49ers 53-Man Roster Transactions: LB Thaddeus Gibson Waived
Unlike last week's nfl.com transaction miscue surrounding Scott McKillop, the 49ers have apparently confirmed a separate roster move today as they have reportedly waived linebacker Thaddeus Gibson. The beat writers are tweeting it out at this point while we wait for the official roster email.
When the 49ers released a preliminary preseason depth chart, Gibson was listed as third string ROLB behind Parys Haralson and Aldon Smith. The addition of Antwan Applewhite put Gibson in a tough position, so the waiving is not shocking. I am surprised by the timing since roster cut downs are still a ways off. Gibson traveled to New Orleans and was dressed but saw no action.
As to the previous McKillop error, apparently the mistake was related to his injury a year ago, with the subsequent roster move also occurring on August 11. A year later and somehow their was a mix-up at nfl.com. Such is life.

Had high hopes
for Gibson but guess he isn’t what Harbaugh and co wanted. Hope he gets picked up elsewhere and succeeds
Guess he was not a Pass Rusher after all...
So Steelers were correct in waiving last season.
I do hope MLB McKillop shows enough to make our team. Guy works hard and good character player to boot.
I'd much rather have Kenny Rowe in his spot.
He’s built similar to a Mike Singletary was back in the day. Looked really good on ST’s too. McKillop is damaged goods.

What I want to know
Is why he didn’t get into the game last Friday? You’d think they would at least want to see how he looked in a game before cutting him! Dude’s got a wicked swim move!

12 practices were enough I guess
Whatever. I don’t agree with a lot of these moves, and certainly not this one, nor do I agree with the depth chart esp on D, but at least these guys seem to know what they want and are decisive in going after it.
So who is your sleeper MLB & OLB to make our roster?
Sleeper MLB is who?
Sleeper OLB is who?

Possible fix to the 49ers OT issues?
Surprisingly, the New Orleans Saints just released their starting RT Jon Stinchcomb today.
He has started all 16 games in each of the last five seasons and was a Pro-Bowl performer in 2009. Have to wait and see if it was injury related, otherwise makes absolutely no sense

Injury prone?
Started all 16 games over the last five seasons, so I really doubt that. He is 32, so still has a couple good years left

Was brooks
going up against him last game? I thought he was, seemed to be beating him quite a bit.
I didn't focus a lot on the Saints performance as much as the 49ers
but, that is an extreme possibility. However, it is the primary responsibility of others on the offense, outside of the tackle to pick up blitzes coming from the OLB position in regular defensive schemes

Strange days
It would be great to get a savvy vet in there to let Anthony Davis cool his heels on the bench for a while.
He had a detached quad last year
hasn’t recovered yet.
Stinchcomb's release would not be a surprise to at least one analyst
http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/07/2011-new-orleans-saints-season-preview/
“Unfortunately, New Orleans’s tackles are as terrible as the guards are great. Because Brees is too efficient to sack, there’s a widespread misperception that Jermon Bushrod is a rising young left tackle. Bushrod has decent mobility in the ground game but is a poor pass-blocker. Recognition of blitzes has also been a problem at times. The reason Bushrod was re-signed to a two-year, $9.5 million deal in the off-season is because coaches didn’t get a chance to work closely with last year’s second-round pick, Charles Brown, this past off-season. There’s a chance Brown could still see action in 2011, as sloppy right tackle Jon Stinchcomb slipped to Bushrod’s level last season. Also, free agent pickup Alex Barron, though penalty prone, is an experienced option.”

Im not sure how the roster cuts work but
could they be freeing up a spot for a potential pick up? Cullpepper maybe?
Give tha guy a break...I remember losing most of our games because of mistakes by players that did not play the quarterback position.
I'm sure Norv Turner is a good judge of a good QB...even he said the guy can be good w/ quality people around him.
I don't think that is what's going on with this cut
because we still have well over 80 guys in camp right now, right?
I would assume
that Culpepper signing would mean the end of the Bethel-Thompson experiment. This move is completely unrelated

I'd rather have a McBLT experiment than a 34 year old qb....
that played in the UFL and can’t move the football down the field efficently enough without an INT or two per game.

By the way....Colts released Q.B. Nate Davis
so this now makes 3 nfl teams (49ers-Hawks-Colts) who have said bye bye to him.
How bout this
We let him sweat it for the season. If nobody picks him up, we should get him next year. Make it very clear that this is his last chance to play professional football. I think he should be worried enough by then to get serious. Low-risk, high reward

Unfortunately for Nate
his troubles are due to the fact that he has a learning disability and he has difficulties learning the playbook. He has a great arm, but it is all about the classroom for him.
Yeah the Colts always do that
They hardly ever keep 3, and their backup usually stays holding Pey Pey’s clipboard for multiple years.
Per Matty Beerows
“Looks like Joe Staley may have tweaked his right ankle at the end of practice. Alex Boone finished the session at left tackle.”
I’d like to see Boone in with the one’s next week and see how he does. As much as I like Staley, guy is always tweaking something.
I'm surprised about this
“During 49ers practice today, QB Alex Smith took twice as many reps at Colin Kaepernick. First-team reps: Smith 40, Kaepernick 4.” Per Maiocco
that seems like a little more than twice lol
by sanfranfanmdk on Aug 15, 2011 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions
lol yep
Well when it was reported that they might bring in Culpepper, I wasn’t sure if it was because they were so unsure about Alex Smith or because they felt like Kaep wasn’t far along enough to be the #2. I’m guessing cause they know now he won’t be ready, they’re giving all the reps to Smith and Culpepper will be the guy is he struggles or gets injured. Just speculating of course.
reps
That 40 to 4 number doesn’t include Kaepernick’s second team reps.

lol true
just the way it reads, it makes it seem like they are saying 40 is twice as much as 4 lol

what this means, again there is not quarterback competition. the anointed one is given the starting job again.

I know what you're saying
But to be fair, I think there was every intention for open competition until Coach realized we’re further behind than he thought and figured it would be best to give Alex all the first team reps to try and expedite the process as much as possible.
all honestly, alex smith is much as the problem as anything or anyone. if kaepernick is not getting his fair share of reps than this is no competition. and again alex can be alex like the past six years, waste another season.

Regardless if you're a Alex supporter or not
We have to be thinking long term. Even if we happen to make the playoffs, I don’t see the 49ers as a team that can make a deep run. So with that in mind, as difficult as this season may end up being, I really want Kaep to sit a year and develop.
Let's get Sims in here
He plays better than Staley, and will give us two years to build his position properly. Let’s not lose this season unless it’s to get lucky (Luck). Getting a Montana like QB is definitely worth rebuilding for one season. Then it’s multiple SuperBowl’s again!

I read an article that said the problem with Maybin is he can’t keep his weight up. He has been playing at about 220, maybe 225 when he is soaking wet. He doesn’t have the power to get by anyone. He was working hard and a good team guy but just too small to play linebacker in the NFL even in a 3-4.
Also they questioned why he was ever a first rounder. He was a 2 year player and a starter for only one year at PSU and only started 10 games. I remember watching him against Iowa and he had some skill but he didn’t really stand out playing against guys that were going to be in the NFL.
