49ers Training Camp: Vic Fangio Discusses The Raiders Game
49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke with the media before practice today and had a few interesting comments about the team's development thus far. As he described it, his implementation of the defense is slowed down a bit due to the lockout-shortened offseason. It sounds like there are still packages and calls that have not been implemented yet and the team is still working that kind of stuff in. I'd say the defense has looked fairly solid thus far given the limited time to implement things. It will be interesting to see how the defense improves with the additional play-calls.
One of the more amusing comments was his brief comparison of the Raiders and Saints. Not exactly a shocking comment, but still always funny to hear a coach actually come out and say something like this
On whether he saw specific things they have made progress on from week one's game against the Saints:
"No, not really. One thing, the Saints were a little better team than the Raiders are at this time, so I think that factors into it. But I think we played well last week against the Saints too, particularly the first quarter and a half or so. So I've been pleased with the way we've performed early on."
Fangio's discussion of the safety position has already come up in the comments, but for those that missed it, he further emphasized the fact that Taylor Mays is on the outside looking in when he said he felt the team had five safeties that can play in the NFL: "We feel good with [S Donte] Whitner, [Reggie Smith], [S Dashon] Goldson, [S Madieu] Williams, and [S C.J.] Spillman."

On where there were improvements from last week's game:
"I thought our backups came in and played better than they did previously in New Orleans last week, when we gave up a couple scores after we started making changes, and this week we didn't do that. I thought we played solid from the start to the finish more than we did last week."
On whether he played fewer players this week:
"No. Kind of what happened was we had those couple of long drives offensively which ate up a good bit of time in the first half. So the way it happened, prior to the last drive in the first half, our starters had gotten 13 plays, so we had to make a decision there whether to give them the last drive or not, which was about four or five minutes to go in the half. That ended up being a long drive, so the starters ended up getting 26 plays in the first half, which wasn't the plan but they were at 13. Hopefully we could have had a three, four, or five play series and could have had another series in the first half, so because of the way our offense had the ball and where we were with our numbers and the starters, we only had 52 snaps on defense, so that made it harder to play everybody."
On whether he has seen enough from CB Shawntae Spencer to decide if he is a starter:
"Well, we really haven't seen him much, myself and the rest of the staff, because I think he practiced one day before he hurt his hamstring. So, the answer to your question is no, we haven't seen enough of him. The other half of that equation is yes, he has played in the league a lot and there is a lot of tape out there to see, but like anything else, you like to see it with your own eyes within your own system to see exactly where a guy stands. We don't have a lot of information there right now."
On CB Tarrell Brown and CB Tramaine Brock:
"Well that will sort itself out once we get everyone healthy and playing, but we did like the way they both played. We did have a couple plays thrown out in the flat there at the corner position that should have been defended better. There were more mental errors than physical errors, but I think that all remains to be seen. Both Brock and Brown are definitely in the hunt, all the way from being starters to being in stunt packages."
On whether the quartet of LBs is similar to what he had in New Orleans several years back:
"I can't compare them to that group because that group was special in itself, but they're progressing well. Obviously, [LB] Patrick Willis is very established in what he's done in the league and we expect him to continue that play and even improve on it. But everybody else that you're seeing out there is unproven. [LB] NaVorro [Bowman] has never been a starter, [LB] Parys [Haralson] has been a sometime starter and [LB Ahmad] Brooks really hasn't ever been a full time starter, so to go to that extreme already is probably not warranted, but we're happy with the way they're playing as individuals and as a unit, but that's the extent of it right now."
On DT Demarcus Dobbs' status as an undrafted rookie:
"I'd say he's still in the middle group, but he's had a good camp, made some good plays in the games and has played very well here since he got with us when training camp started. I wouldn't go that far yet, but he's definitely somebody that we noticed and he's had a good camp. He's got a chance to make this team."
On whether he has simplified his playbook because of the shorter time for players to pick it up:
"I don't know if simplified is the right word, maybe inserted at a slower pace than what we normally would have. So this week in particular, a lot of teams are into game planning for the third preseason game or looking at early opponents; we're still viewing it as we're still in training camp for another week defensively and still have some packages and calls we'd like to put in. We're going to work on that this week. So, it's slowed the process down, but not simplified.
On whether he's had to add any training sessions or pop quizzes in regards to the shortened amount of preparation time:
"No, I mean it had been hard for us to do anything more than what we did here the first - I guess it's been three weeks or whatever. These guys are basically here for 15 hours a day straight from the start of training camp until last week, so it had been hard for us to do anything more than what we did."
On what he envisions S Reggie Smith's role being when he is back:
"He's definitely in the mix there for us at the safety position. We feel good with [S Donte] Whitner, him, [S Dashon] Goldson, [S Madieu] Williams, and [S C.J.] Spillman. We feel like we've got five safeties there that can play in the NFL. Some of them have great special teams value over the others, so if we have to keep four, that will be a hard decision. If we keep five, I think they will all be different pieces that we will use during the season."
On whether he keeps the same 49ers terminology as last year:
"No."
On how he envisions the tie breaker working out between safety or linebacker positions for scrimmage or special teams:
"Well, each case in those scenarios that you're painting there are different. Our third inside backer and our third outside backer are critical to the defense. Maybe the special teams value weighs in more when you are picking the fourth inside backer or the fourth outside backer, if you keep four at each spot. You may not keep four at each spot. I think in certain positions the special teams weight is in more than at other positions, as far as the numbers."
On what the 49ers are doing in response to the violence at the stadium and in regards to the next game coming up:
"No, I don't know. You know, I coach defense. Those questions need to be addressed to management, ownership."
On whether he is afraid of any future violence:
"No. But again, I'm probably the least person qualified to answer any of those questions."
On whether he is still in the evaluation stage regarding the defense:
"I think we're still in the evaluation stage. Part of that reason is because we've had guys in and out of the lineup. [CB] Carlos Rogers didn't practice much last week and didn't play in the game. Shawntae Spencer's been out. Goldson just got here after missing maybe the first 10 or 12 days, whatever it was. Madieu Williams is feeling his way around. We got him after camp started. You have some rookies that are feeling their way in to being in the NFL without any off season. Their maturation is a process going on, so I don't think we've gotten to that point yet, but it's an ongoing process."

Spillman =/= Mays
I think that if they are going to keep 5 safeties, they should give Mays one more year over Spillman. I think it’s a flip of a coin as to whether or not he’ll pan out and too early to give up. Although, there may be something just majorly glaring or flawed about his game for Fangio to specify “we have five safeties that can play in the NFL” and then commenced to rattle off specific names.
Dunno. Doesn’t look to good for Mays. I wish him the best wherever he winds up. Seems like a good character player with the right attitude if nothing else.

Yeah,
I think the FO screwed up with the marketing of Mays. Should’ve been closed door, private convo’s with other teams DC’s.

How do you know that they didn't do that before putting out the broadcast message?
My guess is that they only went to the latter approach when they got no takers in selected private conversations.

I don't know that.
Either way it was a mistake to broadcast it out like that. Some of the people talked to in your assumption scenario may have just needed time to sleep on it for a bit. And who knows, an injury or something could’ve opened the door for something like that to transpire. Not now. Not after that.

wouldn't have mattered
they had a very short time to try to ship him
in a regular off-season they may have had better luck, but if 2nd year player is on the draft block at all, it means you don’t think much of him.
This goes for Tebow as well. Denver in a rough spot with him, they have no leverage and they’re not being “open” about trading AND he’s a QB AND he’s the #1 jersey seller in the NFL AND he was a 1st round draft pick. Mays doesn’t have any of that.
by whistlingmountain on Aug 22, 2011 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Maybe...
But there’s also the possibility that he would still be considered a project. And projects can be moved at any point in the offseason or during the season even.
I think the best thing to do would be to try and build his value as high as possible and then trade him off.
…none the less, it will be interesting to see what ultimately happens with him.

there's certainly no "model" for how to do it correctly
but with how tight the cut line will be for the roster this year, I don’t see them keeping someone they don’t envision contributing now or in the future in order to get a 5th or 6th round pick in the future instead of cutting him.

spillman is garbage in coverage and has never really played defense in regular season games and this is his fourth year in the league after going undrafted.
to cut taylor mays over spillman would be a joke.

Spillman is a special team player who is much better than Mays on special teams.
He won’t see much action as a safety if any at all. They have FOUR safeties before them and they’re going to likely carry SIX corners. That’s 10 defensive backs before Spillman would see the field on defense, which he won’t.
I don’t understand this attachment to Mays from some fans. He has no value. He’s not good at the position he plays in the NFL and he’s not good on special teams. The same people will blast the raiders for taking and keeping guys based on their combine crap, and now defend Mays.
by whistlingmountain on Aug 22, 2011 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions
spillman misses tackles. mays scored a touchdown last year on special teams. did spillman do that? spillman played regular season defense? not much.
i do not understand that fans have a attachment to a player that has missed tackles on defense and special teams this preseason and seem to think that spillman is better than mays.

spillman was THE special teams guy last year, for an entire season
Mays was not good on special teams last year, he had a TD on a blocked kick. One play.
I repeat Spillman was THE guy on special teams last year. I don’t know where anyone got the idea he was good at anything on special teams last year other than that one blocked kick.
by whistlingmountain on Aug 22, 2011 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions
this was a special play to score that touchdown.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE0QYUA2sgg
That one play on special teams was half of the points that the niners scored on that day, that play would have been huge if the niners won.
spillman has Not played one season on the Niners. He was cut last year from the chargers because he sucked on special teams. so the assertion that spillman is the guy on special teams is a joke. the dude is inconsistent and really sucks hard on defense. spillman has also already missed tackles on special teams during the preseason.
spillman ahead of mays is a joke. review the tape with singletary.

THANK YOU!!!
Glad to see someone else sees this from Spillman. That attempted tackle (if you can call it that) on Ingram showed that Spillman is not a SS. My question is who’s gonna play behind Whitner? I can admit Mays lacks in the coverage dept but all the scouting reports about Whitner said the same thing “tackling machine lacks coverage ability”. Who better for Mays to learn behind then Whitner?? Williams has neck issues, Reggie Smith can’t tackle (see last year’s GB gm), Spillman can’t tackle (see aforementioned Ingram play), Whitner is a “true SS” so who’s gonna play behind him???

Yes that was the ONE play in the season I referred to
Mays is not a good safety, he’s not a good special teams players. I don’t even know why this is an argument, they just traded him to Cinci for what will probably be a 7th rounder.
But you’re right, he’s good. I’m sure the 49ers turned down all the 3rd round offers from the other teams that think he’s great from tape reviewing that one play here he did something.

by NashvilleNinersFan on Aug 22, 2011 2:30 PM PDT reply actions
nothing, really.
i guess the coaching staff feels that he’s just not cut out to be a NFL safety.. Mays was Sing’s pick. Trade him and next year’s fourth-round pick to the Vikes for Toby, I say.
Sing won't have the power to do that over Leslie Frazier or Fred Pagac...
He would have to convince either of them. And with the way things went with Mays, that’s no easy task. Even if he gives them the Mike Singletary eyes of they disagree.

What are 9ers doing with Taylor Mays?
Defensive coordinator does not mention hin when talk’en about team safeties. I dont recall Mays even entering the Raiders game. How are the 9ers intending on getting a drsft pick from another team in a Mays trade if they keep openly devalueing his market value?
And YES, im going to be pissed if the simply release him and thereby get ZERO in return!

He played special teams and entered as a safety with 3:30 to go in the game.

Oh great....that should get other teams excited about him.
What happened to those “Several” other NFL team inquires about Mays that Coach Harbough claimed was the reason the 9ers put out a E-mail to all NFL teams about Mays availability. The E-mail was very, very odd by most NFL front office standards and if you ask me…. would have made it appear the 9ers were desperate to trade Mays and the other NFL teams clearly view that sent E-mail as a weakness or event foolisness on the 9ers front office.
It 9ers get ZERO for Mays, the 9ers proceedure above back fired in their face Big Time!
That email may have just been to put a fire under Mays' behind... And it looks like Mays didn't take it
I do believe that if Mays had worked hard they would have tried him.. but something from last year tells me that Mays feels he was the best and was slighted but doesn’t believe he has to work to get better.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I think Jed York thinks that Mays kicked jed’s dog. But I think it was Jimmy Raye who kicked it before he left after being fired.

Fangio talks clearly
Harbaugh and Fangio are\ on the same page. That one year at Stanford really has helped them develop a relationship. I remember in Harbaugh’s first year at Stanford, he searched the Internet for a defensive coordinator and hired Scott Shafer from Western Michican U. Shafer installed an attacking, blitzing defense, the kind that Harbaugh likes, and was pretty decent but left for greener pastures to University of Michigan after a year. barely lasted a season there, though.
Now that’s one blowout game I really enjoyed right to the last minute. Taylor Mays said in an interview later that the USC defense came close to saying “no mas” in the fourth quarter when Harbaugh continued to pound it in with Toby and the O line. That was the game I figured that Harbaugh was not going to go anywhere but to the NFL if he left Stanford. The man does not take prisoners.
Really pumped up for the opener.
I hope he takes that same approach in the NFL.
And if somehow, someway we see the Saints in the playoffs, I hope he owns them like the Niners did in the 80’s and 90’s. and runs up the score big time.
I know it’s a dream at this point but stranger things have happened.
I really want him to have revenge on Sean Payton.

You would think the 9ers could use Mays
freakish athlethic talent & speed somewhere in a football game, right?
*Pass Rusher on a blitz?
*Special Teams gunner?
*Punt or kick blocker ace?
I mean somewhere on the football field his Size-Speed-Athliticism can be put to good use, yes?
And take away someone else's playing time
I like what they are doing. Figuring out who the best 46 is to put out on the field on game days.
I’m bummed that Taylor Mays might not work out, but I want to see the team win with the best players playing
