good backup and good on st. Spillman will not be cut, he’s our best gunner. Maragos will probably be cut. Jones might be a good st player with his speed.

So if you mean we are stacked with special teams players at safety then yes, you are correct.

I agree he will but if Goldson leaves they may give him some reps if we pick up a good DB in FA

I am really nervous about the defense

I do not believe in Fangio and everyone is leaving. I understand that you want to get your guys, but they aren’t getting anybody. I think we will really struggle next year

You don't believe in Fangio?

Everyone is leaving? Like Justin Smith and Patrick Willis (our two best players)?

Everyone that can

I do not see any history of Fangio’s that makes me feel reassured and I have no idea what they want because its been too quiet on signings for us. Smith and Willis can only do so much alone.

they are hardly alone

by goatfather on Jul 26, 2011 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Who else is there? The line is unproven, I don’t even know who our linebackers are and the secondary was a mess even with Goldson. I think we are overhauling, which isn’t a bad thing. Just that the D will suffer through the growing pains

by mcwagner on Jul 26, 2011 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

We'll resign McDonald

He’ll start on the other side from Smith. If Franklin does leave, we’ll have to make do with Sopoaga or RJF, but McDonald will be an improvement on the end over Sopoaga.

Bowman was drafted specifically to replace Spikes, so we knew this day was coming. Aldon Smith was drafted to provide a rush presence on the outside, presumably to replace Lawson if needed, or if Lawson is retained to move to the right side.

The front 7 will still retain it’s effectiveness. The secondary did stink last season, but it’s stunk for a long time. I feel confident that the reason you’re not seeing big moves yet (a whole day into free agency) is because the 49ers are chasing Nmadi. We bring him in and regardless of what happens with Clements our secondary is vastly improved. If we can rework Clements’ contract (maybe get rid of that extra $7 million in LTBE he’s due this year), then we can keep both of them and go from a pretty bad CB duo to a pretty impressive one.

by smileyman on Jul 27, 2011 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Why don't you believe in Fangio?

The team hasn’t even played a pre-season game and you’re writing him off. Only one player has left for sure and that’s a 34 year old LB who had his replacement drafted last year. Goldson may or may not leave, Clements may or may not leave. Franklin may or may not leave. Lawson may or may not leave.

We knew all of this at the end of last season.

by smileyman on Jul 27, 2011 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Fangio

would have some input on the players he wants on defense. Now, the monetary and decision making issues are that of Baalke and Harbaugh

What price would you take Goldson back at?

He’s not an awful safety. Even with his season last year he was still at least average. $6 million? $5 million? $4 million?

I just don’t know who we have that can step up to replace him right away. Spillman was terrific on special teams but is he ready to start opposite Mays? Reggie Smith has been on the bubble for awhile. Chris Maragos?

by smileyman on Jul 27, 2011 12:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I just think we need to focus on the younger guys and their development in the league.

Goldson is already stuck in his ways and bad habits. It would be easier to teach a new guy technique from scratch than to make a vet unlearn everything he knows and start from scratch.

I will be okay if Goldson winds up across the bay in Oakland.

I completely agree with that

This is why I am not torn on the loss of Spikes (though he will be missed) because of having Bowman on the roster. I also want to see San Francisco play a lot more of Taylor Mays, Phillip Adams, Kyle Williams and Kendall Hunter in 2011.

Goldson is still young and teachable, San Francisco also has the best secondary coach in the entire league, which will help a lot. Goldson has a breakout 2009 season and regresses last season. I see no reason why we don’t look at retaining him for THE RIGHT PRICE

In fact, that is the least important aspect of their game

It was his job in Cincy's defense.

Go look at his stats pre-Mike Zimmer… he was all over the field. Zimmer is a crappy D-Coordinator. In just two years, he dismantled a pretty decent defense.

I am not really buying into that

I do think that Dhani is an average starter in the NFL, but I would MUCH rather have Bowman learn on the run than bring him in.

There is a reason why Jones didn’t last more than three seasons in both Philadelphia and New York, because he just isn’t that good. Those are solid defenses that saw a way to upgrade from Dhani.

Did love his show though!

In the middle of a youth movement

Barnett is 30 and Jones is 33.

Why would we give multi-year contracts to either of those guys?

Might as well have given TK his 3 year contract — he’s in better shape and has aged much better than either.

Barnett

He just turned 30, so it’s not like he is ancient or anything like that. He would be extremely familiar with the defense and not have to make too many adjustments other than lanuage. He could be an instant insert and upgrade over Bowman for the time being. 2 or 3 yr deal would not be a bad way to go if they could land him.

Bowman has the ability and upside

It would have been ideal to have him sit behind TKO for a year or two. So, bringing in a vet could work. However, that money could be spent elsewhere. 3-4MM could be the difference between Marshall and Joseph.

What is going on? I'm so confused.

The only FA we seem to have made ANY effort of keeping is goldson, and while I think we should keep him we’re letting really valuable talent at low-depth positions just leave, with no explanation.

I can only think we’re gonna make one or two big deals soon, but we’re sacrificing a lot of key players with very little by way of replacement. Starting to get really worried.

by Rhombus on Jul 27, 2011 7:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Certainly not looking good, 6 months ago I thought the two FAs that would hurt the most if lost

were Franklin and Baas, well they’re both gone.

Looks like they’re going to overpay Goldson. Maiocco has their cap space at 13 million right now, 7 million for rookies, so 6 million. Minus 17 for Clements 23. If they overpay Goldson that puts it about 16. McDonald 13.. Real possibility they might just bring in 6 or 7 cheap vets ( LaBoy, a Low priced corner ) to put it around 9/10 million under the cap. Might be all they do. If they restructure Clements to 7 million that will basically cap them out.
