Official NN Free Agency/Trade Thread - Post-Spikes/Baas [7/27]

Fooch's Note: I'll start linking to all the previous front page posts since we've got so much content coming out.

The loss of Takeo Spikes and David Baas got things flying in the last official free agency thread, so it's time to start another one. We've got a whole host of topics on the front page but this is our general supplement to that, particularly if you don't see a free agency topic to your liking.

The latest news has the 49ers signing Tony Wragge to a one year deal, potentially cutting David Carr tomorrow and in the running for Nnamdi Asomugha. Outside the 49ers bubble, the Cardinals could have a deal for Kolb in the next 48 hours (per @jasonlacanfora), and Kyle orton could be dealt to Miami. And that's just the rumor mill off the top of my head. Insanity continues.

Once again, try and keep free agency discussion in here and on the front page. If you have a unique angle you want to pursue that requires a bit more depth, feel free to create a FanPost. But if you're just looking to discuss free agents, this is your best bet.

If you write a FanPost that would better be served as a comment here, I or one of the moderators will likely use the warning system to instruct you to post your info as a comment. It will appear as a warning but it is only a warning in the sense that you need to move the content. We'll paste your content into the warning and you can copy it into the comments of this FanPost. The warnings are not disciplinary in nature, but rather a way to keep the front page a bit more organized.

Many 49er fans on the edge....

But Nnamdi rumors have made us take a few steps back

by brundylop on Jul 27, 2011 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

I don't know about many...

There’s a few jumping off the edge… but I think most are waiting patiently for what is to come and be permanent.

No need to start going off on tangents until everything is set in stone… and even then, it’s kind of silly till we actually see the team play a few games in the regular season.

Sure, express your feelings… no matter how outrageous.

and a lot of these free agents

but we all knew the guys that have been “good” were going to get big paydays.

hopefully some more “ok” talent comes free from cuts, 49ers will need depth and patchwork starters at a few positions.

the problem with the baas

signing w/ the Giants is that it was said that the niners priority was him.

If they couldnt convince him to stay..what does that say about other free agents and the future?

by 11allstar on Jul 27, 2011 10:13 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I'm worried because Baas has a playbook, and the 49ers play the Giants this year

Obviously, the playbook will probably change and get pages added to it, but stil…

by brundylop on Jul 27, 2011 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions

at least its out of conference..

and im pretty sure they are required to turn it in, along with clearing out the locker etc…not a huge thing..unless Baas has an axe to grind..

eh, baas barely knew the playbook

and coaches change teams all the time without it meaning much

It's funny cause last year this time we were crying

Cut Baas and now the shift? He did step in well and thats good but it was his contract year and he was only good a couple of season that were never consecutive.

Nnamdi!

I hope he has the Charles Woodson effect going on if he comes here! He has had some injuries the past two seasons. I don’t want to pay a bunch of loot for a player that is just going to be injured all the time!

Per his agent

Eric Weddle just became the highest paid safety in NFL history.

Took Mays high

put the man in and see if he floats. I’m not sweating Goldson, because I see Clements as a safety anyway. We just need the rookie to pan out as a number 3 guy, pick up Joseph or Nnamdi, and hope Spencer steps it backup.

spencer needs to go, i just really hope the niners do not resign goldson. someone team will probably offer too much money and we have decent safeties behind him.

I'm not surprised about the Nnamdi to SF rumors

I’ve heard them a lot, especially in the days before Free Agency started.

I also believe us letting all these players walk is because we’re saving money to go after him.

if chilo is gone and snyder is there, would be much better pass protection but a little less in the run game; overall imporvement. a rookie on the line might not be that bad as there was to rookies on the line last year.

Rachal was drafted in 2008

he started 6 games that year. He missed week 2 at New Orleans this year (can’t remember why but I think his ankle was hurt). He didn’t start in St. Louis but he played most of the snaps.

2009 he started every game.

2008 he started 6 games, played in 8. So yeah, 2 1/2 seasons. Too early to cut bait and run on a guy who, when he was drafted, was a bit of a reach and was known to be raw.

If he had been in the league for 4 years and was still this inconsistent, then yeah, cut bait and run.

by smileyman on Jul 27, 2011 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

He wasn't benched.

He missed 1 game because of his child being born. And a half because of an injury.

Alex Smith is largely a joke because he is the face of what has been an embarrassing offense

it’s 50/50 deserved. unfortunately for him he can’t just play well to erase it, the 49ers need to win. He could have a 95 rating this year, if the 49ers go 6-10 he will be blamed and his reputation will remain the same.

by whistlingmountain on Jul 27, 2011 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I hate when people bash Smith

I know he has been a major let down but he has had so many different offenses and coaches that his progression was bound to be killed. He played great when he had a coach who knew what he was doing with QBs (Shanahan) but that has not been the case recently and he lost a year to a shoulder injury. I would have loved to see what kind of player he would have been with the same system for 3 years in a row.

really trading Rogers-Cromartie for Kolb? So, they take Peterson to beef up the d-backfield, and then say, NAH, nevermind. We’d rather have a WAY over valued QB who hasn’t actually done anything, but for some reason the whole world has a man crush on him.

The Cardinals are also going to sign an unproven signal caller to a franchise type contract while giving up their best pre-Peterson corner and a 2nd,3rd and conditional pick

if they can do something like that, why can the niners not give Nnamdi a 20million dollar contract per year with only a cap hit of 5million?

niners have way more cap space than the jets. I do not get how they can do that. there must a year where there is a huge cap hit, like a 15 or 20 million dollar cap hit. there has to be 7.5million added to other years.

If Holmes really wanted to be in NY

They could pay him $2.45 guaranteed in this year and the rest over the rest of his contract. There are lots of creative ways to do contracts.

by smileyman on Jul 27, 2011 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Some thinking about Nnamdi

If he was truly interested in signing with the Jets I assume it would have already happened by now. There is a reason why he is having in-depth conversations with the 49ers. I can’t tell you exactly what that reason is, but there is something to it.

Nnamdi is setting the market for fellow corners, so there is pressure for him to get a deal done soon. If the indications that SF first made contact today are true, it probably means that Nnamdi is seriously considering signing with the 49ers

Additionally, it was reported that the Jets offered a ceiling at 12MM per year, something the 49ers can beat by restructuring the contract of Clements or releasing him.

Also, don’t discount his ties to the Bay, which has lasted for well over a decade at this point and the fact that SF has a good chance of contending in the NFC West with him on board. Having Ed Donatell, who has an outstanding reputation around the league, as the secondary coach is a big deal too.

There are more factors pushing Nnamdi to San Francisco than there are pulling him to New York

It depends on what he values more

I think that the Niners could probably make a better financial offer (though I’m skeptical of the 12mm ceiling reports). But does Nnamdi want to contend for a Super Bowl next year? Let’s be honest, the Niners aren’t there (yet).

If he wants to compete for a championship immediately, he may give the Jets a discount. If he wants a little bit more money and to stay close to home on a good, but not great, team that has some additional rebuilding to do, he’ll go with the Niners.

Or Tampa/Houston will come in on Thursday with bags of cash and he’ll fold.

Given all the personnel we’ve lost so far during the 2-day off season, I hope we can land him.

by MikeDv on Jul 27, 2011 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously?

And #4 kills the legitimacy of this article pretty easily.

4. Deion Sanders Factor- Any player who wears the number 21 is making a personal tribute to Deion Sanders. Sanders is the measuring stick for all cornerbacks. Asomugha wears 21. Asomugha has a chance to join the 49ers and help the team return to their winning ways. He can come in and show he is equal to or better than Sanders covering receivers in a San Francisco uniform like Sanders used to. The opportunity is simply to appealing to pass up. Asomugha has already demonstrated that he is more physical than Sanders by his eagerness to come up and make tackles. Coming to San Francisco would enhance his legacy. Asomugha and Gore will have to work something out since Gore currently wears 21, but the opportunity to win is to great for both players not to get the number issue quickly resolved.

Jackson is going to have a good supporting cast.

Mike Williams
Sidney Rice
Golden Tate
Ben Obomanu
John Carlson – TE

Marshawn Lynch
Justin Forsett

If they can get their line to block for Jackson, they will be a tough team to beat.

I think the Niners need to go get some help for Crabtree.

Josh Morgan is just not going to get it done… Kyle Williams can be dynomite out of the slot, but Crabs….needs….some…help. Alex or Kaep for that matter too.

Anyone worried about the fact that Nnamdi only played one side of the field?

Sure it was the Raider’s dumb scheme and as we all know, simply moving your #1 to the other side of the field solved the Nnamdi problem but doesn’t that mean Nnamdi has only been locking down #2 receivers? And since Nnamdi isn’t exactly the youngest guy out there, and by no means is he super old either, are we going to be locking ourselves into another Clements problem? A guy who lost a step but was simply paid a little too much?

Chris Johnson's rookie deal

was a whopping 5 year deal worth $12 million.

Besides, it’s not about being poor. In the NFL salaries are as much about the money as they are a status symbol. He’s being paid less than backup money for being one of the best backups in the league.

by smileyman on Jul 28, 2011 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree it's not Top 5 RB money

And he is a Top 5 RB.

But the fact remains that every time you see a report on how CJ is underpaid, they only talk about his base salary and not the millions he’s made in bonuses — Including the performance based bonuses that he’s collected above the 5 yr / 12 million deal.

He has a good agent.

by Ougadas on Jul 28, 2011 2:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Er what millions are you talking about?

His total deal was for $12 million. Last year he got something like an extra $1.5 million. Again, when players are referred to as being “underpaid”, it’s got nothing to do with how much money they may or may not have in the bank and everything about their relative worth in the league.

by smileyman on Jul 28, 2011 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

You aren't getting me

I agree he’s underpaid.

And I’m talking about the 7 million out of 12 that was guaranteed in bonus money over the first 3 years of his contract. Conveniently just shortly after receiving the last and largest of the bonuses he wants a new contract with new bonuses. That’s fine with me, his contract is front loaded, and when teams don’t like the end of backloaded contracts, they cut, so fair is fair.

But in every press release about him being underpaid they refuse to mention any bonus money whatsoever and come out with some bs like “he’s playing for less than $300,000, there are special teams players on the Panthers making that kind of money.”

It’s misleading and that’s what I’m talking about.

San Francisco didn’t invest on Harbaugh to see other NFC West teams surpass them in the off-season. Baalke did say that they “wont be major players”, but that is so ambiguous at this point. He also said they will need to upgrade where one is needed.

If Nnamdi believes he is a good fit in San Francisco and wants to remain in the Bay Area he will sign with us. If not, he goes to the glamour of New York

The Cards just got totally taken advantage of by the Eagles and Kolb.

He’s making way too much money and they’re giving up way too much to get him. But these aren’t normal circumstances for the Cards: they needed a QB so badly they had to do this terrible deal, especially with such limited options available. It was a good move for both teams. This is why I’m so glad Alex Smith decided he wanted to stick around. If he hadn’t, we would have been the ones having to making this, or a similar deal.

Ot the Jets.... and they won't be able to do it.

He may have SF above Houston though because of his bay area ties.

just said on ESPN that Nnamdi wants to play in NY but Hou is making it tough…. not a mention of SF

by KGGotGame on Jul 28, 2011 1:18 PM PDT reply actions

Why is it hard to believe that he prefers the Jets?

I know the Niners have some things going for them, but so do the Jets. They are a better team and he would be playing across from the best CB in the game (lots of marketing potential there, I guarantee at least one SI and/or ESPN Mag cover with both Revis and Nnamdi if he signs with the Jets).

NFC South ain't shabby either

the Panthers are putrid, only beat the NFC West last year and they don’t play the NFC West this year.

by whistlingmountain on Jul 28, 2011 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

No, it's not....

But the Panthers have a good enough defense… and a better head coach. My money is on the Bengals at this point unless they make some MAJOR moves.

I don't know I mean, I thought Cinci was an average team that couldn't

run the ball last year.

Carolina on the other hand, was one of the worst teams across the board.

Cinci plays Cleveland twice and the NFC West this year. They’ll get some wins I think. Check out Carolin’a schedule, they play Arizona in week 1 and then it’s hard a game that wouldn’t be a pretty big upset.

by whistlingmountain on Jul 28, 2011 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

*sigh* the only respite I take in the Patriots maneuvers is that the best team in the NFL only has about a 20% chance of winning the super bowl

I mean, the Patriots are SO much better than every other team in the NFL.

Thank the football gods for “any given sunday”

It’s obvious we need either a veteran safety or a veteran Corner or both. What options are left now that Joseph is gone?
