49ers Fullback Position: What's Really Going To Happen?

This is going to be a fairly short post because there is surprisingly little information out there about the fullback position and the current roster. As the 49ers prepare for their first preseason game tonight, the fullback "position battle" is really not all that clear at this point. I'm not really even sure if there is even a position battle going on.

The 49ers current fullback contingent includes Moran Norris, Bruce Miller and Jack Corcoran. We'd heard some rumblings that Anthony Dixon might take on some fullback duties, but that has disappeared. Dixon has focused on his duties as the number two running back in the offense, as opposed to working on some fullback work.

Does the silence mean we should expect Norris back at fullback in 2011? It doesn't appear that anybody has really inquired on the issue in press conferences to date. That's not exactly shocking since there are so many seemingly bigger story lines. Nonetheless, the fullback position is a pretty important role in the offense.

When I post here, sometimes I feel like I have a pretty good handle on a given topic. I know what I want to say and what my opinion is, and I'm curious to hear how others view the same topic. In this case, I'm baffled about the entire thing primarily due to the media blackout on the subject. In light of many people here hoping the 49ers would add a fullback in free agency, the whole situation is a bit muddled. Am I missing something amidst all this? Will it sort itself out starting tonight?
