49ers Roster Situation As 2011 NFL Free Agency Approaches

As we head into our the second day for official undrafted free agent signings, the 49ers are likely just about wrapped up with the UDFAs. We might see one or two straggle in but for the most part as the team prepares to start training camp on Thursday, that part of the roster is just about set. After the jump I've posted a rundown of the entire roster as it currently stands. Big thanks to the two Matts (CSNSac Bee) for their foot work in verifying some of these UDFAs.

The list reflects players already under contract, UDFAs signed yesterday, and players who have agreed to terms but have not officially signed (so no mention of TKO). If you head over to Maiocco's blog post on the UDFAs, you can see a brief snippet on each of rookie. Starting later today we'll have our own breakdowns of each new rookie. We'll have a lot of posts coming out over the next week. On the one hand everybody loves new information and analysis, but on the other hand it will be a lot of posts coming at you. I suppose that's what we have to live with when we're compiling four months of information into one week of posting space. Good times.

Star-divide

Later tomorrow as we know more about final UDFA signings we'll get a projected depth chart together so we can really put together some better predictions heading into free agency. As it currently stands, the 49ers have 78 players on their roster or expected on their roster once contracts are finalized (draft picks, Alex Smith). That leaves 12 roster spots with 14 free agents and some holes to fill. A quick look through the 49ers free agents reveals at least five guys I'd say the 49ers are likely to let walk without an offer: Troy Smith, Brian Westbrook, Tony Wragge, Jeff Reed, Will James.

That brings the team down to nine free agents. At least one of Dashon Goldson, Aubrayo Franklin and Manny Lawson is walking, and the chances of it being two players is probably decently high. That would open up a couple more spots on the 90-man roster. It's hard to pick positions right now because we don't know if the team will be looking to add some safety depth, or maybe another outside linebacker if Manny walks. They could add depth there anyway, but it really just depends on what we see in the coming days of free agency.

Starting to get a little concerned about the roster turnover so far.

I know, I’m not a GM and I’m sure they have a plan. It just worries me that the plan is “we’ll suck this year, rebuild, and hope to start contending next year”.

Maybe that’s the best plan long-term but I hate to accept defeat.

Do you remember how much turnover there was on the Seahags roster last year?

We can still win this division with primarily rookies as back ups and situational players. Most of our starters are going to be veterans who are, at the very least, comfortable with the league and know our division opponents well. It’s still feasible that we win the division and make the playoffs with what we have now plus a few veteran FAs to fill in some holes.

Personally, I don’t see our division doing anything to get significantly better than us. The Rams are the only worry we have.

i like the rebuilding mentality

It shows that the FO wants to fix things for the long haul, not just try and win it this year. Honestly, I don’t think SF should keep any of the free agents, except Baas and McDonald. They were part of the problem last year. Besides already being up in years, they couldn’t perform well in simplified schemes, so how are they supposed to be in more complex schemes?

Undrafted centers from Stanford? Hrmm

You missed that he was an All-American?

He knows the ofefnsive line calls from day one. With an NFL conditioning program and a little extra weight, he’ll be fine. Give it one or two years and you won’t be questioning it. I think the last center we got from Stanford turned out pretty good?

Also, the two tackles we signed are good depth and potential starters for the future on the right side. The DL signings we made are likely the best in the league out of the undrafted class, and both were rated higher than ‘undrafted.’
