49ers Interested In Aaron Maybin? Or Vice-Versa?

Fooch's Update: Maybin has decided to go in another direction and will not be signing with the 49ers.

Earlier this afternoon Matt Barrows tweeted that the 49ers were one of the team's on recently released Aaron Maybin's short list. Maybin was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 11th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft but never panned out. In two seasons he recorded 24 total tackles and never lived up to the potential.

The 49ers released outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson on Monday and one has to wonder if it was with the intention of pushing for Maybin. At this point, Aldon Smith, Parys Haralson and Ahmad Brooks seem pretty much locked into the top three outside linebacker positions, not necessarily in that order.

Antwan Applewhite, Kenny Rowe and Monte Simmons are competing for the fourth OLB spot and Maybin could be brought in to at least provide a little more competition. If they are able to bring him in maybe they figure it's a low risk move with some decent upside if he can figure out whatever there is that needs to be figured out. And if he doesn't, it's not like they're looking at some monster cap hit.

OLB

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)

unless someone figures he'd be better at WLB in a 4-3

whistlingmountain is right too. The 3-4 requires bigger LB’s at every position unless you’re a freak like Willis, who isn’t the biggest 3-4 Mike.

The sky isn't falling. It was just an acorn.

Didn't he bust hard?

Can Fangio do it?

Looks like Kentwan Balmer busted here and isn’t doing much up in SEA either.

yeah

He didn’t manage to get one sack in 2 seasons as an OLB in buffalo’s 3-4

It was more that he couldn't get to running backs with his 4.90 speed

so is he really that slow?

Cause he’d have to cover to play here being that we already have pass rushing OLB’s and he’s never shown the propensity

He isn't very quick,

Maybe he will gain some quickness because he is only 230 pounds which is small for 3-4 OLB anyways

He was on season as a 4-3 DE and one as a 3-4 OLB.

Between Applewhite and Rowe at this point

both provide tremendous talent, but do have holes in their games.

Applewhite

is strictly going to be a 53er or cut. Rowe, on the other hand, could go to the PS. He could also make the 53 if he continues to perform like he has been. Dude had 18 sacks the last two seasons at Oregon and lit up Cam Newton a few different times in the BCS Title Game

We'll certainly know more in games 3 and 4 of the pre-season

But it wouldn’t shock me to see the team lean toward youth in some of these battles. Despite the always predictable big talk for winning now, Baalke and Harbaugh know that this is basically a 3 year plan to remake the team and they’ve handed out contracts in a way that backs it up.

Maybin makes no sense...

He’s too small to play LB in a 4-3 or 3-4. Maybe have him play strong safety? I dunno..

His size puts him in the same type of limbo as Taylor Mays… but on the other end of the spectrum.

by Sacpike on Aug 16, 2011 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Has something to do w/ ‘jets flying high’ and him considering himself a jet that’s soaring above everyone/everything. Something like that…

Our D-Line is scary thin...

After starters -McDonald-Sopoaga-J.Smith our back ups ….Jean Francois-Williams-Dobbs-Tukuafu are cleary just average, not even close to the talent level of our starters.

If McDonald-Sopoaga-J.Smith, any of them get injured….Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is everyone hating on DIxon

He is only a 2nd year player. He is a good goal line back who didnt fumble last year. Didnt he also lead the league in rushing last preseason?

by luck49ers on Aug 16, 2011 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

No vision, no instinct

Running backs don’t break out, they just go unnoticed on a smaller number of carries.

All the good ones have high YPC from their rookie year onward, usually with their rookie year being one of their best. Dixon doesn’t have it.

He played in a spread option offense where the line splits were huge, and they were often running QB options against Dime defenses. These are things that open up holes you could drive an F150 through. Holes don’t open that way in the NFL and Dixon doesn’t have the vision or instinct to see them before they develop.
