Official NN Free Agency/Trade Thread - Nnamdi, Carr, ? [7/28]
The previous Official NN Free Agency/Trade thread wasn't quite as full as others, but with the Nnamdi sweepstakes heating up, I figured I'd play it safe and open a new thread. Johnathan Joseph decided to sign a five year deal with the Houston Texans, which means Nnamdi Asomugha is left to decide between our 49ers and the New York Jets. If he goes to the 49ers, hurray for us. If he goes to the Jets, the 49ers will need to consider their backup options, whether it be Chris Carr, a restructured Nate Clements deal, or something else.
Once again, try and keep free agency discussion in here and on the front page. If you have a unique angle you want to pursue that requires a bit more depth, feel free to create a FanPost. But if you're just looking to discuss free agents, this is your best bet.
If you write a FanPost that would better be served as a comment here, I or one of the moderators will likely use the warning system to instruct you to post your info as a comment. It will appear as a warning but it is only a warning in the sense that you need to move the content. We'll paste your content into the warning and you can copy it into the comments of this FanPost. The warnings are not disciplinary in nature, but rather a way to keep the front page a bit more organized.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

...Cromartie? Please tell me you've seen youtube lowlights of him against the run.
But seriously, Nnamdi is 30 years old and going to warrant $10M+ per year, do we jump?
With no Nate Clements to fall back on – we really have no other option BUT to throw the bank at him. People say that he will follow the money but Nnamdi does not seem to be that kind of person.
Yes, he has had great success in the NFL and warrants a hefty contract.
Playing at UC Berkley and having so much involvement in the Bay Area is also something that must be weighing heavily on his mind… So is uprooting his family to move clear across the country but for some reason, playing for a NFC Championship caliber team may throw all those things aside.
To me, the 49ers make the most sense but that’s besides the obvious bias I have for the 49ers. The NFL’s Man of the Year brings up the “whole person concept” but as an athlete, he wants to win games…. At this point i’d give it 55% to 45% in the Jets’ favor.
First thing he’ll do is ask the wife… First thing she’ll say is, “Chase dreams.” and that dream is most definitely hoisting that Lombardi trophy. But you gotta wonder..
The other option we have is
to be patient and build our team through the draft instead of throwing a bank at a corner who will be halfway to 70 before this team is ready to be a perennial Lombardi contender.

I can see your point but ...
would you want them to learn under Shawntae or under Nnamdi? Even if Nnamdi can cover half the field then there’s still more of the field to be covered.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions
They'll learn under the coaches
Putting Culliver with Nnamdi gets you the exact same results as putting Curtis Painter with Peyton Manning. Peyton is still Peyton and Painter isn’t.
Nnamdi can’t cover any of the field, he can cover 1 WR man to man. That’s what he does. But there are 5 eligible receivers on offense and there is no such thing as skill acquisition by osmosis.
LOL
I actually asked a teacher in school, that had put books on his stool to prop himself up if he was getting the answers thru osmosis.

This was after having fallen...

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Heh
Ours always threatened us with instruction through osmosis if we fell asleep in class. I think the gist of it was a lesson in velocity, momentum, and non-elastic deformation that would be delivered by thrown physics texts. Different times. =P
Yeah we had ones that ...
threw erasers..and that was in the days when they had wood backings to them.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh...and...
Nnamdi doesn’t preclude Culliver being on the field. That was my “covers half the field” statement and yes that is mythical but he will give support to “the kids” as they come up. And really you did not answer my questiion. And yes who do you learn from when you start work? From your coworkers, as much as from your boss.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Had we been able to acquire Joseph
…we wouldn’t be paying $11M+ per year… looks like he got $48.75 million and $23.5 guaranteed, including $12.5 signing bonus.
Yeah
JJ woulda been nice and would have helped not only sew up the secondary a bit but helped teach a lot of players. Imagine the ..don’t even start to b*** about this ownership..man let me tell you! You got it good here…we got it good here.

Football is a whole different world.
It’s more like watching a world class violinist play his masterpiece and then hand you a violin and say, you just play it like so, and he plays it again — full speed.
LOL worked with those types
and learned a lot from them.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Point is
They’ll learn more from the coaching staff in training camp than they could from Nnamdi in a year. This isn’t a “coworker / boss” analogy, this is a “much smarter fellow undergrad / world class educator” analogy.
But..that wasn't the question was it?
And I’ve done all my learning OJT (and have thrived in an industry that is very highly saturated with grads) and have learned from bosses and learned from coworkers. But let’s rephrase the question a bit. Which player do you feel that a fellow player can learn more from, a player like Shawntae or a player like Nnamdi? And you being an engineer I’m sure you know first-hand that you need to learn not only from bosses or teachers but from everything around you.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jul 28, 2011 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Well what I'm trying to tell you
is that your question lies on the poor assumption that the analogy is similar. It isn’t.
You can watch Nnamdi cover a guy, you can watch how many strides he backpedals, you can watch where he places his hands, you can watch where in the stride he flips his hips, he can make some pretty good guesses as to what he’s actually doing and why and try to relate it to you, but a large part of it is muscle memory that he won’t be able to explain and you won’t be able to learn from observation.
Worse, lets say somehow you could replicate his movements exactly. Congrats, due to differences in height, weight, stride length, arm length, speed, and agility — you’ve just learned excellent technique for Nnamdi, and horrible technique for you.
When I "emulate" a coworker it's not their movements
it’s their approach to situations, their attitude, their work ethic, and such. I also listen to them explain their approach. (Note: This is what I also try to “teach” to some of the younger coworkers.). This is the sort of thing I’m speaking of. That is what worries me as far as Cromarte, for example,, I’ll admit. Those are the things I was speaking of. I think we can say that TO probably benefited from early on seeing how Rice approached things. Did he try and emulate him physically? I don’t think so, possibly he did. Those are the things I am speaking of.

Aha, so you aren't talking about technical learning, but more of a role model thing..
Well it’s a moot point now, but I think the idea of a 12 million dollar role model is quite poor.
Baalke and Harbaugh have already made it a point to bring in athletes that might not be the top talents, but have extremely high “football character” which is what you are describing. So I would think that the marginal value you would gain there is insignificant compared to the salary hell you’d be burdening the franchise with.
There will be some technical yes.
Just like an older QB is expected to teach a guy to brush off an int and to help him learn defensive plays and such. So can a guy on defense. Let’s admit that it is not entirely physical ability that makes a player great it is numerous other skills as well. That’s what I’m saying. But yes it’s a moot point. But it can be brought up again on the other side if you start talking about Cromarte.

Hahahaaaa, like Brown, Clements, and Spencer? Asomugha would easily be a better teacher. He locked down Andre Johnson before, with sound technique.
He’s a big corner but he is smaller and not as strong. Technique in man coverage is crucial.

off the top of my head:
- our D-line has just been decimated
- no starting Center whatsoever
- no franchise QB
- new coaching staff with almost no offseason
- our best players are at the least important positions
- pass rush will depend on a rookie and whole bunch of proven mediocrity
- there’s exactly one player on the O-line that I trust to play well all year (Iupati)
I’d love to see even an average team in there, but I don’t.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

Washington didn't have
BB and Mr. Kraft and Brady. Yes Brady can be a dick but still he’s (Haynesworth) not gonna start flying off at the mouth. You can say a lot about the Pats but they have a locker room.

QUESTION: How much did he walk away from Washington with from his $100M+ deal?
..I know it’s only been a couple of years but anyone remember what his signing bonus was + base salary for the time he wasted up there?
it was 36-38 million somewhere in there
he’s still getting paid 10+ for the rest of his contract, I think he has one crazy year that will definitely have to be renegotiated because there’s like a 20m bonus on top of the salary.
It’s a relatively low risk move for the Pats, but if he gets injured this year or doesn’t perform they’d have to cut him for 2012.

James Jones would be one of those players
No, there's a handful of us that don't want him at all.
Or more specifically, don’t want his mammoth contract for what is surely to be declining performance on the other side of 30.
To me it depends.
So long as they make other sound decisions I will get over it. But if the Niners pretty much stand pat then I think many will have a problem. Nnamdi is the big name, but I don’t know if it is the best move.

"Short list" of Free Agents at areas of need.
I put together a quick short list of Free Agents at areas we have needs. My take is that we have the following needs: CB, WR, OC, RB, FB.
CB
Antonio Cromarte 6’2" 210 Age: 27
Excellent combination of size, strength and athleticism. Strength to match up to physical receivers. Quick enough to follow speedy receivers. Not as physical as some might perceive.
Chris Carr 5’10" 182 Age: 28
Average sized with above average quickness. Good body control and agility. Instinctive player. Good ball skills.
Carlos Rogers 6’0" 189 Age: 30
Good size but not great strength. Good quickness and agility (hips). Not very instinctive and not used to
complicated schemes. Some durability concerns.
Eric Wright 5’10" 190 Age: 26
Good size and athleticism with great quickness and burst. Reads routes well. Good ball skills. Not very physical
in run support.
Richard Marshall 5’11" 189 Age: 26
Fairly good size and above average speed with excellent quickness and agility. Strength not great.
WR
Braylon Edwards 6’3" 214 Age: 28
Strong athletic receiver. Known for pass drop problems. Adjusts well to the ball. Physical blocker. Possible locker
room and work ethic worries.
Plaxico Burress 6’5" 232 Age: 33
Excellent size and body control. Worries about time away and work ethic.
Malcolm Floyd 6’5" 225 Age: 29
Excellent size and above average speed. Good agility. Good route runner, and will go for the ball in traffic. Good
at reading coverages.
James Jones 6’1" 208 Age: 27
Good size and strength with great straight line speed. Solid blocker. Willing to catch I traffic.
OC
Jonathan Goodwin 6’3" 318 Age: 32
Good size and natural leverage and good initial quickness. Aggressive. Can struggle some in pass pro.
Olin Kreutz
Good qualities all around. Durable, consistent and powerful. Only real negative is age.
Chris Spencer 6’3" 309 Age: 29
RB
Ahmad Bradshaw 5’9" 198 Age: 25
Compact yet powerful. Explosive with good burst thru the hole. Tough to bring down in the open field. Reliable
hands out of the backfield.
Michael Bush 6’1" 245 Age: 27
Good size, quick feet, can lower pads and break through. Struggles some on outside routes.
Joseph Addai 5’11" 214 Age: 28
Good size and good vision and elusiveness. Problems staying healthy. Excellent receiving out of the backfield.
Good blocker.
Cedric Benson 5’11" 227 Age: 28
FB
Vonta Leach 6’0" 225 Age: 29
Good power build for a fullback. Strictly a blocking back. Good but not great receiver out of the backfield.
Excellent blocker.
LeRon McClain 6’0" 260 Age: 26
Excellent physical lead blocker. Good speed and quicknesss. Effective short yardage and goal line runner.
Good vision and good angles. Adequate receiving out of the backfield.
Lawrence Vickers 6’0" 250 Age:
Good blocker. Big and powerful with average speed and quickness. Limited run skills.

Looking over this...
I’d like to take on Cromarte (warily), and maybe get Marshall or Wright as well. Floyd would be a first choice at WR with a second choice of James Jones, though Plax is interesting. Not really a great lineup at RB but maybe go Bradshaw or Addai and make a strong push for LeRon McClain (who might be going “Hmmm a team with a holdout at RB and two essential rookies otherwise. I smell some carries.”)

Is there any teeth in the Willis rumors?
Are they really seeing what Philly will give up along with Samuel? As a Cardinals fan, I personally would love to see it, but Willis is the best LB in the NFL period. Does Harbaugh just not have as high of a value on an LB?
It's just a stupid internet rumor.
I can’t imagine Harbaugh would go from Owen Marecic and Shayne Skov to trading Patrick Willis for an aging CB.
