49ers-Saints And The NFL Lockout

Just as quickly as I jump on Alex Smith for the first play of the preseason, I'm going to reverse course here when looking at the team's performance on a more macro level. The 49ers 24-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints left most of us with an ugly taste in our mouth. Although there were some positives to take from the game, overall the team looked sloppy and disjointed. While it would have been nice to see the 49ers come out look sharp and ready to go, can anybody really be all that surprised by this particular team's poor performance following the NFL Lockout?

I do realize that every other team had to deal with the lockout, and plenty of other teams went through coaching or scheme changes, much like the 49ers. For the purposes of this site however, I'm not particularly concerned about those other teams' week one performances. Rather, I'm simply looking at a 49ers team that is drastically changing their offensive system and making some important adjustments to the defense and has only been allowed to work together for about three weeks now.

Star-divide

This is not to completely excuse the poor performance we saw on Friday. However, it seems to me that more time working together in practice and in preseason games will ideally lead to more cohesive units. That's probably a statement of the obvious, but it's worth noting amidst the outrage over the team's performance on Friday.

I see this idea potentially being applied primarily to the offensive line and special teams units. After practice yesterday, Adam Snyder indicated the offensive line's biggest problem on Friday was a lack of communication. There were some instances where two guys would go to pick up the same player, thus leaving a blitzer wide open to fly in for the big hit. If there is no communication, those types of miscues are not remotely surprising.

As for special teams, when dealing with a mixed bag of players that are conducting a fairly limited number of plays, it takes some time to get everybody on the same page whether it be getting in their lanes, making tackles, or otherwise just not screwing up.

Do you think the 49ers first game problems were due to a complete lack of official offseason activities? I suppose some people think this team is destined to struggle in 2011 no matter what. However, when you remove all those months of offseason activities and have a host of new players joining the team at the last possible minute, maybe there's something to the lockout effect.

Question:

Did it seem really uncool to anyone else that the Saints blitzed as much as they did in game 1 of a preseason after a shortened training camp against a team with a new coach and new playbook? I felt that the Saints were kind of jerks for doing that. They could have just straight up played their regular Defense (and thereby let Harbaugh see how his team is doing)… Our O-Line looked horrendous, but the blitzing was a bit over the top I thought…. Clearly there were missed assignments and pickups…

Harbaugh definitely got his butt handed to him as well here. Was this maybe a Welcome to the NFL from Sean Peyton? Harbuagh had no answers for the blitzing, or at least no fast response… 4 sacks of Alex Smith and 2 of 7. Really? Smith may be bad, but Brees was not all that much better in the limited action I saw. And we did not do the blitz packages incessantly…

pressure

On the one hand they’re entitled to do what they want to do. I don’t know if there are any of the “unwritten rules” about pressure in the preseason, but they definitely don’t have to let Harbaugh see how the 49ers are doing.

On the other hand, I do wonder if it was a sort of welcome to Harbaugh.

by David Fucillo on Aug 15, 2011 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I doubt they would have tried that crap against the Packers or someone like that.

And I do think Sean Peyton was trying to send Harbaugh a message like “I own you”.

I hope that the 49ers come together and make the playoffs just to see them in the first round to blast the crap outta Drew Brees and the rest of ’em.

I can tell you with certainty that it was viewed as uncool by many in the NFL

I posted on a different thread that a few buddies of mine who work (on air) at NFLN said it a dick move – “very uncool”. Do they speak for the whole NFL? of course not. But their opinion informs mine. It WAS a dick move, and who knows why Payton/Williams did it.

You better believe Harbaugh's gonnna remember it

Should the 49ers ever become better than the Saints in the near future, you can bet Harbs won’t be afraid to run up the score ala USC-Stanford.

I think the blitzes were positive - saints sacked the hype

everyone, including myself, assumed the oline was solid before this game. It appears the coaching staff thought the line was solid as well. Coming off a lockout, I felt our guys got real game experience without the consequences.

The line is solid.... just need to communicate better.

I am sure you will see a noticeable difference this week against the Raiders. The Raiders played the Cardinals normal.. so we should see a much more manageable game

Good for you. I try not to state absolutes like all, always, none or never, but sometimes it’s just easier to generalize. Saints did us a favor showing our weakness.

I think that it was excessive but now the coaching staff has film of what they have to work with. I feel that a center is a big part of the communication process and since Goodwin just came on the team it will take some time. How ever the Qb is who we thought they were.

The starting Defense is gonna be sick.. So we just need to get a servicable O line that can help Frank the tank gore run and allow for who ever the QB is to at least have a small passing game. In our weak division that could mean this is still an intersting season.

by San_Hezzy_Playa on Aug 15, 2011 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

May have done us a favor

I agree with Hezzy. Had the Saints come out in a vanilla type of defense, sure we could have “fairly” evaluated our Offensive Linemen. But I think the O-line’s near complete failure to protect against the blitz may further motivate and focus them to address these problems earlier than they might have had they not been exposed. Also, it should help the Coaches and QB’s focus more work on hot reads and route adjustments to the blitz as well.

by allforfunnplay on Aug 15, 2011 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree

You can’t address a weakness if you don’t know it’s there. Having said that, I am given to wonder if coach asked coach Payton to unload on our 1st team intentionally to see how they would react…

No.

The Saints weren’t doing it out of spite. They were just trying to get their defense in shape and evaluate their players. They’ve had a shortened training camp too, and if they thought this was the best way to prepare, it’s fair game.

Because to make the Saints' defensive squad...

the only thing you really need to do is get from the line of scrimmage to the opposing QB faster than everyone else. Gregg Williams sits up in the booth with a stopwatch and a magic 8-ball that’s got nothing but blitzing packages in it.

Bonus points if a player puts an opposing QB out of the game with a dirty hit. Thus far the only surebets on the Saints’ squad after the first pre-season game are Roman Harper and Will Smith.

Who cares if they can cover opposing receivers or tackle anyone who doesn’t have their back turned to them? This is the Saints. And we’s all about burst off the line.

Next up, New Orleans will scrimmage the Louisiana School for the Blind. I’m betting Brees fails to score a touchdown against them too.

Uncool is true - but good nonetheless

We are what we are – teamwise. Had the Saints not gone all funky on us with blitzing, chances are very likely we would have come away with something of a false sense of where we actually are. Now we can’t and don’t. Other than having virually every flaw and weakness captured on tape, this game served an added purpose. Beginning with Haley and Davis, nobody on that line, repeat – nobody can have a false sense of entitlement. Now they all see no job is locked in. This will make everybody better. Again – uncool is true, but good nonetheless!

Excuses, excuses, and more excuses, Sam Bradford and the Rams looked pretty good the other night. He’s just in his second year, he and the whole offense are learning a new system, had to deal with the lockout. Again more excuses, people let’s face it this 49er team just isn’t very good.

Rams went against the colts, who are 4-22 in preseason over the past 7 years. Manning didn’t play, Bradford played half the game and against 2nd and 3rd string guys.

We looked great against the colts last year. A lot of good that did us.

The learning curve

for San Francisco is much steeper than pretty much any team out there. They didn’t have the OTA’s, mini-camps etc… An entirely new scheme, coaching staff and 20-25 new players will not click after just 12 practices.

That said, the offensive lines continuity should have been much better, there really aren’t any excuses for that.

It wasn't just Smith or the line

The Niners faltered in all phases of the passing game when it came to dealing with pressure.

The WR’s didn’t Roma good job of adjusting their routes to counter the blitz. The tight ends missed blocking assignments. Even Frank Gore missed a block a block on blitz pickup.

These things are all correctable, and come with time in a system. It’s definitely too soon to panic. We just need to be ready by for the Seahawks, not the Saints, Raiders, etc.

Talent, Coaching, Learning Curve -- What's Next?

There are almost a dozen teams in the NFL that have a brand new head coach and staff and I think all of them played better than the Niners did. Let’s not kid ourselves. These problems with the Offensive Line are not new! In fact these are the same old problems this line has had for years.

First, it was said that we needed to build the line from the draft and we did. Then it was the coaching the line and offensive line coaches were brought in and left. Then it was said that they needed time playing together and they have. Despite all the high draft picks, coaching and the time playing together this line still can’t execute plays and pass block. Other NFL teams do it with new coaches and systems and they don’t have a line filled with these kinds of draft picks. In fact, the Niner line of old never had this kind of high draft ‘potential’ (If memory serves, Jesse Sapolo was a 10th round pick).

Maybe the answer is simple. Could it be that these high round draft picks on the Offensive Line are busts? It happens in every position – Why should the offensive line be any different?

At the end of the day, I think we’re running out of excuses for this group.

by Ninerpoints on Aug 15, 2011 10:49 AM PDT reply actions

Entirely new schemes and coaching staffs?

Tennessee Titans: Retained over half of their coaching staff from 2010 season
Dallas Cowboys: Had a 8 game tryout with Garrett last season.
Carolina Panthers: Retained their d-coord to coach secondary, and seven other coaches
Denver Broncos: John Fox kept some continuity a long the offensive side
Oakland Raiders: Hue Jackson was their o-coordinator last season.

You have to look at the full body of turnover, rather than just the head coach. Harbaugh came from college, is implementing an entirely new system, all the coordinators, including Seely, are new. They had 12 practices.

If we see these same issues during the Texans game then there is reason to worry

The biggest thing with the OLine is that Snyder was the starting Center with no experience and Goodwin didn't have any practice time with the first unit... and almost no practice time with the new playbook

I would bet that the other teams with new coaches had the same Center and most of the OLine to start with.

I'm sure you guys are correct...

After all, there are millions of reasons (A. Smith’s 1 year deal) to fix the line play and I’m confident both line coaches are solid. Moreover, I’m sure they are doing everything they can think of to make this group successful, but I’m not going to hold my breath. Frankly, I think we’ve got a couple of high round busts playing. In addition, I’m not confident the front office can evaluate talent as most of their high round picks in the last few years have not played well. VD is probably the exception and he was a head case when he first arrived.

More telling than this game, itself...

…is how well they will adjust next week. I think it’s plausible the team hadn’t yet done a lot of work on blitz pickup, and I doubt they’ll go into the Raiders game as unprepared. The coaching staff is going to need a functioning offensive line to get a proper evaluation on players; I bet this was a Monday morning priority.

But,… do not let the Raider game fool you about our Qb. If the 49ers win or loose is not how to judge the team. Look at the play and who we are playing. The Raiders tend to find a way to loose. They do not have the same Defense with out Namdi and Zach miller is gone. So diffrent results are expected, but how do they accomplish them is what we have to watch for.

I have some hope...

… when I see some of the “good teams” get man-handled in week one of pre-season as well. Colts, Pittsburgh, etc.

I hope there is a sharp learning curve and the team improves. Harbaugh should sequester the entire O-line for 3-4 days. Book them in a hotel suite and they have to eat, sleep, breathe in the same environment.. Stick Alex Smith and Kaepernick with them. Make them learn each other better. Their habits, their tendencies. I would think they would bond pretty well after that experiment…. Throw in Gore and VD for good measure…

by D.P on Aug 15, 2011 11:04 AM PDT reply actions

Not worried about getting battered by the Saints

It’s very very early days in the Harbaugh revolution. Panicking never done anybody any good. We all know that the team went 4-0 last pre-season and then we all know what happened in the first 5 games of the season.

by Glasgow_49er on Aug 15, 2011 11:18 AM PDT reply actions

I think we are overanalyzing everything at this point.

The players are learning how the new system works, the coaches are learning what the players do well and don’t do well. Few lasting conclusions can be drawn after the first nonpractice action. It may take half a season for the team to gel in their new roles. Hoping that they might come out and look like a playoff team is pie in the sky. We are putting too many noses up their site decorum. Give Harbaugh a little time to evaluate where Smith needs some coaching.

I still don't agree with the - in my opinion - over-reaction of some

Some of the ‘niners key players had SIX practices before the game – and they’re running an entirely new system. It would be a miracle if a team were to be given that amount of information to learn that quickly and be competent that soon. and it’s not intellectual learning alone – it’s muscle memory. you run routes, and blocking schemes/techniques, etc. over and over again so it becomes something you do without thinking. If you have to think before you do it, in the NFL with the speed of the game, that split second of thought means you lose – a DE blows by you, a corner closes, forget about it. And that’s just the basics – if you’re being blitzed, EVERY player on the offensive side of the ball has to recognize the blitz and make adjustments – the O-line has to know who is covering what, the QB has to know his hot read, and he has to know/believe the WR has seen the same thing and made the correct route adjustment. This is not excuse making, people – or if it is, it’s for Harbaugh and staff, not the playerss – it’s how football actually works. The Saints knew full well the ‘niners would be running a basic package, and not very competently at that, and chose to bitch slap them and rub their faces in it. As has been said, that was totally within the rules – but a dick move just the same. The single best thing the ’niners could do to respond is to get better, get good, meet the Saints again and, if they’re able, beat the living s*** out of them and humiliate them. And you better know that our players are proud guys, and they will be motivated for that rematch.

Is anyone else out there suspicious of the Saints lock out “Player Organized” work outs. It is said they had upwards of 40 players involved PLUS trainers. I don’t know but to me it sure smells of illegal organization involvement.

Sings’ final year there was no competition at all.

that is the reason Carr was brought in because he wasn’t going to challenge Smith for the starting job. It was, in fact, to give Smith a vote of confidence and take away the competition,

No. From the article:
If the 49ers sign Culpepper, 34, he would not be taking over for Smith or Kaepernick. And he would not be joining the quarterback competition. There aren’t enough practice snaps at this stage of training camp to hold a three-way competition.

So we'd be upgrading our Emergency QB from an undrafted FA to a vet.

Works for me. If the OL doesn’t start gelling in the new system, his number could be called.

Week 2

We will probably see heavy doses of running the ball… but the Raiders run defense looked pretty good against Wells and Williams.

They have to pass on the Raiders pass to set up the run.

and it’s Game. Only prob is we cannot pass. Oh well let see what happens.

Other way around.

I think we need to run to set up play action and all that. If the Raiders took any note of the Saints game, they will try and do the same thing.

We need to get Gore, Dixon and Hunter going early….then pass the ball.

Raiders have a pretty good secondary too.

OL problems mainly fall on Snyder

Center is responsible for calling blocking/blitzing assignments. Adam Snyder is brand new to this and is clearly not ready for this role yet. Eager to see the OL with our new center. Should improve.

The other dude

will probably end up being the starting center.

but then I have a reading problem...

I'm not really all that concerned...yet

I think the offense was going to struggle no matter what. This is the Saints we’re talking about – one of the most successful teams of the past couple years. Then, we have our 49ers, who have a lot of talent but I think most people can agree, aren’t really on that level yet. If we don’t make progress each week, then I’ll be concerned. But right now, not so much.

Mike Singletarys Team

As I watched the game I couldn’t help but think about how much this team looks like last years team. It was disgusting…Good starting deffence and a horrible unorganized offence. That was Mike Singletarys team and thats what we saw Friday. It’s easy to see that this still is last years team. The leauge is basicaly picking up from week 17 last season, minus the playoffs and a few added players. 2 short WEEKS is not nearly enough time to turn a team around. Even when everyone loved when Singletary took over it still took a few weeks for the team to respond different. Jim needs time for this job…BTW Kaepernick looked as good as Alex Smith ever has lol

Mike Singletary

with Jimmy Raye’s keen offense went 4-0 last preseason.

I might wait until the actual season before I fill out my grades.

but then I have a reading problem...
